New discussion - what do we think the Madrigals favourite films would be?
I’m going to add to this post as I or we think of more, so please feel free to comment suggestions for the rest of the characters. I’d love to hear them!
Mirabel would be some medieval documentary - do these count as films? Oh well - specifically one on the fashion or particularly iconic women. In terms of actual films, I know it’s not medieval, but Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) comes to mind. It’s one of the more accurate historical movies and the costumes are absolutely gorgeous, especially the embellishments - Mira would be all over that.
Luisa would be drawn to anything on Greek mythology, but bonus points if it’s musical rather than some kind of tragedy. Some of you lot are sleeping on her theatre kid energy that she definitely has and you can’t tell me otherwise, have you seen Jess? Speaking of, we have video proof of her/Luisa saying that the best Disney movie ever is Hercules (and The Goofy Movie).

November 23rd 1909 saw the birth of the historical novelist Nigel Tranter.
One of Scotland's best-loved authors, Nigel Tranter wrote over ninety novels on Scottish history.
Nigel Tranter was born in Glasgow, but schooled at George Heriot’s in Edinburgh. His childhood interests included history and architecture, but his first profession was an account for his uncle’s insurance company. He married Jean Campbell Grieve in 1933, and his first book was published a year later – The Fortalices and Early Mansions of Southern Scotland, which he illustrated himself He turned to fiction, and became a full-time writer in 1936.
During WWII he served in the Royal Artillery, but still found time to write five books. After the war, he returned to writing, producing children's’ books, romantic novels, and Westerns under the pen-name Nye Tredgold. But Tranter is most famous for his historical novels, particularly the Robert the Bruce trilogy written in between 1969 and 1971. The first of his historical novels was The Queen’s Grace, about Mary Queen of Scots, and was inspired in part by his research into the architectural history of Scottish Castles.
Later novels featured many more Scottish figures, including Kings James II, V and II, Queen Margaret, Macbeth, King David I, the House of Stewart, and others.
Tranter also wrote a number of non-fiction books, particularly on Scottish architecture such as the five-volume The Fortified House in Scotland. He was an active public speaker, particularly on historical and political subjects, and was a firm Scottish Nationalist.
Nigel Tranter died on January 9th in 2000, aged 91, from the flu. In all, he wrote over 130 books; his final novel, Hope Endures, wasn’t published until 2004.

"I was intrigued with the role at the outset, because of the association with my Scots fore bears. I've always had a soft spot for Mary Stuart and I rather thought she was put upon too much - she was a very much misused woman. It gives me the greatest pleasure to, as it were, throw the book at Queen Elizabeth in this production." Joan Sutherland on her debut as Maria Stuarda at the San Francisco Opera on November 1971.
Bonynge's score was a more "complete" version, based on Malibran's performance at La Scala in 1835. We can notice Joan has a different approach to this role. Here a performance from 1977, Joan sings the final cadenza of "D'un cor che muore".

Mary, Queen Of Scots (1971) starring Vanessa Redgrave & Glenda Jackson.
Beautiful costumes & knock out performances by Jackson & an intimidating Patrick McGoohan. Also featuring Ian Holm & a young Timothy Dalton.
