Hi! Could you explain your reasons 4 your previous Trastamara Top 10? Have a very happy new year btw
I’m sorry it took so long, but here you go:
Ferdinand II of Aragon - the most fascinating Trastámara as far as I’m concerned. Problematic, controversial, intelligent, witty, cunning, mysterious, manipulative, Machiavellian, imperious, gregarious, energetic, robust, visceral. He gives me eerie vibes, I love how complex he was, how he repressed his inner emotional nature and could be a total asshole, and very opportunistic ruler, even though he was sentimental deep down. The way he co-ruled with Isabella, how he was able to conceal his feelings with a smile on his face, how he managed to get control over Castile back, becoming the arbiter of European politics, even if it meant sacrificing his feelings, his children. Everything about him is utterly fascinating to me, and it’s not always positive. He just makes my head spin. I guess I will always have a soft spot for him, given it was him who prompted me to take a quick Spanish language course, and then persist in my self-teaching to be able to read the books and primary sources pertaining not only to his figure, but also others (there are bios in Polish and English about Isabella and KoA, but not Ferdinand or other Trastámaras).
Katherine of Aragon - I will always have a soft spot for this woman, she was my first favorite historical figure ever, she was the main reason that made me hooked on history. She was courageous, cunning, ambitious, intelligent. She was neither saint nor evil. Although she bears resemblance to both her parents, I think Ferdinand’s traits slightly prevail in her personality.
Isabella I of Castile - she was just as problematic and controversial as her husband. Ambitious, intelligent, intrepid, imperious, dramatic, proud, and yet very feminine and loving towards her family. It’s fascinating how she managed to get the throne, she wasn’t raised to be queen regnant, her education was lacking in many departments, but she didn’t give up, she decided to learn and fight for the crown, and I think she would do whatever it takes to win, including lying, scheming and manipulating.
Juana Enríquez - this woman is so underrated (just like many other Trastámara women on this list), and it’s such a shame, because it’s hard to find books about her even in Spain. I think she and her daughter-in-law had a lot in common, and it’s such a pity they never met, given Juana died in 1468. It’s fascinating how she managed to win her husband’s heart and his trust, he endowed her with considerable powers, appreciated her not only as a woman, but also as a politician, and mind you, Juan II was very sexist and liked to rule personally. Still, Juana proved to be intelligent and intrepid consort with diplomatic skills, even though she often turned out to be way too impulsive.
Maria of Castile - her case is extraordinary, her husband Alfonso V of Aragon never loved her, I don’t think there’s any proof of affection on his part, and yet he held her in certain esteem, valued her brains and as consequence, made her his regent, after he established himself in Napes and decided to stay there. He preferred her over any other deputy, being aware of her talents, and she did a splendid job as such, in spite of her delicate health. I think it speaks volumes about her.
Isabella d'Aragona, the infanta of Naples - I admit I’ve not studied her extensively, given I don’t speak Italian, but there's  a chunk of information about her life in books about her daughter. It’s yet another intrepid woman, who at first was trapped in a loveless marriage, and then ended up living in poverty, struggling to find a place to sleep for herself and her small children. Two of her daughters died while they were wandering around Italy, her only son was imprisoned by the king of France, yet in spite of all those tragedies, she never gave up. Thanks to her tactics and charm she managed to get the Duchies of Bari and Rossano for herself from kings of Naples, and arranged an advantageous marriage for the only surviving daughter.
Joanna of Aragon (Ferdinand’s younger sister) - she’s so unknown that there’s basically one short and old book about her, but from what I read, she was as capable as any woman in this family, earning the trust of her father and brother.
Juana I of Castile - Juana was highly intelligent and talented, and I think if it hadn’t been for her emotional problems, and if she had been allowed to, she would have made a good queen. Also, I feel connected to her on a personal level, because of my own emotional problems.
Leonor de Alburquerque - another underrated and basically unknown Trastámara figure. Although her political role as Ferdinand I’s queen wasn’t as significant and big as her daughters-in-law’s, but as the Dowager Queen and mother to Alfonso V of Aragon, she was of a great help to him, giving him advice through correspondence, and looking after his interests in Castile, where she moved after her husband’s death.
Ferdinand I of Aragon - I will admit, I don’t find him as fascinating as his grandson, and I don’t know as much about him as I do about the other Ferdinand, but you asked about top ten Trastámaras, so I had to come up with someone, however, from my readings it looks like he was a man worthy of admiration, given how he navigated in the maze of politics, acted as regent for his nephew, and established a platform of power in Castile for his sons. He also had a wise marriage policy, involving all his children, and according to some, he laid the precarious foundation for his son and grandson’s policies, pertaining to the unification of the crowns of Castile and Aragon.

Aelin awoke to the scent of pine and snow, and knew she was home. Not in Terrasen, not yet, but in the sense she would always be home, if Rowan was with her.

dorian has the following conversation with kaltain in koa:
A tremor went through his hands, but he balled them into fists. “If I can kill him, should I take the chance?”
“No.” She shook her head. “You would not walk away from it.”
basically, she tells him to do only what is necessary and walk away before he gets killed. after the conversation, dorian sees that manon witnessed it, and she’s pissed:
But Manon’s lip curled back from her teeth. Her golden eyes glowed like embers. “When, exactly, were you going to inform me that you were about the retrieve the third Wyrdkey?”
and they start to argue:
“Morath is suicide.” […]
“We will lose this war if I do not go,” he snapped. “How do you not care about that?”
“I care,” she hissed. “I care if we lose this war. I care if I fail to rally the Crochans. I care if you go into Morath and do not return, not as something worth living.”
or in short: manon admits about caring, and caring about dorian specifically. obviously, they both have been through a lot. and they both want to protect themselves from feeling too much, too intensely. but they can’t help their feelings, and it’s pretty much revealed in this first half of koa, though it’s very subtle:
“You’ll come back [from Morath],” Manon said. It sounded more of a threat than anything.
of course she cares about him, and of course she wants him back unharmed. and so she worries:
The hours that passed were some of the longest of Manon’s existence. From anticipation, she told herself. Of what she had to do.
she tries to reassure herself, but when he comes back, abraxos’s reaction is basically a way of presenting manon’s:
She’d sent Elide into the dungeons of Morath, Darkness damn her. Sending the King if Adarlan into the Ferian Gap was no different. It didn’t stop her breath from escaping when Abraxos stiffened, scanning the sky. As if he heard something they couldn’t. And it was the joy that sparked in her mount’s eyes that told her.
abraxos literally reacts like a puppy whose human comes back home from work, it’s so cute 🥹 and manon’s little reaction, that breath, is enough to tell you about her relief of seeing him again.
AND THEN … the contrast of these scenes … also plays into everything that I just said: after not having allowed him or herself, manon (after admitting that she’s afraid and doesn’t want dorian to leave and being willing to marry him …) she lets him hold and cuddle her … a major change in the relationship before dorian leaves for morath
it’s the subtle, little scenes that make manorian so precious to me 🫶

this scene
Prince Rowan Whitethorn Galathynius, consort, husband, and mate of the Queen of Terrasen, knew he was dreaming. He knew it, because he could see her.
but it gets even more traumatizing
It was her face — or it would be in a few years. When she Settled. But it wasn’t the slightly older features that knocked the breath from him. It was the hand on her rounded belly. She stared toward him, hair still flowing. Behind her, four small figures emerged. Rowan fell to his knees.
and worse
Rowan felt it then. A lethal, mighty black wind sweeping from them. He tried to scream. Tried to get off his knees, to find some way to them.
and worse
He’d felt nothing in the bond since that day on the beach. Nothing.

Aelin was stumbling now, and Lorcan cleared the last of the hills between them. He opened his mouth, to shout what, he didn’t know, but a cry pierced the blue sky. The sob that came out of Aelin at the hawk’s bellow of fury cracked Lorcan’s chest.
there’s not a single picture or gif that describes how I feel every single time I read this passage. it’s literally engraved inside my brain. and the way it makes my heart clench 😩 incredible
