Dark city (digging through the archive)

The city slowly descended into darkness, night lights turning on, traffic not even noticing darkness fell. One afternoon in March 2015, from the window of my office at the time.

Taken with Panasonic Lumix GF1 digital mirrorless camera, with Panasonic Lumix G 20mm F1.7 pancake lens, wide open.

The combination of this camera and this lens is a match made in heaven - small, sharp, and fast.

Topaz Labs newest AI upscaling software Topaz Photo AI tool is a big step up from the previous Gigapixel AI tool

i have been in a few discussions especially surrounding AI art which often maxes out as low as 1024pixels about how to achieve higher resolution output for larger or immersive displays & printing

this AI ‘painting’ was a finalist for Claire Silvers most recent AI contest and i upscaled the entire nft collection it is a part of, so i thought to use it as an example of how hi res AI art can be now

Review of my own camera system  -Section 2- LUMIX M4/3 system

先般、4/3システムの旗振り役だったオリンパスがカメラ部門の売却を発表した。私が初めて手にしたデジタル一眼レフカメラはオリンパス4/3システムであり、その設計思想には共感するものがあった。大好きなシステムであり、今もなおLUMIXのM4/3のシステムを愛用している。

ライカ版フィルムカメラと同様に、現実的に持ち出せるサイズのレンズを作ろとすれば、4/3程度のセンサーにすべきという設計思想は理に叶っており、素晴らしく光学性能の高いレンズも多くあった。しかしデジタル処理によって歪みや収差の補正ができるようになると、小さなサイズの高性能レンズが作られるようになり、レンズの小型化のためだけにM4/3の小さなセンサーにこだわる理由が無くなってきた。上位からはフルサイズミラーレス一眼カメラ、下方からはスマートフォンカメラにそのマーケットシェアをどんどん奪われてしまう構図となっている。

オリンパスの失敗は、単価の高いプロ向け商品に頼ろうとしすぎた事だと思っている。プロ向けのM4/3カメラはフルサイズミラーレスカメラとそのサイズ感は変わらない。一方コンシューマ向けのM4/3のカメラは、APS-Cのミラーレスカメラより大きいものまである。すっかり立ち位置が無くなってしまった様である。しかし古今東西、レンズ交換可能な小型カメラを好むユーザーは必ずいるので、センサーの小ささを生かし、とことん小型化に拘った開発をすべきだったのではないかと思う。

色々なカメラやレンズを使ってきたが、現在手元に残るものは次に示した1つのカメラと3つのレンズのみ。いずれも高額なものではないが、十二分に満足できる絵を吐き出してくれる。

＜GM1＞

デジタル1眼カメラで世界最小のカメラであり、未だその記録は破られていない。はずである。（笑）手中に収まるほどの小さいカメラは、持っていて全くストレスがないので、なんだかんだ持ち出すし、一番長く使っているカメラである。今時のスペックと比べるとかなり見劣りはするが、私の用途では機能的に何ら不足はない。唯一無二のデザインと作りの良さは持つだけでも満足感があり、今となっては貴重なカメラである。

初めて手に入れたM4/3システム、LUMIX G1にキットレンズとして付いていたもの。明るいレンズではないが、コストパフォーマンスの極めて高い素晴らしい写りをするレンズである。後述するFUJIFILMのキットレンズもそうであるが、キットレンズはメーカーが新しいカメラを発売する際、高性能かつお手頃価格でシェア獲得を狙う商品なので、「安かろう悪かろうのレンズではない」ということに今更ながら気づいている。明るいレンズと比べれば撮るシーンは限られてくるが、高感度に強いデジタルカメラであれば、使う上での支障は少ない。焦点距離も35mm版換算28mm〜90mmなので、これ一本あればたいていのシーンを賄うことができる。

＜LUMIX G 20mm / F1.7 ASPH＞

M4/3ユーザーの間ではLEICA DG SUMMILUX 25mm / F1.4と並び、神レンズと言われている。無論25mmも所有していたが、個人的には25mmより寄れて、サイズが小さく、安く手に入れることができるこちらのレンズこそが「神レンズ」だと思っている。実は最初のM4/3カメラG1を購入したのも、近日中に明るい単焦点レンズ（本レンズ）が発表されると知ったからであった。ボケも十分綺麗でポートレイトに使っても遜色はない。

＜LUMIX G VARIO 12-32mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S＞

手持ちの最後のM4/3カメラGM1のキットレンズである。とても小さく軽いのに、広角12mmからのズームレンズで、ワイド側もテレ側も、このサイズと価格からは想像できない素晴らしい写りのレンズである。旅に出る時、荷物になるからカメラは止めようかなぁと思う時でも、GM1にこのズームレンズをつけて持ち出したことは数知れず。どうんなに高級なカメラやレンズを持っていたって、持ち出すのに躊躇していては持っている意味がない。カメラは持ち出せてナンボである。
