Teenage boys getting up to mischief: Homer remembers being one, and he wasn't promoted to detective for nothing.

Scot was clearly dipping his toes in a play of the village field. There'd been some interest in Virginia Beech, and now he was putting the moves on a Capp girl. That there was a stark difference between son and father: Homer only ever had eyes for Beulah. However, Homer put that down to modern dating dynamics over Scot being some kind of two-timer. His sons knew better - and River, fresh into his teen years, didn't seem overly interested in that sort of thing (yet).

More pressing things came about for the Land family when Mary heaved herself out of the pool one afternoon and cried out for help.

Beulah came to Mary's side first. "Lord, help Mary be strong as she brings this baby into our world," she said in a low, strong voice.

"Mama, I appreciate that," Mary replied through gritted teeth, "but I need a doctor right now, not Jesus!"

Baby Eartha arrived with the delivery aid of a doctor and the spiritual aid of Beulah's persistent prayers. When Mary could finally retreat to her room for uninterrupted bonding, she felt completely and utterly vindicated.

A baby of her own. Not looking after baby siblings.

Her baby.

It takes a little while for everyone to get inside, with all the snow and the dogs providing distraction. "Little Delta all grown up! It's hard to believe. But thanks to you Mom and Dad won't have a moment to feel the nest empty."

"Well, we aim to please. Say, has Rhein told you the latest teen drama?"

"If they let these eggrolls get cold after all the chopping I did I'll have to be very stern with them."

"Ah, count on you to not let the food spoil!" "I know how fast you have to get seated in this house if you want to eat!"

"I'm looking forward to being grownup so much!"

Mary had always been a good girl, not really given to fooling around the way Penny was. If she wasn't kidding? This was like finding out that a fish could fly.

"I know, I know, it sounds crazy, but it's true. I'm not sure who the father is, but- it's either the Watcher or Rhett Hart, and- well- he's your boyfriend, isn't he?"

And now it all made sense. Rhett would try to woohoo anything that stood still long enough. Penny had never caught him cheating, there had always been an excuse, but-

What could she even say? Yell at her for being stupid? Try to help her? Tell her it wasn't her fault?

Penny's stomach churned- and threatened to boil over.

"Just- give me a second- I have to-"
