Rewatching ep.31 of Love Between Fairy and Devil and blogging my reaction
Here it is. The much dreaded episode 31. Spoilers ahead.
Nooooo. Not the grass bracelet. She made it with so much love and care for you, DFQC :(
And then DFQC orders Xunfeng – who is overjoyed when he sees people suffering – to keep an eye on her. Good choice, DFQC, what could possibly go wrong?
Perhaps it’s my idea – I tend to be biased when it comes to Xunfeng – but does he enjoy this more than he should?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ronghao is alone with Xiao Lanhua. What could go wrong?
So he tries to kill her. But if she dies, then DFQC dies too
Oh DFQC felt her suffering and he tries to find her
Changheng! I have never been so happy to see you! (still a part of me foolishly believes that somehow she will be saved)
Tumblr media
Poor Xiao Lanhua. She’s crawling to the sword in order to kill herself. It’s not fair :(
Everyone died during the battle. THE END
Yes, Changheng show him!
Ok, now Ronghao takes off his mask. Oh come on, Ronghao why do you have to be so handsome? I want to hate you, but I can’t. I mean you expect an evil monster behind the mask and you get one of the most handsome men in the world, all wrapped up in sadness and blurry eyes
Tumblr media
I get anxiety by watching Xiao Lanhua slowly trying to reach for the sword, while DFQC musters all his remaining strength to reach her. And the music. Ufffff
Omg she took the sword, she took the sword. Nooooooooo :(
Yeah, show us her happy moments with Si Ming, now, break our heart even more
“Everything in this world is fate, but love.” So Xiao Lanhua, chooses to love him, chooses to kill herself to save him. I am sad, world. I am sad
She stabbed herself :( and now he found her but it was too late
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The scene where she soars into the sky, goosebumps
All the dead persons in the battlefield are revived and the statues come to life. Ronghao of course only cares about Chi Di
The mark of the curse is erased on DFQC’s forehead. This is so sad
And the first thing she says is “This is great. You are fine.” All she cares about is him. :( I can’t, I seriously can’t.
Tumblr media
He takes her to see the sun. Like he used to take her, back when they were living in Arbiter Hall. Back then he did so to make her feel better, so that he could use her power. Now because she is dying.
“Smile.” This is heartbreaking
And it’s not only that she died, her body was gone too. Poor DFQC
Tumblr media
DFQC has recently regained his emotions and he had to feel and understand all of them in such a short time. How can one handle all this pain and grief? Especially a person who has been devoid of feelings for almost all his life?
The 100.000 soldiers were released, there is also truce now for 100 years
Jieli lies to Shangque making him believe she was working for the Lord of Haishi from the beginning and no one threatened her. Poor Jieli and poor Shangque
Baby dragon is so pure :(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“How long did I sleep?” asks ChiDi. About 30000 years
Oh no no no no no no no, the dream scene. Noooooo this hurts more than the death scene
“I think I had a nightmare. Let me hug you.” *taking deep breaths to calm myself*
They deserved to have these moments in reality. Ugh. I get upset because we were robbed.
I can’t help thinking that the director was like “Dylan, Esther, just be yourselves.” These scenes look so much like their bts
“We have been married for 500 years.” My baby boy lives his fantasy dream life
Aaaand he is dreaming
Tumblr media
All I have to say is that this was painful.

Reflections on Ep. 1 of LBFAD on rewatch
Tumblr media
Arbiter of Fate Hall: In the beautiful open and airy sky abode of Siming Dian, Xiao Lanhua (XLH) manages to stay cheerful, kind, and resilient despite her lonely circumstances. Her master Siming left her alone 500 years ago with no explanation. Through no fault of her own, everyone looks down on her because of her weak power and origin from the mortal realm. Only her four plant spirit friends are nice to her, but they have no physical bodies and are awake only a couple of hours every day. XLH has one dream that keeps her going despite her loneliness, to work at Fountain Palace, be surrounded by company and see her secret crush, the God of War Changheng (CH), everyday.
Siming, master manipulator and arbiter of fate, had always been aware of XLH’s true identity and spun many stories to guide her destiny. XLH’s corroded immortal roots were part of the disguise bestowed upon her by her parents, and Siming helped cover up this secret by claiming that she spoiled XLH’s roots with wine. Siming told XLH that she had been about to dispose of XLH’s orchid form 1500 years ago prior to her transformation into a human, but CH visited and persuaded her to keep XLH, thereby saving her life. This story was designed to push her towards CH, who was an important part of her destiny. In truth, Siming would never have disposed of XLH and CH had never even met Siming.
Tumblr media
Yunzhong Water Pavilion: Our brooding second male lead, CH, is called back to Shuiyuntian after a resounding victory over the forces of the Moon Tribe at the Northernmost Ocean of Cangyan Sea! But actually, the Moon Tribe were so disorganised (thanks to the efforts of Ronghao) that CH is embarrassed by his victory and doesn’t think it worth mentioning. CH’s older brother, Yunzhong (YZ) is the current ruler since their father, the powerful Sun God Lord Dong, is in seclusion after the Battle of Two Tribes 30,000 years ago. During this battle, Lord Dong’s energy was severely drained by his attempt to defeat and imprison the Moon Supreme, DongFang Qingcang (DFQC), with the help of the entire celestial High Council. This demonstrates DFQC's immense power, greater than even that of the almighty Sun God (who is referred to as "the Creator" in ep. 34). Unable to completely defeat DFQC, it took Shuiyuntian’s combined efforts just to separate DFQC’s spirit from his body and seal both in the Haotian matrix, a powerful magical seal made of their combined energy.
YZ and CH are half-brothers with different mothers who do not get along (delightfully though, CH later finds the older brother he never had in DFQC! :D ) Another important figure on the High Council is Supreme Liyuan, Lord Dong’s peer and among the eldest in the Council. YZ and Liyuan speak privately with CH and inform him that his help is urgently needed to reinforce the Haotian matrix, which has been weakened by the disembodied spirit of DFQC!
Shuyu Forest: XLH, having heard from visiting fairies that CH has returned, sets out to find him in Shuyu Forest. When XLH approaches CH in the forest, he is thinking about her right at that moment! He is holding the Magical Jade Firefly stone he promised to get her 500 years ago – he actually got it for her on his recent excursion to Northernmost Ocean and is trying to capture a firefly for her. He’s more obsessed with her than she is with him! :D But, he believes it is a forbidden love, as he is promised to the Goddess of Xishan who disappeared 30,000 years ago. CH takes an orchid flower from XLH to remember her by, and drops the Jade stone for her to keep. His smile as he leaves is so sad and heartbroken, believing they can never be together.
Arbiter Hall: XLH discovers that CH’s destiny leaf has unexpectedly changed – but the destinies of high gods are supposed to be very stable! CH’s destiny changed because of DFQC's actions. Now he is destined for the destruction of both his body and spirit (meaning he won’t be able to reincarnate and will be gone for good). In the last episode of the series DFQC changes XLH’s destiny as well. This is great foreshadowing! And it highlights DFQC’s unique tendency to break nature’s laws time and time again! :D
Haotian Tower: DFQC’s disembodied spirit finally breaks through the Haotian matrix, which it has pounded away at every day for the past 30,000 years! His formidable energy flares and knocks back the thousands of celestial high gods trying to contain him. CH unnecessarily risks himself by moving ahead of everyone else. This kind of foolish bravado is typical for him through the series, as he repeatedly insists on putting himself in danger when he is already gravely injured. He believes it his duty as God of War to protect others, and underestimates DFQC, whom he has never met. But also, his bitterness about his lack of control over any aspect of his life has turned him into a risk-taker.
Tumblr media
Luckily for CH, XLH has decided to sacrifice her life and spirit for him when she shields him wearing a mask (an anonymous sacrifice!). She knows she has no power except to take the blow that would otherwise have completely destroyed CH. Due to Siming’s (false) story about CH persuading Siming to keep XLH 1500 years ago, she feels that she owes CH her life, and has a deep sense of gratitude towards him. It’s profound that XLH is so self-sacrificing and cares for others above her own life. Her courageous and self-sacrificing nature are defining characteristics for her, shown several times over the series.
However, sensing the presence of XLH’s Xilan energy, DFQC’s spirit ceases its attack, and decides instead to bring XLH to DFQC’s body. Only members of the Xilan tribe had the ability to reunite spirits and bodies that had been separated, and XLH is the last surviving member of the Xilan tribe (mentioned by Ronghao in ep. 7). In carrying XLH back into the Haotian Tower with his spiritual energy, DFQC has now given up his victory of breaking through the Haotian matrix which his spirit had worked towards every day for the past 30,000 years! The celestials (apart from CH who is shocked at the fairy's sacrifice) collectively breathe a huge sigh of relief and waste no time in promptly resealing the matrix.
XLH floats through the top tier of Haotian tower towards DFQC’s unconscious body, carried by a forcefield generated by DFQC’s spirit. His graceful figure suspended in mid-air is reflected in her lustrous eyes as she gazes at him in wonder, astonished by his beauty. She is drawn closer by his forcefield until her hand makes contact with his chest. XLH's green Xilan energy flares, restoring his body’s consciousness, and reuniting his body and spirit! His eyes are blue pools of unfathomable power as he opens them and looks at her.
Tumblr media
DFQC needs more of XLH’s healing Xilan energy to regain his strength. Since his arms are chained, he creates an irresistible forcefield, visible on screen, to draw her mouth to his in an intimate kiss. However, feeding on her energy has unintended consequences. As their spiritual energies collide in a resplendent flare of blue and green energy and an explosion of lights, XLH unconsciously casts the one-heart curse on him as a protective response.
Entering upon his frozen metaphysical Sea of Emotions, she discovers a dead tree, touches it curiously and brings it back to life. While their spirits are connected, the lightning in Haotian tower strikes, resulting in their spirits actually swapping bodies! All of this causes XLH to pass out; meanwhile, DFQC in her body is completely unfazed and quietly meditates on the floor.
Tumblr media
XLH regains consciousness to find someone who looks like her but is much more terrifying before her! Realising that she has swapped bodies with the beautiful man that she was kissing, she curiously feels her new body’s hard chest and muscular thighs – until DFQC glares at her sharply. They are now both stuck within the tower without the means to escape.

Have a teaser for my @lbfad-minibang piece...
"Did you see the Moon Supreme's wrist and neck?" Ronghao murmured to Lord Yunzhong, after the fires were extinguished. "There were marks there, and I suspect many more hidden by his robes." He paused, thoughtful. "They looked exactly like the marks your whip burned into Xiao Lanhua's skin."
🌸🌸🌸
Qingcang tasted blood.
His eyelids were crusted with cement. His limbs pulsed with banked fire. And his mouth was full of copper.
"Wooden Head, please, come back–"
That voice…
Did he even occupy a body anymore? He let his head tip to one side, experimenting. The flare of dizziness confirmed that yes, he did.
Open your eyes, he told himself. You are the powerful Moon Supreme and you will open your eyes right now because you need to see her.
When his mutinous muscles finally responded, he could only squint against the brilliance of twilight.
His precious Xiao Lanhua was right there holding him, brow drawn, skin pale from strain. The corners of his lips rose. He was - he was smiling. On his own. What a miracle this little flower was.
Her fingers lifted to brush his cheek. The smell of blood jolted through him. He grabbed her hand and stared at the slash across her wrist.
"It's fine," she reassured, trying to pull away. "You had to drink a little so I could revive you, that's all. I'm fine."
"It's not fine," he growled. "Don't wound yourself. Not for me, not for anyone."
Her gaze fell. "You were dying. My blood healed you."
He… hadn't known she could do that. As if he hadn't already received ample proof of her divine nature. But…
"Why?" he asked.
Her shoulders rose and fell. "I don't know. I always could."
"Not that. I mean–" He grimaced and shifted against the rough stone at his back. "Why did you save me? Why not go back to Shuiyuntian with your Lord Changheng?"
Her lips parted soundlessly, peach blossom eyes softening. Her slender wrist wilted in his grasp.
Suddenly it didn't matter. Despite everything, she had turned away from the perfect opportunity to return to her former home, pardoned and beloved.
She had chosen him instead.
He drew her into his arms. She'd chosen him. Something fluttered in his stomach. His ribs felt too tight for his pounding heart.
His lips met hers for the simple joy of touching her.
He felt the lightning charge on the nape of his neck a bare instant before the veils of aurora parted around the wrath of heaven.
It was only Lord Yunzhong, this time. But Lord Yunzhong was enough.
Qingcang tried to swing Xiao Lanhua around behind him. For a dizzy heartbeat he was weightless. Then rough gravel dug into his cheek. The river roared in his ears.
"You ungrateful wretch," an imperious voice snapped. "Step aside, or I'll finish what your master started and uproot you completely."
"No." His foolish little orchid's voice was devastatingly firm.
The air crackled. She cried out. His arm burned with her pain.
"Last chance," Lord Yunzhong warned. "I am willing to overlook this for my brother's sake. But his infatuation will only protect you so far."
Qingcang reached deep into himself, to his core carved empty and filled with azure flame. There was so much there now, so many feelings jumbling together. There was hardly space or fuel for his hellfire anymore. With a roar of effort he filled his palm and flung the fire forward.
Lord Yunzhong hissed. Good. Good that he could still count on this when it mattered most.
Lightning stilettoed across his shoulders and chest. He and Xiao Lanhua screamed together – who had Lord Yunzhong actually attacked? –
Voices clamored from the treeline. Shangque and Jieli. Yunzhong laughed. Qingcang felt abruptly queasy.
The laugh dissolved into curses as Shangque assumed his true form. Qingcang couldn't really see – his eyes had glued themselves shut again, somehow – but the reptile smell and rush of air displaced by a suddenly massive body were impossible to miss.
His lieutenant's roar shook the ground beneath him.
Another burst of lightning. Xiao Lanhua crying in protest. The subtler rush of air filling a space no longer occupied.
He needed to stay awake, to figure out what was happening and help his precious orchid. She had sounded indignant and frightened. But now Jieli was yelling something after Shangque, and two sets of hands were touching him but neither of them was Xiao Lanhua, and he was too fucking tired to fight anymore…

Things that would have been cool:
-> Danyin saying "Sure, no problem, I have his number" (or something) when her father said Dongfang Qingcang was the only one capable of stopping Ronghao, then asking for help
-> The Cangyan army chanting for their Moon Queen after the (hearthwrenching) final battle is over. Lord Yunzhong's face would be PRICELESS.

For starters, seeing the title "Love between Fairy and Devil" will definitely let you say and think that it's a love story between a Fairy and an Evil Lord yada yada yada. But as you watched and understood the story as a whole, it conveys more than just the love story of the two protagonists. Remember how the war between the two realms and tribes started because of love that became hate and betrayal? The war also ended because of two star-crossed lovers who sacrificed everything for each other and thus proves how they both love and trust each other amidst the obstacles and the people around them trying to stop them from loving each other... and the fate that tries to break them apart. It started with love and ended with love.
Love between Fairy and Devil also shows how love has its own forms and ways. Love forms to friendship (Xiao Lanhua to Jieli, Shangque to Dongfang Qingcang, Dongfang Qingcang to Changheng, Changheng to Ronghao, Changheng to Danyin), to family (Xunfeng to Dongfang Qingcang, Danyin to Jieli), to leadership (Dongfang Qingcang towards the Moon Tribe, Xiao Lanhua/ Goddess Xi Yun towards the three realms), to your master (Xiao Lanhua to Lord Arbiter, Ronghao to Chidi Woman), and loving and finding yourself (Changheng). It shows how love is beautiful in different ways.
"Cang Lan Jue" literally meant "Parting between the Orchid and Cang" (some translations of the actual title includes Parting of Orchid and Cang / The Farewell of Canglan)in the novel and the drama never failed to show this one. Both Xiao Lanhua and Dongfang Qingcang parted ways for the decisions that they made and the fates that they defied. But even though they parted, they still found their ways to come back to each other. Proving that their love will never be dictated by fate. It'll find its way and they will not part anymore.
