The Avoidable Death of Golf

In the Tiger Woods era, golf was the darling of sports. The man was downright magic to watch, so magic in fact that his best trick was hitting the ball so well and with so much ease that you thought you could do it too. (spoiler alert: you can't, but that doesn't mean golf can't be fun) And so it was that millions flocked to the golf course, to be like Tiger Woods.

With no household names of the caliber of Mr. Woods, golf is in trouble. The game has been drawing increasingly less traffic and interest, and as a result, the trend of years has been that more golf courses are closing than opening. Nike, long a major sponsor of golf and a major source of pay for the aforementioned Mr. Woods shocked the world a couple of years ago in announcing they were discontinuing their line of golf equipment.

It doesn't have to be this way.

If we dig deep into the data it's easy to see the reason:

Marketing

Interest in golf is still high. Top Golf has emerged as a major player in the golf world, and son, their business is booming. New Top Golf facilities are being built around the country and indeed walking into one without having to go on a waiting list is simply not going to happen. It's Elementary my dear, in deducting that there continues to be plenty of interest in the game, and plenty of public entertainment dollars at the ready. So what's up with golf courses and why are they closing?

It's all about presentation.

Top Golf spends a lot of time and money thinking about how they want to be perceived. They produce slick videos and pepper their website, signage, and in house decorating with quality photographs. Contrast this with your standard golf course, and you'll see either cookie cutter websites with middling or worse photography, or websites that do little to convey the fun and excitement of getting out to an actual golf course. Perception is everything in this modern age of hyper tactile consumers who demand to be catered to before they arrive with a dynamite presentation of what they can expect when they arrive.

Most golf courses buy a package from a point of sale company who manages their tee times and sales, and these companies throw in cookie cutter websites to go along with it. The golf course uploads their own photos. This is the easy way, but the wrong way.

Today's golf courses are totally missing the mark with poor photography and awful videos in which they fly drones straight down a fairway with zero cinematic maneuvers on default auto color settings. Half the time they don't even bother to correct for the crooked horizon line. I've seen golf courses that charge (or want to charge) a decent amount of coin and present their potential golfers with photos that look like they were taken with a cell phone.

I'm not saying all this to be mean. I love golf. I say this out of pure love because I believe that people would like to turn that Top Golf interest into an actual round of golf every once in a while and then they go in search of a place to do that and find nothing but vom cakes as websites with chunks as photos and videos.

Golf doesn't have to be contracting, but it will continue to do so until these golf courses get a better grasp on modern marketing. Simply hanging a shingle outside that says you're open just isn't good enough anymore. And we're here to help.
