I love games where there's this mechanic where you basically bet on yourself, you can make the game more difficult for possibly greater rewards and I think that's just so much fun it's basically betting on how much of a badass you think you are I of course think I'm the hottest shit on the sidewalk so I always crank it up to the highest CBT levels as possible and have a blast

The Best Games of 2023
Welcome once again to the my personal list of games I enjoyed this year. Yep, it’s my list, feel free to disagree with me but it won’t change anything. So, here are the rules;
These are games that I’ve played and reviewed this year.
The list is in alphabetical order, its not a top 10, these all feature because of how good I consider them to be.
The games don’t have to have been released this year.
Everyone clear on the rules? If not feel free to reread them.
Beacon Pines
Tumblr media
This is a game I backed on Kickstarter after watching one of my favourite Youtubers showcase it. I absolutely loved this game to the point of feeling sad when I had completed it that it was over. This game totally captivated me and had me want to explore the various endings it has.
Curse of the Dead Gods
Tumblr media
This is a roguelite game of risk and reward, do you keep the rooms lit and see what enemies are coming for you or do you fight in the darkness where your attacks are more potent but you can't see what's coming until its upon you. That is only one of the many risks you can take that may grant rewards, curses and glory await you within this game.
Inscryption
Tumblr media
If Daniel Mullins creates a game I have to play it, that's how it works at this point. Inscryption preys upon one of my weaknesses in both video and real games... deckbuilding. But once I thought I had a handle on the mechanics, they shifted and everything changed. Play this game and marvel at how strange and wonderful it is.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengance
Tumblr media
“Gloriously stupid”, that's how I described this game and I'm sticking by that statement. It's so massively over the top in everything it does. An absolute must play!
Road 96
Tumblr media
This game was something special. You could call it a walking simulator but that would not do this game justice at all. What makes this game special are the characters you meet as you go through your various playthroughs, from incompetent bikers to conflicted truckers and cops who just want to do good when surrounded by the bad ones. I've recently bought the separate expansion 'Mile 0' because I just want to experience it again (but differently).
Shadowrun Games
Tumblr media
Okey, this is a bit of a cheat since this is about three games at once but I'm still counting it. My favourite of the three was Shadowrun: Hong Kong because of the way the story builds up. If you're ever in the market for a cyberpunk game (that isn't Cyberpunk 2077) I heartily recommend these.
System Shock (Remake)
Tumblr media
Another game I backed on Kickstarter, and I'm so glad I did. I loved System Shock 2 and always found it very hard to go back it's predecessor. This remake removed the clunkiness of the old game for me entirely.
Toem
Tumblr media
Toem is a wonderful, slow paced game all about photography. Photography is something of a passion for me so this game really spoke to me. Of course, there is more to it than merely taking virtual pictures, there are puzzles, quests and side missions to accomplish.
Unpacking
Tumblr media
Cosy games seem to be a genre that's growing in popularity quite quickly and this game is pretty much the poster child for the genre. Something I really appreciated about the game was the unfolding narrative that you uncovered from what you unpacked into the various rooms and houses you followed the character into.
Vampire Survivors
Tumblr media
Just as Unpacking is the poster child of the cosy genre Vampire Survivors is the poster child (and possibly the original progenitor) of the 'bullet heaven' genre. What I find rather amazing is the level of support this game has been given by its creator, with lots of regular free updates that add in content as well as a couple of paid for expansions it really feels like this game will never truly die.
----
This year has been amazing for those of us that love to play video games, with lots of truly fantastic games appearing with regularity. Of course, that hasn't been the case for the ones creating the games, developers are still being fired and removed for all sorts of stupid reasons and of course they like to target the newly established unions. I hope more unions appear and give these corpos the bloody nose they are asking for.

Curse of the Dead Gods - Preview (March 2020)
Roguelikes are a popular genre and every year we see several newcomers, with Curse of the Dead Gods being one of the newest additions to the roster. It receives inspiration from other roguelikes such as Darkest Dungeon or Slay the Spire, adding its own spin on the formula by being a top-down hack and slasher.
Tumblr media
Currently, as of the day of writing this preview, Curse of the Dead Gods is in version 0.17.2 of Early Access, having been released the 3rd of March and the latest update being that of the 18th of March, which added several quality of life and balance changes.
Despite being in Early Access, it is clearly visible that Curse of the Dead Gods is quite a solid game, it more than shines by itself; having beautiful graphics and slick, fast-paced gameplay. A letdown though, is the current lack of soundtrack, but this will probably be solved in future updates. The “story” involves your character being a treasure hunter, who upon trying to loot the temple, gets trapped and cursed inside. Quite a standard roguelike story.
Curse of the Dead Gods distinguishes itself from other games in the genre by doing everything it does really, really, well. The combat requires skill without being completely unforgiving for new players. The difficulty progression is noticeable but fair, instead of sudden spikes in challenge, the player will encounter subtle changes to enemy damage, health, etc.
Tumblr media
Along the way, the main mechanic of the game comes into play: curses. These can vary, going from some which can be mixed, and those that are plain miserable, the latter being usually quite strong. The resource that measures whether you receive a curse is called corruption, if your meter reaches 100 (or 120 if you have one of the starting blessings equipped), you receive one. Corruption can be obtained from several sources: getting hit by certain enemies, offering blood in altars (explained later on) and healing at the blood fountain.
Over the course of the game you improve yourself as well, particularly your stats, weapons and relics, but all this coming at a cost, of course. Whenever you find an altar you can choose between offering gold or blood. The first is as straightforward as it gets: you obtain gold as you progress through the levels and can choose to spend it. The second though, is more interesting. Offering blood means you gain an amount of corruption, making you get cursed sooner. With this mechanic in place, even if you have no money can still decide to purchase at an altar, but doing so may land you one of the worse curses. A similar thing happens with blood fountains, these allow you to heal a flat rate of health at the cost of another flat rate of corruption (these may vary depending on the blessings you carry).
Tumblr media
These risk-reward mechanics make the player think and decide whether the thing paid for is worth the possible drawback, keeping them on their toes. This also happens with the combat, you can choose to play it safe, or rely on your timing to dodge or parry enemy attacks, which is not as easy as it sounds since it relies on you waiting till the last second.
On top of this, dodging is not completely reliable since it requires stamina, of which you have a limited amount. That said, stamina is recoverable by dodging at the last second, which reimburses the point spent. The problem here is that stamina is also used for combo finishers on your main weapon and any attack with the two handed one, forcing you to choose between dealing more damage and being able to protect yourself.
There are several types of weapons depending on the category, main hand, off hand and two handed. For main hand weapons you can find machetes, maces, macanas and claws. For offhand, shields, revolvers and daggers. Lastly, for two hand weapons you can find dark swords, lances, bows and hammers.
Tumblr media
There are also relics, these may be obtained the same way as weapons, from random drops or bought in altars. These relics offer buffs varying in power, from more healing to flat stats, completely based on rng and tend to make or break a run.
Currently there isn’t much variation for any of the items, the pools being rather limited. Same is the case for enemies, currently 6 different ones in the 3rd dungeon. You can see every variation with a few runs. This being a potential drawback for players
On the topic of runs, the standard length of one is about 15 to 30 minutes depending on the speed you play at and the dungeon you chose, as these vary in length. Bosses appear depending on the dungeon as well, the longer the dungeon the more bosses there is, all of them being always the same and in order.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
Curse of the Dead Gods is a really worthwhile game even in Early Access. It has great replay value taking into account the skill ceiling is quite high. The graphics are quite impressive as well being very polished. The only letdowns is the current lack of soundtrack, but this is probable to change soon, likewise more enemies and items are scheduled to be added on future updates.
Personal opinion
As mentioned in the review, CotDG is a really good game and worth your time. While playing it I had a great amount of fun. It keeps the balance between being challenging but still telling you “you can do it, go!” In just a few runs, I saw my skill noticeably improve, every enemy shines when they are about to attack, you just need to seize the opportunity and get used to the timing. My only qualms are how lacking the variety of enemies and items is, but as mentioned, this will be addressed in later updates. As a nitpick, before the current version the colors for curses used to be a grayish yellow, instead of the current purple, which I preferred due to the effect on the eyes.

Curse of the Dead gods is fucking metal as hell I'm really enjoying it so far the combat feedback feels nice and the use of stamina instead of ammo for the gunplay was such a good idea you can tell they really were inspired by Eternal Darkness because the three main Gods are colored the same as Chattur'gha, Ulyaoth and Xel'lotath

Curse of the Dead Gods
Developer: Passtech Games Publisher: Focus Entertainment Rrp: £17.99 Gog.com, Humblebindle, Steam, Epic and Origin Released: 23rd February 2021 Available on: Gog.com, Humblebindle, Steam, Epic and Origin Played Using: An Xbox One Control Pad Approximate game length: 22 Hours +
They say that great power can be found within the temples of the dead gods, but only if you can survive the many curses they lay upon you. Within those halls you'll find the twisted remains of all those hopefuls that came before you. If you truly feel you can brave all these and survive... then you are a fool, but such is the way of fools.
Curse of the Dead Gods is a isometric roguelite game in which you attempt to work your way through three temples to gain powers beyond mortal reckoning. That really is about it when it comes to the story, however, I've found that being light in the story department is a strength for most roguelite games (with the notable exception of Hades). Most players don't want to be bogged down with a complex narrative and simply want to get back into the action and in that regard this game doesn't disappoint. The temples of the dead gods are sealed shut with no natural light apart from a few lit braziers, well that and your trusty torch. However, you have a choice to make you can either have your torch out and illuminating your way or your weapons. Both light and darkness have their benefits and drawbacks. When in light you can see hidden traps and have (slightly) more warning of upcoming enemies, but in the darkness your attack damage increases significantly, in fact certain builds rely upon you fighting in the darkness rather than the light.
Tumblr media
Your character (whose name I only found out was Caradog when doing some research) has stamina points, five of them actually. One of these stamina points is depleted each time you dodge, use your secondary weapon or perform a finishing attack (which is the final attack in a string of them with your main weapon) and using your two handed weapon drains two stamina points each time its used. These points regenerate quickly after use and can even be earned by performing a perfect dodge, meaning you dodged out of the way at 'just' the right moment. Each time you go through a door you gain corruption which will start to fill a gauge in the bottom right of the screen, when it fills up you are 'gifted' a curse upon entering the next door. These curses add additional rules that make the game more challenging. You can have five of these curses which range from being mildly annoying through to deadly, however its the fifth and final curse thats the worst usually directly affecting your health (like draining it away).
At the end of some rooms you will find altars where you can make an offering, the various altars relate to weapons, relics or attributes and they will accept an offering of either gold or blood. Expending the gold will use the gold (that doesn't stack between runs) you've gained to purchase what you want, an offering of blood increases your corruption instead.
Tumblr media
Normal enemies will sometimes drop crystal skulls, weapons or relics when they're killed. The occurrence of these drops happening is influenced by your Perception attribute. If you kill a champion (end of level boss) they will drop jade rings, crystal skulls, relics and weapons (and if its your first time killing them they also give blood emblems). Jade rings, crystal skulls, and blood emblems carry over from playthrough to playthrough and you spend them to upgrade your characters situation in the underworld. Normal enemies will sometimes drop crystal skulls, weapons or relics when they're killed. The occurrence of these drops happening is influenced by your Perception attribute. Jade rings, crystal skulls, and blood emblems carry over from playthrough to playthrough and you spend them to upgrade your characters situation in the underworld. Now you may have noticed that I've made no mention of the enemies dropping gold, that's because they don't, but that doesn't mean you can't get gold from their deaths. This game rewards the player for skillful play with its 'Greed Kills' when you chain kills the greed kill counter will appear and start to count down (it lasts approximately two seconds) the more enemies that die while the counter is on screen the greater the multiplier becomes. If you take damage during that time though, the greed kill timer disappears.
Tumblr media
As you play you'll find relics and weapons that will grant bonuses if they are equipped. However, you can instead choose to offer them up to the gods who in turn will reward you with a reduction in your corruption, gold or sometimes a increase to an attribute.
I've mentioned attributes a few times now so I should probably explain what they are. There are three attributes, Constitution, Dexterity and Perception. Consistution increases you maximum health, dexterity increases your damage with weapons and perception influences how often enemies will drop items. Inevitably, your character will die either to an enemy or a trap, and when that happens you're sent to the underworld, its here that you can spend the crystal skulls and jade rings on blessings, unlocking weaponry and improving your starting arsenal. Thus improving your chances at success in your next run.
Tumblr media
The game comes with an 'assist mode' that can be activated in the system menu. Turning on this mode will allow you to customise the difficulty of the game somewhat, for example you could increase your stamina or remove the final curse. However, activating this will stop you from gaining achievements (if that matters to you) and will put a permanent marker on your save slot, I know a lot of people who would find that very off putting.
My thoughts on this game? It's pretty damned good. I liked it enough to purchase the soundtrack and even when I finished the game I kept coming back to try my hand at the daily challenge events that appear. So yeah, I recommend it.
If this appeals to you perhaps try;
Hand of Fate 2 Hades
