I never expected to post this picture of an AU where Jester is a dragon rider and feel actively sad, bitter, and angry about it, but here we are.
Dragonblade rant under the cut.
I wanted to post this having discovered Jester's name and backstory, at the end of a book where he could finally call himself brave, and where he'd grown into a man just as good, kind, intelligent and sweet as Jester was in the show. I've loved his character for over a decade and genuinely believed this was the story where we'd get his full story after his enigmatic introduction.
And instead he got a quick, brutal, meaningless death that didn't even affect the plot. He got 20 chapters of being characterised as a lazy, unfit drunk. Of being emotionally stunted and neurotic and desperately obsessed with an unrequited love. Of being outperformed both mentally and physically by some random older man who was trying to woo the 16-year-old main character - who was herself repeatedly robbed of her own agency and dignity and forced into a narrative hinting at a romance with Robert, a man portrayed as a manipulative sexual predator - or a life of isolation from other humans, waiting to find out whether she'd have to slice open her dragon or die of old age, whichever comes first.
All of the magic and mystery and warmth and comradeship in the characters and storytelling that existed in the Jane and the Dragon show was systematically stripped away over 21 poorly written chapters. And I tried so hard to enjoy it - despite the careless way it was written in both typos and grammatical errors, weird pacing, the shoddy, sometimes nonsensical plotting and character choices. The gratuitous violence towards Gunther and miserable characterisation of Jester (culminating in a poorly written death for shock value) just to discredit and remove them and make space for Robert as both love interest and battle comrade.
So many times I recognised how poorly the story was written but felt so fondly about the show that I kept reading anyway, desperate for a snippet of backstory on my favourite character, the kind of man I imagined he'd become, to see how all of the characters had grown and developed, to see a resolution or development on the dragon lore - just desperate to see a glimmer of the original show in Dragonblade.
And instead we got this; a tangled mess of half-baked and barely connected plots held up by poorly characterised characters, that culminated in the utterly meaningless death of my favourite character and not one single plot resolution.
But don't worry, at least there's still more to come.

Sharing these here. Idk if they’ve ever been seen by the Jane and the Dragon fandom before. But here they are!!! I think this is how I imagine jane in the novels just because she seems to still be the same jane form the show. But this concept art shows her to be a knight and no longer a squire. And it’s not her childhood armor she got from jester. Sooo my head canon is that this is 16-17 year old jane. I really wish I could find anything of Gunther as I cant find anything showing him grown up canon wise. Shame really. I have more to share since Discord won’t let me send any other files.
I also uploaded the art of jane and the dragon. On my YouTube channel RariaRoyal as it is about the team creating the show! Check that out and please like
Thanks guyssss

Dragon blade sub-plot fix (pt.1)
I’ve been thinking about how to improve Martyn Baynton’s Dragonblade novel. One idea I had would be to write the sub-plot with Jester and Gunther from Gunther’s POV.
Here’s how I envision the story to go:
Gunther greets his friends (yes, they are actually friends) from the castle with news he has to share. He sits down next to Jane (which Jane doesn’t seem to mind but Jester does) and shares that Haroldus is coming to visit. Cue lively discussion of fond memories of Haroldus’ last visit.
Later, Gunther joins the group of knights that take Haroldus out to the local tavern. Since that scene is from Jane’s POV, Gunther won’t play a major part, though he does observe what happens as Jane interacts with Robert the forester.
The next night, Gunther goes on his date with Lady Rose. He, of course does his part as the dutiful boyfriend, but it’s obvious he isn’t into the date. In fact, he is secretly wishing that it was Jane with him instead of Rose. We learn that Gunther has harbored romantic feelings for his partner/rival for a while, but has never acted on them due to Jane seeming to reject all advances from other men. There has even been some distance between her and Jester in recent years when the latter’s feelings became more apparent. Rose does notice Gunther’s distractedness, but for her own reasons, doesn’t make a big deal of it.
Gunther gets home after the date, and as he enters the living room, he notices his father and Rose’s father talking in low tones in another room. Their backs are turned, so they don’t notice him coming in. Gunther listens in as they unveil a plot to essentially overthrow the king.
Now Gunther has a dilemma. Does he report what he knows as a loyal knight, or does he keep it a secret as a loyal son? He confides his situation to Jane, Jester, and Dragon, and together, they hatch a plan to thwart Magnus. Things come to a head when Gunther realizes that this situation cannot be resolved unless he decides where his loyalties lie.
How it helps:
This new story line would bring a unified theme to the novel. The current story seems to have two different stories with no connection except that the characters happen to share the same world. Gunther’s struggle in my plot would tie into Jane’s story, where she also has to decide between conflicting loyalties. Parallel themes often provide a sense of unity when balancing different story lines within the same story.
On a side note, Gunther having to confide/trust in Jane to help him overcome the merchant's scheme would also be great fodder for the Janther ship. Just thought I'd mention that.
It would also bring consistency to Gunther's character and build his arc in a believable way. We've already seen Gunther struggle with doing what he knows is right, especially when that means standing up to his father. However, we have yet to see him actually hold Magnus accountable for the horrible stuff he does. Seeing Gunther make a final defiance against his father would certainly be satisfying.
And that's all the thoughts I have for now. I hope to write other ideas for improving the novel. But for now, thank you all for reading this, and have a pleasant day.

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder — the Netflix guide
The BBC introduced us to Emma Myers in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder some time ago, now it’s the time of Netflix. The show is a BBC commission from Netflix, hence the duplication. Here’s the Netflix version. I’ve not compared in any detail; here’s the Netflix summary: Emma Myers, who portrays Wednesday Addams’ werewolf roommate Enid Sinclair on Wednesday, will star as the smart and…

For those JatD fans who aren’t on the discord server and haven’t heard yet, Martin Baynton has released the first chapter of a Jane and the Dragon novel called Dragonblade on his website. He plans to post new chapters weekly.
You can read it here.
It has been a weird couple of days in the JatD fandom, but apparently this is happening!

Steel blue waves rolled restlessly under grey sky. A lonely figure stood tall, keeping resolute watch over the sea. She was thinking of home.
And if she cried, there was not a soul to bear witness on that windy day.
