The outsiders called them The Archon, the removed and unknowable ruler of the Asteri. But its children called it Mathira, Mother of Souls, Gaurdian of The Stars, The One Who Existed Before, The Shadow of The Universe, The Force that Wound Between Worlds.

It preferred Mathira if anyone had been wondering. It cared for these things, little fluttering butterflies that had suckled at its form long before it had noticed them.

It was growing weary of being awake, of the scrimmages and the bloodlust it could see in its children.

Perhaps it was growing bored of shepherding then too. It wasn't meant to have form and subsistence like this.

It gazed down at the new batch of orphans, four little females. The smallest one cried but the other three didn't. One of them even barred her teeth at it.

As it reached for the middle one, the biggest one it lunged bitting its finger. It turned to the third in line. The one dressed in tatters like the others but with bits of gold still clinging to it.

It pulled its finger away reaching for the gold filigree on the dress. The girl didn't pull away only stepped closer. She only pointed to the little bouble hanging from its waist. A gift or ward of protection from another child. It trades it with the gold the girl ripped away.

These four would do nicely.

Carmila, Striga, Morana and Lenore would lead their siblings in a new age. They would bring an era peace.

It could finally rest again.
