Round 2 is over! Let's recap:
A Bracket, Day One: Easy Pete crushed Santiago's post-presidential assassination aspirations in a landslide; Red Lucy avenged Maj. Elizabeth Kieran's incredibly close Round 1 loss by similarly crushing the poll's most pathetic man, Beagle, in a victory for feminism; Old Ben climbed further in the ranks with a close win over Manny Vargas*; and Ranger Ghost sailed into Round 3 over Tommy Torini.
A Bracket, Day Two: Heartthrob Harland desecrated Pvt. Kowalski in the round's first of several dramatic upsets; the #TRASHSWEEP continued well apace by laying waste to Pacer; Swank and his big ol' eyes saw a win over old Ranger Andy; and the love for 10 of Spades carried him to victory over his fellow NCR soldier Maj. Knight*.
A Bracket, Day Three: The Hadrian Gang unfortunately could not survive against the high-seed monster, Fantastic; Rotface gave Boxcars a tip: get eliminated from the tournament; the Garret Twins made a smear on the sidewalk out of bubbly Brotherhood initiate Melissa Watkins; and Ignacio Rivas's* good nature wasn't enough to take down Trudy from Goodsprings.
A Bracket, Day Four: Fan-favorite Keely utterly crucified houndmaster Antony, which has knocked every member of Caesar's Legion who isn't a slave from the tournament completely; Mr. RADical successfully just laid there while Jimmy* from Casa Madrid couldn't impress; Regis from the Great Khans just barely eked out the W to make Cliff Briscoe extinct; and Mick & Ralph pulled an overnight upset against Old Lady Gibson to punch their ticket.
B Bracket, Day One: Daisy Whitman blew up Raquel; Ringo wrecked Ramos; preliminary fave Angela Williams pulled off an astonishing upset against number two seed Oliver Swanick; and Allen Marks' victory over Crandon & Jules goes to show that the corpses keep winning.
B Bracket, Day Two: Beatrix Russell ate Chomps Lewis; Emily Ortal left Pvt. Kyle Edwards in the radioactive dust; The Lonesome Drifter drifted easily into Round 3 over Michael Angelo & Kate; and Siri beat Malcolm Holmes but not without a surprising amount of turnout for the cap-collecting good samaritan.
B Bracket, Day Three: No-Bark Noonan opened up the all-Khans bracket by kicking Oscar Velasco out of the tournament; Jessup & McMurphy successfully defeated a frail and sickly child; Melissa Lewis succeeded where her father had failed the day before with a victory over Cannibal Johnson; Doctor Usanagi proves that STEM is more valuable than an English degree by giving Jerry the Punk another beating.
B Bracket, Day Four: Big Beard & Little Beard trounce the Gundersons, probably because Heck was the only one with a beard; Chris Haversam throws Meyers back in the clink; Mister Holdout couldn't hold out against Sarah Weintraub; and finally, in the single most massive (624 votes) and close (tied as late midnight with 500 votes) and polarizing (just check the notes) match-up in the entire tournament so far, Calamity the ghoul pulled an upset over Cpl. Betsy*, who's probably dealing with her loss in therapy. Hopefully Dr. Usanagi doesn't bring up her own win.
*Happy Pride Month, losers! The first round of June and literally every canonically queer character (except for Red Lucy, bisexual [edit: and Sarah Weintraub, also bisexual!]) got voted out, and that's hilarious. Funniest possible thing that could have happened on here, the gay and transgender website, during the gay and transgender month, in a tournament for the gay and transgender video game. (Beatrix Russell and Old Ben might also be exceptions, but it's minor; I only can't remember if you can sleep with them as the same sex or not when they're working at the Atomic Wrangler, but even then they may just be gay4pay. Not that there's anything wrong with that!)
You can see all of the Round 2 polls here, and the tournament bracket has been updated so that you can get a preview of the matches yet to come in Round 3. Voting will pause for a bit while I prepare graphics and bracket posts, so use this downtime to mourn the fallen, celebrate the risen, and submit designated cheerleader endorsements for your favorite remaining characters in their upcoming rounds. It's only going to get more tense from here!

A Chenford pre relationship fic- Why didn’t you like her ? Part 2
Summary- The second part to ‘why didn’t you like her ? Tim and Lucy haven't spoken in a week, but are ordered by Grey to ride together- but it’s no usual patrol job. It’s dangerous. Will their feelings bubble to the surface when faced with it ?
Incl: Angst, angst with a happy ending, pining Tim and Lucy, Hurt, hurt/comfort, slight fluff
Warnings: swearing, talks of shooting and someone being shot.
“Bradford, Chen, you’ll be riding together today. We need all hands on deck. Victor Ramos is back in town- he’s a known drug lord and murderer, we lost him last time, that will not be happening today.” Tim and Lucy looked at each other hesitantly. They’re not sure what they expected when Grey called them into his office, but it’s certainly made things awkward. Tim and Lucy haven’t spoken since their interrupted heart to heart last week; Tim’s been busy with Metro and Lucy has been riding with Aaron most days. It’s been an awkward few days, but mostly- a painful few days.
Neither Lucy or Tim have been able to sleep lately; their minds continuously racing with ‘what ifs’. What if their conversation never got intruded by Chris ? What if the other felt the same ? No matter how much they tried, sleep was no friend to these thoughts. And each of their hearts felt heavy- both carrying a weight that pulled them down more than any thing else could.
Lucy and Tim nervously look around, their eyes ever so slowly meeting each others. As Lucy puts her head down, Grey creases his brows in confusion. “Will there be a problem with you two riding together that I should know about ?” At the utterance of his words, Lucy turned towards Tim, eyes widened, pleading for him to come up with an answer. Despite him also feeling lost for what to say, Lucy’s expression pushed his brain to respond with a speed that none of them saw coming. “No Sir, we can ride together- no problems.”
Grey nodded and turned towards his desk, collecting the information that both of them needed. Tim made sure not to take a glance at Lucy, he could feel the burning of her glare in the side of his face; and he did not want it front on. He knew why she was mad- they hadn’t talked in a week, and now, the first time they would be, they’d be at work. He knows she likes to talk things out when they both have the right time and place to fully discuss their feelings- catching a murderous drug dealer was not either of those things.
The atmosphere in the shop was tense. Neither one of them had spoken a word since getting in- only finger tapping and heavy breathing filling the space. Tim found himself picking at the leather chair- a habit Lucy often performed when she was nervous- a habit that he claimed was ‘annoying and useless’. But right now, as he felt the fabric peel under his nails, he couldn’t help but think she was right; it was something to distract him from the uncomfortable silence that permeated around the two of them- something that was completely foreign to their relationship, making the situation almost twice as uncomfortable.
The crackling sound of the radio cuts through the quiet, Greys voice causing both of them to breathe a sigh of relief. “Bradford, Chen- Victor Ramos has been spotted 2 miles from where you are; dispatch is sending the location. DO NOT let him go”. Tim’s foot pushed firmly down on the pedal, the adrenaline coursing through his veins wiping the awkwardness away almost instantly. “Lucy- I know it’s been a weird week, and we need to talk, but this is about catching a criminal now, we need to focus, no getting hurt; you hear me ? You and I can wait”.
He’s not sure where the words came from, but he knows he’s been desperate to say them since the moment she walked out of the break room with tears in her eyes. ‘We need to talk’ It was a widely used phrase that was often followed by bad news- but in this case, it could be what ended the chance for the two of them, or be the start of it. Maybe he’d been blinded by the danger of the upcoming situation, but he knew he had to tell her; he needed to.
Lucy turned her head towards him, bracing herself with a sharp inhale and a purse of her lips. “I hear you. We’ll be okay Tim. Now, let’s catch Ramos” Both of them share a look of understanding, their eyes connoting things that only words could for some- but not them. The unspoken conversations have been their ‘thing’ from the beginning. The moment Lucy first looked at him in her first roll call, she knew what he was thinking, and he knew what she was. Lucy has never told him before, but she thinks it’s because his soul is entwined with her own- like she was supposed to meet him. She knew if she told him that, that he’d roll his eyes at her.
“Lucy ? You okay ?” Lucy snapped out of her trance, Tim’s words alerting her to the fact that she’s been spaced out looking at him for the past 30 seconds. “Oh, erm- yeah, I’m fine”. Tim looks at her suspiciously, nerves now invading his adrenaline rush. She needs to be focused and composed- she knows this ! What could possibly be more important than her safety right now ? “Lucy, listen to me. We’re a minute away from the location. This is not some regular call, this guy is dangerous and it’s just the two of us. He’s got guys everywhere, so we need to be prepared so that we don’t blow our cover before backup arrives- okay ? Whatever is on your mind, it does not matter right now !”
Lucy nods rapidly in agreement. She knows his small outburst came from a place of worry, and in all honesty, she was a little spaced. But she’s a cop- she’s handled many of a situation like this, she knows what she’s doing and how she’s supposed to be. As she makes a mental note to argue with him about it later, they pull up to a dingy and dark alleyway; an abandoned factory centred in the middle, the sight of it sending chills up both of their bodies.
“You wanna take the left, I take right ?” Lucy whisperingly questions Tim. As he scans the area, he nods and directs Lucy with the motions of his hands. Before they lose sight of each other, Lucy turns her head over her shoulder and murmurs Tim’s name. As he hears the melodic sound of her voice, his eyes meet hers, the trouble and worry that they hold bearing into his own. “Be careful” he nods and sends her a small smile “you too”- each of them then parting ways. Lucy enters through a side door, careful not to make any loud or sudden steps. As she turns on her flashlight, she notices a large, thin piece of wood covering a part of the wall. Finding it odd and misplaced, she moves closer to inspect it and when she realises there are no traps, she chips away at it as quietly as she can.
“Come on you stubborn piece of shit, you’re really giving Tim a run for his money here” she mumbles to herself. Her growing frustration at the lack of leeway turns her attention elsewhere. Then It gleams in her light- a curled piece of metal that she knows in seconds, is exactly what she needs. Picking it up, she paces back to the wall, this time curling the metal through the side of wood and pulling it forcefully towards her. “Yes !” The side panel comes loose, and exposes a hole in the wall. Lucy narrows her eyes, taking a closer look to the details, and discerns that the whole space behind the wall is open.
As she peers through the hole, her heart sinks at the sight, he face paling and her legs almost buckling beneath her. Tim had also found the room- but he was currently being held at gun point. Lucy wastes no time in calling for backup and an ambulance, her hands powerfully ripping through the wood, not caring about the scratches and cuts she’s getting in the process- Tim was in danger, nothing else mattered.
As Tim stood with his hand up, he caught sight of Lucy breaking her way in. The anxiety in his chest rose- it’s not safe for her to come in here right now. Ramos has a gun pointed straight at him, torturing him with the uneasy uncertainty of when he will shoot. “I always knew cops were stupid, but this- this is another level. You think you can come in here and take down my empire with what, your gun and badge ?” Ramos laughed sickeningly, Tim’s teeth grinding into one another as his jaw clenched in anger.
“So Sargent, where’s your friends ?” Ramos waved his gun around the air, chortling at at the power and leverage he currently had over a police Sargent. It’s no shocker that criminals hate cops, but Victor Ramos really hates them. Tim gulped lightly, silently praying to himself that neither Ramos or his men catch Lucy. “Wow, you really do think we’re stupid. I’m here alone”. Ramos raises his brows in humour, his hand reaching to scratch his beard. The darkened charcoal colour of it is certainly not natural, and if it were any other situation, Tim would have poked fun at him for his ‘try hard’ attitude for looking ‘evil’.
“Try again. Where. Are. Your. Friends ?” Ramos took a step forward with the each of his words, pulling the safety off his gun in the process. Tim looked up with his eyes only, his head refusing to engage in his sick power play. “I. Told. You. I’m. Alone”. Ramos shakes his head in mock disappointment, dramatically tutting along. “So if I tell my men to go and check the side entrance, they’re not going to find anyone ? Is that right ?” Tim gulps again, only this time with great concern- Lucy went in the side entrance. Ramos circled him slowly as if a predator stalking his prey. The shuffling of his shoes echoed in the room, the sound mirroring the seconds that ticked by.
“Ahhhh, it seems that’s rattled you slightly. Don’t you think boys ?” He maliciously turned to his team, a venomous smirk etched onto his face. His men snigger in amusement, fingers placed readily on the triggers of their own guns- eager to be the one who makes the shot.
As Lucy pulls apart enough wood to climb into the hole, she arches her way slowly into it and with restraint, eases her way closer to give Tim some backup. She counts in her head as she walks towards him, registering that backup will most likely have just arrived, the tension around her heart releasing somewhat. As she takes another step, the roaring sound of a gunshot blares through the room. Lucys eyes focus in on the scene, her breath hitching in her throat and eyes watering instantaneously at the sight. Tim has been shot.
At the sight of the backup squad entering the premisses and shooting at Ramos and his gang, Lucy runs faster than she ever had, her shoes pounding heavily on the floor, breath quickening in despair. “TIM !!!” She reaches him and kneels right next to him, hands cupping his face in distress. She scans his body- he’s been shot in the abdomen, and there’s a lot of blood already. Lucy places her hands on the wound and presses down to stop the bleeding, a sob escaping her lips at the state that he’s in. “Tim, listen to me. Look at me, Tim !” Tim weakly turns his head towards hers, the faint picture of a smile pulling at his lips upon seeing her- the love of his life.
“Hey Luce, you okay ?” His energy is dropping by the second, his skin paling along with it- he’s in vast amounts of pain, and dizziness is entering his system in large doses. Lucy releases another sob, tears dripping onto Tim’s shirt. “I’m fine” she tries with all her will to send him a smile. She hopes to god that this is not the last time she sees him, but if it is, she doesn’t want him afraid or worried. A pang of anger floods her chest, the thought of anything happening to Tim, sending her in a spiral. This WILL NOT be the last time she sees him.
“Tim, you listen to me, don’t you dare die okay ?! I’m gonna be so pissed at you if you die! You promised me we’d talk, you promised me !!!” The tears escape her aimlessly, another falling as the last one drops. Her lips are wavering uncontrollably. She looks up for a moment to see that backup has caught and cuffed everyone, her attention refocusing back on Tim. “Tim, pro- promise me ! Promise me !!!” She pleads. Her free hand lifts his head and rests it securely in her lap, her fingers caressing his face in comfort.
She notices Tim losing more energy, the weight of his body increasing on her significantly, indicating that sleep is soon to overcome him- she just prays it’s not forever. “Tim, stay awake !! Stay with me, please ! Tim, I love you, you can’t leave me, I love you!” Tim’s lips curl slowly into a smile before the pain takes over and he blacks out, glad that if this is his last moment on earth, he got to spend it with Lucy Chen- the woman who means more to him than anyone in the world. The woman who loves him too.
Lucy’s head falls onto his chest, the sobs eliciting from her own struggling to stay contained. As her head falls onto his chest, she hears the faint pulse of his heart goosebumps rising on her skin. She looks around with hope in her eyes, desperately trying to seek a medic through the tears blocking her vision. As they continue to fall, she sees Bailey running towards her, a breath of relief expelling from her lips. “He’s, he’s been shot in the abdomen. Passed out around 30 seconds ago, he needs medical attention now !!” Bailey nods and helps Lucy lift Tim, rushing him to the ambulance.
At the hospital
Lucys knees wobble in anticipation. It’s been three hours since Tim got wheeled into surgery and she’s still heard nothing. Angela’s hand is clasped tightly in Lucy’s, the two of them clearly panicked and anxious waiting for news. Every so often, Angela brushes her thumb over Lucy’s hand in comfort, the tightness of her grip aiding not only Lucy- but herself. Tim was her best friend, her man of honour. She’s known him for years; and when the news was dropped at the station that Tim had been shot, she felt as if her heart stopped- she felt helpless.
Lucy couldn’t sit still, her anxiety was bubbling higher and higher until she felt sick to the stomach. She turned to Angela, a panic in her eyes “why haven’t they finished yet ? We should have gotten news by now !”. Angela opens her mouth to offer Lucy some words of encouragement- she’s not blind, she sees the looks that Tim and Lucy have sent each other over the years- they hold much more than a ‘typical’ care and concern for a coworker. Not to mention the googly eyes and the particularly bright smiles when they look at each other- it was as obvious as day and night, so she knows that this situation is killing Lucy in way she can’t explain.
Before she gets the chance to speak, every officer in the waiting room is met with the face of Tim’s doctor- this is the moment. Not a single person stays sat down, all itching to know how the surgery went and if Tim is okay. Lucy looks to the Doctor with pleading eyes “is he okay ?”
“He’s going to be fine. The surgery went well, you can go and see him shortly.”
The room exhaled in relief- Tim was okay. A happy sob racked Lucy’s chest, more than ‘over the moon’ to hear the news. She couldn’t think of anything worse than living in a world without Tim Bradford- thank god she doesn’t have to. Lucy crushed Angela into a hug, both of them overwhelmed with joy. The tightness of the hug bears more meaning than any words could’ve- every emotion that they had been feeling poured into it. “He’s gonna be okay Lucy, he’s gonna be okay” Angela wasn’t sure if she was comforting just Lucy or herself too, but the moment she saw the beaming smile imprinted on Lucy’s face, she knew it was love. It reminded her of the way she felt when Wesley was stabbed; only love can cause a reaction like that- Lucy Chen was in love with Tim Bradford.
Angela rubbed Lucy’s arms up and down, eyes brightening at the sight of her joy. “You go see him first.” “Are you sure ?” Angela nodded her head and nudged her playfully on the hip. “Yeah. I think he’d want to see you first.”
Tim’s eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the fluorescent hospital lighting. He groaned at the pain centred at his abdomen, but when he turned to look at it, his pain was no more. Right beside his bed, Lucy sat peering at him with a hopeful smile. She looked tired and her eyes were bloodshot and red. Still, to Tim, she looked beautiful. Lucy notices Tim’s gaze upon her and reaches for his hand the moment he wakes. “Oh thank god ! I was worried I dreamt that you were okay.” A small chuckle flew past her lips, but the sight of him smiling back flashes her back to just before he blacked out. When she thought he was leaving.
“Timothy Bradford, don’t you dare scare me like that again, okay ?! It’s not allowed, I strictly forbid it.” Tim snickered at her request, he knew he couldn’t promise her something like that with the type of job that they both have, but he did know that he never wanted to be the reason for her tears again. “Okay.” Despite the relief circling the room, a question was weighing on Tim. “Did you mean it ?” Lucy furrows her brows- mean what ? She thought she’d made it incredibly clear that she meant every word she just said to him. When Tim clicked on that she had no idea what he was referring to, he continues. “You said you love me. Did you- did you say it because you meant it or because you were worried i would die ?” He asks nervously.
Tears gathered in Lucy’s eyes once again; she’s sure she’s never cried this much in her life. The look of uncertainty on Tim’s face makes her heart clench in pain- of course she meant it. As another tear slid down her face, she leans forward and interlaces their fingers. “Of course I meant it. I love you. I’ve never said those words to anyone before, but I know that I love you. More than anything.” A grin broke out on Tim’s face, his eyes sparkling with delight, until a thought crossed his mind “what about-“
Lucy knows what he’s going to say, and right now, she doesn’t want to hear his name. She just wants Tim. “I broke up with him the day we had our talk. I knew it would never work with him because I only wanted you. I haven’t said anything because I didn’t want you to think that the only reason I wanted to make things work with you was because it didn’t with him. I chose you. You weren’t a second choice Tim, you were my only choice”. Tim’s eyes glisten at the announcement- she’d just said everything he’d ever wanted to hear.
He motioned for her to come closer, the emotions flying around his chest craving an outlet. As she leans closer, he tilts his head further towards her, nose brushing against hers gently. “I love you too.” He utters, before sweeping his lips passionately against Lucy’s, the warmth of her intoxicating him and leaving him yearning for more. She kisses back with a hunger that that can’t be explained; overjoyed to finally be kissing him, but most of all, feeling fortunate and grateful that he’s still here so that she can.
