Drawing The Musketeers 16
I feel thoroughly out of practice, which is a good time to start! Have a complex villain (as ever, better seen on a small screen):
Tumblr media
Bla bli bloo:
Quite why I started back in with a character with such a complex... everything (facial expression, hair, costume) I’m unsure, but there it is.
Stealth lace. Bloody, bloody lace.
I did a ton of measurements to kick off, and it turns out you can measure until your eyes start out of your head, but if you’re having a stressy day and aren’t quite back in the headspace, it makes bugger-all difference.
I redrew the mouth once, the eyebrows once and the nose probably twice.
Getting the midline right on a three-quarters shot with shoulders turned away is proving almost as much my nemesis as lace.
The hair Could Be Better.
On the other hand: you can tell exactly who it is straight away.
I’d forgotten what a git satin is. Some of it looks great... other bits... lack subtlety, let’s say.
The next character I draw is going to have a really simple costume, even if I have to find someone with their top off.
Aramis, I’m looking at you.
The eyes are looking in the same direction, at least! 😄
Drawing is tiring. Like: really tiring. I’d forgotten!
Next time will be sooner.
⬅Day 15     Day 17➡
Progress shots below the cut because why not?

The King’s Agents
Here’s the S.H.I.E.L.D/Musketeers AU nobody asked for (and that I will never write 🤭) in a fantasy 17th century France-like land where nobody bats an eye at female soldiers, but they’re still scoring through the roof in classism and zero in democracy.
Daisy as D’Artagnan. The cocky young hot-head with a big heart.
Robbie as Athos. Brooding and tormented. He has a Past(tm).
Trip as Aramis. Smooth, suave and insightful.
Mack as Porthos. He’s the only one with the size but also because the way Porthos’ story concludes in S3 made me think of him.
May as Captain Treville. Pretends to be exasperated by the Musketeers’ antics, but she’d die for those fools.
Coulson as D’Artagnan's father. Cue flashback of his contextually-appropriate wise words every time his daughter is about to do something unwisely heroic. There are going to be many flashbacks.😁
Sousa, Lincoln or Simmons as Constance. And “D’Artagnan” & “Athos” are going to “spar”, a lot (I’m covering all the bases *winks*).
Raina as Milady De Winter. And she will eventually live happily, plotting and scheming to great riches, perhaps in the colonies. Sorry not sorry, I like them both.😁
Gideon Malick as Cardinal Richelieu.
Ward as Rochefort. (although Rochefort is *worse*, at least in the BBC show)
Deke as Emile Bonnaire.
If Simmons isn’t Constance, she is Queen Anne and therefore Fitz would be Louis XIII by default and I’d be giving him Louis XVI’s blacksmithing hobby because Fitz should always be a tinkerer of some kind.
Radcliffe as Marquis De Feron.
If Simmons is Constance, then Agnes as Queen Anne and a younger Radcliffe as Louis XIII.
Sarge as Grimaud. Plot twist: he's D'Artagnan's long lost uncle (her father’s twin brother) that everyone thought had died at sea. 😁

This week’s episode of The Musketeers made me wonder whether the Red Guard charge extra for specialist services. And if you want to see what else I thought about it, here’s my review of Brothers In Arms.

The War Years
As some of you know, I’ve somehow given myself the ludicrously ambitious task of filling in the four years The Inseparables were away from Paris.
You know – no biggie.
And, far from the gentle literary exercise in writing a few letters between the d’Artagnans as originally envisaged, it’s ballooned.
Tumblr media
Read on if you’d like to know what I’ve done, what I’m planning, and what I’d like to know from you – obviously chock full of spoilers for Season 3 (and the War series itself, naturally).
So far I’ve covered:
Sweet (and increasingly boldly erotic) letters between my OT3 of d’Artagnan, Constance, and Athos.
Letters and notes between nearly every main character from Season 3 with the exception of the Dauphin (and Sylvie... so far...)
Athos teaching Constance about simple cryptology, which renders their letters at least one layer more secure, and gives them, essentially, a game to play, along with their correspondence chess.
Aramis sending his Musketeer effects back (because how come he got his main gauche and pistols back when he got to Paris, eh?)
Porthos being a grumpy bastard (and both implicitly and explicitly missing Aramis).
The cadets starting to arrive and starting to be trained (by an OC, Fabron, because it’s never explicitly made clear who actually bloody trained them before The Four got back).
Various actually military shenanigans at the Front.
Constance shifting from the Palace to the Garrison (including a tender farewell to the Queen).
Feron and Grimaud (and Marcheaux) meeting each other.
Porthos continuing to struggle with all sorts of inconvenient Feelings.
Tréville and Constance developing a working relationship and deepening the trust between them.
Feron and Grimaud developing a working relationship, starting with their machinations to make Feron Governor.
The children turning up at the Monastery and Aramis being given care of them.
Historical (and at least partially canon) conspiracy of Gaston with Louis’s (ahem) “favourite” – the Marquis de Cinq-Mars – against the throne and with Spain (about two-thirds of the way through this currently), egged on by Feron (obviously not quite so canon).
Plenty of sexytimes, despite War and separation.
This has taken us from October 1635 (outbreak of war – an uneasy balance between BBC canon and Actual History while being wildly inaccurate for both, turns out) to September 1637 (the orphans and Aramis). For better or worse, I’m bringing the lads back to Paris in April 1639, so I’ve got approximately 18 months left to fill.
(And I now know a lot more about: The Thirty Years War – in which the involvement of France was pretty much delayed due to the marital bonds between France and Spain; arquebus firing ranges; the treatment of prisoners of war in that period; how to sew doublets; handwriting fonts – oh dear saints, I have already got through so many fonts!; horse anatomy; how to do alt-text and decent image descriptions; the history of the monastery at Douai; the history and geography of Alsace and Lorraine, and the impressive mercenary army led by a particularly dedicated maniac that controlled a great deal of the former and made things difficult for the latter during that particular war; 17th Century French sedition – both workers and nobles; the sheer number of illegitimate children sired by Henri IV (to be fair: he did legitimise a fair number of them); Gaston, Duc d’Orléans; Henri, Marquis de Cinq-Mars (I’m fairly convinced that the BBC kind of merged their personalities and looks, by the way); quite how much Cardinal Richelieu was both hated and admired in his lifetime and afterwards; the routes that opium took to 17th Century France; 17th Century European sex toys and their history through antiquity.)
Things I plan to cover:
The uncovering of the conspiracy and installation (barely coincidentally) of Feron as Governor of Paris and Marcheaux as Captain of the Red Guard.
Porthos’s Moment of Weakness (deserting and bringing himself back).
More Aramis and children at the Monastery.
More sexytimes (possibly only for my own sanity/ motivation).
How did Porthos get captured in Alsace, and how did the others rescue him?
By special request: The Baudins’ seditious journeying across France and settling in St. Antoine with the refugees in Paris.
The increasingly totalitarian/ despotic rule of Paris by Feron and his wingèd monkeys.
The inception of Grimaud’s relationship with the craven general.
Louis becoming increasingly ill and his efforts in hiding it.
Did you think I’d forgotten about Milady? I have not, though I haven’t planned much for her (I said that about Aramis, mind, and look – he’s got at least four episodes dedicated to him).
So what have I missed? I’ve felt increasingly like I’m filling in for/ correcting various sins of omission by the BBC, and I can’t be the only person who’s got frustrations they’d like soothed/ questions they’d like answered. So, if you’d like me to take that on, please let me know here what you’d like me to tackle
(Likewise, if you’d like to stroke me on the head/ back and give me some validation/ general cheerleading for this extraordinary project, that would be wildly appreciated!)
Finally, some of the letters. Tumblr has posted them in a completely different order from how I uploaded them, so... enjoy the mystery...?
