Where does the cruise ship sewage go?
youtube
Cruise ships must deal with the waste produced by all the people on board. Each week the gigantic Oasis-class ships from Royal Caribbean are estimated to create around 210,000 gallons (794,000 litres) of sewage. This is referred to as Black Water.
They also make over a 1 million gallons (3.7 million litres) of Grey Water. This includes laundry water, water from the sinks and showers and so on. If this all went directly into the sea, untreated (as in the days of old) it would be an environmental disaster.
MARPOL
The treatment and discharge of wastewater is governed by the MARPOL, an International Maritime Organisation Regulation. MARPOL restricts where ships can discharge water, and what levels of treatment ships must adhere to.
Sadly, breaching the MARPOL rules has occurred a number of times, and it attracts fines as well as terrible public relations damage. It is in the best interest of the cruise industry (as well as the environment) to ensure all cruise ships adhere to the regulations.
What Happens Aboard?
When toilets are flushed, or water used in showers, sinks and laundrettes, the used water is sent to ballast tanks at the bottom of the ship.
Because raw sewage is contaminated with dangerous bacteria, Black Water is kept separate from the Grey Water. This means that the toilets are all linked to a separate sewer system than the rest of the sinks and drains aboard the ship!
This is because the Black Water must be sent through a significant treatment process. Black Water treatment is far greater than the treatment of the Grey Water. Black Water is sent to an onboard sewage treatment facility, usually situated near the ship’s engine room.
Tumblr media
Above: Part of the QE2's Sewage Treatment System (Frame / Cross 2008)
First it is skimmed, to remove the larger obstructions. It is then sent to an oxygen rich bacteria tank, where the bacteria speeds up the decomposition of the sewage, to break it down quickly.
Following the bacteria treatment, the water is sent to a settlement tank, allowing any remaining heavy items to settle at the bottom. Here the lighter, cleaner water is syphoned off to be sterilised, often using systems such as UV treatment, or chlorine.
Once sterilised, the water is sent to another storage tank before being discharged when the ship is in an area outside of restricted zones, as defined by MARPOL and local regulations.
What about Grey Water?
Because it doesn’t contain the dangerous bacteria found in raw sewage / Black Water, the Grey Water is not required to be treated with the same rigour.
The water is usually skimmed remove obstacles, and then stored for discharge. It will be discharged when the ship is in an area that allows it, again as per the MARPOL regulations.
This can be a problem, because this water does contain microplastics and chemicals such as that from shampoos and conditioners. Many locations are tightening Grey Water discharge restrictions to protect natural environments, and some cruise ships do provide a greater degree of Grey Water treatment than required by the regulations.
What can you do?
If you’re concerned about the environmental impact of the Grey Water you produce, consider swapping to environmentally friendly cleaning products, such as soaps and shampoos that don’t contain harmful chemicals like parabens, SLES, Propylene Glycol, Petrochemical Cleansers or harsh detergents – there’s plenty of options available these days.

Climate Change and the Military: Examining the Pentagon’s Integration of National Security Interests and Environmental Goals under Clinton [Part 9]
Continued from Part 8
Pentagon concern over greenhouse gas emissions remained. Congressional appropriations instructed the military to study large temperature changes in the Arctic Ocean and their possible “impact on global climate change” and comply with Annex V of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution by Ships (MARPOL).[15] At the same time, Roy Salomon, a Pentagon representative in Kyoto in 1997, raised concerns in a summer 1999 article in the Federal Facilities Environmental Journal. He pointed to growing U.S. emissions between 1990 and 1997 and detailed Pentagon energy usage, while noting a challenge during the negotiations was to ensure that emissions reductions did not negatively impact “competitiveness” and military readiness. He touched on other points relating to Defense Department concerns, including the need to ensure that military operations and training were not affected by new reductions (which the Clinton administration recognized) and the Pentagon’s efforts to “improve energy efficiency.” Finally, he stated that the Kyoto agreement represented a “step toward” meeting U.S. objectives “for environmental security and regional stability.”[16]
This post is reprinted from the National Security Archive website and my History Hermann WordPress blog. Archived here.
In the years that followed, military leaders continued to cast themselves as environmentally responsible and committed to environmental security. This included an assertion that the U.S. Navy would have “environmentally sound” ships, a commitment to researching a reduction in chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) use, and calls for more efficient fuel use and alternative fuels. It is probable that these actions transpired, considering that the U.S. Navy declared that its aircraft carriers were “CFC-free” in April 2009, even though discharges by the U.S. Navy of substances that deplete the ozone has been reported.[17] Some sources even asserted that environmental stewardship was integrated into military operations in Balkan War. Military leaders like Rear Admiral Larry C. Baucom professed environmental security and environmental protection to be compatible with Pentagon objectives.[18]
However, the U.S. military retained an arsenal of over 500,000 tons of munitions and consumed millions of gallons of gasoline, with over 2 million gallons consumed by the Army Test and Evaluation Command alone in fiscal year 1999. Because of this, there continued to be calls for military vehicles to conserve fuel and military leaders arguing for a balance between “environmental responsibilities” and the demands of military readiness, necessitating partnerships with various organizations.[19]
All the while, the Pentagon continued to believe that the climate change negotiations were an important way to achieve military objectives. Senior military officers communicated this point regularly, for instance through Bruce Harding at the Pentagon’s Office of the Deputy Under Secretary for Defense, Installations and Environment, who served as a U.S. military representative at climate change conferences in 2001 and 2002.[20]

The Lion King 1 1/2 {original-The Lion King (1994)}
It follows Timon and his New York Jewish meerkat family. The jokes are great
It is a masterpiece that adds to the movie while making it better and not worse. The dig a tunnel song is amazing. It's cute to see snippets of them raising Simba.

I do not own this template!
I honestly think their friendship would be so adorable to watch! Like Sylvia could talk to Minnie about how sweet and romantic Goofy is, as well as an amazing dancer at the 70's disco, and Minnie could talk about how her and Goofy were friends for years etc
Maybe they could even talk about their interests, like the latest books, or Sylvia could talk about 70's fashion, and items she collects, while Minnie talks about 80's fashion (based of Totally Minnie x3), have conversations about their dates and so on.

Old Man [2011]; rated M for Chapter 3 (out of 4); link after preview text:
Only now was it becoming clear that the Other Half was not what Max had believed it to be: a friend. A friend there to guide him, defend him against all abuse from a crazed jock.
Someone who he had fallen into deep lust with for the longest time.. and then...
The black canine stared at the stucco for substitute, wallowing in a cross between enlightenment and self-pity. His left wrist was tightly wrapped in thick gauze, still pulsating from the tension and its release. To not get into deeper trouble with his friends, he decided to wear a thin, long-sleeved sweater, navy blue. Lucky for him it wasn't the right; they would have noticed him wincing his he walked around the kitchen with a heavy pot handle.
Now it was past one in the morning. The world around him had gotten dark around 6 in the evening.
There he lay, bundled up in a warm comforter. But he couldn't sleep, counting the bumps on the ceiling in dim blue light. His eyes stung. He kept on counting...
Bradley.
The word "child" echoed in his mind. He never wanted to be labeled as one since high school. But, was it really true? Was he… immature? Was everything he felt towards him, involved in him, nothing but a selfish, instant gratification? Like what he said, "Don't confuse love with lust!"
Maybe, I like confusing my terms..... Do I?
Motionless, waiting for daybreak, and trying to remove a dark veil from his eyes.
An 8-bit tune filled the room from the dresser nearby. The cell phone vibrated against the wood finish and almost woke the guys up, had it not been for Max snatching it off the ledge and hurting his wrist in the process, "ow owow; fuck."
He flipped it open and heard a single word, "Max."
...
It was now 2 in the morning.
"Max? Are you there?"
It was getting harder and harder to breathe. The boy mentally shuddered at the sound of his voice. About a minute passed by, sounding of static on the other end until a pseudo-snide remark interfered, "Are you alive??" He buried himself under the comforter and responded in a whisper, "Yeah."
"... I'm glad."
"Me too." The boy nearly smiled in the glow of the small screen.
A bit of silence followed before Bradley continued, "Max?"
"Hm?"
"Let's take a breather. Um, let's visit your old man."
Just a tad confused, "What?"
Now a gruff tone, "You heard me."
