In the early 80s my dad owned a dressy outfit that was a bright yellow suit, referred to as a “banana suit.” I think everyone should just be thankful the costumers went with one of the more subdued 70s/80s formalwear options XD

the weirdest part to me is that a lot of people who hated the show seemed to like Classic Loki just fine--you know, the guy who 100% had the most ridiculous costume. and sure, even show antis are not a monolith, so I don't know if it's the same people giving Classic Loki a pass while fussing about Loki's historically accurate frilly shirt, but it still seems KINDA SILLY

and also yes, it could have been much worse. as I understand it, pink tuxedos were also an option in the 80s. for Loki specifically, a bright yellow or bright green suit kinda would have been more on theme, so yes, I think we should all be thankful.

Loki - season 2, episode 6 series finale -immediate reaction

Okay, so this time I’m gonna have to split this into two posts.  This one is my reaction after just watching the finale, but this time it’s going to be mostly my emotional response, and the more considered post with images will have to wait till later.  I don’t have the heart for it right now.

So yeah, spoilers ahead.

Well that tore out my heart and stamped on it!

I mean it was an utterly perfect story for a character like Loki, but I’m still devastated. I love it. And I hate it.

I love it on a story level.  The whole season was beautifully done! Loki developed so much over the six episodes, and really won my heart back. I fell in love with the gang from the TVA, particularly OB and Mobius, and I warmed to Sylvie and just wanted her to be able to live the quiet life she’s wanted for so long.

I loved that they really went into the depth I had assumed I’d only get in a fic about the different attempts Loki made to fix things by going back in time. They didn’t just gloss over things, they really showed him trying.  I was shocked when after he asked OB how long it would take him to learn everything, he went and spent CENTURIES doing it!  My stomach dropped.  Because can you imagine what that means for someone?  Even someone as long lived as Loki?  What that has to do to your mind? And that should have been the first clue things weren’t going to turn up roses.

Then he finally succeeds! But they don’t show it to us like we’re experiencing that moment, but more as though we’re an observer, rushing through it because it’s yet another repeat. And for one brief moment Loki is happy because he thinks they’ve done it. But no, it turns out to have been an impossible task!

And then he finds out that HWR basically gave him his newfound powers, and that he still had a lot to learn, and then we see THAT HE ALREADY HAD LEARNED! The way they kept dropping the sense of time on us, that sense of dread and urgency. And inevitability. *shivers*

How he tries, and tries, and tries to convince Sylvie, but can’t get through to her, and how he has to contemplate whether he’s the sort of man who could kill her. I loved how he visited Mobius to ask for his advice. My god. What a horrible conversation to have to have.  But what trust he places in Mobius! 

And I loved how he kept refusing to take the easy path. How he decided he couldn’t kill Sylvie, and how he realised there was another way. But OMG at what price!? I can’t….

But I hated how much this hurt Loki, what this took from him.  When the gold from the rock trickles upwards to create a mockery of a throne, which is more a prison… just…. 😭 The look on his face once he knows what he has to do. He had to make the impossible choice, and he chose the impossible.

I love that it kept the tone of tragedy that has haunted Loki all through the MCU.  I love how they were true to his character in that way, but AT THE SAME TIME allowed him to retain his new sense of self, all that growth we’ve shared through this series but also the change that he’s experienced while he’s been isolated during centuries trying to find a way to defeat HWR and keep the people on the branched timelines safe. His desperate act to do the right thing.  And finally it is the right thing in the eyes of the universe and the audience, and yet he still loses. My heart just can’t bear it!

It’s perfect and it hurts.

What type of kittens are you adopting? (I live with someone who has mild cat allergies, and would like to get a cat in a few years if one can be found that doesn’t bother them).

Siberians! I am getting two. They naturally have lower levels of the protein Fel d1, which is the protein primary responsible for cat allergies. I did a lot of research and apparently three out of 4 people with cat allergies do not react to Siberians. On top of this I am getting allergy shots, and I think that will help too. I expect to still have a mild reaction, but I’m prepared for that adjustment period. I have been on a waiting list since July and my litter was born on Christmas eve!

Twelfth Night campus novel au?

...The chaos of it all. Dear god. Does anyone do work? Don’t answer that question. These people must be grad students. Surely no one can actually be keeping up a publishing schedule with all this pining.

Orsino is in fine arts; Olivia is in literature. He pines over her from a different building. She can’t be bothered to pay attention. Maria is her dissertation supervisor. Viola is the newest member of the music department, determined to succeed, overawed by Orsino’s hotness and peer-reviewed article. She’s trying to organize a conference with him; he keeps sending her over to try to get Olivia to join their committee. Andrew Aguecheek has been doing his Ph.D. for over a decade, and no one can figure out why admin hasn’t kicked him out yet. Sebastian is in the history department, and every bit as oblivious to Antonio’s adoration as he seems to be in the play. Antonio’s dissertation is about privateering, and he’s sensitive about it.

Feste, of course, has been teaching in the English department since modernism was cool, and far too long to be anything other than amused by all this.

Have you read any books by Rosemary Sutcliff? She wrote historical fiction (lots about pre-medieval Britain, but with man other settings too) in the second half of the 20th century, and I think you'd enjoy her lack of cynicism and sense of the value of both small and large things and ideas.

!!! Yes!!!! I’ve read black ships before troy and it was deeply formative for me!!!

I’ve never read any of her other works but it sounds like I need to check them out!

Headcanons for how Loki would react to being quarantined?

Good question! I think Loki would do a number of things: 

- He’d read lots of books and learn new spells and practice becoming the most powerful version of himself he can be, until he runs out of resources (assuming this is on Midgard). 

- After he was finished with that, Loki would then start watching a ton of Netflix. He’d get really invested in Queer Eye,  Gordon Ramsay, and Law and Order SVU. 

- Loki would do at-home yoga Youtube videos and spend a lot of time upside down, because he likes the feeling of standing on his hands.

- He’d built a boat-in-a-bottle, learn how to play Solitaire, and get into scrapbooking. He’d be very protective over his sparkly stickers and half the book would be themed around Loki and Thor being BFFs. (Not that Thor can ever know this.)

- Speaking of Thor, though,  there would be lots of time spent projecting his illusion into Thor’s room, “because I’m not technically violating the quarantine, brother.” He’d follow Thor around and ask lots of irritating questions and basically just really get on Thor’s nerves while Thor is trying to exercise by bench-pressing his bed or something. 

- We can pretend that they’re all living at Avengers compound or the tower (why not?) and Loki would definitely do shit like writing love letters to everyone but signing them with each other’s names, so Steve goes around awkwardly thinking Tony is secretly in love with him, while Tony is kind of flattered and likes that Bruce apparently thinks he’s the bee’s knees, and so on.

If you were to write an AU Loki fanfic, what AU would you be most likely to choose?

I don’t know if this counts, but I’m working on a retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac with Loki and Thor.  It’ll still take place in Asgard.

No we haven’t seen any dramas that depict this. There are also like two millennium’s worth of “Chinese emperors” but this kind of statement probably refers to one particular one so unless you know which one it refers to, it’s hard to verify if it’s true or not.

Frigga for the character break-down?

How I feel about this character: I don’t have a lot of feelings about her, actually, other than finding her dynamic with the characters around her fascinating, and being weirdly invested in my elaborate headcanons about her backstory. Because we aren’t actually given a lot of her character in and of itself - more in terms of how she relates to the rest of her family. Though I do find that, and specifically the role she plays in the family dysfunction, very interesting.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: I mean...I guess Odin? I think their relationship has a lot of potential for exploration, especially post-Ragnarok reveals.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: I have a lot of feelings about a relationship between Sif and Frigga, and Frigga mentoring Sif as a young woman and specifically a young warrior. I have all my headcanons about Frigga’s history as a shieldmaiden, and I love thinking about her working with Sif, helping build her strength and confidence.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I don’t know if it’s actually unpopular, but I am of the opinion that while people sometimes portray Frigga as the Good Parent who did nothing wrong, she fucked up too, just in different ways than Odin did. She has her own fault for the dysfunction of the Odinfamily, and I think she escapes that a lot of the time in terms of fandom discussion.

I’ve written about this a few times, but I think the core one is probably that Frigga was most concerned with smoothing over conflict without really addressing the core cause of it. The most important thing was the appearance of unity and tranquility, and that meant smoothing over problems without any inspection of the underlying issues, and in so doing making them (seem) less important or significant than they were.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. Frigga’s fridging was bullshit and I will stand by that. She should’ve survived, at least through to Ragnarok - I would’ve loved to see her face off against Hela. Odin’s dead, Hela’s coming to take over Asgard, and it’s Frigga who is standing in her way. 

If we had to lose her (and I understand, thematically, why all of Thor’s friends had to die), that would’ve been a better way to make that happen, even if other events would’ve been complicated (i.e. everything with Loki).

Still. That’s my thought and I’m sticking with it.

that...is a good point that did not even occur to me, although in my defense 1) shipping prices are usually obnoxious and 2) there’s something special about finding Loki merch in the wild, you know?

and...would you look at that, FYE doesn’t seem to charge more for shipping to Alaska! I think. but they do charge by weight, and the poster kinda looks like it comes in a frame, which might make it not ideal for shipping. can’t hurt to sign up for an account in case they have sales, though.

As someone who also has religious OCD, I've found that knitting or crocheting while the pastor gives a potentially triggering sermon can greatly help with staying calm, and nobody ever seems to mind.

I can’t knit or crochet ;; but I do have a cross-stitching app on my phone. our church services are still being held over conference call for the time being so I have been in the habit of keeping my camera switched off and using that app to distract myself when the topic inevitably strays to c*v*d for the 100th time

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon

My personal head canon is that Loki is quite inexperienced romantically. He’s been with people but it’s very difficult for him to form a romantic connection. By the time the MCU rolls around he’s pretty much given up on it. There’s also a serious disconnect for him between love and sex.
