#lukanette fan zine
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I think about the day I came out with the crazy idea of a zine, I was searching on Tumblr for Lukanette content as the shipper I am.
I was wondering "Maybe someone has already made a zine about the babies, I really hope so!" then I started searching.
I found zines for many ships or AUs but nothing, really nothing for Lukanette. At first I was surprised.
How could it be no one thought about it?
Then I remembered I could ask to people who know better than me for fans material of the ship.
But they also didn't know about the existence of a Lukanette zine.
So I took some courage and ask them again if they would like to work and create one all together.
Surprisingly, some of them said Yes.
Me and other two girls, the best partners in crime I could find for this project, then started to search for others to join and it was so beautiful to receive so many applications, beautiful and difficult to choose just some of them in the end.
We got such a great team of artists and writers from all over the world, and I wanna thank all of them that stayed till the end and worked so hard to help us make this dream possible.
I also wanna thank my fellow admins that believe in this dream and help in so many ways to make it real, to make it possibile, you guys are incredible.
And lastly but not last, I wanna thank You for support, follow and spread this project.
Thank you for the patience, thank you for the love.
Thank you for the melody you helped creating with us all.
Joy

Exaltation literally revived me. I am literally sitting in front of my computer, furiously writing. I’ll be damned if I don’t have at least 90% of this chapter done!

“Yes!” Ladybug punched the air. “We still have ten minutes left!”
Chat Noir landed behind her, barely catching his breath.
“We missed a whole block back there,” he panted.
“We did?”
“Uuugh, we need to go back.” Chat Noir threw his head back as he said it. “I don’t wanna.”
“Wait!” Ladybug had grabbed his tail, right as he had turned around to take a running jump.
Chat Noir looked over his shoulder, giving her a stare that sent goosebumps down her spine. She bit her lip, trying to think of a justification for her decision, but couldn’t find one.
“Let’s stay,” Ladybug resolved to say. The truth was easier anyway. “I don’t care right now. Paris will survive one night we don’t do a full sweep of the city. I wanna rest. With you.”
Chapter 6 of Rattled is up. Check out my contribution for the @mlbigbang, updated every Saturday.

I have so many questions about the trailer. Like, is Master Fu DEAD? Did she just find the earrings on the FLOOR? Why does the yoyo have a mind of its own? How does it fly? Did they just break a centuries old window?

Wedding Magic
No one said seeing Luka in a well-tailored tux would make life—and a confession—so much harder than it already was. But alas, there Marinette was, doing her best to not drool on her own sparkly Maid of Honor dress. Just as she let out another wistful sigh, said man tucked a stray hair behind his ear.
Oh yeah, because the handsome suit wasn’t enough, he also had his hair slicked back. For the first time in his life, according to Juleka.
The sigh turned into a noise more akin to a whimper. When did Luka become so handsome? How long had she been away for? How long had she been fantasizing with confessing her feelings for him, that he suddenly seemed ten times more attractive?
“You’re doing it again,” a voice sang next to her.
“I can’t help it,” Marinette whined, turning to Rose. “I’ve never seen him like this before. He looks so good. And the way he’s laughing…” Her eyes turned soft. “I’ve never seen him so happy.”
“He better be,” Rose laughed. “He would be a terrible Best Man if he wasn’t happy for his own sister.”
“That would make him a terrible brother,” Marinette agreed, gaze still locked on those irresistible silky strands that made her want to brush her fingers through it.
“Marinetteeee,” Rose sang again.
The lovestruck woman whimpered once more. “I need a distraction. Yup, that’s what I need.”
Marinette pushed her way through the crowd until finding a waiter carrying glasses of wine. She grabbed one and made a round around the room, stopping to chit-chat with several old classmates.
But in less than ten minutes, she was already back merely three meters away from the Best Man. She watched for a moment, as Luka laughed at something Mylne had said. Marinette let out a resigned sigh, ready to give up and leave it for another time. Yet, just as she was turning, Mylène left her spot, leaving Luka on his own.
This was it. It was the perfect moment. Marinette stood straight, squaring her shoulders, chin up high. A deep breath filled her lungs, giving her the needed confidence to take large strides to him.
“Luka, I—”
Marinette slipped on the skirt of a table, tripping her enough to spill some of her wine on the very man she was calling. Her eyes almost shot out of her eyes, as the shirt and vest of the gorgeous suit became tainted in plum.
“Marinette, are you okay?” Luka asked, his hands holding her elbows.
“Your suit,” she breathed.
“My suit is fine,” he insisted, attempting to catch her gaze, which was focused on his chest. “I’m more worried about you. Do you need anything?”
“I-I…” Marinette sighed in resignation, all confidence gone. “I’m fine. Let me help you with that.”
She lightly pulled on his arm to lead him to the doors next to the bar, into the kitchen. Once inside, Marinette sought out the first aid kit her parents always took to events they catered. Something they had learned to do after one too many accidents that ended with several scrapes on Marinette’s knees.
“I’m not hurt,” Luka said, brows furrowed.
“It’s for the shirt,” Marinette clarified. “I can mix this with dish soap to clean it up.”
She took out a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, along with a teacup, a spoon, and the soap. As she did a small chemistry experiment, her eyes remained focused, refusing to look at the object of her current embarrassment.
“Marinette,” Luka said quietly, lightly touching the hand that was furiously mixing the ingredients, making it stop. “I know I never ask you to tell me what’s wrong, but I can’t help but feel this is about me.”
Her lips pressed together. How is he always so perceptive, she thought. Shoulders slumping, Marinette let go of the spoon.
“I was gonna talk to you about something. But I lost my nerve,” she admitted. “And now I can’t find it again.” The hand that was on the spoon moved to pick up a cloth napkin instead, and dip it in the mixture. “This should help with the shirt.”
When Marinette was about to start scrubbing away the stain, Luka’s hand was back on hers, this time with more strength. As she looked up, she was startled to see how close he was. So close, she could make out the light pink color on his cheeks.
“You know you can trust me with anything, right?” he said, with a husky voice she had never heard come from him.

My #1 post of 2022
You know what the craziest part of Elation is? Suddenly, a whole lot of the people I have been following for years, who had moved on to other fandoms, suddenly just showed back up. Screaming Marichat at the top of their lungs.

THEY ARE SO BEAUTIFUL
I'm sorry but I don't know what fanzine means?
THEY ARE!!!
The LUKANETTE ZINE is SO BEAUTIFUL I regret not buying the most expensive set now ;v; (that enamel pin!!!!) Oh well...
Fanzine comes from: fan + magazine. It's a book/magazine with content created by fans and focused on a ship/character/series, etc. in this case is both art and writing, and it about Lukanette.
There's more ML fanzines, such as LS ones and recently the results for the Luka zine content participants were posted. (I'm excited, can you tell XD)
Fanzines are WONDERFUL, specially when the show won't deliver and there's such amazing talent in this fandom 💙

My Top 10 Posts Ever
I’m @gemshine and I’ve been posting art on Tumblr for five years. Over those five years, I’ve had ten posts gain over 100 notes. Here I will talk about each one of them, their story, and how I think they got popular. If you like any of them you can click the link to take you to the original post, I really appreciate likes and reblogs. If you want to see more of my art please follow @gemshine.
1). How to Make a Comic Infographic - 237 notes - Mar 27 2020
Tumblr media
This is my most popular post. It is a how-to infographic I did for class and I am really proud of it. Comics are really hard to complete, there are so many steps that without organization it is easy to get lost and give up. So, I thought letting others into my thought process would help.
I haven't made that many comics, but I do love making them. I love storytelling and character development so much, so as a visual artist comics are an amazingly creative medium for me to play around with and tell my story. Here is my short story about an elf lawyer named Cherry Elliott I made in 2018 for another class, that made me fall in love with comic making. I dream of writing and illustrating a graphic novel one day.
This was my first time doing the equivalent of a colour palette challenge, I think it turned out pretty well, I love the colour combo of pink, purple, and yellow/orange. The comic I used as the example was a comic made specifically for this infographic, featuring my original character, Mystic. I’m the person in the bottom right, illustrating a comic about “Some Elf Thing”, aka my original story passion project @mysticsrealm. My Mystic’s Realm stuff has not gained much traction yet, so it’s pretty wild that a post with an illustration of myself and my oc has gotten 237 notes and been reblogged 68 times.
Most people finding this post are going through some sort of “comic reference” related tag and I’m glad my experience is actually helping people start making comics. The majority of people tag it with “comic tutorial” or “reference”.
TLDR; this post is helpful for people looking to start making comics and it’s very aesthetic
2). Dad Hank Comic From Detroit Become Human - 205 notes - Aug 21 2018
Tumblr media
At the time this post felt like it was blowing up by my standards. It is still my number two post. It gained traction because I posted it in a big fandom at the right time (#connorarmy). If I posted it now it would have maybe 20 notes. A lot of getting notes is posting at the right time of a fandom, but I don’t really know the science.
This post is nice and simple, I like the purple wash. I like Hank’s expression. These two and their dog are a really sweet little family and I cashed in on that angst, like I am one to do. At least it was kinda wholesome angst, I guess. We love found family.
3). Ladynoir!Opal Comic From Miraculous Ladybug and Steven Universe - 188 notes - Feb 26 2019
Tumblr media
I was and still am really proud of this one. I was inspired to try lineless by @sneakysscribs‘ lineless art. Lineless art is a pain, but so pretty. This piece was made by having lines, but then colouring them in. I love how I was pushing the comic format, making the two gems flying in the beginning and Ladynoir!opal really pop out of the page. I also love that I actually made backgrounds for once in my life, they’re SU inspired and very aesthetic.
I call this AU Miraculous Universe, and it has been in my head a long time, starring Ladybug!Pearl and Chat Noir!Amethyst. It is not very fleshed out, but it is very fun. It also makes no sense. This concept is so oddly specific it’s hilarious. But I’m also rewarded in my uniqueness in that there’s nothing else like it and I got to work both the SU and ML tags.
4). Adrinino Dancing Comic From Miraculous Ladybug - 177 notes - Aug 15 2019
Tumblr media
I just noticed my top 4 all had to do with comics. Hopefully, that’s a good omen for my future in graphic novel.
This piece was for the first and only (so far) zine I’ve been in, @theninozine. That is where the majority of people found this post. It was nice to create something knowing that people were going to see it. It was also nice to have my work displayed among so many talented and passionate artists. Drawing ships for ml is funny because to have to tag the same exact ship four times to account for their love square. Anyways this piece is very sweet and gay.
5). Viperinoire From Miraculous Ladybug - 166 notes - May 7 2020
Tumblr media
This is my most recent post above 100 notes. And it was posted during the ML offseason. I’m not that big of a fan of the show, but I love the fan content a lot. We lot just kinda take elements from canon and do whatever we want with them. This Viperinoire post is a great example steering far from canon.
This post succeeded despite the last episode of Miraculous aired having been in Dec 2019 because of the active Lukanette fanbase. I have a theory that the reason ML is still so popular on the internet, despite a large crowd being disappointed with the show, is because the fan content gets a ton of interaction, encouraging creators to keep making more, keeping the fandom alive.
6). Christine Canigula From Be More Chill - 141 notes - Feb 4 2018
Tumblr media
This was my second post to gain over 100 notes. I posted when the Be More Chill fandom was very popular. People were really nice in the notes, they really love ChristiiIIIIIIiine. In this post I was practicing posing and using a glowy tutorial I found for the stage lights. This is the scene during More Than Survive where she is lifted up and signs the sign-up sheet for the after school play. When I look at this piece I can see the progress I made to get that point, and how I’ve grown since.
7). Heather Chandler From Heathers The Musical - 120 notes - Feb 19 2017
Tumblr media
This was my first post ever to get over 100 notes. I still think it’s pretty good actually, I really like the hair. This post was copied directly from a photo, which I think is pretty good practice for shading. During this time, I didn’t have a drawing tablet so I was posting traditional drawings. This post blew up over all the ones before it because it was at a good time in the Heather fandom and it looks pretty great tbh.
8). Green Diamond From Steven Universe - 108 notes - Aug 15 2018
Tumblr media
Someone asked me to imagine two diamonds fused so I did. I think I did a pretty good job combining the aesthetics of Blue and Yellow to create a new gem with their own identity. This post got popular because of Bellow shippers. One thing I would change is that underneath her left arm you can see a little looseness of her top, I would have changed that to be form fitting to match with the SU style of drawing gems.
9). The Zen Garden From Detroit Become Human - 103 notes - Aug 27 2018
Tumblr media
This is one of the only times I’ve ever practiced drawing a background. Came out pretty picturesque if I do say so myself. The Zen Garden from DBH has always been very pretty. This was really just an exercise for me to come out of my comfort zone and draw a place instead of a person. Actually, at first, it started as a background for [this post], but the background came out nicer than the subject, so I posted it on its own too.
10). Pearls From Steven Universe - 100 notes - Aug 14 2019
Tumblr media
This post just got 100 notes, which lead me to making this post. I think I captured the SU art style for Pearl quite well. When I was younger I found a tutorial for how to draw Pearl and she became my go-to doodle. This post was made years later, but I definitely used the muscle memory I had for drawing Pearl. Though the Pearl I drew was in her bow outfit, this was my first time drawing Pearl in either of these outfits. This post was made before the SU movie a pretty good prediction might I say. I love Pearl a lot.
Thank you, everyone, so much for supporting my work, and may there be lots more in the future.

Tagged by @platypanthewriter
Author name: Tbehartoo. That’s pretty much my online name everywhere XD
Fandoms I write for: I’ve written for Fairy Tail, Miraculous Ladybug, and a crossover with Voltron: Legendary Defenders and Ouran High School Host Club. Mostly ML lately though. Wait, I forgot about a Stranger Things story I wrote for @platypan. Oh, and the Supernatural fic that I coauthored with my niece, but I don’t know if that counts as one of my fandoms I write for.
Where I post:  Usually Tumblr and AO3, but occasionally I’ll update FFN as well.
Most popular one-shot: According to AO3 The one-shot with the most kudos is Fading Ink, a Lukanette story.
Favorite story I wrote: That’s really hard for me to narrow down. I really like the stories that I write for someone, especially if they tell me they loved it after I’ve gifted it to them.
My favorite right now has got to be What the SHELL?! It’s a story I recently posted where a couple of ML characters are using Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (TMNT) quotes in their conversation. It’s my favorite for two reasons: 1) it was prompted by a list of TMNT quotes someone wanted to see done in ML, and 2) My niece has absolutely adored TMNT for at least half of her sixteen years of existence. When I got her to read the story, she absolutely squeed in delight and even hugged my arm (I was driving)- and THAT’S the kind of reaction I was hoping to see her have. It was very rewarding.
Story I was nervous to post:  Which story have I NOT been nervous to post? Well the first fan fic I ever wrote (Nap Time) would probably be the one I was most nervous to post. Or maybe it’s the Stranger Things one-shot I wrote for Platy and have never posted anywhere? Or several of the WIP’s I have sitting around in various stages….
How do I choose titles:  Honestly, I love a good pun but I’m also a sucker for alliteration as well.
Do you outline? Yes. I have to. My brain likes to switch from story to story so i need an outline just to remember where the thing is headed. Do I stick to my outline? Uh, next question.
Complete:  AO3 says I have 70 works, but it’s counting the crossover twice. Of those works only 8 are marked incomplete, and a couple of those are ones I’m probably never going to get back to. View the list here
In progress:  Are we talking posted, but not finished or the massive stack of WIP’s on my My Drive?
Of the posted, not finished: Black Plague is the one I’m trying to work on since I’m not participating in any particular writing challenges or exchanges right now.
Um, let me eeny, meeny, miney, moe a couple of projects here- Well there’s the prequels to Raining Chats and Chiens, a story for the Kitty Love Zine, a MariChat zine that raised money for an animal charity and is coming out with a Volume 2 pretty soon. I’m so excited to see what’s next! And there are 3 of those. Or the  Ladybug crossed with How to Train Your Dragon birthday story that might have to be for someone’s Next birthday. Or the Beauty and the Beast AU where Belle’s dad makes it to the fair, Belle moves away, and we see what happens with Gaston and LeFou. [But that one feels like it’s really still just a fuller outline right now. I need to hone my writing skills far better before I can do it justice.]
Do you take prompts? I love to be given prompts! It’s even better if I have a deadline to work to though. Some of my WIPs are prompts that are very, very old.
Upcoming project I’m most excited about: I started an original story I’m titling “Static” at the moment. Right now I’m just world building-which is as far as it may ever get, but that’s kind of the fun part for me. I’m also really excited to be working on finishing Black Plague.
Tagging but you are under no obligations to participate: @sassyhazelowl @galahadwilder @freedom-shamrock @alienducky @marichat4lyf @dragonshost

“You know you can trust me with anything, right?” he said, with a husky voice she had never heard come from him.
Marinette gulped. “Y-Yes,” she stammered. “It was just, you know—I mean, well… I-I, um, it was stupid, don’t worry about it.”
“Nothing you need to say to me will ever be stupid,” Luka proclaimed, still in that tone that was making Marinette melt.
“You sound different,” she blurted out.
“Oh.” Luka slightly pulled back. “Do you… not like it?”
Marinette shook her head, until realizing how it could be misinterpreted. “I mean, no, I don’t dislike it! Like, you don’t sound bad, just different. But hot different—I MEAN GOOD DIFFERENT! I didn’t mean, like… Oh gosh.”
A snort escaped Luka’s lips, which made him quickly slap a hand to his mouth. “It’s okay!” he rushed to say. “Um, thanks.” His face sobered almost instantly, focusing on her irises. “Marinette, would you allow me to try something?”
“What?”
Softly, he tucked a stray hair behind her ear, making her heart quicken. Already sensing what was very possible to happen next.
“Stop me, if it’s not okay,” he said, in that tone that made Marinette weak in the knees.
Luka slowly leaned down, until his lips touched hers. It was a shy touch, unsure, but hopeful. The tension that had been building up on Marinette’s shoulders suddenly vanished, making way for sweet bliss. She pressed closer to him, turning the kiss from something chaste to a declaration of the feelings she hadn’t had the courage to speak.
Her fingers slid up to that hair she had been itching to touch, carefully brushing through it, as a hand slithered to her back, pulling her closer to him. Marinette could almost swear she could hear his heartbeat. Or maybe it was her own. She wasn’t sure.
One thing she was sure of: This was real.
Luka slowly pulled away, softly connecting his gaze to her own. Marinette sucked in air she desperately needed, yet focused on the bright blue color of his eyes.
“Did that have anything to do with what you wanted to tell me?” he asked, almost teasingly.
“Maybe,” Marinette breathed. “I may have had some more to say.”
The words brought a smile to both, as they simultaneously dove in for another kiss.
* * *
“Have you seen Luka?” Juleka asked Rose. “I haven’t seen him for almost thirty minutes.”
“You know, I haven’t seen him in a while,” Rose responded, tapping her chin as she looked around. “I could’ve sworn I saw him earlier by—Oh! There he is!”
She pointed with her head towards a frazzled looking Luka, struggling to keep his hair pushed back. Walking next to him was Marinette, with her lipstick slightly smudged. In fact, after taking a closer look at Luka…
“Where have you been?!” Rose fake scolded them, as Juleka started connecting the dots. “My wife, your sister, has been going nuts looking for you!”
Luka coughed. “Ah, sorry,” he said, as he straightened his tie. “Had a small incident—”
“It’s a hundred percent my fault,” Marinette intervened. “You know me, clumsy as always, ended up drenching Luka with my drink. So, I was cleaning it.”
Juleka frowned. “Were you really?” she said, squinting at the very noticeable plum stain on Luka’s shirt. “I’ve never seen you leave as much as a dot on the clothes you clean.”
Both Marinette and Luka stared at the large stain, and almost simultaneously looked away, faces turning red.
“I forgot,” Marinette said under her breath.
“It didn’t even occur to me,” Luka said at the same time.
Dots connected.
“Well,” Rose sighed, “it’s a good thing we took all the pictures we wanted, because it would have been such a bummer if you appeared in them drenched in… wine, is it?”
“I think it was liquid courage for Marinette,” Juleka snorted.
“Jules,” Luka whined, as the woman he had probably just made out with covered her face.
Rose let out an excited gasp. “OH MY GOSH, MARINETTE, YOU DID IT!”
“Rose!” it was Marinette’s turn to whine.
Juleka chuckled, as Marinette and Luka sputtered about how they had finally, after so many years, admitted their feelings to each other. It seemed that Juleka and Rose’s plan had worked like a charm, having both the Best Man and Maid of Honor look drop-dead gorgeous. Enough wedding magic to make them want to create a magical moment for themselves.

Miraculous Ladybug Writer Zine: Once Upon a Season
Yes, yes, this is suuuuper late. But I still want to share it. This is a Lukanette fic I wrote for the @mlwriterzine last year. For this zine, I had the honor of being one of its mods, same as one of its writers. This one was especially special to me, because it’s a zine fully dedicated to writers, which is extremely rare, and the final result was astonishing. Huge thanks to @emzurl for making it possible.
The Start of a Song
“I can’t believe we’re here!” Rose squealed, watching the crowds enter past the security fences. “I’ve never been so close to the stage!”
“I know,” Juleka responded in her low, raspy voice. “Totally rad.”
Rose let out another squeal, grabbing her girlfriend’s hand and dragging her inside. Although there were plenty of bands playing during the Summer Music Festival, there was no artist more exciting than Jagged Stone. To which Kitty Section got tickets for in advance.
“Don’t go too far!” Luka called out, but the two girls were already out of earshot. He sighed, as a hand landed on his arm.
“I’ll help keep an eye for them,” Marinette said next to him.
“Don’t worry, we’ll keep an eye out, too,” Mylène said, coming up the other side with Ivan. “I think it’s a little late to be right in front of the stage.”
“We’ll still be pretty close,” Marinette shrugged. “C’mon, we should get close before it fills up!”
A hand wrapped around Luka’s wrist, as she dragged him towards the crowd. Meanwhile, Luka looked at their surroundings, and couldn’t help but notice something.
“Is it just me, or are there a lot of couples in this concert?” Marinette said nervously next to him.
“Huh, I hadn’t noticed,” Luka responded, as nonchalantly as possible, pretending he hadn’t just noticed the exact same thing. “I do see a lot of people, though. Anyone of us could easily get lost. Speaking of …”
He craned his neck in search of his sister, luckily finding her mere meters away. For the third time that day he reminded himself to not get too distracted by the girl still holding his wrist. As grateful as he was that the other two couples encouraged a romantic relationship between them, Luka would never want to put Marinette in an uncomfortable situation. Especially when he still didn’t know where she stood on that notion.
Instead, he tried his best to make sure his sister didn’t wander off, like he heavily suspected she would try.
“Are you okay?” Marinette asked.
“Yeah,” he said. “Just making sure nobody gets lost.”
“That’s gonna be hard, Ivan and Mylène already said they’re going to the movies after this.”
Luka frowned, turning to her. “When did they decide that?”
“They told me just before you and Juleka arrived. They didn’t tell you?”
“Uh, no.”
It’s a setup, Luka instantly thought. It wouldn’t be the first time they tried leaving them alone in hopes that something would happen. However, he knew better. As much as he wished something would happen, at this point, he was starting to lose hope.
The music started, and the crowd screamed. While everyone else was concentrating on the stage, Luka couldn’t help but divert his eyes to Marinette, with her arms raised as she cheered. A smile curved his lips as the image of happiness brought joy to him. With one last wistful sigh, he turned to the stage and started cheering himself.
Jagged Stone walked into the stage, joining his bandmates with a guitar solo. The screams were louder, and the crowd started pushing to the front, every fan hoping to be closer to the rockstar. Luka tried looking at Juleka’s way again, but his vision was cut by several screaming fans.
An elbow hit his back. He turned just in time to watch a large, tall man about to push Marinette out of the way. On instinct, he grabbed her by the shoulder.
“Wah!” Marinette squawked, as she was pulled into Luka’s chest.
“Sorry,” he said, with an apologetic grin. “I figured you’d prefer being pulled than pushed towards me by that guy.”
Marinette glanced at the man now standing where she had been two seconds before.
“Oh,” she breathed, her cheeks acquiring a light shade of pink. “Thanks, Luka.”
A light caress down his chest sent shivers up his spine. Luka swallowed a large gulp before grabbing her shoulders again and turning her in the direction of the stage.
“Wouldn’t want you to miss the show,” he said.
Marinette’s attention was quickly diverted to Jagged Stone, while Luka attempted to get his cool back. While he had never been secretive about his feelings for her, something about this day felt different to him. He shook his head, in an attempt to send away the thought. He had already learned keeping hopes too high could lead to unnecessary disappointment.
And yet, he couldn’t stop looking at her.
Luka continued looking at Marinette on her toes, craning her neck as far as she could above the heads in the crowd. As amusing as it was, the young man couldn’t help but feel bad. He tapped her shoulder, catching her attention, and made a gesture of holding something over his shoulders.
“Are you sure?” Marinette asked.
“I can take it,” Luka shrugged, kneeling down. “Come on, you’ll see better.”
Although she hesitated for a moment, she quickly agreed when the crowd cheered over something she didn’t get to see. As Luka rose back to his feet, he stumbled momentarily, prompting a squawk from Marinette while she wrapped her arms around his head. Luka couldn’t help but laugh, almost losing his balance again.
“I’m gonna fall!” Marinette cried dramatically.
“I got you,” Luka assured, holding tight to her legs. “See, you’re okay. Everything’s okay.”
The young woman’s arms relaxed as she let out a sigh of relief. After several minutes, Marinette seemed to have forgotten her previous fear and gained comfort from her position on his shoulders. Unfortunately for Luka, the part of him that was not internally giddy for being so close to the girl of his dreams was regretting his decision.
Thick droplets of sweat started running down his forehead and back with the added weight, plus the scorching summer heat. Yet, he was resolute in keeping his stance. The concert was only one hour, after all.
* * *
The crowd let out its last scream as the lights turned on around them, signaling the end of the concert. Although Luka had gotten used to the weight already, it didn’t stop him from almost letting out a whine of relief when Marinette was back on the ground.
“That was awesome!” she squealed, as she made a twirl to look at him. “I’ve never had such an awesome view to—Woah, Luka, are you okay?”
“Yeah, why?” he panted.
“You’re sweating like crazy.”
Luka swiped a hand over his forehead. “Huh, look at that.” He pulled his hair back, in hopes to refresh his forehead. “Nothing a cold drink won’t fix. Right, Marinette? Marinette?”
She seemed to not hear him, her eyes trained on something above his eyes.
“Marinette?” he called again, loud enough to catch her attention.
“Ah! Sorry!” she squeaked. “Yeah, you’re hot—I mean, it’s hot! It’s very hot, something cold sounds great. Yeah, totally. We probably gotta move, where are the others?” Marinette asked, scanning the crowd.
“Dunno,” Luka muttered, searching for his phone. On the screen appeared a text message from his sister. In it, he read:
Juleka:
Sorry, we lost you in the crowd. Gonna go for some ice cream with Rose. Thank me later! ;)
He gulped. “They left already.”
“Without us?”
“They went on their own date, I guess.”
“O-Oh,” Marinette stammered. “I see … So, what are you going to do?”
“I—” He had been about to say he was going home. But it still felt much too early to do so. And he didn’t feel like spending the rest of the afternoon alone. “I think I will go for a walk.”
“Ah, I see.”
There was silence. Probably caused by Marinette’s usual indecision about saying what she wanted. Something Luka could already sense and decided to do the work for her.
“Marinette, would you like—”
“Can I join you?” she asked at the same time as him.
Luka blinked, this being the first time she barely hesitated to take the initiative with him. With a soft smile, he responded: “I would very much like that.”
* * *
After several hours and one stop for iced coffee, Luka and Marinette were walking by the edge of the Seine, lost in a melody of joyous laughter.
“Wait, you didn’t!” Luka exclaimed.
“I swear I was the only one who saw it,” Marinette laughed.
“And here I thought I was so sneaky, too.”
“Well, to be fair, I did make the costumes. I think it’s a given I would notice when there’s a piece missing.”
“It’s a good thing that show was not recorded,” Luka chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Wouldn’t want us going viral over a wardrobe malfunction instead of the music.”
“I don’t think it would’ve been so bad if it had,” Marinette responded in a sing-song tone. “Even if that had happened, it could’ve helped boost your popularity as a band. Especially with such a cute guitarist.”
Luka’s eyes widened, dead staring at her. Marinette seemed to have noticed what she said one second too late, for her cheeks turned dark red instantly. Lips pressed together, as if trying to stop them from saying something else they were forbidden from. Luka did his best to still his heart, pushing all hope aside. Just in case.
“Thank you?” he said, attempting to sound as cool as possible. And slightly failing.
“U-uh, you’re welcome?” Marinette said, just as awkwardly. “I-I mean, not that that’s all I think of you. You’re than more such—I mean, you’re so much more than that. You’re a great friend. Notthatyoucanonlybeafriend. I mean.” She took a deep breath. “I meant to say that you’re a great guy, more than looks.”
“That means a lot coming from you, Marinette,” Luka chuckled. “You don’t have to try to fix what you say with me. I know what you mean.”
“See what I mean?!” Marinette burst. “With you, I don’t have to try to explain myself. You just … You just get me! It’s so comfortable with you. And nice. And wonderful. And…”
She went silent. Again, holding back. Despite the words already spoken.
Luka placed his hands in his pockets. “You know,” he said, with a light smile, “anything you want to say, you can say it. No matter what it is, you know I’ll always listen.”
“I know,” Marinette whispered. “Some things are just hard to say.”
“Well, for what it’s worth, I too think you’re an extraordinary person. But you already know that.”
“I do.” She placed a hand on his forearm, softly pulling it. It took Luka a minute to realize she was attempting to take his hand out of his pocket. He obliged as discreetly as possible. When the hand was fully out, she entwined her fingers between his.
Luka’s heart drummed louder, wondering if this was a sweet dream, or if it was as real as it felt.
“I really do,” Marinette said, looking directly into his eyes. She opened and closed her mouth several times. “I-I … I, um, I wanted to, uh, I wanted to say—”
Luka placed a finger over her lips. “You don’t have to say it. If you don’t feel comfortable with it, you don’t have to say it.”
“I want to,” she insisted. “I know you always know what I mean. But … Luka, I like you. As more than a friend.”
The air trapped itself inside his lungs. His heart was about to burst out of his ribcage. A celebratory melody rang out in his mind. He then understood why she wanted to say it: hearing the words made a world of difference. It felt different than simply suspecting. It made it real. It reminded him why he had been so forward in the first place, when he had the chance.
The hand that was still trapped in his pocket slid out, landing on her cheek. Luka couldn’t contain the excitement the words brought. He could feel a wide grin paint his face, but he didn’t care if it made him like a goofball.
“You have no idea how happy those words make me,” he said, letting out a shuddered breath and leaning to her lips.
There was a clatter on a nearby car, snapping them both out of the bubble they had built between themselves. Turning to the source of the sound, they found Rose scrambling to grab her phone that landed on the hood of a car where she seemed to have been hiding behind. Next to Rose were Juleka, Ivan, and Mylène unsuccessfully trying to take cover.
“Oh gosh,” Marinette whined, covering her face.
Luka chuckled. “You guys are not very good with the sneaking and spying.”
“I was so close,” Rose lamented, as Juleka gave her girlfriend a sympathetic pat on the shoulder.
“Sorry!” Mylène waved a hand towards them. “We didn’t mean to interrupt you guys!”
“This is so embarrassing,” Marinette’s muffled voice said.
Luka looked between their friends and Marinette. He smiled and asked, “D’you wanna run?”
Marinette raised her head, with her lips in the shape of an ‘o.’ Without a second thought, she eagerly nodded. Luka grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the nearby bridge to run across it. Meanwhile, the rest of Kitty Section yelled at them to return.
“Where are we going?!” she panted.
“Wherever!” he responded, letting out a laugh. Marinette laughed too, just as eager to explore whatever it was that they had just started.
