Love of my Life
Heyy guyss!! It's been long. This is the next chapter. If you missed the previous one, it's right below this one XD Enjoyyy!!
Miserable
Link called Jo, his best friend and present drinking buddy for some company. As the saying goes misery loves company. Link thought angrily, But I don't like misery! He was having a hard time trying to process the events of the day. What happened so suddenly? What drove her to leave me? Like I said, that woman is a mystery!
Since Jo was down with the flu, she forced Alex to keep Link company as she didn't want her best friend to suffer alone. She knew how hurt he was as he had gradually started falling for Amelia. I need to talk to her. I know she must've had her own reasons but still. That man is my childhood friend. I can't see him so hurt. Argghh.
At Joe's Bar, Link was seated at a secluded booth in the corner with Alex venting out his feelings. He was listening to the man intently trying to comprehend what to say to make him feel better. I'm married to a very manipulative woman! She always makes me do these things. What shall I do now? As far as he knew Amelia, he knew she'd come around. You just had to give her some space. She had already been through enough.
" I think Amelia dumped me," Link said with sadness hitched in his voice, sipping his drink.
" Wait. You think ? ", Alex wanted to laugh at the situation. " What does that even mean?", he said whilst chuckling.
Link was not at all surprised by the other man's reaction. He knew how Alex was. He always found comedy in every situation. He felt like laughing along with him given his current situation. " I'm not exactly sure," he said uncertainly. " Forget it. You say. What I heard, is it true? About you getting fired along with Richard and Meredith? ", Link asked inquisitively.
Alex just rolled his eyes, silently nodding with a scowl. Link took that as an affirmation.
Link grimaced, " What did you do, man? I mean, all three of you got fired." Link had a hint of mirth in his eyes.
         " Ahh, it was not a big deal. Mer just did something crappy and Webber and I were just the partners in crime," Alex tries to be diplomatic but a slight raise of Link's left eyebrow prompted him to spill the truth. " Okay fine. Mer just had to go and try to impersonate  Mother Teresa and obviously she committed insurance fraud. We just seemed to know about it and didn't report her considering she's my person," Alex shrugged. " Byt some son of a bitch found out and spilled his guts out to Bailey. You know how Bailey gets. She hulked out and fired all of us in front of Mama Avery", he said with simple shrug.
Link's eyes bulged out. Is this thing normal for him? How is he so casual? Weird. Jo surely met her match. Link all but shook his head in disbelief and started laughing suddenly. Alex gave him a strange look before joining him laughing at the ridiculousness of their situation. They hung out for two more hours at the bar, drinking and talking before bidding farewell.
Link was feeling miserable and alone. This was the first night in a long time that he didn't spend with Amelia. He missed her already and hadn't even been a day! He knew he was entering dangerous territory before falling for her. Now that the damage was already done, he was feeling helpless. He tried to go off to sleep but couldn't. He lay on his bed staring at the ceiling before exhaustion and alcohol took their effect.
           He didn't know how to act around Amelia when he'd come across her so he resorted to what best suited him to do. He avoided her. He made sure they were never in the same room or even the same hallway. If he saw her coming out of a patient's room in the hallway, he would sharply turn 180 degrees and move in the opposite direction before she saw him. He knew Amelia's shift timings and when she'd be at the coffee cart. So he always ordered his coffee at a completely different timing at the cart just to not cross paths with her. He just hoped she wouldn't notice him. He even paged Koracick whenever he needed a neuro consult. He prayed to God like hell that Koracick was not busy at the time so that Amelia would not answer his page.
He just didn't understand this one thing though. Why does she keep calling and texting me? She even asks people around about my whereabouts. She broke up with me. So why this now? He ignored her texts and calls. It had been a whole week. It was getting unbearable for Link. He just couldn't shake this feeling of loneliness away. Obviously Jo kept him company as soon as she recovered from the flu. She tried her best to cheer him up. She brought him doughnuts and soup from his favourite place to his apartment almost everyday. But nothing seemed to work. Even Nico tried cheering him up by bringing extremely interesting ortho cases. Knowing his fellow, this was as far as he could go to cheer him up. He even went out of his way to invite him for drinks but he quickly declined as he was just not in the mood.
He knew what he wanted. What he needed. AMELIA. But that option was not available. He should often find himself lingering outside her lab or office just staring at her. He terribly missed her and longed her touch. He would stand outside and look her way. He would stare at her face just get a small glimpse of her ocean blue eyes. Her nose. Her lips. He just wanted to grab her and smash his lips with hers. As soon as these thoughts plagued his mind, he would leave quickly. People around him were starting to get worried for him. He knew this but he just couldn't figure out how to tell them that he was okay and didn't need them to get concerned.
He tried to ask how Amelia was doing from Maggie when he had a surgery scheduled with her. Maggie just looked at him sympathetically and gave him a small answer. " You need to ask Amelia that herself. Don't avoid her please. She's not accustomed with being on this end of the avoidance game generally. She's having a hard time, Link. You should please talk to her." He listened to her with a guarded expression trying to comprehend the piece of information. She's miserable too? Just like me? Shall I talk to her? Will she take me back? He quickly shook his head to rid himself of these thoughts. NO. I WON'T approach her. She broke up with me. She hurt me. She has to come to me. I'm a human too. Arrgh. It's all so complicated.
Meanwhile with Amelia, she was completely in shock. She was at a standstill. Where the hell is Link? He's neither picking up my calls nor answering my texts. Why is he avoiding me ??!! I know I told him I needed time but that didn't mean I broke up with him, damn it. I just meant we needed to go slow. Ugghh. MEN!! They are so crazy sometimes. Ughh I'll strangle him the next time I see him, provided I see him at all!!! What the hell?
           Amelia knew what he was trying to do. Does he really think he'd be able to beat me at my own game? I'm an expert in the avoidance game. He won't be able to avoid me for long. And seriously he thinks I haven't spotted him running away from me or him hiding in the on-call room the second he sees me? I have seen him every single time! I just don't understand why he's doing this.  Amelia knew things would get awkward between them for a while after their talk but not this awkward.
She tried convincing herself of the otherwise but quickly gave up. She couldn't help but miss him terribly. She got attached him to an indescribable level. He had become a part of her routine. Her day was never complete without seeing him. She missed his touch. His smile. His eyes. His kiss. Oh, his kiss! She felt crying at the mere thought of him. She had never felt like this with anyone in her entire life. She was a completely different person around him. Like Meredith used to say, her demeanor took a 180 degree turn from dark and twisty to bright and shiny in Link's company. She was liking this change. He was good for her. IS. Is good for her.
              She desperately tried approaching him but always stopped in her tracks. What would she say to him? How would she console him? She knew for a fact that she would jump his bones if he even came at a 5 foot radius near her. She craved his touch, his body. He was the best that she had ever had. She loved the way he always held her, stroked her hair and peppered his face with kisses after the amazing,  amazing sex. There was a certain level of gentleness with him that she never knew she was capable of having. Her mind had started picturing him in her future. That's why she had needed some space before she went all in which she was pretty sure she was.
Amelia had tried talking to Jo about Link but she avoided the topic and refused to divulge any information she had of him. She was getting horribly frustrated. What is the matter with everyone around here?! In this whole madness there was no one she could talk to. Meredith, Alex and Richard were fired. Ohhh, now I get it. So that's why they weren't answering my page to the on-call room. And how stupid of them! She just couldn't even contemplate how poorly this situation was handled. Even Bailey acted out of rage and lost all her logic. Had it been me...ooh,I'm getting off the topic. Back toh the matter at hand, Tom is dealing with a breakup too. I warned him. He should've listened to me about Teddy being Owen's tumor. It was just inevitable. People should listen to me more. Definitely the smartest sister I am of the Lady Chief Trifecta. Huh. Owen just had a baby and he was definitely not an option. She desperately wanted to talk to Maggie. She was her favourite human being apart from a few more. But even Maggie was unavailable. She was dealing with her own breakup with Jackson. That was another man she wanted to strangle. That asshole! How could he treat my sister...my SISTER like that??!!
            Men and their beautiful minds! She was done with this gender now. Bunch of assholes. Stupid, brainless, pathetic creatures. She noticed that she was cursing a lot nowadays. It's all Link's fault. It's his fault I'm angry all the time. His fault I'm so aggressive. And definitely his fault I'm so damn horny! She just knew one thing. Men were a bunch of idiots. She thought about calling her ex-resident and dear friend Stephanie but she was currently in Italy and she didn't want to disrupt her "world tour".
Her sharp mind was quick to notice that she was not getting paged for any ortho cases since the past week. How weird, isn't it? Of course, thought indignantly. The only ortho consult she was getting was of the Jai who was heroically saved by his wife. It was also kinda the only opportunity she was getting of seeing Link. She noticed that he was withdrawn and somewhat cold (?) whenever she entered Jai's room to examine him.
             There was absolutely no interaction between the two and it left a bitter taste in her mouth. It just didn't suit well with Amelia. And Link too.
He buried himself in work trying to cope with the sadness. He was fully invested in his recent patient, Jai. He came in in horrible shape. He had to perform at least three surgeries on him in a span of four days. He even thought that the best way for Jai to survive was if he amputated his leg. Not to sound smug or anything, he was as usual a miracle worker and saved his leg. His wife was in pretty bad shape too. He arm was completely shredded and it had taken him a few hours to fix the damage. He had his hands full with these two. They were priving to be a good distraction for him. But it was not enough. Whenever he was not with his patients, he was thinking about Amelia.
God was not at all in his side. The neurosurgeon on Jai's case was of course none other than Amelia. It was torturous for him to be in the same room as her for extended periods of time without doing the things that he wanted to do to her in their present situation. He had a hard time keeping his distance in the patient room but was thankful that Javkson and Nico were there with him on the case. Till now, he hadn't had any surgery with her which he was extremely thankful for. It would be disastrous, he was pretty sure.
Amelia on the other hand tried to cope with grief in the only way she knew apart from crying, dark, dark humor. Her colleagues were pretty disturbed by the comments she was making but they had to agree, it they were pretty funny! She kept making jokes and made fun of the situations. I'm weirdly behaving like Alex. Bleh. Not my finest moments at all.
             Amelia just wanted to clear the misunderstanding with Link. If only he wouldn't run for the hills at the mere sight of me! She only needed two minutes with him to make everything better. Of course, they weren't getting any chance to even get locked up in an OR for extended period of time, all thanks to LINK !! Just this once she wanted some divine intervention to make everything better but it was futile. Now that she wanted Almighty God to listen, He was actively ignoring me. What is it with people ignoring me? Even God is ignoring me. Wow. Great. Just great. What the hell, man? Is this how people feel when I am the one doing all the ignoring? It's a horrible feeling indeed, she chuckled darkly.
Her prayers were finally answered after the whole week had passed when Jai needed a nerve graft repair which required the assistance of all the lead surgeons on the case, Avery, Link and Amelia. Of course, Nico would be there too as he was Link's fellow. Not that it mattered to Amelia who was there with Link and her in the OR. She was simply glad that she finally got the opportunity to spend time with Link in a locked OR where he couldn't evade from her clutches and clear all the stupid misunderstandings he had in his stupid mind. Amelia looked up and smiled. She sent a small silent Thank You to whoever it was above who loved playing tricks with her and interfering in her business. But this time she was actually happy with the interference, she laughed silently.
As soon as the OR board was updated and their names were written on the board, there were quite different reactions arising out of the surgeons on Jai's case.
Amelia...YESSS!!!
Link...NOOOO!!!
Nico...SHITT!!! WHY ME ??!!
        (He was obviously aware about their situation and knew how cold the situation in the OR was going to get.)
Jackson...HUH?  Cool surgery. But why do these people have weird looks on their face?
The surgery proved to be quite interesting and entertaining for everybody involved, that's for sure.
Author's Note:
Heyyy guys!! First of all, I just want to apologize to all the male readers. I'm so so soooo sorry for badmouthing MEN !! 🙈😂 It was just how I thought Amelia would think. Again, I'm really sorry. But people have to agree with me here, men do act pretty stupid some of the times. Hahahaha.
By the way, some people will be glad to know that this chapter was not that long. I just couldn't write sad AmeLink. Sad AmeLink is not my cup of tea.😅
Anyway, do comment. I would love to hear your thoughts about the chapter! And thank you to all my readers for showering my story with love! ❤
We'll see happy AmeLink for many more chapters to come! Yayyy. Until then.

Monday: A Full Day in Zagreb
So, let me start off with a few observations about Zagreb. Overall, it is pretty interesting going anywhere after visiting insanely clean Scandinavian cities.  Because of the wealth of those countries and their robust social infrastructure programs, and the money available for city projects (I would imagine), and just habits formed by the people in those nations as pushed byt heir governments (such as about recycling), you don’t see a lot of garbage on the  streets or graffiti on buildings in the Scandinavian metropolises.  Of course, there is some graffiti (oh! And I forgot to mention, about street art: the unauthorized Banksy museum, which I read about, is in Gothenburg of all places, right off the central square, and we walked right past it), but it is pretty minimal. Now, Zabreb, on the other hand, has a lot of graffiti, some of it more finessed and intended to be public art, but other graffiti is just tagging.  There was, in fact, a wall of graffiti on our Airbnb building.  Also, as we noticed in the Baltics, the exteriors of a lot of medium-rise (like 10-story) buildings have some, how shall we say, “deferred maintenance.”  They look sort of shabby on the outside, but as we learned in Vilnius, most strongly, a place can look really run-down from the outside but be really, really spruced up and fancy on the inside.  I wondered whether this was the case in Zagreb, but I didn’t get to find out.  Our Airbnb was a two-story square, contemporary house, basically, that had been broken up into several apartments.  Ours was on the first floor. We also noticed, walking around in the afternoon (which I will detail below), that people are very social.  There is also a lot of smoking going on still.  Everywhere you go, if there is a relatively tall building, it has an outdoor seating area outside, and you will often see groups of 3 or 4 older men, sitting there, drinking coffee, hard liquor, or beer, and just chatting away.  It seems very “old world,” like I imagine my Great-Grandpa Julius (who I never met) doing in New York in the ‘40s and ‘50s with other men who spoke Yiddish. I don’t know if he did, because from what I have heard he just spent his days in the front of the sign shop, reading the Forward, but it seems like it is that kind of older guy who sits with a group of pals and talks the afternoon away at these sidewalk cafes.
Anyway, enough observations. When we got in on Sunday night, the host met us and showed us the ins-and-outs of the place (not much to figure out). This is an apartment that is only used as an Airbnb; it is not anyone’s home (I prefer Airbnbs that are people’s homes). But, this place was really clean, with nice beds, and everything we needed in the kitchen (with another sandwich maker! I am beginning to think I might need Santa to bring me a panini press).
I went to bed too late, as always, and the kids got to bed pretty late on Sunday night because of our jaunt to Badovinci, as I mentioned.  When they woke up Monday morning, Eric had yogurts for them, which he bought the night before during his jaunt to the 24-hour store, which was not a proper grocery but more of a “party store,” as Michiganders say.  But there was a really nice bakery next store to that, also open 24 hours, so Eric got some bread and weird seeded pastries, as well.  So, breakfast Monday was yogurt and bread.  Rowan go the special treat of having a pistachio Greek yogurt, which I’d bought for him in Zadar, too, but Eric accidentally ate ;) So, after we had breakfast, we walked out for  a day of adventuring! Just a side note: it was very hot and humid. First off, we walked down a substantive road and passed a mirrored-glass office building, in which was housed, in part, the Finnish Embassy! Next up, we took a wrong turn and ended up not being able to go over the train tracks., but we saw a cat ambling across the street. Then, we rerouted and went under an overpass and kept on truckin’ toward the city center (“centar,” actually), and we saw a sign (actually many) for a concert by the Cure, but I didn’t make note of the day, figuring it had already passed, and lamenting that we probably couldn’t go anyway, though I’d love my kids to hear, as I did when I was 18, them play a 14-minute-long version of “A Forest.” Anyway,  first up, we visited a playground.  At the playground, there was one of those spiderweb climbing structures, so of course Rowan checked that out, but this one high the added risk factor of being able to spin, which, when it did, made it look like  a Christmas tree. There was also a merry-go-round, which Rowan took to running around really fast and then hopping on.  I remember doing that as a kid.  Cece thought he was spinning it too fast. This little park/playground also had a small pond/water-feature with a little cherub-boy statue, holding his pee-pee, aiming into the pond.  When we were there, the statue was emitting no “pee pee” into the pond, but I figured that a stream of “urine” was the intention of the cherub’s design and his proximity to the little pond.  In fact, a man was cleaning the pond when we were there.  Later, when we walked back by, after several hours, the statue was doing what it was designed to do . . . We walked down to the central plaza where the Zagreb Cathedral is.  Wow, what an amazing structure.  It is sooooooo tall and soooooo ornate. It was damaged in the early-20th century during an earthquake and then, during the Communist era, there was little interest in maintaining religious buildings.  So, since the ‘90s, there has been a lot of money spent and a lot of effort put in to repairing the Cathedral, and we saw men busily at work, way up high on one of the sides, the day we were there. We continued on from there, and Cece insisted on walking on her own, or “in your shadow,” which was a bit tricky because it was midday, so she was regularly right under my feet.  We got to another playground, in a really big park (basically behind the church, but we’d gone around several blocks to get there), and it was full of huge trees, most memorably some beautiful weeping willows.  There was also some lack of maintenance at the park, as it appears that lots of people might use it as a place to sit and drink beer, but the playground was a perfect spot for the kids to do some “circuits,” which they did: running up the slides, climbing up the sliding pole (Rowan did this, as it happens to be one of his favorite things to do), walking across the wobbly rope bridge, across every other piece of equipment, a few swings on the swings, with lots of running from piece of equipment to piece of equipment. By this point, we were definitely hungry for lunch, so we walked on, and we had a few spots identified, via Google, as possible targets for lunch, but before we got to any, we saw place that I believe was actually called “Good Food,” and it looked like the kind of yuppie-ish, salad-and-juice oriented place that might just suit us. Sure enough, it was very on-target.  You could take a piece of paper with all kinds of salad ingredients listed on it, and tick the boxes for the items you wanted.  Eric and I did this, and so did Rowan!  Cece chose a sandwich.  Rowan’s salad was pretty funny, in that it had no lettuce, but lots of other good ingredients (like red pepper, broccoli, and garbanzo beans) and then something sweet: dried cranberries.  We also got a juice called “Hollywood Glow,” which had oranges, apples, and I can’t remember what the third ingredient was.  Eric and I both “tested” it, and then the kids finished it off in one turn each. Neither Rowan nor I could finish all the salad we ordered, so we took them to go and walked back toward our Airbnb, because I needed to be on a call at 3 p.m. As we walked, we went down the central shopping street, which I enjoyed seeing (and I popped into a Benetton, because they always have a piece of my heart), and the kids found a sort of nautical-themed playscape in the plaza, and played there for a good 15 minutes. We got home and I had fifteen minutes to spare before my call, and I got a fighting Cece down for nap, and she was *exhausted* -- she made not a single peep after I closed the door to her room and she slept well until I woke her up at 4:15. We were going to go to the zoo next! We drove to the zoo, because, a) we figured we’d put our Peugeot through even more city-driving paces, and b) it was too far to go by foot and we didn’t want to bother to figure out the trams.  We got to the zoo around 4:30, and, unlike our Albuquerque Zoo (and I believe many other zoos), they did not close at 5 p.m.!  In Albuquerque, the zoo closes at that hour all year, I guess to keep things consistent for the animals and to give them a good break from the human visitors.   But, the Zagreb Zoo in the summertime is open until 8 p.m. It was such a nice zoo! Pretty much right away, we went into the reptile and snake habitat building, and we ended up learning that if you ducked around a corner behind one of the enclosures, you went into a network of other indoor exhibits, for all kinds of animals! Maybe because I skip the snake exhibit at the Albuquerque Zoo pretty often so I am not sure how many snakes and lizards and the like we have in Albuquerque to use as comparison, this zoo seemed to have *a lot* -- and they had a young crocodile and its mom, and the young guy was just lying on his mom’s back the whole time, occasionally moving one arm. We left the snake-oriented building and continued on to see critters that are more to my taste.  They had red pandas, zebras, three female lions and a male lion – and they were pretty active!, some huge birds, lemurs, lots of monkeys and orangutans, a petting zoo with some eager goats, and a very fun sea lion exhibit, which looked like it had a mommy and daddy sea lion with their baby, who was still a nursling.  That exhibit was very popular with the zoo visitors, and the sea lions made it worth our wait!  The two adults were playing with and prodding each other – one from the water and the other up on a catwalk.  The big one in the water swooped up and snapped/barked at the one on the catwalk, and when it had had enough of that, it dove into the water and they chased each other around, zooming like crazy through the water for a while! They were fun to watch. We got ice cream, went to the play area, and then, finally, when the mosquitos were coming out in the evening, we decided to leave, as it was about closing time anyway.  The zoo was like $8 for all of us! It was a really pretty zoo, and they had some multi-animal enclosures, where animals who I guess get along together got to be together in their habitats there. We drove back to the Airbnb and I noticed, from that vantage, that a huge building right across from the zoo was a stadium for Dynamo, which is a very popular Croatian soccer team.  That was cool to see! They even sold some Dynamo gear at the zoo gift shop. We got back to our Airbnb  at about 8:30 and then we had our leftovers and grilled cheese sandwiches and then, as always happens, the kids became totally unhinged wild creatures (as if taking inspiration from some of the friends they visited at the zoo) before bedtime.  This happens soooo often and by the time they finally relent and go to sleep, I am at my wit’s end.  They were asleep by 9:30, thank heavens, after Eric read them a chapter out of the 7th book in the Moominvalley series, which we’ve been making our way through over the last year or so, as we sprinkle it in with more books that Rowan can read some of himself.   Eric has been really good about working on this trip with Rowan on his “keys,” – a ring of flash cards his teacher made for all of the kids at Kindergarten during the year. He is getting them!  Reading isn’t his strongest school area, but we’re working on it and we’re super impressed by his progress. After the kids went to bed, Eric and I got our things organized for leaving the next morning which, I was glad to learn, was a later departure than I had thought! Woohoo! In my next post, I will regale you all with stories of our last Zagreb morning, our flight from Zagreb to London, and our afternoon in London.  After that is our big push back home – three flights: London to New York, New York to Dallas, and Dallas to ABQ, all in one day.  We’ll all sure be tired after that series!

You have no idea how much it means to me to get so many kind and supportive responses to my writing. It's really boosted my confidence in my own writing and kept me motivated. So from the sincerest bottom of my heart, thank you everyone see much for all your engagement and support!
Now to finish off this week this prompt is actually a continuation of yesterday's theme "Wash the rat"! (link) So be sure to check that out and as always, I hope you enjoy!
You can read my story under the cut or you can read it over on my AO3 if you like!
((Also don't forget this weekend doesn't have to end here! Send me any and all your Symmrat requests until the 22nd and I'll be happy to write them!))
When the day of the Gala finally arrived Satya found herself both looking forwards to and dreading the event. On one hand, if the whole ordeal went smoothly the press would eat it up and they’d continue to be seen as heroes in the world’s eyes. On the other hand though despite tonight being for them they would have to do a lot of what Junkrat had eloquently put “kissing all them crazy-rich suites’ asses” for the evening, something Satya had plenty of experience with but many members of Overwatch didn’t. It’s what had to be done however if Overwatch wished to remain legal and adequately funded.
She still worried as she got dressed for the evening. She had decided to go with a lilac gown that was embellished with gold embroidered shapes and patterns. By a happy surprise it complemented the gold sparkles that were still stuck on her skin from the bath bombs yesterday. She also aligned her make-up with the dress and bombs with tiny accents of gold blended into her eyes and lips. And she pulled her back into a long sweeping braid that was simple yet elegant as it fell off her shoulder.
And while physically she was ready, emotionally she wasn’t quite sure. Regardless though the team would be preparing to leave in an hour. Outside her room she could her Hana, Lena and Mei shouting down the hall as they complimented one another so she could assume they were ready early as well. She took one last look at herself in the mirror, making sure every aspect of her appearance was perfect and stepped out of her room to join them.
“Oh my Symmetra!” Tracer called out as soon as she stepped out of her room. “Just look at you! You look lovely!”
“Thank you, and I the same goes for you two as well.” She said smiling. They both looked stunning, especially Satya had never seen either wearing anything besides their normal suites before.
“So are you all ready for tonight?” Hana asked grinning ear to ear.
“I’d certainly hope so. It’s in an hour.” Mei said managing to be chastising in such a friendly tone. She turned to Satya as Hana started listing off everything she wished to do at the Gala. “And your Junkrat will be ready by then, Yes?”
“I’d certainly hope so.” Satya mimicked teasingly.
She tried to keep a light, happy attitude while her stomach churned. Usually when someone was excited they were said to have butterflies in their stomach but Satya only felt like there was a heavy stone weighing down on her insides. Everything had to be perfect, to ensure Overwatch’s safety. But if her experience on the team had shown her anything it was that Overwatch and the people in it were anything but…
~~~
Satya felt like she was slowly having a nervous breakdown. The team had all come here separately and Satya had been one of the last to arrive. As soon as she stepped out of her ride several reporters were in her face and an assistance was ushering her to go talk to the mayor of the city. It was chaotic ad she could already feel pressure begin settling on her shoulders. But she still had to keep a level head and hold a legible conversation with three different reporters at the same time. And that was just entering the Gala!
It got a bit easier once the reporters were satisfied with her quotes and let her be. And all the cameras were left outside the entrance so once inside the ballroom she began to feel much better without so many cameras and eyes focused on her like she was a bug. The Mayor even turned out to be an amiable fellow who had been fascinated with the science and art of hard-light.
But once she was finally left to her own devices that pressure fell back onto her. In one corner by a bar Lena sat with her girlfriend and a whole troop of piolets surrounding them. They were all laughing loudly, loud enough to draw attention and scowls from some of the ball-attendees and Satya feared what might happen if they actually all got drunk. Hana had her own army of fans following her around as well. She could see a few boys actually threaten to fight each other to get a dance with her. Many members of Overwatch had people following them about Satya realized, like baby ducks imprinting on a leader. And each group looked like they were just on the cusp of becoming unruly. To make matters worse it seemed like more and more people were streaming into the party byt the minute. Now even being near the center of the room there were people brushing elbows with her. Honestly, they really should have held this Gala at a larger venue, this was ridiculous!
And to make matters worse she couldn’t seem to find Junkrat anywhere. Unlike everyone else she couldn’t find any sort of group following her boyfriend nor any other trace of him. She tried straining her ears over the obnoxiously loud smooth jazz but she still couldn’t hear his familiar crow nor his cackle.
She really hoped he was here, but what if he wasn’t? The thought disappointed her but she could still understand it. All while practicing throughout this week Junkrat kept saying things like he wasn’t “cut-out for this sorta shit”. But he had been putting forth so much effort to learn everything, he’d even taken a bath for goodness sake. Never in their entire time of knowing have one another had he ever taken a complete, submerging himself in actual water, bath! Junkrat had really done a lot to prepare for tonight. She’d really hoped to see him put his practice into action.
She was about to go back near the entrance and ask if her boyfriend had come in when someone suddenly stepped into her pathway and almost ran into them. They were too tall to see their face in such a dense crowd.
“My apologies.” Satya said, horrified of what might of happened if she had actually run into the man.
“No apologies necessary darl!”
Satya stopped dead in her tracks and looked closer at the tux, she immediately recognized the size and cut and those blue and purple accents. And she looked up she saw none other than Jamison “Junkrat” Fawkes. He had been standing so tall she somehow hadn’t even recognized him!
“ ‘Bout time you saw me! Passed by two times already!” He said giggle a little.
A man violently cleared his throat and glared at both of them. “I can see when I’m unneeded. You two have a nice night.” He said with an acidic tone before snapping around and walking away with a huff.
“Fucking cunt.” Junkrat muttered watching the man leave. “Didn’t even know who I was but as soon as I mentioned the big O.W. then suddenly the guy wouldn’t leave me alone! I had no idea what the hell he was talking about most the time. I just kept fake laughing and prayed he’d leave me alone.”
“Hopefully he didn’t say anything important.”
“Eh I doubt it, all these suits say the same things over’n’over.” Jamison said brushing off Satya’s concern.
Satya couldn’t help but smile and elbow his side. “I’d watch what I say if I were you, Junkrat. Look who else here is wearing a suit?”
“Hey hey hey! This ain’t a suit, it’s a tux! And it’s just for tonight so I’m good!”
Satya was about to comment back when several people shoved into her from behind, almost making her loose her footing and crash into Jamison. They didn’t even apologize as they forced their way through the crowd. Suddenly the small space that had been doable while talking to Jamison felt too chaotic, too claustrophobic to Satya. There were too many people. Everywhere. She felt overwhelmed. She could barely think.
“Hey darl! How’bout we take this outside? I cans see a door way over there.” Satya couldn’t see where he pointed too but she took his hand as he lead them out of the terrible, overheated crowed and over toward a set of cool glass doors.
Outside there was a small balcony overlooking the cityscape. Trails of lights lit up the area and a bar table covered in drinks stood by the entrance. A few couples and groups milled about the space but compared to inside the ballroom this balcony was a beautiful ghost town. Satya felt like she could breathe again out here.
Junkrat looked down at her and she could she how worry pinched his face. “You feeling better ‘Metra?”
“Yes actually.” Satya answered still focusing on breathing steadily.
Junkrat gave a low whistle as they stepped towards the edge. “Hooly-dooly ain’t that a pretty view!”
He seemed entranced by the sight and leaned further over the ledge to take everything in. Satya noticed how his face glimmered as lights reflected off of him.
“The glitter, you’re still wearing it?” Satya asked.
Junkrat laughed before scratching at his neck. “Oh believe me, you ain’t the first to notice. Tried scrubbing the stuff off but I could never get it all. So decided screw it, looked good on me anyways. When I got here all those blokes with cameras went completely bonkers! They wouldn’t get outta me face. Hog actually had to shove some of the away from me! They kept asking if I was making a ‘statement’. Like the fuck does that means?”
“I believe that would be referring to a fashion statement.” Satya explained. When Junkrat gave her a questioning look she decided to elaborate. “Celebrities will often wear outlandish things as a way of promoting idea or being rebellious. But most often it’s simply an attempt at gaining quick attention.”
Junkrat looked confused at first but then suddenly went into a giggling fit. “Oh well that certainly does the trick! Can’t imagine what sorta ‘statement’ all them blokes thought I was making! They act like that toward ya too?”
“Huh?”
“Cause you’re still coated in this shit too!”
Satya looked down at her arm and sure enough there were still an array of sparkles sitting on her skin like freckles. From all the stress of tonight she had completely forgotten about them. “No I don’t believe so.”
“So it was just me then? Making such rebellious fashion statements?
“Perhaps since you are a male they considered it so, as such styles would be considered unusual by some.”
“Oh really? Ugh, city wankers sure are wild! Sparkles is what makes the front page for’em!” He shook his head and peals of laughter started spilling out of him.
“I believe so.” Satya said, unable to stop the smile on her face. Junkrat could be downright infectious sometimes. And with the subject at hand she couldn’t agree more.
“Oh-ho I see how it is!” Junkrat giggled as he gestured to himself “Show up at a party all sooty and people call you a miscreant but show up coated in glitter and everyone says you’re making a fucking fashion statement? That’s how it works? Ain’t that calling the kettle black!”
“Or gold in this case, I believe.” Satya couldn’t help but grin when that made Junkrat cackle harder.
When he calmed back down he sighed and leaned up against the balcony. “Ugh, city wankers always got all these contradictions. Don’t think I’ll ever figure it all out!”
“I won’t even try to defend that.” Satya said regaining her composer. “I remember when Vishkar first began training me there were so many unsaid social rules that everyone just expected you to know. Like maintaining eye contact and not saying what immediately came to mind. It’s a wonder sometimes that I made it through school at all! … But I guess I was alright in the end.”
“Well if you ask me, you turned at much better than just alright.” Junkrat said, pushing off the balcony and stepping closer towards Satya. He lifted a hand and held it open palmed towards her. And she took the hand gently.
“If you ask me you turned out utterly brilliant…” He said slowly pulling her closer.
“As are you.”
“Aw sure.” Junkrat snorted and looked away as she said that.
“No. I mean it.”
Satya gently lifted a hand to pull his gaze back towards her’s. And for a moment their eyes locked, one fire enchanted to another. Then moving slowly she lifted up her head and tried to capture his lips with her own. It was a soft kiss, only pressing their lips together. The sort of kisses that had occurred at the beginning of their relationship. But every tender thought and feeling going through Symmetra’s head she was transmitting out into that kiss. As Jamison leant in closer and reciprocated the kiss and deepened it she hoped that her message was being received.
Satya didn’t know how much time had passed but eventually they both separated and breathed on their own.
Junkrat seemed dazed, just looking at Satya. It was the stillest she had ever seen the man, standing so stock-still and wide eyes focused solely on her. But suddenly a loud cheer from the crowd inside snapped Junkrat out of whatever thoughts were going through his head. And like that he burst back to life as the sparatic man she recognized.
“Shit! Forgot about the drinks! You want a drink? Cause I could use one about now.”
“I would enjoy a drink, yes.” Satya said trying not to laugh too loudly and watched Jamison hurry towards the bar. He scanned over the rows of bottles before shrugging and just grabbing a bottle and two glasses and bringing it back over.
“Alright, this looks legit. Nothing too heavy.” Satya looked over the label but she didn’t recognize the name. But it seemed fancy enough to appear at a high-end party such as this.
He poured out the drink into the glasses and handed one to her. It was a reddish-pink liquid. Probably a wine of some sort. She was about to take a drink when he stopped her.
“Wait! This being such a fancy, formal event we ought to make a toast?” He said smirking.
Satya smiled back. “Yes, I believe that would be proper.”
“Roight! Then let’s see what the hell should we toast too? Overwatch? ...Not being in prison?”
Satya thought for a moment till an idea came to her. “How about… Why don’t we cheer to new beginnings?”
“I like that! Here’s to new beginnings!” Junkrat said beaming.
The glasses clinked together with a happy chime.
“Cheers!” Satya said before bringing the glass up to her lips. The drink stung her tongue lightly as she took a sip.
They spent the rest of their night away from the party and out on that balcony in peace, watching the city below them glow with electric lights and the night sky above them drew on in a vast, deep darkness.
