There's an old joke that Australians are so laid back they're in constant danger of falling over. Known for its sun, surf and occasionally shark attacks, Australia has gone from being the easy-going land Down Under to experiencing a surge of antisemitism that most Jews thought was relegated to the dark annals of Jewish history.
In the line of fire are Australian-Jewish actors, musicians, writers, and others in the traditionally left-wing arts community. They are being pushed by fellow artists to denounce Israel as a modern-day Satan or be banished from the local arts scene.
The attacks and vitriol have shades of Mao's Cultural Revolution where people were publicly humiliated as subversives before being banished to work camps. In this modern-day Australian twist, Jews are simply fired or excommunicated from their artistic communities.
Under attack, these Jewish creatives formed a Whatsapp group where they shared their feelings of alienation with fellow Jewish artists. The group was breached, and chats were stolen and circulated online. Now pro-Hamas keyboard warriors are doxxing and threatening the creatives who used the chat to share their despair as work dried up and friends and colleagues abandoned them.
Saxophonist Joshua Moshe was doxxed and threatened by pro-Hamas supporters simply for being a member of the chat group. The harassment got so bad that his band mates fired him from their neo-soul jazz band via Instagram.
"We explicitly condemn any forms of Zionism, racism, bullying, and antisemitism," his bandmates said, without any irony, as they expelled their only Jewish member. Moshe's wife's gift shop has been boycotted and vandalized.
Actress Sarah-Jane Feiglin is not surprised that Moshe's bandmates turned on him. She's been taunted by actors expressing support of Hamas's Oct. 7 atrocities against Israelis during acting workshops. She's no longer in touch with many of her old friends from film school as well as other actor friends.
"People are being bullied into silence. They are afraid of being cancelled and losing work, so they are shunning their Jewish friends publicly and privately," Feiglin said.
Feiglin was removed from a prestigious clowning masterclass of the sort made famous by Sasha Baron-Cohen. She'd spent months preparing for the class with pre-workshop improv courses. Before the masterclass began, her instructor emailed her to say that she couldn't do the class. He said that she was too emotional because she'd been dismayed during a previous workshop by an actor telling Hitler jokes as well as mocking comments by other actors that alluded to the 230 Israelis taken hostage by Hamas on Oct. 7, including children and young women who released hostages say are being raped by their Hamas captors.
"All of my creative platforms and work opportunities have been taken away from me because I will not be ashamed or apologetic about being Jewish," she said.
Members of the Jewish creatives chat group were largely left-wing artists who disagreed with many policies of the Netanyahu government and were devastated by the loss of life among Palestinians from the Israeli military onslaught on Hamas in Gaza. They are also deeply wounded by the minimization, justification, and denial by fellow artists of the Oct. 7 murders and rapes by Hamas.
One of the turning points for many Jewish artists was a pro-Palestinian protest by several actors, including the son of Hugo Weaving, at the Sydney Theatre Company, in which they donned keffiyehs and made a pro-Palestine speech at the end of a production. Jews were offended not because the actors decried the deaths of Palestinian children but rather because the actors said not a word about the Israeli hostages, including a baby, held by Hamas as well as Hamas's mass murder of 1,200 Israelis on Oct. 7.
Based largely on an influx of Holocaust survivors after World War Two, there are just 100,000 Jews in Australia, or 0.4 percent of the population. The community is so small that 'Jewish' isn't listed as a religion on the national census. Jews have to write their religion next to the word "Other." Some leave it blank, remembering how such information was used by the Nazis for deportation lists to concentration camps.
Now there are new lists; lists of names stolen from Jewish chat groups circulating among pro-Hamas activists. They have become hit lists of Jews for doxxing, boycotts, and death threats. Meanwhile, police have done little to stem the hate, arson, vandalism and calls for violence paraded on Australian streets,
When screenshots of a Whatsapp group of Jewish lawyers were leaked to Australia's The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, the newspapers ran articles filled with antisemitic tropes that could have been pulled from the pages of the Nazi newspaper Der Sturmer during Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s. The articles claimed a "secret chat group" of Jewish lawyers had carried out a "coordinated back-channel campaign" to fire a social media personality and pro-Palestine activist hired as a radio presenter by the ABC public broadcaster, which has a statutory duty requiring impartiality. Chat group members received death threats after the articles were released.
The newspapers put a conspiratorial spin on what was in essence a few people on a Whatsapp group spontaneously deciding to write letters of complaint over an eyebrow-raising appointment of an activist at a taxpayer-funded public broadcaster. The activist, Antoinette Lattouf, had put up social media posts perceived as justifying the Oct. 7 massacre.
"Apparently everyone else can lobby on their own behalf except Jews," posted a Jewish former politician, Philip Dalidakis, on X when the articles came out.
Lattouf was subsequently stood down by the ABC for breaching its social media code. She claimed that she was fired over a Human Rights Watch post, and has sued for unfair dismissal. The matter is still pending. Lattouf's activism and pro-Palestine social media commentary raise important questions about why she was hired at all given the ABC's strict impartiality requirement. Her social media posts have included an Instagram comment hailing as "super important" a call for a "healthy cynicism" of witness testimony of the rape of Israeli women on Oct. 7.
Lattouf was also a signatory on a controversial journalists' letter—signed also by staff at the ABC and the newspapers that ran the Jewish chat group story—that demanded journalists be allowed to "apply as much professional skepticism when prioritizing or relying on uncorroborated Israeli government and military sources to shape coverage as applied to Hamas."
The demand goes against journalistic best practice as it requires reporters give the same credence to the information provided by a democracy with courts, oversight, a free press, and other checks and balances as to a terrorist group whose spokesmen hide in the tunnels of Gaza. A case in point being Hamas's now disproven claims that Israel bombed Gaza's al-Ahli Hospital on Oct. 17 when it was a misfired Islamic Jihad rocket that hit the hospital parking lot. There's no record of any media organization confronting Hamas about its falsehood, which sparked violent protests across the Middle East. Perhaps that's because the Hamas spokesman is incommunicado in a tunnel deep underground somewhere in the Gaza Strip.
The Age has provided little coverage of the rise in antisemitism in Melbourne. Instead, it's issued a series of articles positing whether Israel should exist or become a binational state as was Lebanon before the civil war ended that experiment for good, resulting in the exile of the bulk of the Maronite Christian community and Lebanon's takeover by the Iranian-proxy Hezbollah.
Home to the survivors whose stories featured in The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Schindler's List, the Australian city of Melbourne has the largest community of Holocaust survivors and their descendants in the world outside of Israel. The community thrived until Oct. 7. Since then, Melbourne's Jews, like the rest of Australia's Jewish community, have been hounded by calls to boycott Jewish businesses, vilification of Jewish philanthropists who donated wings to hospitals and collections to art galleries, as well as daily acts of vandalism and threats and occasional violence.
For many Australian Jews, post Oct. 7 Australia has shades of 1930s Germany in which Jewish artists and academics were shunned by their peers, newspapers treated Jews as "Other," and Jewish businesses were boycotted and attacked in what turned out to be a prelude to the Holocaust. While few think it will ever get that bad, Jews have never felt so unsafe and unwelcome in the land Down Under.

Writer’s Round-Up 2022
I made a post following this writer’s meme on New Year’s Eve last year, so I thought I would repeat it for comparison. It isn’t one you need to be tagged in to do, nor do you need to tag others if you do it.
Total Word Count:
I have published a total of 68,570 words! Compared to 2021’s 31,021 that’s 2.2x as much!
New Things This Year:
There’s three main things that come to mind.
I started writing Hermitcraft/Life series fic!
I made some new writing friends I think deserve a shoutout. First @stitchthesewords and @atherix, and more recently @sparksnevadas and @mochiwrites. I love their works and admire each of them for their craft and their style of writing, so making their acquaintance has been lovely.
Finally I have rediscovered the joy in writing. Last year is struggled so much with anxiety about writing and publishing fic, to the point that it was preventing me from writing. I think I am a lot more confident in my own ability now, and more importantly I’ve become more comfortable with my own shortcomings. All writers have room to improve, and the best way to do that is by writing. If it is too frustrating I stop, and if not I write it as well as I can and accept that my writing is best when I am enjoying the process.
Fic I spent the most time on:
Could I Be The Sky for sure. I spent about four months working on it, and I am so proud of how far I came through the process of writing it. As such I think the story gets stronger the further you read, and the third chapter + the epilogue are by far my favourites.
Favourite thing I wrote:
Hmm. See, the thing is, I like a lot of what I wrote.
Other than CIBTS, which means a lot to me for a lot of reasons, I think the answer has to be one of the Equinox AU fics. However, because they are all part of one story I struggle to pick one. Possibly the latest, In the Darkness You Reap, or maybe the one before that Harbour Me, Guide Me Home
I also really enjoyed writing "We Double as a Drama Troupe" not least for the excuse to use a little bit of the 0.5 theatre degree I earned before dropping out of university. I think it’s funny, and that I got the characters pretty spot on.
Favourite thing I read:
Oh there’s so many. Genuinely.
I read less Warcraft fanfiction now than I did last year, but I still just want to give a shoutout to that fandom for the amazingly high level of writing quality. I specifically want to list @khadgarfield’s Convergence. I love the language it uses, especially for descriptions. In fact I think of it often while writing myself.
Another favourite was @milo-hypno’s Aftershocks of Divinity. This fic… wow, this fic. I don’t think I will ever read another romance/slowburn fic and not compare it to this. The way Aftershocks of Divinity treats the subject of love, of recovery, is genuine and poetic enough that it brought my to tears even as I was reading it for the third time - and it is one of those where rereading it adds to the story.
And lastly, I would be remiss not to mention the Midnight series by @atherix. Oh Midnight. I don’t even know where to start listing all the things I love about it. Atherix, friend, you are the master of world building and foreshadowing. Midnight is fun to read because it rewards paying attention to details. Oh, and then there’s the characterisation, of course. It has that perfect mix of accurate to canon and sensible in the context of the AU it is set within. This one is a masterclass in slowburn as well, and were it a little less late I would dig out a screenshot of me messaging the group chat full of people who do not read Hermitcraft fic, letting them know that the OT3 from the fic series I keep talking about finally got together.
Writing goals for next year:
There’s projects I want to start working on and ones I want to keep working on. Equinox and Kingdom of Boatem AU are the main two, but they aren’t necessarily a goal.
I think most of all I just want to keep working towards writing being something that brings me joy and creative satisfaction. I’ve come so far in 2022, I want to keep up that good work.
-
Finally, something I couldn’t fit in anywhere else. I have to give a massive shoutout to @loombarrow for all of your help with writing through the year. Love you, friend!

i asked the machines to write me a guide to mutual aid
and even requested the voice of a 50s advertisement announcer so it would sound like my content
it didn't do bad at all.
we could use chatgpt for much cooler things than spewing disinformation and defrauding university admissions imo

Well, folks, we've got the guide you've been waiting for – "The Mutual Aid Masterclass!" That's right, we're going to show you how to provide mutual aid effectively and be a true hero in your neighborhood. Step 1: Gather Your Allies! The first thing you need to do is rally the troops. Reach out to your friends, family, and neighbors who are just as passionate as you are about lending a helping hand. The more, the merrier! Unity is strength, my friends! Step 2: Identify the Needs Take a stroll around your community and have a chat with your fellow residents. Find out what they need. It could be anything from groceries and medical supplies to emotional support. The key here is to listen and understand the needs of your community. Step 3: Get Organized Get together with your newfound allies and create a game plan. Assign tasks, set goals, and establish a clear structure for your mutual aid group. This is where you turn that passion into a well-oiled machine. Step 4: Share Resources Remember, sharing is caring! Pool your resources together, whether it's food, clothing, or even time and skills. Everyone has something to contribute, and that's what makes mutual aid so special. Step 5: Communicate Effectively Stay in touch with your team and your neighbors. DAY . . . 4 . . .
REFLECTION We finally arrive at sound painting today. Unfortunetly not much was documented by Gladys and i as we were helping Tim facilitate the masterclass. We both had gone through sound painting for a semester under Tim for our Creative Music Ensemble. . . . While having had experience in sound painting, I have never been apart of sound painting across disciplines and across 3 different venues through the medium of telematics. Seeing dancers actors and other forms of artists participate was very cool. It was also a very interesting experience due to the latency that was present. The latency was also inconsistent. sometimes being a shadow of a second to a full 2 second delay. This made the anyone in the conductor's seat have to consider many more variables. Unfortunately there were some technical issues today as well with the camera and sound freezing or disappearing respectively. . . . Another point to note is that it would seem that Trondheim is a little green in the use of telematics. Most of the sound issues came from their end. Today we were also split into groups to come up with a performance concept and execute the performance at the end of the program. . . . My group consisted of Gladys, Teng Shen and I from Singapore, Olga, End and Mia from Zurich, and Rii and Nasrina from Trondheim. We had a very short 1h session to converse with each other for the first time and it was honestly not very helpful as the crunch on time really did not facilitate much development. The idea of using glitching as a theme was put forward but other than that there was a bit of a struggle to communicate. There was, in my opinion, a language barrier but not in the conventional sense. The language barrier comes from us all coming from very different backgrounds artistically and culturally. Even within musical disciplines, it can be hard to related and communicate effectively (i.e. people who play different genres). A lot of the subtleties and nuances are lost. Add on top of that different upbringings or experiences that make up who we are as people, it was very challenging for me to say the least. It is a very subtle thing. . . . We eventually decided to make a Whatsapp group and schedule calls on our own time to try and talk through more of the ideas we have for this performance. In the chat group Gladys came up with the added theme of death. She explained that it would be interesting to explore the concept of distance from another angle. We feel far from those that have passed on and even call them our dearly 'departed'.

Our Whatsapp chats . . . After the workshop ended, Gladys and I decided to get together to try out some stuff with modulating my saxophone sounds.

Yesterday was perfect.
I had piano lessons and it was pretty nice and later I went to the river in our city to cheer on my friend's team in a rowing competition. I didn't have to stay as long as I did and I felt a little nauseous, but it was fun overall. Sadly I didn't get to see F though.
Later I went to F's appartement because we thought that T was taking to long to arrive back to our city, so we spend some time there. We made plans for becoming a rapper group and to diss that one guy from my class who's now a "rapper". And we watched TV and he gave me a Sommersby. Later we RUSHED to the main train station to pick up T and go to his house and it was a little stressful but a lot of fun. We really had to run a lot (great exercise).
We went to T's appartement and went shopping for orange juice (and sweets), and overall had a lot of fun. We hung out with T at the appartement and then J arrived. Haven't seen her in ages and it was pretty nice to see her, though I wish I was better at talking to her. After a little while M and S also arrived and omg. It was so much freaking fun. M and S held a little mojito workshop masterclass for us and it was actually pretty good.
My personal highlight of the evening was that S and I had a long conversation about literally everything. Well, mostly philosophy and politics and how those things impact our lives and what we think of things. It was so much fun, really. And it was really interesting to see how S thinks about certain things. M joined us a little later and we kept talking with him as well and I really, really enjoyed that.
At some point, E joined us because we talked about him and found out that he actually reads the messages in our group chat. I'm really glad he came, it was nice to see him again, even if I didn't directly talk to him as much. S (and E) played Rocket League on T's computer and we just hung out.
At some point, J and F left and I'm a little sad that I basically didn't get to speak to him as much when we were with the others, but I'm all the more glad I went to his place. E also left a little later and then M, T and S and I just kept talking and listening to music. We played futbolín and it was a lot of fun. I did talk to M a lot as well. At some point, M fell asleep. We talked about P a lot and a little about D. While they were talking about P I barely participated in the conversation because I'd talked about him to T so often already and I also wanted to hear what S had to say. Either before or after the P conversation, T but mostly S said that they think I'll write a book one day. Out of the blue, kind of. I mean we talked about the future a lot. They really kept insisting that I'll write some high concept philosophy book and S said he'd buy it and get my autograph on it. It was so sweet! I really didn't know how to react, so I basically laughed it off and also tried to show my appreciation. Really, they're too sweet! I was surprised S would even think such a thing! And I'm glad that he does and I'm glad that he probably knows me a lot better after tonight and that he has a whole new view on me as a person, because before that, we hadn't ever talked all that much. Aaaah I love my friends so much.
T and I also started joking around that I couldn't speak any Spanish at all, just to confuse M and S. It was pretty funny and at the end I did tell S that I can speak Spanish pretty well, because he seemed a little upset, which made me feel a little bad. But it was pretty funny and all was well in the end. Gosh I love my friends.
And S also made hints at including me in more group activities. For example going together to the island T always goes to and he and M have already been to, and also trying to make the most of the time that I still am free and am not trapped at uni yet. HE'S TOO SWEET! But really, my friends really try to include everyone as much as possible which also showed when we invited E and how much we talk about P in general. They're so sweet, all of them. And I think T thinks about everybody's well-being a lot and is one of the kindest, nicest, best people I know.
But really, I'm always amazed to see how thoughtful and kind my friends are and I feel so privileged to spend time with them. I love them all so much! So freaking much!

I can’t tell you how ready I was for that swim. I had to put my @davidlloyduk membership on hold in September to prioritise other payments we needed to make. I thought I’d be back before today to be honest but we needed that bit extra time. There’s other things that I could also use this investment for now to be honest but sometimes you have to look at what your big picture is and how different things are going to impact and make a difference. I’m not going to lie finances have always been a struggle for me, I’m going to be chatting about it in brew at 2 on Friday in the group (chaotic mums get sh*t done) I was ok winging my way through life with the basic knowledge I had but when I had the kids winging it meant spiralling out of control. The overwhelm of motherhood was too much. My finances & my health always last in the list for me as they felt the hardest. But now. I know what to do. Now I’ve figured out a structure that suits me and I’m able to take control. If you are overwhelmed by the motherhood load it may be costing you money long term. Join my free CHAOS masterclass take control over the motherhood load & start prioritising the things that will make an impact to your big picture. https://www.ninaaspencer.com/calm-in-the-chaos-masterclass #motherhood #productivity #taptotidy #sortyourlifeout #mumlife #overwhelm #motherhoodload (at United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoHiqDoMeXg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

28. Best Writing Advice
“If you would just write a half of page per day…” ~ Mr. Writer Mike
I’m always writing half a page of something. I know he meant contiguously. I never did come to know who he was. I doubt he’s still around unless in the ether. He’d made a living as a screenwriter. He had an astute understanding of the craft and was respected by those online. He was a lovely part of a screenwriting chat group in the early days of those sorts of things. Too bad I got banned. Writers can be so forbidding, but that’s another story.
⛔️ I love improv. Basically, a couple of friends and I had a hilarious, though against group guidelines, off-topic, because back then there wasn’t the side threads like now, about Hot Yoga. I considered it a masterclass in how to write comedic dialogue. The moderators, evidently, did not.

MASTERCLASS - SOCIAL MEDIA 2022 #2
Tumblr media
By Flavio Sillitti (pics © Giulia Barini / GdA)
For the second half of the workshop on Social Media strategies, the 27 times Cinema meet again with Megan Mitchell and her deliciously corrosive sense of humour. At the menu today: an exploration of the different types of media that can be used to convey a message, and which audience each of these can touch. Video, written posts, images, GIFs,... What works for you? What works for your audience? How do you make the best out of your connected tools?
Following the first session with Megan Mitchell, the 27 young jurors were asked to wander around the festival and create any kind of production that could inform the audience about the Biennale, the 27 Times Cinema experience, or anything related to both. Five of them were shown to everyone, and all of them were video productions. From a funny TikTok video around the Timothée Chalamet highly expected appearance to a cute mini-vlog showing the daily busy lives of our jury, the videos showed how free we can be when it comes to online content creation.
The room is then separated in three different sections: video, written text and image. The idea is to have an insight on what the jury finds more engaging in each of these three media.
For the written group, it’s all about giving enough space for your ideas to be elaborated. Platforms such as Letterboxd give a nice opportunity to write about your thoughts on a film or series you’ve just watched and share it with a cinephile community, for example.
For the photo group, it’s not that much that people like images, but more that they’re lazy. It’s also a nice format to repost and share among your friends.
Finally, according to the video group, the audiovisual format offers various ways to tell a story. First, a focus was made on YouTube and the opportunity to basically put written text into long videos of analysis. It’s a good compromise between the spontaneity and accessibility of video and the possibility of digging deeper with a longer format. Next to that, you obviously have the inescapable short-format videos such as Instagram stories or TikTok pieces. As society (especially the youngsters) tends to be more attracted to easy-to-digest content, this video format offers the best opportunities to reach a big audience. The Greek juror, Sofia, offers a perfect example of that, as the TikTok she created for the workshop had already reached 7.5k views in only a few days. The secret? The nice combination of hashtags, the use of some trends and a bit of luck, and there you have it: a small viral moment.
A nice conversation also occurred among the jurors, as they were reflecting on how platforms like Instagram have lost their spontaneity for a more polished and always intellectualized way of posting on our social media. “Make Instagram informal again” could sum up the main point of view shared here.
Megan Mitchell concludes this very interesting and collaborative workshop with a focus on networks. Not only the one that we, as young professionals, are about to develop, but also the one we already have and probably don’t exploit enough: our friends, family, people sharing the same interests. Everyone around us can be a good ambassador for any message or project we’re trying to share. Megan Mitchell leaves the jury in those good words, and also gives them a nice and funny challenge: the same night the jury is attending a LUX Audience Award cocktail, and their duty is very simple. Find a stranger anywhere in the crowd, chat with them and share your details. A networking session, basically, that paves the way for many others.
