I realize this may not help people easily understand me but my only job is to find and focus on my gifts while remaining unapologetically myself. Trying to conform has not nor will never work for me. The world will only be as beautiful as it can be when we allow ourselves to be what we are, 1/1. I paint, but I’m not a painter. I’ve shot many photos and told stories via film, but I can’t say I’m a photographer or filmmaker. I have crafted logos and digital works but I’m not a graphic designer. These are all tools I utilize as modes of expression. I was an artist before I ever knew the meaning of the word. ______ The concept for this piece is that of breaking through a barrier, flourishing even in the harshest of conditions. Can you realize the beauty that you are, even when buried in darkness below something that seems impenetrable? Concrete for me is the expectations, standards, and systems of a world that couldn’t understand or appreciate my beauty. Then again, if it’s only in the eye of the beholder then maybe it’s something only I can see. I didn’t belong but I was longing to be. I had to bloom even if it was by myself, for myself, appreciated by only myself. And even though I stood alone, I had to learn, that that was good enough for me.
