Lydia Ko starts another season by making more coach and caddie changes
Tumblr media
Lydia Ko is not afraid to revamp her golf support system completely as she proved last year and again before she starts her 2018 season.
Stop us if you’ve heard this one, but Lydia Ko will kick off her LPGA season with major changes to her entourage.
The former world No. 1, who overhauled her golf squad late in the 2016 campaign, will take the tee on Thursday at the Women’s Australian Open under the tutelage of a new instructor and with yet another caddie on her bag, according to the LPGA.

— Warren Partland (@warren_partland) February 12, 2018
Gone from Team Lydia are Gary Gilchrist, whom swing coach Ted Oh replaces, and bagman Peter Godfrey, removed in favor of Jonny Scott, who has toted the luggage for several LPGA players, including Laura Davies and Karrie Webb.
After last year’s wholesale changes, Ko failed to add to her cache of 14 tour wins for the first time in her professional career as well as when she started competing on tour as 15-year-old. Along the way, she lost her No. 1 world ranking in June, after a run of 104 weeks at the top.
Now 20, the former teen phenom ranks 10th in the Rolex Rankings and has acknowledged that last year was an “emotional roller coaster ride.”
2017 has been a year that have taken me on an up and down emotional roller coaster ride... however when I reflect back on my year now, I think every moment has been an experience to grow from, and a learning curve for me both on and off the golf course. Though some may class my season “disappointing”, but I would say, that my ‘17 season was still full of positives. Cant say enough thank you’s to god, my family, friends, sponsors and fans for being by my side each step of the way ❤️ Going to keep working hard to come back more positive, patient, strong and smiley!!! Thanks 2017, now, Hello 2018 ✌️

Winless since the Marathon Classic in July 2016, Ko also conceded that her self-assurance took a hit last season.
”Confidence is a huge thing,” Ko told The Advertiser recently. “During the middle of last year I felt I lost a bit of confidence.
“Talent-wise it does not change week-in, week-out, it is really confidence and how positive you are,” added Ko, who said she had trained in the U.S. during the past month. “I took time off to regroup and rest physically and mentally.”
Oh is Ko’s fourth coach, taking over from Gilchrist after a year. Gilchrist, who followed New Zealand’s Guy Wilson, Ko’s first coach, had supplanted David Leadbetter at the end of the 2016 season.
Oh, who in 1993 qualified for the U.S. Open at the age of 16, was a high school competitor of Tiger Woods in Southern California. He made six starts on the PGA Tour, the last one in 2000 when he missed the cut at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
Scott will be Ko’s 11th caddie since she turned pro in 2013 (check out the New Zealand Herald’s compilation of those who have looped for the young Kiwi).
The two-time major champion will get back in the swing at 7:44 a.m. local Adelaide time on Thursday off Kooyonga Golf Club’s 10th tee, playing alongside three-time tour winner Katherine Kirk and 2014 Women’s British Open victor Mo Martin.

CME Group Championship: Lydia Ko surges into contention in LPGA season finale
An improbable par on No. 18 helps Lydia Ko grab a share of 2nd place after 18 holes of the LPGA’s season-ending tournament.
Lydia Ko, after following an eagle on the 17th hole in Thursday’s first round of the CME Group Tour Championship with an incredible par save, finds herself in the thick of things at the LPGA’s season-ending tournament.
The former world No. 1 is winless in 2017. But after going 1-under through 12 holes at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla., Ko, who streaked to the finish line with birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 and that eagle-4 on 17, will enter Day 2 in a four-way tie for second, just one shot back of 18-hole co-leaders Sarah Jane Smith and Peiyun Chien.
While the birdies and eagle were certainly impressive, the improbable par at the last could be just what Ko needs to propel herself to a second Tour Championship W and 15th tour victory.

— #RaceToCMEGlobe (@LPGA) November 16, 2017
“I don't think I've made a par like that before,” Ko told reporters about the four she signed for on No. 18 after pulling her approach, hitting her third into a half-plugged lie in a bunker, and holing out from the sand.

“After making eagle on the 17th, you don’t really want to even that up with a double on the last,” Ko added. “Definitely a good back nine to put myself in a good position.”
Ko lost her top spot in June after making a slew of changes to her entourage and entered the tourney ranked eighth in the world. While the 20-year-old former teen phenom is uncharacteristically not among the favorites to take home Player of the Year, the money title, scoring prize, or her third CME Race to the Globe and the $1 million bonus that goes with it, her first win of the season would snap a 15-month stretch without a trophy.
It would also go a long way toward a strong start to the 2018 campaign.
“I just want to finish the season on a high note,” said Ko, who conceded she would be “pretty happy” with a top-10 finish to the year. “It is good to be able to play some solid golf these past few weeks and put myself in better positions going into the weekends and going into the final round.
“I think the more I do that, the confidence kind of builds up,” Ko noted. “If you start making birdies or putts and playing well … that momentum kind of carries on."
