Quick Updates for Your Home in 2023
Tumblr media
https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/ext_6169494/92495006/4387/4387_original.jpg
Modernizing an outdated home that has been neglected can be difficult. Your entire house does not need to be renovated. Small changes can be made all over your house to give it a more contemporary appearance. These little tasks can help the process appear less overwhelming, let you save money, and let you concentrate on what you want from a significant remodel.
Here are five quick methods to give your house a trendy makeover.
Upgrade Your Appliances and Fixtures
Many older homes still have hardware made of brass or gold. It’s remarkable how little things can have such a large impact on a home. To give your house a fresh look, you have countless possibilities of finishes and fashions. The best part is that you can do it yourself quickly over the weekend. You don’t have to work with experts!
Replacing appliances, however, are more difficult and expensive. There are numerous models available, including refrigerators, dishwashers, and ovens. Depending on your priorities and budget, this may need you to spread it out over a longer period of time. However, replacing outdated appliances with more contemporary models will enhance the look and functionality of your house.
Walls, Floors, and Countertops Should Be Updated
The use of wallpaper is increasing. It’s crucial to keep in mind, though, that outdated trend and decor can give a house a more outdated appearance. A room can look dated if the paint is faded. By cleaning the area and applying a fresh coat of paint, you can maximize the space. A room’s antiqued mirror can add visual interest and a splash of color.
Even if it costs more than other improvements, replacing carpet with gorgeous wood, laminate, or tile may significantly improve a space. If you do a lot of research, you can frequently find excellent choices that are on sale at your local flooring provider. You can clean and refinish hardwood floors for a more modern appearance. Updating and maintaining your floors can be a selling point if you intend to move.
New countertops will also be welcomed by prospective homebuyers. The expense of this house improvement may be high. The options of laminate, concrete and engineered stones may all be reasonably priced. More so than ever, granite is currently more inexpensive. We advise property owners to examine the state of their cabinets if they are considering installing kitchen countertops. It is typical for older cabinets to grow brittle, and ultimately, your cabinets will require replacement, even if you simply want to replace the countertops. Countertops and cabinets both need to be taken out and replaced.
This will prevent you from spending money on countertops twice. This is why the complexity and expense of this particular project may increase. Continue reading about Home remodeling in Las Vegas visit our website: https://www.giclv.com/quick-updates-for-your-home-in-2023/

Choosing the Best Internal Doors for your Home
From reflecting your personal tastes to protecting you and your property in the event of a fire, your choice of doors can have a big impact on your home’s feel and performance, says Charley Ward
A property’s internal doors can fulfil a range of functions. Aside from the obvious privacy benefits, they also have useful soundproofing and insulating qualities, and can make a real aesthetic statement.
“Because of the rise in open-plan living, even really big houses have far fewer internal doors than they used to,” says Elizabeth Assaf, designer at Urban Front.
“Instead, people are opting to make the ones they do have into more of a feature, so they’re often bigger and bolder in colour and have a lot more glazing.”
So what do you need to know to select the right internal doors for your property?
Door opening styles First and foremost, consider how you are going to use the door and the adjoining rooms/circulation areas. Standard hinged models will usually be suitable, but there are certain scenarios that may benefit from a different arrangement.
For instance, do you have narrow corridors or a small bedroom with an ensuite? Installing a pocket door system that slides into the wall may be the best solution here, as it won’t take up floor space or require any strategic positioning of furniture.
“I think in the past, pocket doors were seen as being a bit tacky,” says Elizabeth, “but there are some really good designs now and you can do so much with them. A lot of people install them in rooms where they want a seamless transition between the wall and the door. “The flush fitting means you can’t see a frame, so it’s a really great way of concealing an entrance.”
Tumblr media
This mushroom grey double doorset by JB Kind has a neutral appeal that will work well in modern interiors thanks to its clean lines and slightly textured finish Internal bifold or sliding doors are often used to create a feeling of connectedness between two spaces while also allowing you to close areas off to create more privacy – a great option in an open-plan living zone.
“Putting in room dividers gives you more flexibility,” says Matthew Todd, managing director of Todd Doors. “It can also stop the transmission of cooking smells from the kitchen. Most people opt for glazed panels so that when they’re closed, you still retain the flow of light in the house.”
Internal door materials Whether you like high gloss modern finishes or rustic timber textures, your material choice should be largely informed by your home’s overall aesthetic. A traditional country cottage with exposed beams and a flagstone floor probably won’t suit minimalist glass doors, but would look lovely with the addition of characterful timber options.
Of course, wood is a popular material choice for internal doors and you can find these in styles to suit virtually every scheme.
“For contemporary interiors, many of our clients want the units to disappear into the walls, so they opt for doors with no frame or architrave,” says Elizabeth. “If you’re going more traditional, an oak panel design with ornate handles often works well in these scenarios.”
Glass doors can look stunning, owing to their ability to bring a feeling of light and openness, but this quality also comes with a down side.
Tumblr media
Installing a door set on a pivot rather than a hinge, like this oversized model by Urban Front, can add extra wow factor.
“With glazing, you do have to consider whether you can keep the rooms on the other side tidy,” says Matthew. “They’re suddenly visible all the time. You can’t just close the door and lock away the mess!”
Metal interior finishes have also been growing in popularity lately. “Especially in mews houses, a lot of people have copper kitchens, so they want a copper door to match,” says Elizabeth. “Darker options, specialist metals and more outrageous finishes are definitely in vogue right now.”
These do tend to be pricier then wooden models, but there are similar alternatives if you’re on a tight budget.
“We offer a number of timber units that reflect the look of metal with slim rails and glazing bars to replicate the Crittall-style look from the 1920s and 30s,” says Matthew. “These work great in minimalist loft-style apartments.”
What do internal doors cost? As we’ve seen, options such as metal finishes and glazed panels will push up costs, but generally, the price of a door will depend on whether it’s a solid wood, solid core or hollow core construction.
The latter units are typically constructed from a timber frame, with a plywood or hardwood surface, filled with rigid cardboard and covered with veneer.
“You can find fully finished doors for less than £100,” says Matthew. “A lot of people buy the cheapest one they can find, which is often in its bare state, but then you’ve got to factor in the cost of buying the paint and the time it takes to do it yourself, or a decorator’s fee. So even if it’s a little bit more expensive at the point of purchase, a factory pre-finished door is still going to come in cheaper overall.”
Tumblr media
A pocket door system, like this smart white offering from Todd Doors, can work well in areas with limited floor space.
Solid core veneered versions made from chipboard or particleboard have midrange price tags and mimic the weightiness of solid wood with its associated benefits.
“For a decent quality internal veneer door set, I would expect to pay around £500,” says Elizabeth, “but for top spec you should increase your budget. Our hardwood doors start from £1,800.”
Your decision will come down to what represents value for money for your budget. Installing high quality fixtures in your home will increase its overall worth.
Solid doors are very sturdy, with a thick, highly insulating construction that can boost comfort levels and stop the travel of unwanted noise. A lot of homeowners elect to install this type downstairs, where it’s noisier and people spend more time, and go for cheaper models upstairs.
Standard door sizes All internal doors must meet the UK’s minimum accessibility requirements as outlined by Building Regulations, but aside from that, there’s no specific size they have to be.
A typical door might be 1,981mm (H) x 762mm (W) x 35mm (D), with a width of 838mmor more if wheelchair access is required. When space is limited, smaller doors are usually 686mm wide.
Opting for larger wheelchair accessible entryways means that you will be protected from having to undertake expensive renovation works or having to move in the future, should these become necessary.
Tumblr media
These glazed French doors by Todd Doors allow zones to be closed off while still allowing light to travel throughout the house For those who want to create some wow factor, going for a very large oversized door might also be worth considering.
While these can work on a regular hinge system, installing a pivot, where the door spins around an offset pin, can also help to bring more flair into a room.
“These designs look fantastic sat within really big spaces where they’re used as a room divider,” says Elizabeth, “but it’s primarily a design choice. Everyone we have spoken to who has wanted one of these installed has been keen on making a real aesthetic statement.”

Home Isn’t A Place chapter 4
AO3 | Thulaz + Arranged Marriage AU + historical fantasy
First - Next
Thace looked around, arms crossed over his chest, and inhaled.
The rooms were coming along nicely. The carpet was lush and absorbed the sound of hurried feet, thick curtains framed the wide windows in the parlor and the bathing chamber sparkled with gleaming tile and glass fixtures; the massive bed was draped in soft sheets and a down comforter, the walls were made of polished mahogany, and the entire suite was brightly lit with bronze lanterns and a flood of natural light.
Yet for all the finery, the suite was still casual and homey. Flannel throws lay haphazardly over the couches, books and scrolls rested on nearly every flat surface, the doors between the rooms hung open with boldfaced immodesty; there were already dirty clothes in the laundry from when Thace had spilled lamp oil on his shirt two days ago, and so many people had been coming in and out as they rushed to prepare everything that the new, stale scent of an unused chamber had already dissipated.
There was nothing personal here, yet, it wasn’t lived in. But it looked like it could be. Like maybe, if he kept the right attitude, someday it could be home.
Or, one of two, at least.
“It’s coming along rather quickly, isn’t it?” Lotor murmured, echoing Thace’s thoughts as he stepped up beside him and took in the bustle of servants ensuring all was fit for a noble. “How are you liking it so far?”
“Your husband has good taste,” Thace said. “I’m glad you pointed me his way, I would have ended up hiring a designer if left on my own.”
Lotor laughed. “Well I could hardly leave you on your own when you looked so distressed at the mere thought of picking out curtains. Besides, Shiro finds a strange sense of pleasure in making a house into a home.” He grinned, voice softening with fond amusement. “He took one look at our suite on our wedding night and vowed he wouldn’t spend a single hour in such a cold, ostentatious room. Thankfully my old suite was still untouched and we were able to stay there until he’d renovated the entire wing to his preferences.”
Thace chuckled, imagining the Prince Consort looking around the grandest rooms the palace could offer with blatant disdain. “That sounds like him.”
Silence settled between them, comfortable and familiar, and Thace felt some of the tension and worry tumbling inside him ease.
“I know these are not the most ideal of circumstances for you to enter a marriage,” Lotor said, soft and unobtrusive, “but I am grateful to you. I want you to know that.”
Thace’s gaze slid over to him and he gave a slow nod. “I know.”
Lotor heaved a sigh, eyes closing. “I wish you could have been with someone you loved. I wish there were someone else I could have asked.”
Thace turned back to the activity around them, watching as the suite for him and his future husband came together into something liveable, but grand and respectable enough for a pair of Ambassadors - for a decorated Commander of the mightiest Empire in the world and for one of the greatest soldiers of the most formidable army that had been seen in centuries. This was never where he would have expected his life to lead, never a choice he thought he would have to make, but… “If this is the price of peace, of stability for the Empire and for our men to be able to go home,” Thace said, his own resolve strengthening just from saying the words out loud, “then it is a low price. I am more than willing to pay it.”
He could see Lotor’s brow furrowing from the corner of his eye, pinched with thought and concern. “The Premier has assured me that his cousin is approaching this with maturity and optimism. He wants this to work, not just for the sake of diplomacy, but for the two of you as well.”
Thace nodded, waiting, recognizing by the look on Lotor’s face that he was sorting through his thoughts as he spoke.
“I believe that, at the very least, this marriage will be a comfortable one,” Lotor said slowly, carefully, the lines on his face easing back into the neutral expression he always wore. “But…” he flicked a glance over at Thace. “But I hope for your sake that it can be more than that.”
Thace’s eyes burned and he blinked to clear it away, giving Lotor a brief nod in thanks for his rare display of honest care. “I do as well.”
The silence returned for a long moment before Lotor drew himself up, squaring his shoulders into the proud set of an emperor. “They’ll be arriving soon; we should go.”
Thace took a minute to settle his own nerves, rearranging his emotions into something orderly and composed, and then gestured for his liege to lead the way.
~~~
The Prince Consort and a posse of servants and nobles were all gathered at the foot of the palace steps, guards lining the walkway all the way to the gates at regular intervals. It was a formal gesture, though not overly ostentatious; all the pomp was being saved for the wedding.
Lotor headed straight for his husband, bending to place a kiss on his forehead and wrap his arm around Shiro’s waist. Thace found an empty space on the fringes, clasping his hands tightly behind his back to hide the way they’d started shaking.
The retinue from Marmora arrived less than twenty minutes later. Thace heard the echo of the cry to open the gate and watched the massive doors swing open, letting in a line of coaches, guards, and a supply wagon. As soon as the horses had come to a halt, the door of the head coach swung open and Ezor leapt out, dancing over to Lotor and giving a cheery salute in greeting.
Thace’s eyes went back to the carriage as the Premier and his husband stepped out, tugging at the hems of their clothes and blinking in the bright sunlight. The last person to climb down was unfamiliar, but Thace assumed him to be Ulaz and took the chance to look him over uninterrupted.
He wasn’t tall, but he wasn’t short either - right in the range of average - and his movements were graceful as he stepped through the doorway and onto the ground. He was built like a soldier, lithe and strong with broad shoulders and a trim waist. His hair was worn in the fashion of most Marmoran officers - shaved clean on the sides - with his particular style being a narrow strip left along his crown, the white strands tied off in a long tail that hung down to his shoulder blades. He had a strong jaw and a severe face, not angry but solemn and serious. He was handsome.
Lotor greeted Kolivan and Thace, fist over his heart, as the Marmorans mirrored him with flat palms and shallow bows. “Welcome to Daibazaal,” he said, grand and formal.
Kolivan nodded, hands folding behind his back in the rigid posture of all military men. “Thank you, Your Majesty. We appreciate the hospitality.”
Lotor shook his head. “Not at all. Please, let me introduce you to everyone.” He snaked an arm around Shiro’s waist and gestured wide with the other. “This is my husband, Takashi Shirogane.”
“You can just call me Shiro,” Shiro said, a friendly smile gracing his face as he clasped forearms with all three Marmorans.
They murmured their greetings in return and followed along politely as Lotor lead them down the line of the gathered nobles who were deemed important enough to require introductions right away. The head of the palace staff was there too, promising that all of his people would be more than pleased to take care of any and every need the guests may have during their stay, already doling out orders to a few of the servants to begin collecting the luggage to stow in the prepared rooms.
Finally, lastly, they came to Thace.
His hands were sweating, wedged in a tangled knot at the small of his back, but his voice was steady and calm. “I’m Thace,” he said, holding his hand out for Ulaz before anyone else. In any other situation it would have been impolite to skip over the Premier, but everyone knew that this was the only reason Thace was here at all; this was the meeting that mattered.
Ulaz grasped his forearm firmly, the palm of his hand warm on Thace’s skin even through the layer of his shirt. “I am Ulaz,” he said. His voice was accented slightly, a little different from the Premier’s own, but it was also low and smooth and rich, as firm as ice and as gentle as a flowing stream. Thace could write odes to his voice.
Their hands stayed clasped for a long moment, gazes roaming over each other with unashamed curiosity, and Thace was positive he saw a spark of appreciation in Ulaz’s eyes. If he was even half as pleased with Thace’s first impression as Thace was with his then maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.
Lotor clapped his hands together once, breaking the spell, and Thace turned to him, dropping Ulaz’s hand. “Well, now that that’s taken care of how about we get the three of you settled in your rooms? I’m sure you would like a few hours to rest and clean up before the evening meal.”
Shiro came forward and swept his arm out toward the palace entrance. “If you’ll come with me I can show you the way.” The Marmorans followed after him, Shiro’s polite tone dwindling away as they headed up the steps.
Thace watched them go, eyes drawn to the broad expanse of a particular back and shoulders and wondering if they were as firm and strong as they looked.
Lotor stepped up beside him and Thace glanced over to see he had a brow raised in question. “So, what do you think?” Lotor asked.
Thace mulled it over for a second, turning his gaze forward again. “I have no complaints so far,” he managed, cheeks feeling a bit warm.
Lotor threw his head back and laughed.
alibu is a beautiful city famous for its beaches, natural hiking trails, and the many celebrities that have homes in its region.
With a mix of laid-back attractions and upscale luxury hotspots, there are so many places to see and places to go within the vibrant, sunny town.
With so many choices, you might not know how you can spend your time here or where to head to first.
To help you out, here’s our travel guide for the 28 best and fun things to do in Malibu, California.
Things To Do In Malibu
1. Point Dume State Beach and Preserve
If you’re seeking a quintessential Malibu beach, Point Dume State Beach and Preserve must be on your list of places to visit.
This gorgeous expanse of sandy beach, decorated with an overhang of cliffs and headlands and packed with coves of rock, is a beautiful spot to relax and have fun in the sun!
Operated and maintained by the County of Los Angeles, this beach provides all sorts of facilities.
Whether you want to fish, dive, swim, or surf, there’s plenty that you can enjoy at Point Dume State Beach and Preserve.
Between the months of December and April, you can even spot California gray whales as they migrate for the season!
A hiking trail within Point Dume State Beach and Preserve brings you up a short but interesting hike that rewards you with delightful views of the Santa Monica Mountains, Santa Monica Bay, and even Catalina Island.
The clearer the day, the better!
These views can be enjoyed thanks to a unique mix of terrain from dunes and coastal bluff.
Near to its summit, you’ll find a lovely viewing platform and some paths that lead to lesser-known, more isolated beaches.
Address: Cliffside Dr &, Birdview Ave, Malibu, CA 90265, United States
2. The Getty Villa
When the Getty Villa was opened, it was subject to a fair bit of controversy, especially from art experts.
The museum was opened in a faux Malibu villa that was designed based on the famous Villa dei Papiri ruins of Herculaneum.
It was established by J Pau Getty, an oil magnate, and earned much derision when it began operation in 1974.
Today, it has grown into one of the city’s best things to see.
Getty used the villa as a home for his personal holdings, and after some renovation, the Getty Villa was converted into a genuine museum to store antiquities from the Mediterranean that Getty had collected.
For nine years, work was done on the building by expert architects, and the villa finally reopened in 2006 to much higher praise.
Over 1,200 different artifacts are on display at the Getty Villa.
Most date back to between 6,500 BC and 500 AD and have a wide range of themes, ranging from the Trojan War to ancient Gods and Goddesses.
Seminar rooms, temporary exhibitions, conservation labs, and research libraries are also scattered about.
There are a couple of hundred rooms at the Getty Villa, each one numbered and named based on its theme.
Room 113 maps out civilizations over the years, room 101 contains multiple Greek artifacts including a statue of Aphrodite dating back 2,500 years, and room 108 holds a magnificent statue of Hercules that is almost two millennia old!
There is also room 105, fitted with a large drinking horn, room 212, which is packed with Roman coins and gemstones “guarded” by a miniature bronze skeleton, and room 217, which packs a delightful and unnerving fertility goddess statue from 3,000 BC.
In addition to all of that, the Getty Villa is home to the University of California’s Archaeological and Ethnographic Conservation program.
There is also a lovely English ivy and rose garden outside dotted with majestic Roman statues.
Do note that a visit to this museum requires booking a ticket in advance, though tickets are free!
Address: 17985 Pacific Coast Hwy, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272, United States
3. Adamson House
Termed as one of the best places to visit in California, the Adamson House is a stunning marvel of architecture that looks out over the Malibu Lagoon State Beach.
Often referred to as the Taj Mahal of Tile, it has an eccentric and unique but undeniably beautiful interior that was likely originally designed with promotional intent.
In 1929, May Knight Rindge and Frederick Hastings Rindge had the estate constructed upon 13,000 acres of gorgeous land, encompassing the city and terrain with Spanish settlers.
The Rindges were entrepreneurs who operated a dairy farm and, in 1926, opened Malibu Potteries
The pottery company made a wide range of different ceramic tiles with different motifs, inspired by different cultures and muses, each one ornate and stunning.
Some of these tiles would go on to be installed at the Roosevelt Hotel, Los Angeles City Hall, and even the Mayan Theater.
The Adamson House was built by the Rindges as a wedding gift to their eldest daughter.
Built resembling Mediterranean Revival design, a few unique Rindge features made it one-of-a-kind – specifically, the multiple ceramic tiles.
A “Persian rug” in the entrance of the home spans 60 feet and is made up entirely of tiles.
Custom tiles pepper the rest of the interior, ranging from Art Deco to Native American and from nautical to Andalusian in theme.
The bathrooms, kitchen, floors, fountains, pool, and even benches are covered in them, almost top to toe!
Sadly, the pottery company shut down in 1932 when a fire burned down its factory.
In California, visiting the Adamson House is what to do if you want to view the greatest work of this family business in its truest form!
Address: 23200 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265, United States
4. Zuma Beach
Zuma Beach is one of the finest of the Malibu Beach options that dot California’s portion of the East Pacific Coast Highway.
It’s the biggest that the city has to offer, making it a hotspot and one of the main points of interest for some beachside enjoyment.
With 105 acres of land, 1.8 miles of clean beachfront, a couple of thousand parking spaces, beach wheelchairs, and tons of facilities, it’s a wonderful spot to head to!
A wide range of activities can be partaken of at Zuma Beach.
The golden sand is great for lounging and building sandcastles, the many lifeguards allow for safe surfing and swimming, nets make for good beach volleyball spots, and those with a permit can fish to their hearts’ content!
A smattering of eateries, ranging from casual to fancy, let you sate your hunger without ever fully leaving the beach area!
If you come by in the winter, you might get to watch the dolphins and seals, and all year round, the ridge above the beach lets you hike for a lovely view.
Still, regardless of the season, it’s a great spot to head to this weekend, though you should expect it to be somewhat crowded!
You should also be prepared for cool water that’s lower in temperature than some other beaches.
Address: 30000 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265, United States
5. Leo Carrillo State Park
Leo Carrillo State Park is a prime spot for sightseeing.
You might recognize its name, as it is named after conservationist and actor Leo Carrillo.
Carrillo is perhaps best known for appearing in Cisco Kid as the character Pancho.
For an impressive total of 18 years, he served the California Beach and Parks Commission and played a crucial role in the local acquisition of San Simeon’s Heart Property.
This state park, named in his honor, is primarily a long beach stretch spanning 1.5 miles.
A wide range of activities, such as beachcombing, swimming, windsurfing, and surfing, are commonly undertaken here.
Exploring the stretch will let you find coastal caves, tide pools, backcountry trails, campgrounds, and even interpretive displays.
As a dog-friendly beach, Leo Carrillo State Park is a great place to bring your leashed dogs.
With its relatively secluded location and serenity, a visit here to bask in the sun is one of the top things to do in Malibu.
Lots of wealthy celebrities and business people live in the city, and a huge majority of them probably get their groceries from Malibu Country Mart.
Located in the Malibu Civic Center of California, the mart spans 6 acres and provides a range of high-end shopping, dining, and play options.
Whether you’re looking for couture fashion, fancy dinners, pampering, or even repair work, this shopping avenue has turned into one of the city’s tourist attractions in its own right.
Often called a boutique mall, multiple different buildings make up this lifestyle center.
Each one is surrounded by stunning gardens fitted with playgrounds, sculptures, picnic spaces, and eateries.
The structures themselves are made in many different designs, including rustic, Spanish, Mediterranean, and even modern architecture.
Upscale brands like L’Occitane, All Mankind, and John Varvatos can be found in the hub, as well as more localized offerings.
Desserts here are very popular, with places like Malibu Kitchen offering sweet treats and Grom Malibu famous for gelato.
Despite how busy it can get, the Country Mart is also quite laid back.
9. Solstice Canyon
Solstice Canyon is situated in the Santa Monica mountains and has huge historical value.
A quick two-mile hike of low difficulty can bring you right up to the greatest spots – or if you want more of a challenge, a much more strenuous hike spanning six miles.
Flanked by tall, cascading waterfalls, Solstice Canyon is home to a stone house “shell” that remains in the area, dating to the year 1865.
It was built by a man named Matthew Keller and is believed to be this California city’s oldest stone building that is still standing.
It’s actually lasted through multiple wildfires before ultimately being destroyed by the Corral Fire of 2007.
Its walls, though bare-bones, are one of the most fascinating Malibu attractions.
Though the waterfalls of Solstice Canyon can get crowded, they truly are beautiful and relaxing, and most find them to be worth the visit.
It is no doubt, one of the most beautiful places in the US!
Address: 3455 Solstice Canyon Rd, Malibu, CA 90265, United States
10. Malibu Creek State Park
Malibu Creek State Park provides some of the city’s most peaceful and lovely campgrounds, as well as top locations for sightseeing.
It is often considered the Southern California region’s Yosemite and is widely referred to as the Santa Monica Mountains’ crown jewel for recreation.
With more than 8,000 acres of land and countless things to see, this state park boasts oak savannas, plains of tallgrass, thick forests, and sharp mountain and hill peaks.
It first opened its doors in 1976 and, for a long time, was owned by 20th Century Fox Studios.
It is here that certain terrain was used in the filming of things like M*A*S*H and 1968’s Planet of the Apes.
While at this state park, you can explore the hiking trails – such as the beautiful 15-mile oak and sycamore woodland trail by the stream – go riding, or try some climbing.
There is even some wildlife roaming around that you can try and spot.
Most stunningly, little of it has changed over the past several millennia when it was only lived in by the Chumash!
11. Malibu Farm
Malibu Farm Restaurant and Malibu Farm Cafe are two of the go-to places to visit if you want a healthy meal with locally and mindfully sourced ingredients.
Both are located on the Pier.
The Farm Restaurant isn’t just popular for its waterfront location, but for its pride in using farm-to-table meals, with many ingredients taken from California.
After all, this is California, so you know the vineyards are aplenty!
Here are some of the places you can try.
14. El Matador State Beach
El Matador State Beach, California may be small, but it’s certainly beautiful, and its combination of rocky outcrops, stone formations, and caves creates many places to see.
One of the more laidback Malibu beach locations, it’s a little ways past Leo Carrillo State Park.
As a small and lesser-known beach, El Matador State Beach doesn’t have a lot of facilities and doesn’t have lifeguards.
This provides more privacy but a little less accessibility.
A steep gravel path brings you onto the sand.
Come at the right time to watch either the sunrise or sunset!
Address: 32350 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265, United States
15. Surfrider Beach
One of the best things to do in Malibu for surfers is to head to the fun and famous Surfrider Beach.
Known as a World Surfing Reserve, this beach boasts three point breaks in the waves that have grown incredibly popular among shortboarders and longboarders alike.
The first point is the most famous with the most crowded sands, but it’s a great spot for novices.
The second and third points are more known for being ideal for shortboarding.
17. Escondido Falls
Escondido Falls boasts the tallest waterfall in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Spanning 150 feet in height, it’s one of those sights you shouldn’t miss, especially if you love beautiful places.
The two-tiered waterfall gushes down onto moss-covered limestone rocks.
To get to Escondido Falls, you need to travel about 3.8 miles via a private road beginning at Winding Way East.
You’ll have to be ready to hop across streams and rocks before you even first arrive at the 50-foot Lower Escondido Falls.
Stop here for a quick rest and continue on if you’re willing to go the distance via the safe official route to the Upper Escondido Falls.
It’s a steep climb, but with some provided rope, your efforts will be rewarded!
Do note that during hotter months in California, droughts may dry out the Escondido Falls, so plan accordingly.
Even if it’s a little dry, though, the hike up is quite fun and the pictures will be memorable if you’re looking for stuff to do!
18. Malibu Hindu Temple
Contrary to its name, the Malibu Hindu Temple is not actually in the city but is near to it in Calabasas, California, within the Santa Monica mountain area.
Despite its huge differences compared to the estates, tract homes, and modern fancy houses surrounding it, the Hindu Temple actually often goes overlooked, but pay attention and you’ll be rewarded with a delightful, beautiful, and thoughtfully made place of worship.
This temple is dedicated to Venkateswara, the Lord of Venkata and a Hindu god.
It formally contains other alters to differing deities, as many Hindus are polytheistic.
Rooms within perform different functions and are just as beautiful.
A sanctuary dedicated to the god Shiva is fitted with gorgeous tiered chandeliers, an underground chamber that serves as a traditional music recital and religious service space, and an outdoor deck that has multiple shrines.
For those interested in other cultures, this Hindu Temple is one of the must do tourist attractions, as long as you’re willing to travel out of the city.
Just remember to be respectful, especially if you spot priests praying or chanting, or if you see some holy water gifting in the temple.
Duke’s Malibu will take you away from California and transport you – metaphorically – to Hawaii!
A restaurant-bar, it’s situated so near to the waterfront that you might get splashed as you sit here – but if you’re looking for what to do when you’re hungry, this is a great choice!
The eatery is named after Duke Kahanamoku, a Native Hawaiian master waterman, and Olympian, famous for his surfing and swimming prowess.
It is thanks to him that surfing was popularized across not just California, but America and the rest of the world.
Today places like Duke’s honor the great man’s legacy.
It offers stunning views of the ocean, but even inside, the decor provides many things to see with its surfboards, funky colors, and fun, lively style.
It’s pretty popular with both tourists and locals and boasts a laid-back but vibrant atmosphere, with more romantic touches on the veranda.
Some of the more popular things to order at Duke’s are its furikake ahi tuna, coconut shrimp, hula pie, and other Hawaiian-inspired specialties.
Beer, tropical cocktails, and special foods make delicious and inviting offerings for all.
A fun spot with a modern, sleek design, delicious food, and gorgeous panoramic views of the ocean, add this to your itinerary if you’re in the mood for upscale meals.
Nobu is run by Nobu Matsuhisa, a famous “Iron Chef” who serves up delicacies like Tiradito, Rock Shrimp Tempura, and Black Cod Miso.
The Executive Chef, talented Gregorio Stephenson, has some of his own offerings, like Ribeye with Truffle Butter Sauce.
The pair are known for their exquisite dishes, and you’ve probably seen the restaurant itself plastered on the social media pages of celebrities like Liam Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus, or any Kardashian or Jenner.
Located on the Pacific Coast Highway, Nobu has a prime spot on a low cliff perched above a beautiful beach.
Its architecture is distinctly Japanese.
A lounge upstairs with exterior seating provides relaxation, and a bar has a number of great drinks to sell.
Address: 22706 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265, United States
24. The Roberts House
The Roberts House is named after its commissioners, Fred and Florence Roberts, who had the house built in 1952.
However, it is also often called the Williams House after its architect Paul Williams, who was one of the first certified African-American professionals in his field on this side of the Mississippi.
The home was intended to be Polynesian-styled and its magnificence earned it features in Architectural Digest, but unfortunately, it was also wrought with irony.
Fred Roberts requested that Williams use a lot of fire protection for the home.
Williams therefore only used materials resistant to fire, but even his genius mix of water-collection pools, pumps, and pipes could only hold off for so long against the fearsome regional wildfires.
In 1982, a fire rushed through the area and pretty much all but decimated the historical home.
Its remains were as ironic as they were sad: a bomb shelter, bathtub, four fireplaces, a studio, and the home’s foundation were all that were left.
Today, those ruins still stand, acquired in 1988 by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy thanks to real estate developer Bill Dempsey.
For those who enjoy a little touch of melancholic history, a trip to the Roberts House may be one of the top things to do in Malibu.
If you go on a clear day, you’ll be treated to some truly incredible views of the Channel Islands, Anacapa Island, Mount Baldy, and Santa Cruz Island.
The trails themselves, though, are worth it even on less clear days.
The ranch is filled with paths to follow for many different levels of experience.
Some unique flora and fauna, native to the coastal location, can also be spotted.
You can even settle down in some of Circle X Ranch’s dedicated picnic and camping locations!
Bird watching, beachcombing, swimming, and surfing are pretty common at the Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach.
With its prime spot between Point Dume State Beach and Leo Carrillo State Park, it’s a good “middle ground” to try out if you want some more serenity but don’t want it to be entirely deserted.
Three pocket beaches, or coves, cover Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach, known by the names El Matador, El Pescador, and La Piedra.
They are all equally beautiful, and paths help guide you to each one depending on what your mood is.
Though they can fill up during the summer months, they’re peaceful and quiet in the off-seasons.
There are even places where you can go surfing and swimming, with many coastal areas to check out and explore.
Want to stay at Point Mugu State Park for a prolonged amount of time?
11 TOP TRENDS IN KITCHEN CABINETRY DESIGN FOR 2021
Keep those counters clean by hiding stuff in shelves!
Kitchen cabinetry is not just for storage. It is an essential element to your kitchen’s style when doing a kitchen remodel.  Cabinetry is the crown jewel that brings everything together.  Cabinet design has not changed much over the last few years; at least not as much as other elements such as countertops or flooring. But here are still a few evolutions that have happened to kitchen cabinets over time.
Today, above anything else, there is a rising movement towards a streamlined look that focuses on simplicity and minimalism. Here and there however, you will find some wild and bold options popping up.  2021 will see both styles get their fair share of love from homeowners. While simple clean cabinetry will keep getting popular, some homeowners will prefer unique customized styles that will make a clear statement.  To design the perfect kitchen, it is important to understand what is imperative to you and then incorporate the latest trends around that. Here are the 11 hottest trends that will dominate kitchen cabinetry design in 2021.
Samuel Design Group
Illuminated overtop shelves look stylish and modern.
Open shelves look beautiful in the magazines, but not necessarily a “must-have” for most homeowners.  Lets face it, you have to have a matching set of dinnerware or specialty pieces you want on display.  But with good organization and the right kind of shelves, you can create a really unique cutting edge style for your kitchen.  Open kitchen shelves instead of wall cabinetry is becoming an even hotter trend. While you may find it hard to go without your beloved closed door wall cabinetry, open shelving has plenty of benefits. It introduces a light and airy feel offering the illusion of more space which is especially great in smaller kitchens.  It’s efficient, since you can see and grab what you need without taking the time to open cabinet doors to look inside.   Considering everything is out in the open, be thoughtful about whatever you place on the shelves. Every utensil, bowl or glass has an impact on the overall aesthetic of your kitchens look and feel.
Here is where you might find similar-colored utensils that create a more uniform look. You can also use wine bottles, mason jars, and fruit bowls as decorative elements. If you have a favorite coffee mug or special recipe books, use them to make the shelving more interesting. But as you mix and match all these elements, think about their individual colors and styles. Try to create a harmonious look that minimizes the risk of clutter that comes with open shelving.  For small kitchens, be careful not to overload the wall shelving. Keep only the bare essentials and place the rest in your items in the base classic style kitchen cabinet. Not only will it make it easier to keep everything well organized, it will help you maintain a sharp look.
Sebring Design Build
This gray island cabinet has blue undertone for a more personalized feel.
Homeowners are no longer satisfied with cookie-cutter kitchen designs. They want something unique that builds character and personality or provides a bold statement. Color is one of the most effective ways to take notice. A different color of paint on your cabinets can make all the difference and separate you from the pack.  Manufacturing companies are taking notice too.  Even though they provide the latest and greatest finish colors, they are still appealing to the masses.  So, they have teamed up with paint companies to provide a limitless array of color for you to be inspired by.
For cabinetry, homeowners are favoring customized colors that perfectly fit their kitchen spaces. Neutral colors are currently big favorites with tones like grey, yellow and soft greens but don’t count out the darker color pallet. Black, navy, and emerald green has the high-end allure many desire.
There are three major color categories you can choose from: light, medium, and dark. Light tones are mostly the neutrals mentioned above. They are loved for their simple, soft clean look. They project a timeless style, perfectly complementing other elements in the kitchen. Medium toned hues are the most common. Here, standard shades of blue, grey and yellow are popular.  On the extreme end of the scale, there are dark shades. Here, emerald green, inky black, navy blue and jeweled plumb tones are common in kitchen cabinetry. Dark shades are the boldest, creating drama and unsurpassed luxury. Still, they are less popular compared to medium and light shades.
Basically, homeowners are seeking out unique colors that not only stand out but work specifically for their kitchen. If you are ordering custom made cabinets, you can choose any color you want. If you already have cabinets and want to renovate them, either get a professional painter or get ready for some extensive DIY painting work.
Oak wood cabinetry is starting to creep back into the kitchen and bathroom marketplace with Cerused and driftwood finishes. In the 1970’s well into the early 90’s, they were the cabinet of choice. Usually seen in a honey spice stain, a version of a raised panel cathedral door with wild grain patterns became the mainstay in many homes at that time.  After a much-needed departure, the popularity of maple, cherry and a rise of engineered wood alternatives reduced the use of oak cabinet constructions. Materials like wood veneer and painted MDF are now more common in cabinet door construction than ever. But as with other parts of the house, many homeowners are seeking connections to their past and a renewed attention to vintage, with kitchens being no different.
The appeal?  Neutral color, dimension & texture, and newfound soft luxury that can be layered into any space creating a blended balance. Oak cabinetry is versatile in its look from seaside or French cottage, clean modern simplicity or a common rustic look.  Often creating a connection to the natural element. This is why oak, despite its stigma with the past, is becoming more popular option in cabinetry construction.  Manufacturers are crafting a variety of interesting door styles–from recessed panels to flat slabs with an inset detail and finishes using oak. You can use oak in its natural color or opt to give it a coat of paint.  Shades of black, blue, & grey seem to be a rising favorite for homeowners.
Keep it simple with white cabinets and minimal appliances.
Minimalism is the perfect style trend of the kitchen area where organization, cleanliness, and efficiency would be the holy trinity. It enables clear, clutter-free surfaces and stylish and sleek materials—what more would you ask for? And minimalism certainly does not have to look boring or unfinished.
Since the kitchen is definitely the workhorse on the house, it may not be easy even to picture getting a minimalist take on one. But simply because less is more with regards to minimalist interiors, this does not mean the area needs to be empty. The appearance must be clean but loaded with luxe stone, gorgeous finishes, and sleek appliances.
We love the white backsplash that works well with the white cabinetry.
Kitchen cabinetry has not been spared the modernization wave that has influenced home décor in recent years. One of the most obvious impacts has been the adoption of clean aesthetics in cabinetry constructions. This minimalism trend is likely to continue into 2021 and beyond.   Modern cabinets are free of the ornate design work often found in traditional modern kitchen cabinet door styles. They feature a recessed panel door with smooth edge profiles and simple clean lines offering only the simplest of design elements. Even the handles themselves come in low profile styles, not demanding too much attention. Essentially, all the clutter has been pared down to the bare minimum.  This type of cabinetry works perfectly with a modern styled kitchen, complementing other components like the countertop and the backsplash.
Bright yellows, turquoise, blues, and reds for this lively kitchen.
Thanks to technology, homeowners today have an almost endless list of cabinet finish colors and techniques. From warm browns to weathered gray, the choices are mind-boggling. For more ideas, check out our Dark american kitchen cabinet article.  Homeowners are taking advantage of these unique choices.  One of the upcoming trends in 2021 involves mixing different finish colors for a completely unique look. You might have the upper cabinets finished in painted white while the base cabinetry is a natural wood look.  It is all about creating an interesting design by combining different bits and pieces.
One easy way is by making the island a different finish color than the perimeter cabinets.  Since the island is more like a piece of furniture, it’s an easy breakaway piece that you can feel comfortable being bold.  We are seeing lots of black, navy, and chocolate brown at this station.  But don’t just limit yourself to just those options. If you want to take it a step further, you could try mixing two stark colors like black and white or what about going green?  As long as there is a wood element in the space you can’t go wrong.  However, this may require neutral colors for the countertop, walls, and flooring.  Like with most other areas of the house, homeowners are looking to create personal styles with bold statements rather than use boring cookie cutter designs. This trend is just an expression of the desire for more personality.
How to Design Functional and Multipurpose Kitchen Islands
Islands are an essential part of any larger kitchen layout, increasing counter space, storage space, and eating space as well as offering a visual focal point for the kitchen area. Serving a variety of functions, they can be designed in a variety of different ways, with some incorporating stools or chairs, sinks, drawers, or even dishwashers and microwaves. To determine which elements to include and how to arrange them, designers must determine the main purpose or focus of the island. Will it primarily serve as a breakfast bar, a space to entertain guests, an extension of the kitchen, or as something else? And with this function in mind, how should it enhance the kitchen workflow vis-à-vis the rest of the area? These considerations, combined with basic accessibility requirements, necessitate that the design of the island be carefully thought out. Below, we enumerate some of essential factors of kitchen island design.
The size of the kitchen island is extremely important for both aesthetic and functional reasons. An island that is too large will overwhelm the kitchen area and inhibit movement, potentially limiting the workflow of someone cooking or washing the dishes and thereby lowering the functionality of the space. Thus, an island should have at least four feet of space around it on each side, leaving enough room for appliances to open and for people to walk comfortably through the area.
In contrast, an island that is too small may indicate that the island was unnecessary to begin with, adding little enough counter space, storage space, appliances, and seating space that it should be replaced with a cart or table instead. If the kitchen is small enough that the island must be less than two or three feet in length, it may better serve its users to leave the space open. Thus, an ideal kitchen island should be at least three feet wide, and at least four feet long to accommodate either double Island cabinets or a bar overhang. A kitchen large enough to accommodate an island should be at least 13 feet long.
Finally, the height of the island is typically either 36 or 42 inches high, the former being a comfortable counter height and the latter permitting a higher bar area for elevated seating. Islands that are 42 inches high often have two levels or tiers to accommodate seating and counter space separately. Two-tiered islands permit more creative designs and variations, but counter-height islands are simpler and facilitate more uniformity.
Depending on the size of the kitchen and the desired workflow for users, kitchen islands can have a varying number of appliances, including a sink, microwave, dishwasher, or even a stove. For designers hoping to keep it simple, it may be best to house only drawers and modern kitchen cabinet in the island alongside a breakfast bar or seating. For clients who are avid cooks and want expanded kitchen stations or additional cooktops and sinks, adding the aforementioned appliances come with an additional set of important considerations. An island sink should either be accompanied by an island dishwasher or placed in close proximity to a dishwasher against the wall. If a stovetop is incorporated, it may be best to do away with the breakfast bar, and a range hood must be installed as well. Finally, adding outlets to the island could prove highly beneficial for cooks consulting recipes or guests seated at the breakfast bar. To avoid overcrowding the island, the designer should choose carefully which appliances to include rather than selecting them all.
These considerations are closely related to the issue of kitchen workflow. As with any interior space, the designer is responsible for considering flows of movement and areas of pause as well as expected routines and appliance relationships. For example, again, a sink should be placed near a dishwasher, and drawers for bins near the sink. Likewise, it’s essential to have counter space near a sink or a stove, but a breakfast bar generally should not bleed into a cooktop or the people seated will be directly exposed to the fumes and the heat of the cooking. However, adequate spacing or tiers, if done well, can circumvent this requirement. Moreover, a common rule called the ‘working triangle’ indicates that each workspace – i.e. a stovetop, sink, fridge, or oven – should be between four and nine feet apart. This rule is an important reason why the designer should not overload the island with appliances, and adhering to it will allow users to work as comfortably and efficiently as possible. Finally, although designers may hope to include as much seating as possible, seats too close together may inhibit users from eating comfortably without bumping elbows or otherwise running into each other. Naturally, ergonomic concerns are an inescapable part of designing for spaces as active as the kitchen.
Storage considerations tie to considerations of appliances and workflow, as the designer must strike a delicate balance between incorporating additional workspaces and maximizing storage in the kitchen island. If there are ample cabinets and drawers elsewhere in the kitchen, designers can prioritize adding appliances or expanding the breakfast bar area. If storage is a primary concern, then they may have to sacrifice one of the other kitchen island functions. This issue relates to questions of depth and height as well. Because islands typically involve some combination of cabinets and drawers, designers must accommodate standard cabinet and drawer heights and depths alongside appliances and basic sizing requirements.
Finally, lighting is one of the primary ways in which a kitchen island design can set itself apart aesthetically, as many islands incorporate accent lights such as pendant lights or other statement lighting pieces. Particularly for islands with breakfast bars and cooktops, adequate lighting is essential for users to be able to see their food, whether they are cooking or eating.
These considerations are just some of the many that go into making a kitchen island design stand out. To read more about residential kitchen design or kitchen furniture, check out our articles on How to Correctly Design and Build a Kitchen or Space-Saving Furniture Designs for Efficient Kitchens.
White and gray marbled countertop with a smooth finish for this traditional kitchen.
The countertop is an essential component of the kitchen. It is where all the  action takes place. But more than that, the countertop is the foundation of kitchen décor when doing a kitchen renovation. It bares the burden of setting the tone and feel of the space.
Seeing its importance in kitchen décor, it matters a lot what material, finish and design you choose for your countertop. We have put together the hottest countertop trends for 2021 that will give you ideas for your own kitchen. As you would expect, these trends focus heavily on color and material choices. Spoiler alert: quartz is still king of kitchen countertops.
The island instantly becomes the focal point of the kitchen because of its color and finish.
Quartz was introduced as a high-end alternative to granite, check out our granite vs quartz article.  Granite a natural rock, has for years dominated the countertop scene especially for homeowners who want something strong, durable and good looking. But it has a downside–it is porous. This means that liquids like water, wine, and oils can seep through the surface causing staining. Even worse, it encourages the breeding of dangerous bacteria that could leave your countertop unsanitary.
The porous issue can be resolved by sealing the granite surface with a non-porous sealant. But the sealant wears off with time & wear, so the countertop has to be resealed throughout its lifetime.
Quartz, on the other hand, is non-porous and does not have to go through regular re-sealing. This means it is highly resistant against staining and is one of the most hygienic countertop options for homeowners. Add to that the fact that quartz is extremely strong, making it super durable and you can see why this low maintenance material is not going anywhere soon as the countertop material of choice for many homeowners.
Quartz now comes in many colors, patterns, and finishing techniques that mimic’s the look of natural stone. One of the most current and trending finishes right now is matte. In 2021, Quartz manufacturers will continue to impress us with manufacturing improvements to keep this countertops option king. Not just for this year, but for quite some time to come.
Since we have been experiencing a design movement using more textured and tactile surfaces, why not consider it in marble countertops too. Honed and leather surfaces are the most common and can be applied to many different materials, such as granite, marble, and quartz.  Even though polished is still the most popular, there are advantages to these two others.
Honed finish is a matte finish with little to no shine.  The overall look will vary depending on the stone type, but it should have a low sheen and a smooth surface.  Honed finishes work well with marble, since it’s lack of shine conceals any flaws or scratch marks more readily.
Leathered finish is a newer style of treatment that has become more popular in recent years.  It has a soft sheen, that is less glossy from a polished slab, and to the touch has a different feel.  The leather finish retains the stone’s natural color giving it a more sophisticated look than honed. It also hides fingerprints and water spots remarkable well, which is very appealing to many.
These are just a few finishes to consider when choosing a countertop.
Smooth and silk-like veining brings character and style.
Homeowners are seeking a bit more character in their granite countertops. Thankfully, technology is there to offer creative solutions. Today, countertops come in a wide variety of patterns unlike the plain styles of years past.  Say goodbye to the round particulates of countertops past and hello to realistic veining.
Materials like quartz are being designed to resemble slabs of natural stone, like granite & marble. This involves creating veins in interesting patterns swirled into the countertop slabs. This added boost to your creative personality in your kitchen will wow.  Want something even more realistic; then no need for a polished piece–honed and leathered finishes have the durability needed for the kitchen but have a drastically different look in the space.
These varied finishes make for an interesting matchup with other kitchen elements including the flooring, walls, cabinetry, and backsplash. It also adds a twist to your cooking, creating a nice visual background for the multitude of kitchen activities.
Last year home owners couldn’t get enough of integrated sinks, however, those days are behind us. 2021 is bringing different finishing’s, sizes, and styles to kitchen sinks and we’re super excited about it.This year we’re seeing matte black sinks and sink fixtures as well as gold and brass colors take over. These finishes stray away from your typical silver metal sinks. These are also popular faucet color choices foe 2021 bathroom vanities trends!
Oversized sinks are also gaining popularity this year. This is great in terms of functionality. Oversized sinks pair lovely with an oversized fridge! As the kitchen area continues to expand in area and accessibility, it only makes sense that it’s appliances do as well. Elegant and modern styles of sinks are also coming in hot this year and will be highly sought after. For example, farmhouse sinks, otherwise known as apron front sinks are super trendy. Expect to see all these types of sinks as part of 2021 kitchen countertop trends.
The dark charcoal countertop makes an interesting contrast to the white cabinets.
Bold and dramatic counters, especially dark counters, can easily seem very gothic in certain circumstances and also perfectly harmonious in others.
If you seek to create a statement with your home renovation, bold colored porcelain countertops are a great solution. The style is not merely for contemporary spaces (although black stone or maybe Corian counters certainly look sophisticated and sleek, particularly when combined with sharp white cabinets). A bold and dramatic color also functions well in a conventional kitchen; black marble or granite surfaces put gravitas to rustic wood racks or a colorful tile backsplash. On the other hand, dark counters, whether matte or glossy, will help make your dishes, flowers, and linens pop out.
Backsplashes can be a fun part of the house to decorate as there always seems to be new trends and styles. With all the constant change, who can keep up? We are here to help, with your guide to 2021 backsplash trends and styles.
Basic subways tiles are out! Okay maybe not completely, but if homeowners are using them these days, then they are using larger ones. Or even patterned ones! People are moving on to larger slabs of tiles and tiles with various textures or patterns. The color choices are endless here. It just depends on the other colors you choose in your kitchen and of course personal taste. A pop of color would be very trendy right now and allows you to get more creative with your design. Neutral patterns with natural texture is another option for those looking for a classic look.
Another big change we’re seeing in tile backsplashes are their size and the portion of wall they are covering. Large slabs are taking over. These slabs can be marble, quartz, wood, copper, stainless steel, glass…. the list goes on forever! Regarding wall coverage, backsplashes are rising to the ceiling. With upper cabinets on their way out, homeowners are left with more wall space. When it comes to decorating this space, tile backsplashes are a popular choice.
Best Countertops for Busy Kitchens
Replacing a scratched, scorched, stained, or just plain unattractive countertop can transform any kitchen. Happily, there are lots of options in a wide range of prices. A new laminate countertop can cost as little as $5 per square foot. Or you could easily spend 10 times that on quartz, granite, or recycled glass.
Consumer Reports tested more than a dozen widely used types of quartz countertops to see how well they resisted stains, heat damage, cuts, abrasion, and impact, and found seven that passed muster. Here are the details. In our countertop tests, performance varied from one material to the next, but there was little difference among competing brands of each type, so be sure to shop around for the best deal on your countertop material of choice. For the pros and cons of each type, see the numbered entries below.
1. Quartz Pros: It mimics the look of stone but requires less maintenance. Hot pots, serrated knives, abrasive pads, and most stains were no match for quartz, which is a combination of mineral, color, and resin. It comes in vibrant colors in addition to patterns that look like granite and marble. Cons: Edges and corners can chip, and you’ll need a pro to repair them. Rounded edges help. 2. Granite Pros: Each slab of this natural material is unique; rare colors and veining cost more. Heat, cuts, and scratches didn’t harm granite in our tests. Polished and matte finishes resisted most stains when properly sealed, so pick the look you prefer. Cons: Periodic resealing is needed to fend off stains. Like quartz, edges and corners can chip and must be professionally repaired. 3. Soapstone, Limestone, and Marble Pros: Soapstone isn’t as common as granite, and it’s superb at resisting heat damage. Small scratches can be repaired by sanding finely and applying mineral oil. Limestone (pictured) and marble are classic materials. Limestone also has a natural-stone look without heavy veining or graining, and it resists heat. Cons: Soapstone nicks, cuts, and scratches easily, and some stains are too tough to be washed away. Limestone and marble also have those drawbacks, and heat damaged our marble. 4. Laminate Pros: Inexpensive, easy to install, and so much better-looking than you probably remember, thanks to new printing technology and decorative edges. Stains and heat didn’t damage the laminates we tested. Cons: Cutting directly on it easily and permanently damages laminate, so use a cutting board. 5. Solid Surfacing Pros: Available in a variety of colors and patterns, it can be used for the counters, sink, and backsplash, creating a seamless look because joints are almost invisible. And like quartz, its color won’t vary much from the store sample. Solid surfacing is resistant to most stains, and small nicks and scratches can be repaired. Cons: It scratches and cuts easily, so a cutting board is a must. 6. Recycled Glass Pros: Large shards give it a fun, contemporary look; finely ground glass makes it less busy. Most glass counters we tested resisted stains, cuts, scratches, and heat. Cons: It’s the only material for which we found a difference among brands. Cosentino’s Eco counters were the only ones that developed a thin crack during our heat tests. 7. Butcher Block Pros: It adds warmth and is easy to install and repair, but the finish makes a difference. Varnish improved stain resistance, but penetrating oils diminished it. Cons: Nicks and scratches can easily happen, though they can be sanded out.
