Posidonia of the Balearic islands
Below me, ribbons of light slice through the water and fall onto hole-ridden rocks. In these crevices, jet-black spikes of urchins peak out, threatening swimmers from getting too close. A school of little silverfish flit around a larger sea bream. In just a few minutes I count over twelve different fish species, all occupying their own niche. This high diversity is owed to the same thing that creates the iconic crystal clear water of the Mediterranean, Posidonia. No, it is not some underwater Atlantis with water-cleaning apparatuses, but rather a marine plant. Posidonia is a seagrass that forms vibrant green meadows along the seabed.
I spent a weekend in Ibiza and Formentera, two Balearic islands located just 80 km off the western coast of Spain to observe the wonders of Posidonia for myself. Beyond the enchanting underwater visibility, it offers many ecological functions. For example, it makes a great hiding spot for benthic fishes, octopuses, and other shy aquatic creatures. It also provides a habitat for many marine invertebrates, protects beaches from losing sand via erosion, and sequesters carbon. The Posidonia is endemic to the Mediterranean or in other words, this is the only place in the world it is found. All in all, it is a unique plant with a marvelous ability to create a magical underwater world.
