✨ You and Jiwoo have been best friends since childhood. Practically inseparable, the two of you did everything together. That was up until the start of high school, when mysterious cuts and bruises started appearing on her skin. When questioned, she always brushed them off as "accidents." Never able to hang out or even walk home after school with her, you begin to grow suspicious of her behavior.

The narrow alley opens up to a bunch of rubble, and before you know it, you're stuck in the middle of an intense battle between a monster and a girl wielding an enormous hammer. You blink in disbelief, when suddenly, you realize that girl isn't just anybody, but your best friend, Kim Jiwoo. As the tides turn and Jiwoo starts to lose the battle, you feel a strange power arise within you and glance back at the fox that lead you here, which no longer looks like a normal fox, but an other-worldly creature. He stares at you in urgency before you hear a small voice in your head, asking if you'll sign a contract with him to save your friend. Will you sign the contract and awaken the power surging inside you?

BTS: Love Yourself in Hong Kong

23 and 24 March 2019 - I loved it and had many thoughts about it below the cut.

For the Saturday 23 March show, our seats were basically looking onto the podium at the end of the catwalk so they were great. But the venue is honestly so small that any seat would've been good - this was the 3rd of 4 shows in Hong Kong, and probably the smallest shows they played on the Love Yourself tour and the smallest they'll play in years (except for Muster, lol).

For the Sunday 24 March show, our seats were one section further away from the stage, but it was still a great view with a broader angle that gave me a better view of the staging and VCRs. Both nights, I had a better view than I did at the Sydney Wings show in 2016 - this was just a smaller, closer arena.

And I enjoyed both shows so much! The shows were almost 3 hours long each but they felt like they went by in a flash. And they played so many songs, but also there were SO many more I wish they could've played - their discography is really wild at this point, it's just PACKED with hits.

In many ways the live show is the ultimate piece of fan memorabilia - but it holds a kind of tension within itself too. On the one hand, it's a unique, irreplaceable experience that can't be duplicated or repeated. On the other, especially in kpop where we have so much access to fancams and concert footage, there's pressure for the experience to meet the expectations that we have, to live up to the hype of the previous shows.

(Those two things play off each other too. How else would we - or some of us, anyway - know to watch out for those micro deviations, those little moments when Jimin runs away from Namjoon in Anpanman, when Taehyung and Jin look like they're gonna make out in So What?)

But this idea of the experience as unique and non-replicable is not quite true or not quite as simple as that. We live in an age of digital media and - this is especially true in kpop - incredibly high quality fancams and photos. Sitting at a remove of many metres, and viewing only one side of the stage, there were definitely moments that I 'missed' and had to discover later through social media. And also there's a concert DVD and a concert movie which captures maybe not your show in particular, but the essentials of this tour.

One thing that can't truly be replicated - the atmosphere. It made me laugh, in a delighted way, when the crowd just screamed and sang along to every MV and BT21 CF shown before the show. I just love the comraderie of fandom, the build of excitement. Or how pretty it looked when all the Army bombs were lit up, or when we all took out our phones. It was a good feeling. (Though as @proteinscollide said some Korean-speakers in the row behind us pointed out - it was noticeable that the crowd was much quieter when it was the Korean rather than English! LOL.)

Some of the very brief ments early in the show were repeated the following night, but their ending ments were unique to each evening. A Cantonese translator from behind the scenes translated after each of them spoke, except when they spoke in English - this helped me a little, but my Cantonese is so poor and the crowd was so LOUD that again I had to check on twitter afterwards for full translations! A few of them tried to also say some phrases in Cantonese which was very endearing; out of them all, Hoseok had the best pronounciation (which I guess fits in well with his history of having pretty good Japanese and English pronounciation too).

ETA: oh and I loved Jin with the disco ball sunnies and the pirate mask for each of the end ments!!! He's so ridiculous....I love him....

Notably on the 23rd, it was the first time Namjoon referenced their upcoming Map of the Soul: Persona comeback. On the 24th, he mentioned again that comeback was coming and it felt like it was really soon - you're telling me LOL.

Okay brief notes on the setlist:

Idol - what a way to start the show with a bang. As far as live staging goes, it's so dynamite.

Save Me/I'm Fine - I always feel like Save Me is such a tease because it stops right before my favourite verse from Hoseok and Yoongi lol but I DO love I'm Fine!

Magic Shop - lots of walking around on stage rather than choreo, this is such a lovely song!

Junghope VCR - this VCR omg. I had seen blurry fancams of it before but can we just pause and reflect for a moment on how immensely shippy it is? THEY ARE IN LOVE! SO DOMESTIC! THE RED STRING OF FATE don't look at me.

Just Dance - wow, Hoseok just makes such amazing use of the stage. Even after having seen the LY concert movie and NUMEROUS fancams, it really is true that the full impact of this stage is best experienced live (this is a great thread). The way he uses the entire space, on the raised platform and then on the catwalk, how he interacts with the crowd - he's just DYNAMITE.

Euphoria - the aesthetic of this song is so Jungkook to me, the optimism and the brightness. Also I don't know how but on the first night I somehow did not notice the gold glitter in the air AT ALL? I guess I was too caught up in JK and the dancers!

I Need U/Run - I JUST LOVE THESE SO MUCH THANK U. I was rewatching the MVs today and I just… what a time, what an era. HYYH gave us so much.

Minjoon VCR - this just screams Lake House AU, doesn't it? Separated by time but not space… Speaking of AUs, it's fascinating to think about how this was originally Yoongi and Jimin (shown in the concert DVD behinds). So they originally paired up Serendipity and Seesaw? I think it makes more sense the way it is now. Would be super interesting to see the unshown VCRs though.

Serendipity - I looked for Jimin’s tattoo both nights! And did not see it, argh! Yet the fansite photos clearly show, it was there. Sometimes, you don't see it at all at the time. This is a great stage, Jimin is such a magnetic performer and it's a super impressive dance. Also, bubbles!

Love - the boldness of Namjoon to perform this completely solo, no dancers, no stage effects aside from lighting - I admire that so much. He has the charisma for it. (Also it is very great when Namjoon slips off his robe and Hobi helps him put on his jacket, in a neat reversal of what they did for Boy Meets Evil/BST at an awards show a couple of years ago, p.s. Namseok.)

DNA - The screams for this! Both during the show and before the show when the MV was showing - it really speaks to how many people became fans in the LY era, I think. I think I've come really full circle on DNA. I grew almost tired of it when it was at its peak, but now with a bit of time and distance, I can really enjoy it again. That choreo is still wonderful. (And it's hilarious seeing that Vhope moment in the beginning get more and more casual over the course of this tour. At both shows, they just held hands or just hugged.)

Medley - the first night was I think Boyz with Fun, Attack on Bangtan, Fire, Baepsae, Dope. Second night was Dope, Go Go, Blood Sweat and Tears, Boy in Luv, Fire. I enjoyed both immensely! Hobi did the splits for the Baepsae dance break! I will never be over BST! I LOVE!

Airplane Pt 2 - this is just such a superior song and superior choreo, it's SO GOOD, thank you.

Taehyung VCR - this is so stunning, I can't even. When it pulls back and he puts his hand on the glass… and it frosts over... At the end my friend leaned over and said 'house of psychics' and was she wrong? NO SHE WAS NOT.

Singularity - this stage was immensely beautiful and breathtaking and Taehyung is purely charisma. I found out after the show that he was kind of sick on the 23rd? I honestly could not tell.

Fake Love - I've seen this so many times but you know what, this choreo is still GREAT. And Bangtan in all black, all emo is such a look.

Yoonjin VCR - this was the most straight forward of the VCRs. Again, fascinating to think it was originally Namjoon and Seokjin, Love and Epiphany.

Seesaw - the staging for this is so fun, Yoongi doing his dances and sliding off the bench and running back up again - he's so good at this!

Epiphany - oh good crying time. I did actually get a tear in my eye when this played the first night. It's just a song that means a lot to me… MUSIC, EMOTIONS! A POTENT COMBINATION! And Jin is very handsome.

The Truth Untold - vocal line all in a row like four flowers, they're just so good! The way this stage used the raised platform and the four screens was also really effective. It's such a lovely song.

Tear - I've seen so many fancams for this and the concert movie but I was still? blown?? away????? Rapline are just absolutely monsters of charisma and stage presence, and the way they deliver this with complete commitment - I was slain right there. Hoseok's ending verse, FUCK.

Mic Drop - NO ONE DOES IT LIKE BTS thank u

This was the 'end' of the show but of course we all knew there would be more. Strangely, or perhaps this is cultural, this led to a subdued interlude. There were definitely attempts to get fanchants going - sometimes successful, sometimes not, I laughed a little at some of the awkward pauses - and especially on the 23rd, there was a touching crowd singalong to Spring Day. But overall it was more subdued than I expected given how loudly the crowd did scream when BTS were on stage.

So What - SUCH A CLUB ANTHEM, it was so delightful seeing them all having so much fun! I had fun too! Fun for everyone!

Anpanman - the cutest fucking choreo, and the cutest fucking group, that is all.

Answer: Love Myself - all the ending feels… emotionally wrung out… a little exhausted… but just seeing how happy they looked and how happy I felt - I love concert.

Oh, hey, something I haven’t done in a long time.

So I started watching Amazon’s Wheel of Time series, and even though I’m only two and a half episodes in I already have some OPINIONS (derogatory). Yet I also have OPINIONS (complimentary). So I’mma do something I haven’t done in a very long time:

Reaction blogging. For those of you who have no interest, blacklist #mv watches WoT. Otherwise, let me word vomit the things I’ve noticed so far.

I’m enjoying the series (contrary to what the below opinions might lead you to believe), but it’s somewhat frustrating in that.... well, I won’t lie and say the books were perfect. They had a lot of issues. So the show is deviating somewhat from what happens in the books. And the series is doing a lot to correct said issues - what they do right, they do right.

But what they do wrong, they do WRONG.

So I’m invested, but there’s a lot of things that are catching in my craw.

Without further ado, our story so far... (spoilers for the show below)

FIRST OFF, let’s hear it for diverse casting. White characters are far outnumbered, and it’s a refreshing relief.

BUT... everyone is super light-skinned, and the two darkest-skinned actors are portraying the worst, most sadistic characters (Paidan Fain and Jaichim Carradin). So..... hmm.

They upped the badassery of the female characters (something Robert Jordan had a bit of an issue with) to the point where even before they tap the Source, Egwene and Nynaeve are fierce bitches just as simple townswomen. So while they have Nynaeve dragged off during the Trolloc raid on Two Rivers for no apparent reason, they also show her beating the shit out of said Trolloc before killing it. And while Egwene is still young and inexperienced, she knows what she wants and she isn’t gonna let Rand’s small-town dreams and expectations keep her down.

Yet in trying to make the characters edgier, they’re tripping over themselves.

Perrin was already difficult to like - he doesn’t have a lot going for him, and it’s hard to point out where he really effects the main plot. So the show saw all this and thought, “What if we made him even less interesting?” So they give him a wife. The director and the actor super-dee-duper swear they were aware of the fridging trope and avoided it.... yet slam headfirst into it with zero awareness. Like, the wife has about three lines total, zero (0) personality, and is accidentally killed by Perrin while they’re defending the forge from Trollocs, all to make Perrin’s conflict about violence external rather than internal (according to the reasoning given by the director, anyway).

Which is bullshit.

Then they apparently completely erase Elias, so Perrin has no connection to the wolves other than them randomly showing up and licking his leg. Even worse, he has a dream where a wolf is eating the corpse of his dead wife. Like, why did they need to exacerbate Perrin’s struggle against accepting wolves? He already wangsted about it for far too long, and now this shit? Jesus.

Then there’s Mat. Now, I love Mat - he’s my favorite character. Yet they took his family - which was wholesome, loving, and caring in the books - and randomly made his mother a drunk and his father a womanizer, neither of whom care about Mat or his younger sisters. I still can’t quite understand the reasoning behind this. It’s like they erased all the bad parts of Mat and gave them to Rand (who needed no help in being a jackass), which makes Mat’s corruption from the Shadar Logoth dagger seem to come out of nowhere rather than a deepening of his already present flaws, which makes Rand look like a dumbass for not noticing. Like, Mat doesn’t find the dagger because he’s a scamp that’s bored and looking for stuff to do in Shadar Logoth - he just randomly wakes up, wanders to a building, and picks up the knife. Literally just like that.

And speaking of Rand... before he tapped into the Source, he was pretty tolerable. Yet in the show he’s giving serious The Gathering Storm vibes already. Not to mention the show REALLY oversells his and Egwene’s relationship, at one point insinuating they fuck. Like, why.

Then there’s Thom Merriland. They erase him from the first part of the adventure, and when he does show up, he’s a huge dick. Like, stealing-from-Rand-and-Mat-and-rubbing-it-in-their-face kinda dick. Again, why.

I will say, they are NAILING Nynaeve and Lan’s relationship. Like, even if I hadn’t read the books, their interactions would be making me blush. They are giving EVERY reason why Nynaeve and Lan would respect each other despite having opposing stances, and they are not only setting the stage but decorating it for their inevitable hook up.

I also love Moiraine and the general aesthetic for Aes Sedai. They’re really leaning into the whole battle mage thing in their costume design, so while they retain the dressy robe type gear you might expect from a mage, it’s not just women in dresses. Moiraine is also given her dues, being just as badass as she is in the books.

And just now, they’ve introduced the Tinkers - a people whose reputation is so profound that even backwaters like Two Rivers had heard of them. Yet for some reason, they made Perrin and Egwene completely unaware of them (and likely the other Two Rivers folks as well) and gave all the exposition to Aram. That’s not a good start for the show avoiding the more problematic aspects of the Tinkers.

Like I said, I’m enjoying the show and I’m invested. I just.... have OPINIONS.

The Broken Dart

I want to introduce my wip more, even though I’m at a weird place with it. Currently, it’s a fanfiction, but I want to rewrite it as an original novel. So this is it as the fanfic version and plans for the original/more thoughts on that are at the bottom.

The Broken Dart is a Noir, Action, and Suspense story which takes place in modern day Seoul, South Korea.

Twenty-two-year-old Youngjae’s a remarkably logical student who ends up trapped by a plot to assassinate a university official. Despite the leader’s vigilante-like claims about “making the world a better place,” he knows he’s working with a political gang and has few options other than compliance.

As he struggles to maintain his morality and escape, the animosity between the two most prominent members -- Jongup, a man who refuses to let anyone die and Daehyun, who’s never pledged his complete loyalty -- intensifies. Youngjae becomes caught in the middle of a power game which has lasted for years and rushes towards an end he wants to prevent.

An excerpt:

“You attacked him?” Yongguk’s voice jarred Youngjae out of the memory. Overriding his more intelligent thoughts, he forced his trembling legs forward. One step. Two steps. He searched for a free seat and a kinder face.

The last man’s lips curled the slightest bit upwards, and he tilted his head towards the chair on his other side. Youngjae took the invitation. His vows to bravery ran thin as Jongup leaned forward, freezing Youngjae beneath his glare.

The new man shifted beside him, and Youngjae’s peripherals made out a small mole under his narrowed eyes.

“Almost killed him.” Jongup scanned Youngjae, and whatever he found seemed to please him. He smirked. “I should’ve.” Youngjae’s back stiffened, but his eyes never moved. Even as his fear crept up his throat and threatened to choke him, he refused to show it.

“For existing?” Eye-mole had a rich voice, a hint of amusement buried in it. “Be careful, Jongup. Your psycho is showing.” Jongup growled, distracted from Youngjae for the first time since he’d spotted him.

Eye-mole said nothing. His birthmark was a black spot on the corner of an otherwise light russet eyelid. “Need something?” He raised his drink and pointed it towards Jongup.

Silence. Barely-maintained, it seemed, considering the nervous glances shot at Jongup from around the table.

Youngjae’s protector-of-sorts drained the final sip of his drink.

Jongup hissed a warning when he reached for the whiskey bottle. Eye-mole stopped, hand outstretched. He laughed. His hands pushed against the table like he needed to propel himself away from it. The mole disappeared under his bulging eyelid.

“Jung Daehyun.” He shook Youngjae’s hand, ignoring the limp grip. “I’m the sane one.” Daehyun winked, quirking the side of his mouth upwards.

Hell, Youngjae didn’t even care about the sanity. Jung Daehyun was his new favorite person.

So... why this one? This isn’t the only wip I have, and it’s got lots of problems, but I want to attempt to convert this into an original for a couple reasons. First, due to the nature of the fandom it’s written for, my characters are already almost ocs, except for their names and appearances. I built TBD off of two mv/short films with no dialogue, and I included/removed/changed parts of the originals to fit my characters. Probably 80% of the plot is my own. Second, I just... love it. A lot. I don’t want to stop working on it. Third, throughout it, I kept wishing I could deviate even further than the canon, and making it an original would open doors.

So where to from here? Well, I need to develop true ocs for it and decide what I want to change now that I don’t have a mandatory cast of 6 Korean men. I need a new setting and to decide what plot I want to include and what is too similar to the original films. There’s a lot to do, but I want to try!
