If you play Marvel Puzzle Quest, M’Baku has joined the roster. This is exciting to me and me only, probably. Namora was also added when the film came out and I nearly fainted.

Puzzle Quest is still one of my fave games I ever played on DS/3DS and it makes me really sad that PQ3 has been turned into such a greedy cash grab of a freemium IAP game.
Like I do understand devs and publishers need to make money but like… if it’s impossible to play your game for more than about 15 mins a day without spending significant money…. your game is unplayable, essentially.
Like it’s $5 to open one chest.
(Or you can wait 12+ hours and you can only have 2-3 chests waiting to be opened at once.)
Guess I’ll just stick to playing via emulator or on my old handhelds…

List of video games turning 10 years old in 2023:
Aliens: Colonial Marines (the godawful FPS from Gearbox)
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
Animal Crossing: New Leaf (do people still like New Horizons? I genuinely don't know...)
Antichamber
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (the one where you play as a pirate)
Batman: Arkham Origins (IMO, not bad at all)
Call of Duty: Ghosts
Company of Heroes 2
Disney Infinity
DmC: Devil May Cry (the reboot. PS, c'mon, guys, this game wasn't bad at all)
Don't Starve
Dragon's Crown (developed by Vanillaware, who would go on to make 13 Sentinels, which is one of the best games I've ever played.)
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (the director's cut version of Dragon's Dogma and pretty much the best way to play the game)
Dynasty Warriors 8
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (the relaunch of what is now one of the most successful MMOs of all time)
Fire Emblem: Awakening (in the West)
Fuse
Gears of War: Judgment
God of War: Ascension (the last game in the series before Dad of Boi)
Grand Theft Auto V (old_man.gif)
Killer Instinct (the reboot)
Killer is Dead (a decent hack & slash from Grasshopper Manufacture, the devs behind No More Heroes)
Killzone: Shadow Fall (a launch title for the PlayStation 4)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (as part of the Year of Luigi™️)
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (as part of the Year of Luigi™️)
Marvel Puzzle Quest
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (don't fuck with THIS senator!)
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (an excellent JRPG from Level-5 that was also animated by Studio Ghibli)
Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures
Pandora's Tower (one of the last big name games to release on the Wii)
Papers, Please
Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time
The PlayStation 4
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity (the first Pokémon game on 3DS)
Pokémon X and Y (the first 3D mainline Pokémon games)
Project × Zone (a crossover between Capcom, Sega, and Bandai Namco properties)
Remember Me (the first game developed by Dontnod, who would go on to create Life is Strange)
Rune Factory 4
Ryse: Son of Rome (a launch title for the Xbox One)
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Soul Hackers
Shin Megami Tensei IV
SimCity (the one that was always online for some godforsaken reason)
Slender: The Arrival
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (the only Sly game not made by the original devs)
Splinter Cell: Blacklist (so far, the last Splinter Cell game to release)
The Stanley Parable
Super Mario 3D World
Tales of Xillia (is this one of the good Tales games or no? I thought it was decent.)
Tomb Raider (the reboot)
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct (an absolutely terrible spin-off of the TV show centered on Daryl)
The Walking Dead: Season Two (or, at least, the first episode of the series)
The Wolf Among Us (or at least, the first episode of the series)
The Xbox One
Ys: Memories of Celceta

The Best Games of 2023
Welcome once again to the my personal list of games I enjoyed this year. Yep, it’s my list, feel free to disagree with me but it won’t change anything. So, here are the rules;
These are games that I’ve played and reviewed this year.
The list is in alphabetical order, its not a top 10, these all feature because of how good I consider them to be.
The games don’t have to have been released this year.
Everyone clear on the rules? If not feel free to reread them.
Beacon Pines
Tumblr media
This is a game I backed on Kickstarter after watching one of my favourite Youtubers showcase it. I absolutely loved this game to the point of feeling sad when I had completed it that it was over. This game totally captivated me and had me want to explore the various endings it has.
Curse of the Dead Gods
Tumblr media
This is a roguelite game of risk and reward, do you keep the rooms lit and see what enemies are coming for you or do you fight in the darkness where your attacks are more potent but you can't see what's coming until its upon you. That is only one of the many risks you can take that may grant rewards, curses and glory await you within this game.
Inscryption
Tumblr media
If Daniel Mullins creates a game I have to play it, that's how it works at this point. Inscryption preys upon one of my weaknesses in both video and real games... deckbuilding. But once I thought I had a handle on the mechanics, they shifted and everything changed. Play this game and marvel at how strange and wonderful it is.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengance
Tumblr media
“Gloriously stupid”, that's how I described this game and I'm sticking by that statement. It's so massively over the top in everything it does. An absolute must play!
Road 96
Tumblr media
This game was something special. You could call it a walking simulator but that would not do this game justice at all. What makes this game special are the characters you meet as you go through your various playthroughs, from incompetent bikers to conflicted truckers and cops who just want to do good when surrounded by the bad ones. I've recently bought the separate expansion 'Mile 0' because I just want to experience it again (but differently).
Shadowrun Games
Tumblr media
Okey, this is a bit of a cheat since this is about three games at once but I'm still counting it. My favourite of the three was Shadowrun: Hong Kong because of the way the story builds up. If you're ever in the market for a cyberpunk game (that isn't Cyberpunk 2077) I heartily recommend these.
System Shock (Remake)
Tumblr media
Another game I backed on Kickstarter, and I'm so glad I did. I loved System Shock 2 and always found it very hard to go back it's predecessor. This remake removed the clunkiness of the old game for me entirely.
Toem
Tumblr media
Toem is a wonderful, slow paced game all about photography. Photography is something of a passion for me so this game really spoke to me. Of course, there is more to it than merely taking virtual pictures, there are puzzles, quests and side missions to accomplish.
Unpacking
Tumblr media
Cosy games seem to be a genre that's growing in popularity quite quickly and this game is pretty much the poster child for the genre. Something I really appreciated about the game was the unfolding narrative that you uncovered from what you unpacked into the various rooms and houses you followed the character into.
Vampire Survivors
Tumblr media
Just as Unpacking is the poster child of the cosy genre Vampire Survivors is the poster child (and possibly the original progenitor) of the 'bullet heaven' genre. What I find rather amazing is the level of support this game has been given by its creator, with lots of regular free updates that add in content as well as a couple of paid for expansions it really feels like this game will never truly die.
----
This year has been amazing for those of us that love to play video games, with lots of truly fantastic games appearing with regularity. Of course, that hasn't been the case for the ones creating the games, developers are still being fired and removed for all sorts of stupid reasons and of course they like to target the newly established unions. I hope more unions appear and give these corpos the bloody nose they are asking for.

Yet Another Kingdom Hearts Revisit, Part I
Against my better judgement (because once I start any of these games, it becomes an inescapable time sink until I finish), I started up another playthrough of Kingdom Hearts. Initially, this was just because I had the itch to revisit certain boss battles and never thought to create multiple saves at different stages of the story for easy access before, but inevitably, a fresh look has led to pondering the story - and, in this case, the gameplay.
Which leads me to Wonderland. Am I the only one who likes this world? Based on some of the comments I've seen, this may well be another instance where my utter lack of experience with video games outside this series works in KH's favor, as the only real platforming experience I have to compare it to is the Spyro the Dragon trilogy. But Wonderland really doesn't seem that bad. Sora and his Mickey Mouse shoes might have a little trouble on the mushrooms, but he can still get around. The different configurations of the Bizarre Room are fun to find and navigate, the puzzles are basic but enjoyable, and there's a good amount in this world to encourage revisits.
And I only realized on this playthough that, on the first revisit after Hollow Bastion, I hadn't ever checked back in with the Queen of Hearts and her cards. Wonderland has always been a nice slice of variety in the first game, having a villain who wasn't part of Maleficent's cabal. But to have the queen, with all her many, many faults, avow her opposition to the Heartless and have her men ordered to fight them, is an excellent cap on the world's story, one I'm sorry to have missed all these years.
I do have aesthetic objections to Wonderland; it doesn't look that much like the film and the Lotus Forest borders on the ugly with its color choices. And as marvelous a beginning to the "save the Disney worlds" quest as Alice's trial makes, and as good a hook her disappearance is, I have grown increasingly disenchanted over the years with her being one of the Princesses of Heart - but that's for another post.

Trying to find Individuality in the Named Rises
There are many towers that decorate the Lands Between. These four are named after individuals we’ll never be able to meet. I’ll be going over Oridy, Tetsu, Mirage, and Lenne’s rises here in as much detail as I can muster. There’s interesting narratives told in these towers that I think is ignored by the community as a whole.
(Also I will refrain from mentioning the puzzle for each rise unless I find it interesting enough to mention, go to Fextra if you’re stuck on these)
Oridy’s Rise- Weeping Peninsula Getting the boring one out of the way
Tumblr media
This is the first rise most players come across (me included) so there isn’t too much special with this place. It’s the standard straight up with a ladder rise that makes up a majority of the rises in the game. Even so, it can work as a solid base line for what to expect from every other rise. That being small mechanism littering the floor, boxes of glintstone, books decorating the upper walls, the works. Oridy’s Rise also features something I find interesting due to how commonly repeated it is
this painting in the top level:
Tumblr media
A painting of a tower base that I could not find for the LIFE of me. I’ve been unable to find it, I’ve a few culprits: Tower of Return, or mayhap the tower on the west side of southern Liurnia. That’s not what matters about this prop though; what does is the fact that it’s a painting in the first place, a landscape to be specific. Which brings me to-
Tetsu’s Rise- Upper Liurnia Lake A timid painter
Tumblr media
This has to be one if my favorite single tower rises in the game, it tells you so much about the sorcerer who inhabited it with props alone. The Rise tells of a painter who viewed glintstone as a secondary hobby to their art. Their paintings cover both the walls (and floors) of the rise
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Each of the paintings depicted here were the most interesting to me, for their implications are astounding! I’ll go through them in order:
Mystery Shack: Much like the tower base in the Oridy painting, I’ve searched desperately for where this shack could be located, only to come to no concise answer. It may be the artist’s shack but based on the wooded area it could also be the revengers shack. (The conifers imply the location to be Liurnia)
Snowy Valley: It’s said that the sorcerers are decent from the Astrologers on the mountaintops. This may be Tetsu’s painting of their ancestral home. I’ve yet to try and find this area but it could be from the northern mountain tops of the giants near Heretical Rise (which will be explored in the next post I do on this)
Yeah that’s Stormveil: I get why Testu would paint this, it’s a beautiful castle when it comes to architecture. I believe this to have been painted where the Margit fight to be
The paintings in the other Rises have lead me to believe (and this is very much a headcanon) that maybe Tetsu believed that their art, while not precious enough for royal halls, gifted their work to their fellow sorcerers as an act of good will
Mirage Rise- Bower of Bounty An Odd One Out
Tumblr media
Much like the name suggests, this rise is one that you must make reappear by completing its puzzle. The specific spells you obtain are two Sellian Sorceries that make you or your weapon invisible, which makes this tower’s location quite a marvel to me
What truly makes this Tower special is that its owner is still inside:
Tumblr media
I mean he’s dead. But he’s here.
The body here is special also because it holds a very rare item when it comes to overworld pick-ups, the slumbering egg. This egg is an owl egg that will never hatch, it is only used to craft one type of item; sleep resisting strips of meat. And you know what area very close to this tower had a cut quest line that centred around Saint Trina?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In that little crevice there an unused NPC named Rico, a worshipper of Saint Trina, resided there in a shack. These items feel related in some way to me, but I’m going to move on now so this doesn’t become another Miquella conspiracy post, sorry.
Lenne’s Rise- West Dragonbarrow A Tragedy in all but Name
Tumblr media
This Rise is unique from all others in the game for one simple reason, the puzzle never completes itself. You have to jump via spiritspring onto a balcony that will let you break into the rest of the rise. Unlike the Heretical rise, however, the seal never breaks when you do this; represented by the broken imp statue near the front entrance. Why is that? Because the seal isn’t meant to keep you out, its means to keep the rot out.
Inside the tower, the floor is covered in the aftermath of an intellectual scrambling through their entire repertoire for an solution
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Books scatter the floor, practically replacing the tiles in their abundance. Whoever Lenne was, they appeared to have been looking for a way out after the scarlet rot reached the dragonbarrow. Tragically, downstairs may be what remains of the proud sorcerer who coveted this amount of knowledge…
Tumblr media
A graven mass, the result of mixing several sorcerers into one ball of wretched horror. Lenne may not specifically be in the mass, but they may have produced it as a last ditch effort to find a way out. Once you defeat the mass, the door becomes more apparent. Blocking the door are glintstone that have been tinted red by the rot that they’re blocking from entering
Tumblr media
The glintstone is also spent beyond use, barely hanging on to the seal that is meant to permanently block access to the rise. There’s a deep tragedy that we’ve arrived far too late to prevent. A story of a man going mad trying to live the worst natural disaster that has ever hit their nation.
Going into the unique construction of this Rise compared to the three we have listed here, Lenne has a much more complex tower than their associates
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rise is split into four sections, and has an elevator instead of the standard ladder we’ve seen up to this point. I believe this to represent a higher status among the sorcerers. Lenne may have had actual importance in their field.
Last thoughts
I find all of these rises interesting on their own merits. I would like to believe that each one of these has their own story in the actual lore, but I understand if some of these are simple window dressing used to make getting memory stones more interesting.

I still plan to do meme responses but I had a long couple days and my brain is fried. so instead, some general updates since I was last around:
I have two new cats! Their names are Pixie and Piper, they're actually Pooka's younger siblings by almost exactly a year, so they're now seven months old and have been with us since about three weeks. Pixie is all black and basically identical to Pooka and Piper is black and white. we have been jokingly calling them the charmed ones and P3, they adore each other and us, and I love them so much I cry about it sometimes.
i have done physical therapy for my neck and am doing decompression for the scoliosis/back pain and none of it's really helped. my gp is trying to help me push a breast reduction through insurance now but I probabl have to lose weight so we'll see.
I've been running weird circles through video games, both browser and not, as usual. I played all of Miles Morales, a lot of Hades, two days ago finished a first run of Death and Taxes which I LOVE, recently went back to Marvel Puzzle Quest, and am now deeply back into Flight Rising cause pretty dragons. I want to start a hatchery but keep hesitating in case I wander away again. XD if anyone's on there, I'm inkexplosions, feel free to add me.
"Have you been writing? Doing fandom?" No but kinda yes. No new fandoms (I have consumed very little new media in the last year to be honest) and not much fic progress. But I got back into DWRP and have been mostly doing rebooted ocs, including a year-long psl and its AU branches for one (well, kinda two) of my favorites. I feel awkward talking too much about it cause it involves someone else's oc too, but it's been one of my favorite collab experiences.
I have been watching a lot of random oxbox lately though, including the Battle Royale and some one-shots, and it may be time to do an Oxventure rewatch/watch onward? I'm tempted to write episode tags as I go, too. we'll see.
BOOP.

If I can be the devil's advocate, the victim blaming helps illustrate how misguided Supreme Leader is and is one of the few aspects that support her status as the villain/antagonist. (And if anyone defends victim blaming especially wrt imperialism, yikes).
You're not playing devil's advocate anon, rather IS/KT's lol
If the devs didn't bail out at the last moment - CF and Supreme Leader could have been fascinating bonuses for the FE series, play as the red emperor - see how the red emperor recruits/their tactics to keep the population ignorant at large and demonise the people they're attacking, etc, etc...
But no, instead Supreme Leader wondering why people are not happy when she's Aymr'ing them is played seriously, and we're left puzzled with the character we see, are we supposed to follow Flamey - who lies and manipulates people, ultimately ditching them when they're useless - on her quest to conquer the world, seeing how this manipulation works, the "must have good PR" tactics unfold etc etc?
Because that's part of what we see in Tru Piss - the lie about Rhea using Nukes, the lie about "unlike u i let people go when i stormed Garreg Mach" and the Aeneid approved "what is a pincer attack?" where Supreme Leader apparently marvels at how the "pincing" army supposedly waited until the first army was already ko to intervene, limiting their losses - when it's just a pincer attack with added plot rain -
And then we have the brainfart moments "why are people resisting?" that completely retcon the entire "uwu blood at my feet" because, hey, you knew blood would rain since you uwu'd about it, so why now you're wondering why people are dying? - that is also played seriously, are we following Flamey and a red Emperor, or someone who thought she was playing with dolls and forgot her own words?
Everything falls flat when the games give the victim blaming lines to other factions, aka the victims themselves!
Like in
(SS's worst support)
Nopes.
I get victim blaming when you're siding/following the red emperor's mindset, because PR, or maybe because they're delured enough to think they're doing this for the "great-err good" - but the invaded parties?
Where the fuck in FE Tellius are people telling Ike started Ashnard's war because he sheltered Elincia? Sigurd pretty much says "fuck off" to people telling him Granvalle might hate him for, hm, sheltering the Prince of an enemy nation instead of dicing him in cubes, because said prince is only a kid in hiding and Siggy will protect him (which will of course be used as an argument leading to his downfall) - When Reptor and Langobalt (and Andrei don't forget him!!!) attack Sigurd and deem him a traitor, Sigurd doesn't think they're right and it's his fault if he and his men are branded traitors because they rescued a child, no, he wants to cleanse his (and his father's !) name by rekting the aforementioned dudes.
Unless we're supposed to understand Supreme Leader's information campaign reached far and wide, why the world blames the Central Church, you know, the Elincia who was kicked out of her home, for the start of the War? What were they supposed to do? Die ?
I still have to check with friends about the accurate translation, but Supreme Leader's battle lines even in Nopes, lampshade this victim blaming, telling the Nabateans or Church peeps she's only fighting because they do like -
you want them gone and they want to survive, it suspiciously looks like some "it's your fault I have to smack you/you made me do this" - but hey, from the Red Emperor, it's normal, they deflect and redirect the blame because they are the Red Emperor, and they manipulate, it's their MO (even if Supreme Leader's quite weak compared to people like Ashnard or Arvis who legit framed Siggy!).
And that's where the Hresvelg Grey pours like an endless fountain - the victims will never be allowed a voice to the chapter - the plot ignores them and so it's their fault, and nothing says the contrary. It's because Rhea is so BaD and sekritly controls the World that Supreme Leader has to invade the Alliance who pretty much doesn't give a fuck about what Rhea says or does.
And no one will ever point that out.
In a nutshell, I love Tru Piss as a concept, the unreliable words you're told vs the world you see - the contradictions between your side's story and the rest of Fodlan, how the dissonance is too strong and culminates with "Rhea BaD she razed Arianrhod" and yet... nothing comes from this. The plot warps at the 11h59 hour to fit with the "world as you're told" and Tru Piss shines on Fodlan.
Sothis forgots you've terminated her daughter (and maybe son+granddaugther?) because Supreme Leader doesn't believe in... Sothis, or how she fulfills her fated enemies agenda to have brainsex with Billy and shares with them some of her power to make sure they still live as she poofs in oblivion if she wasn't S-supported - completely retconning what we knew of Sothis (the supposed loving mother) and what we will later learn about her (the vengeful being who's pretty pissed at people who slaughter her kin).
TLDR : Fodlan's victim blaming could have been better implemented in the Red Emperor "information campaign" to depict how warped information is, in times of war, or in general, the dangers of misinformation coupled with a charismatic person's spouting utter shit to justify... something that is not justifiable. But Tea must be sold, and so everyone buys the "information campaign" even if the world screams against it.
Victim blaming becomes unsufferable in Nopes and in the worst support ever, Rhea's straight out asking Billy if the war - eating nukes, being tortured in Enbarr for 5 years, a continental war, disparition of civilians, Baldos and Waldis being manufactured, etc etc - is her fault and Billy never saying "of fucking course no".
When Ninian blames herself for Elbert's death, Eliwood tells her it's not her fault, Elbert died trying to do what he thought was just, and Nergal was the one who killed him.
Oh well.
