Today's polish was pretty, but disappointing. The base is a really dark purple, but because of the shimmer it looks brown. The shimmer is lime green, but because of the base color it looks gold. Purple and green is a favorite color combo of mine, so when I realized this wasn't a purple and green polish I was bummed. What I'm left with though is a pretty and very rich deep brown polish with a gold shimmer. This is Mashrabiya from A-England.

The Hammam Al-Ándalus Arab baths
[Image description: 9 gifs of a hammam (Turkish bath); from left to right.
First line: A gif panning down over a public bath, there are pillars and archways that dip into the water and star shapes cut into the roof, letting in the light of the sun. An ornate window with a lattice screen (mashrabiya) reflects in the dark moving water of the bath. A gif of a flickering candle on a shelf making the shadows dance across an intricate tiled wall. And a gif of two bathers in swimming costumes waking down a dark hallway of archways lit by lanterns on the floor.
Second line: A gif of a bather relaxing in a bath, the water rippling around them and the light of candles lighting up the tiled walls around the room. A close-up gif panning over the ornate window from before, a light can be seen behind the mashrabiya screen, and the reflection of the window warps as the water ripples in the bath below. And a gif of a bather moving one leg as they lay back in a bath.
Third line: A gif of a darkened part of the bath, the lights reflecting on the water. A gif of a candle in a little arch shelf cut into the wall and surrounded by patterned tiles. And a gif of a darkened part of the baths under some archways, the light from laterns glinting on the waters surface.
End of image description.]

Writing Patterns (Tag Game)
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
Thank you for the tag, @strawberryclementine! :D
The Red House (and all who live in its walls) - “You’re twenty-three years old, Kon.”
Time is Like Money and Money is Like Blood and Time Turns Blood to Dust - In retrospect, Clark knew that there was something wrong the second he felt Lois’s heart rate reach critically high levels without her whispering ‘Smallville.’
A Man Named Humanity - Jay Nakamura wasn’t a pilgrim by nature.
I’ve Come Again to Break the Teeth and Claws of This Man-Eating Monster We Call Life - It was Lois who sensed him first.
Tinctures of Lithium - Lor Zod woke up to a soft heartbeat that erased the fiery images from his head.
Debtor's Prison - “He should’ve been put in a sciencell for this shit."
Red Rabbit - “Wait, careful!"
Sleek Bindings - When she refused for the third time, Clark hit her.
This Ship Will Carry Our Bodies Safe to Shore - “Of course, tell the old man I'll come by after the festival!”
Mashrabiya - And so, at the tender age of eighteen and a half, Jay Nakamura was sentenced to life in prison.
Clearly, I enjoy starting my stories with someone either about to go through it, or the Going Through It already happening 😂😂😂
Huge proponent of drama llamas, so most of my stories have some kind of action going on, usually around the realm of the Dreadful and Terrible. The last ten stories are also some flavor of tragic/horror, so there's that. I just love making characters suffer (and sometimes get a happy ending after the suffering). I follow the suffer-first-peace-later school of thought.
To homies if they'd like to play dis game: @spindaonateaspoon; @radioactive-earthshine; @the-overanalyzer; @cer-rata; @nepobabyeurydice

Morocco
أصيلة Asilah
Asilah is a fortified town on the northwest tip of the Atlantic coast of Morocco, about 31 km (19 mi) south of Tangier. Its ramparts and gateworks remain fully intact.
Asilah gained a reputation as a creative center thanks to the murals that adorn its graceful buildings. The paintings are renewed at the culture festival which is celebrated in early August, when artists come from all over the world and decorate the walls of the houses with renewed colorful paintings. In June, a well-known music festival is held here.
The silence that prevails here allows us to notice the small details, stylish floors, original doors, decorated windows and in between are scattered workshops of active artists selling their works as well as shops for local products
Many of the houses of Asilah feature mashrabiya (oriel windows)

Saudi Arabia's theft of Egyptian heritage
For years, Saudi Arabia has been trying to steal Egyptian heritage and present it as Saudi heritage. One of the most prominent examples of this is its attempt to attribute the Coptic mashrabiya to itself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Coptic mashrabiya
A mashrabiya is a traditional architectural element used to provide privacy and ventilation in buildings. It consists of a latticework of wood or metal that allows light and air to enter while obscuring the view.
It is believed that the mashrabiya originated in ancient Egypt, where it was used in temples, palaces, and residential buildings. The mashrabiya evolved in Egypt in ancient and medieval times, becoming more complex and ornate.
In the Islamic era, the mashrabiya spread to the entire Islamic world, including Saudi Arabia. However, the Coptic mashrabiya remained distinct in its distinctive style and techniques.
Historical evidence
There is strong historical evidence to support the claim that the Coptic mashrabiya is an authentic Egyptian art. The earliest evidence of the existence of latticework made of wood or metal in Egypt dates back to the Pharaonic era. This evidence was found in temples, palaces, and residential buildings throughout Egypt.
For example, evidence of the existence of wooden latticework was found in the Karnak Temple in Luxor. Evidence of the existence of metal latticework was also found in the tombs of the Pharaonic kings and queens.
This evidence suggests that the mashrabiya was an important element of ancient Egyptian architecture. It was used to provide privacy and ventilation in buildings. It was also used to protect from the scorching sun in Egypt.

Saudi Arabia's attempt to steal the Coptic mashrabiya
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has tried to claim the mashrabiya as its own heritage. It has done this by promoting Saudi mashrabiya at international exhibitions and museums, and by trying to register it as a world heritage site with UNESCO.
These attempts have been controversial, as many Egyptians believe that Saudi Arabia is trying to steal their cultural heritage.

However, there is strong historical evidence to support the claim that the Coptic mashrabiya is an authentic Egyptian art. Egypt has emphasized that the Coptic mashrabiya is the property of the Egyptian people, and that Saudi Arabia cannot claim it as its own heritage.

18 and 21 for the ask game~ :3c
o h o o k i e ~
18) what's the most obscure thing you've researched for a fic?
off the top of my head, i'm struggling to think of what might be the most obscure, because it could easily be something anatomical, or some sort of forensic thing i may have researched for 'Alter Ego'. but i also recall going on a (not necessarily deep) dive into Topkapı Palace and interiors trying to write a description of a köşkü for 'Hopeful Waters'. that, and for a previous fic, i can't tell you how long it took me to find the word mashrabiya, because i needed it. you know me and descriptions. i needed it! and now i know it without having to search! win!
21) writer's choice - pick any of these questions that you want to answer.
ooh, okay! in that case, i think i'll pick this one:
4) what fic of yours were you surprised by how popular it was?
i'd rather say that 'i'm surprised by how many people have clicked on the fic to read it' than call anything i've written 'popular' - just to put it out there. but i'm certainly surprised by how 'Bitter Teeth' has been doing as a super self-indulgent fic (am i allowed to call romespa a rare pair if there are 12 fics of it on ao3 and 5 are mine? damn...) um but also i was impressed with how 'Hopeful Waters' was doing for something i'd consider more obscure but also niche as a historical fic (in fact looking at ao3 there are also only 12 turkspa fics and 7 are mine,, brb crying rn). sometimes i'm sad that it's a fic i can't bring myself to continue. a lot of love went into research and writing it. but, c'est la vie.
