More Shows I've Seen Recently
More Shows I've Seen Recently
Another round up of shows I’ve seen recently, just while I get my ducks in order irl. t’s been a great couple of weeks for repeat visits but have managed to squeeze in a couple of new shows as well. Cabaret at the Kit Kat Klub As soon as I saw the casting announcement of Aimee Lou Wood and John McCrea as Sally Bowles and the Emcee, I knew I had to see their performances for myself. One thing I…

At CPAC Dallas, Far-Right Conspiracy Theorists Take the Main Stage to Applause and Fanfare
At CPAC Dallas, Far-Right Conspiracy Theorists Take the Main Stage to Applause and Fanfare
When U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene took the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference’s Dallas gathering on Friday, the crowd broke out in applause. Sara Carter, the conservative journalist who interviewed Greene, launched their discussion by offering the far-right Georgia representative a chance to address criticism that likens Greene’s rhetoric to fascist talking points. “When I…

WORTH A LOOK?: *****
WHEN?: Saturday 24 February, opens 6 March and runs through 11 May 2024 RUNTIME: 160 minutes (including a 20-minute interval)
A grieving son wraps his dying miner father in his arms, apologises for everything he could have done better to look after him and vows to make good by helping others.
The son is Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan, the Labour politician and founder of the National Health Service on 5 July 1945, and Nye is the warts-and-all story of the man who would improve the health of countless millions of us and how he did it.
Nye died almost 15 years to the day he founded the NHS from stomach cancer and the conceit here is that he’s in hospital at the end of his life having a fever dream and wanders, pink pyjama-clad, through moments of importance.
Reading the article by former Labour leader Neil Kinnock in the programme about Bevan we discover his education was cut short at 13 when he followed his miner father down the pits to work in 1910.
In an almost reverse of film Dead Poets Society we meet the bullying schoolteacher who would cane a young Nye because of his speech impediment, the classmates who would protect him and the very Manic Street Preachers-like realisation that free libraries could give him the power to overcome his stammer by finding alternative words to those he could not utter.
Riffing on Dennis Potter’s Singing Detective Sheen’s Nye even sings Judy Garland’s Get Happy at 1 point as he and his miner colleagues use the time unemployment has afforded them to bone up on the way their home town of Tredegar in Wales is run and get themselves elected onto the boards of the bodies involved to finally do good by its people.
From our 4th row seats we see director Rufus Norris, also outgoing artistic director and chief executive of the National Theatre, tread the boards at the beginning of this 1st preview to remind us as such there might have to be a pause in proceedings because of the freshness of the material but perhaps 1 of the reasons its star Sheen is beaming so much during the curtain call (see picture below) is because it all actually went so well.
The action is staged as if in a hospital ward for much of the time with beds on wheels used to great effect and curtains around beds featuring prominently and at 1 point, rather brilliantly, lowering to become rows of seats in Parliament.
Tony Jayawardena (Marjorie Prime, Menier) is quite brilliant as Nye’s nemesis Winston Churchill, a man who succeeds in doing what Labour were unable to by uniting all classes in opposition to world war.
Sharon Small (Good, Harold Pinter Theatre) is more than a match for a revelatory performance by Sheen, at 1 point seemingly channelling the boyish enthusiasm of a young Declan Donnelly from Ant and Dec, as she explains the sacrifices she made to support her husband.
There’s a lot of injustice to make the audience angry here and there’s some terrific political theatre in London at the moment to both challenge the mind and make the heart soar – An Enemy Of The People and Standing At The Sky’s Edge for example.
Like the outstanding Dear England, this is an example of a venue at the top of its game doing exactly what it should be doing in offering insight into stories of those who have shaped our country and influenced the people we have become.

oh, a third question! i am forever charmed by colonel pascal; he's such a wonderful and entertaining original character that stands up so well to all those existing characters that have been around for hundreds of years. for a while i thought he MUST be, like lord pumphrey, from some book series i wasn't familiar with, because he felt so established and fit the world so well. anyway, my question is this: how do you envision the end of his story, in any or all of the soulmate universes?
Oh so sorry I totally thought I posted this but I accidentally saved it to drafts. WHOOPS
I’m so glad you like Pascal. He and Marjorie vie for favorite OC in my head. He was a delight to write though. I like the delicacy of manner he has, it always gives me an excuse for fun metaphors.
In all soulmate universes he becomes a sort of… bridge figure in history of science. His ideas are a bridge between miasma theory and germ theory. One of the people whose work leads to germ theory though the tools of his time don’t allow him to work out germ theory on his own. How widely people adopt his theories and when they do are very dependent on the universe he’s in, but in all universes he gets taught in… like, American 8th grade classrooms when people learn about how we arrived at germ theory but there isn’t a whole unit on him.
I’d say in the Duke universe, his theories are the most popular and get widely adopted but not until the Duke becomes Prime Minister. In the Darcy universe, his theories are developed and refined the earliest but it takes years for people to come in board, but once they do, it becomes a thing. In the Colonel universe, I think he actually ends up taking a while to get to his theory but he becomes the center of intense cutting-edge medical debates in Paris in the 1830s.
In all of them Colonel Pascal meets the person he considers his soulmate in a rom-come way. He hooks up with the nice new naturalist at Kew Gardens and goes to great lengths to avoid going to Friday dinners at his parents house because his mom is trying to set him up with someone and he’s happy with his hook-up. When his mom finally pins him down, who’s at dinner? The nice new naturalist!

what are your thoughts on teddy's relationship with his family and how they were abusive? what about his younger sister?? and his relationship with his ex wife where he was also abused by her 🤔 how do you think these affected his personality and relationships. sorry this is an English essay ass prompt but im genuinely curious lmao i love analyzing family history (obvs)
Light coming in with the big gun from the get-go!!! Hahaha thank you for a great question!!!
So from what we know about Teddy's mom, she's a bit of a Wild Card™. Likes to do what she wants, when she wants, isn't exactly your traditional grandma.
But given the majority of people become docile with age (rather than more adventurous), it stands to reason /why/ she waited until retirement to do all the things she enjoyed? Could that be why her and Teddy's dad always used to argue?
Teddy's age places his parents as either dating or hooking up around the 70s/80s. Assuming they've never left the US, this wasn't exactly a pinnacle time for women's rights.
So we have an oppressive timestamp, a turbulent relationship, and then an extinction burst (Teddy's mom doing ALL her interests in retirement) post-breakup.
These factors together connote that teddy's father may have been restrictive/disapproving of teddy's mother's interests, hobbies, passions - or may be indicative of teddy's father's disdain/nonchalance towards his wife in general. (I'm assuming they were married because 'merica). Which would be an apt representation of Boomer relationships, the whole "can't live with them, can't live without them" (totally healthy /s).
But on the flipside to a potentially controlling father, his mom IS a wild card lol. If she's still up to mad shit in retirement, WHAT was she into in her prime?? Was she Fully Unhinged™? Given her, "muchness" (for lack of better words), it stands to reason it may transfer as "feisty" or "fiery" during arguments with teddy's dad, so whilst his dad may have been authoritarian, his mom may have been inflammatory and antagonistic.
As for his sister GIVE HER SOME GD SCREEN TIME!!!!!!! WHO ARE DANA AND DAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wanna see if she's exactly like Teddy or if she's his antithesis, are they both so interested in learning about the lives of every stranger they meet? That's beautiful bro. I hope so. I both want her to be an almost identical twin to teddy, and to look exactly like her bf Dan (like the Van Houtens in the Simpsons). I think I want Dana to have the spunkiness that teddy lacks. I love the "anxious older sibling, feral younger sibling" dynamics, like what Tina and Louise have. I want an episode where Teddy's in therapy talking to Dr Marjorie about his childhood whilst Dana's out back wrestling a bar fly for his teeth or smn. Same trauma but dealt with in VERY different ways. I need it!!!!!!!!! I deserve this!!!!!!!!! LOL.
Moving onto Denise, FUCK Denise. Fuck any single individual that makes you feel like you have to change your core sense of self in order to feel accepted and/or loved. You KNOW she's that slimy level of manipulative that easily gets her own way in every situation. The type that rarely gets called up but if you call them up everyone else around will take their side. The GOOD manipulators. Real piece of shit types. The type to push you so far into a corner you come out crazy. So crazy noone believes you and they all side with the charismatic one. (These people boil my soul into an angry black jus, I become one of the 4 biles). IIRC we don't even get a full line from her, I'm pretty sure she only says "teddy?" (But please correct me if that's false), but that's still enough to solidify her as a shithouse in my mind. Questioning his name like don't pretend you don't know or recognise him you shitcunt, he gave you so much of his life. Eat a dick.
As negative as all these experiences are, I do think they shaped teddy for the better! I mean, he is a lil anxious and awkward and doesn't have the best self-esteem/confidence. BUT, he's incredibly emotionally intelligent for an old white guy. He's SO full of love, for EVERYONE. Every single person he comes across or meets (as exampled by S12E4 Driving Big Dummy), he fundamentally enjoys experiencing. They're not just people to chat to, they are experiences to be had. They are characters you've never heard of to stories you've never read. His approach to people is polar opposite to how most of us perceive other people, most of us are like Bob, he doesn't /hate/ people, but he doesn't /like/ them either. Teddy DOES like other people, he REALLY likes other people, he put the work into his trauma so it didn't taint the rest of him. I'm not gonna speak on behalf of everyone with PTSD but I know for a lot of us we fester on our trauma and victimise ourselves, often resulting in self- alienation and isolation, teddy shows no sign of that. S8E5 Thanks-Hoarding picks up on teddy being a handyman so he can "fix" his parents relationship (simplifying), but it doesn't address the fact he is CONSTANTLY putting himself out there. Handymen are a word-of-mouth trade, to be a successful handyman you HAVE to put yourself out there. To meet new people is to be vulnerable, and to be vulnerable with PTSD is like a rabbit exposing its belly to an owl yknow? Throughout the entire show we see teddy consistently putting the work in. Into every part of his life, he's making the effort to improve his life. I know healthcare in the US is a privilege that only the capitalists can afford, but it is so refreshing to see an American go to therapy instead of just complaining about how much they need therapy lol (no judgment, again I appreciate it's a nigh impossible situation to escape).
Thank you for the incredibly stimulating question, light!! (Sorry if I didn't answer all the questions fully! Will edit or update later!🤍)

Hello. I'm Marjorie. I guess. Joined this "rotumblr" website because my book club thought they were going to "Promote themselves on social media" or whatever it's called. Whatever. I'm here now. Might as well introduce myself, right? That's what you weirdos do here?
Marjorie. Already said that. That's me. Live in Sinnoh. I train Grass and Bug types. Hobbies include reading, gardening, and occasional painting. Was a gym Challenger back in my prime. Still up for a batttle if you come by. Though I'd rather you didn't. Come by, I mean.
Here's my Trainer Card. it is here twice. Unsure why it is there twice.

Terry the Tangrowth was my first partner. This asshole's been around almost as long as I have. Love him.
Carla is my Yanmega. Too kind, too empathetic, and too loyal. Pet her ONE TIME and she'll never leave your side.
Martha is my Vileplume. She keeps people away from my house - Would YOU go up to the house of the mean old lady with the sneezy old plant? She's a sweet girl though. More patient than I could ever be.
Antonia is my Scolipede. Incredibly full of herself. Do NOT compliment her. She won't leave you alone. Kind, strong, powerful, dignified, and eternally humble. (I am being sarccastic. she is the least humble Pokémon I know.)
Dorcas is my Cradily. She's like an old Liepard - a little persnickety, a little mischievous, but eternally loyal.
Sadie is my Ariados. She's an old-timer too. Retired at this point, doesn't battle. Still as feisty as ever - challenge her and you WILL be webbed to the wall. Don't expect me to help, either. Your fault for getting stuck.
I have a service Espeon, since I'm not exactly the best at getting around. Opens doors, grabs things for me, finds help if I fall. SO much energy. Seriously. Love him, even if he's eternally annoying. Doesn't really have a name, I just call him "You."
//ooc under the cut!
hello! this is doof! i run @pokemoncenterofficial and @curses-and-curiosities, and you can find me outside pokeirl at my very-neglected main @doofisconfused. thought it might be fun to make an older character! i had a lot of fun makin marjorie, and i hope you all like her, too! marjorie is 74, but she'd never admit it. she lives in eterna city, but she refuses to give out any more info on her location than "sinnoh."
marjorie's supposed to be kind of a mean character, but if i'm overstepping it please let me know! magic anons are OFF for her but will be for theo (@pokemoncenterofficial)!

Well well well, if it ain't me being obsessed with @pastelpaperplanes 's Thorns and Thrones AU again
Bonus references:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This story follows two paths.
The first is Marjorie's. He was orginally a girl named Maria, born into the Brock family as the youngest of the two siblings. However, what only his mother knew was that he was the product of an affair. His nature as a prodigy earned him resentment from Kenneth, his older brother, but Marjorie had tried to mend their relationship all their life to no success. The merchant clan he was born in was in good business with the royal family of one of the nearby colonies, the Sumdac family, and through visits, Marjorie and Sari got very close. Everything reached their boiling point however as his already cold and distant father discoved the secret behind Marjorie's birth. And Marjorie, being raised only to be the poster prodigy child and having little room of emotional talk with his family, killed his father with 'Thorn', their most prized sword. After this kill, he battled his brother, who managed to gouge his eye out and Marjorie fled for Cybertron, leaving the family operation to Kenneth. Now, he is trying to find the Decepticons, believing that people like him deserve to be in the same exhile they are suffering through. Not because he feels guilty about his actions, but because he doesn't.
The second one is Sari Sumdac. Having grown up sheltered all her life, and having a strained relationship with her father, life was never as free as Sari wanted. After making first contact with Marjorie, Sari practically begged to be trained in the ways of combat, excusing it as self defense. Marjorie did so, the two bonding over their desire for freedom from their respective families' chains. After she heard of the patricide Marjorie commited, she was crushed, but was too overwhelmed to do anything. However, what sprung her into action was when she found out she was half cybertronian. Despite her father's pleas, she ran away from Detroit, and to Cybertron after learning that Marjorie was also there, with two goals in mind. Find out who she really was, and save her uncle and teacher from his self-pity mission.
(Ignore the signature saying I made this in 2023 instead of 2024, I was tired TvT)

The Mosley Review: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Tumblr media
Do you wanna know why we constantly revisit World War II in film? It isn't because it was the greatest war. It isn't because of the enginuity that came from it. Its because it features the most robust stories ever to be told or discovered whether its from the American or the European campaign. There are probably hundreds of classified documents that are still sealed to this day and it is always fascinating to see them revealed. Yes, we love the heroism in the stories about the front lines, but what's more interesting to see is the internal planning of all Allied Forces and how they're plans get executed. Whether they succeed or fail is the real drama and the stuff of legend that ends up inspiring fictional characters we all know and love. That is what this film lovingly highlights and I have to say it was a smooth and joyful ride has good suspense with great action and comedy. The tone was a bit off at times as it would struggle with wanting to be a smart espionage driven story and a adventure film with little consequence for the heroes in the story.
Tumblr media
Henry Cavill truly charms every moment he's on screen as Gus March-Phillipps. He was a fun leader of the ragtag team of mercenaries and I liked his controlled nature. He never really seemed to have doubts, but he did have a moment or too that he felt challenged. The amount of glee and calm he has in this film was cool in the more action driven scenes. The most standout moment of the film truly comes from his introductive scene as within in five minutes, you understand the man and his motivation. Alan Ritchson was good and brutal as his fellow merc, Anders Lassen. I liked the banter he had with Gus as the film went along and how eager and efficient of a Nazi killer he was. Henry Golding was fun and smart as the explosive expert of the team, Freddy Alvarez. The banter between him and Anders was fun as they would tease each other often. Hero Fiennes Tiffin was good as Henry Hayes and even though he didn't have that much depth, he was effective and a valued navigator in the war occupied Atlantic Ocean. Alex Pettyfer was cool and collected as Gus's oldest friend, Geoffrey Appleyard. You really felt the bond and history between them in the scenes that they had together. Cary Elwes is always a joy to see on screen and as Brigadier Gubbins 'M', he was perfectly royal and commanding as the leader of the secret operation the team is recruited for. Freddie Fox was good as the iconic Ian Fleming and I loved that he was apart of the operation from beginning to end. He wasn't a forgotten character and I liked that he seemed to plotting out his soon to be famous character. Rory Kinnear was fantastic and steadfast as Winston Churchill. He had a dominating presence and sense of urgency that is needed for the legendary Prime Minister. Eiza González and Babs Olusanmokun were fantastic as Marjorie Stewart and Mr. Heron. Their chemistry together was great and I enjoyed their convert planning and business deals. Eiza charms the screen with such control in her more tense dialogue scenes and Babs was that quiet type of dangerous that you never saw coming. Til Schweiger is always intense as a hero or villain and as Heinrich Luhr, there is an amount of sinister motivation in his eyes that made him the marquee antagonist.
Tumblr media
The score by the director's frequent collaborator, Christopher Benstead, was good, quirkie and epic toward the end of the film. I felt the tension in the finale the most thanks to his score as the action kicks off and the plan doesn't go as smooth. Like I said before, the tone was a little all over the place at times since you have so many parts moving at once. Director Guy Ritchie's flair for elaborate planning was on display, but it felt a little rusty in its execution. Its a massive cast so not everyone has a chance to have a moment to shine outside of the action. Maybe some of them didn't really have much to work with or the real people in the true story the film was based on weren't that deep. Either way, I still had fun with the film and I enjoyed the action. Is it gonna be one of the most memorable films of Guy Ritchie's filmography, no, but it'll be a fun one to view once in awhile. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
