AUG 8th, 8pm, at Lyric Hyperion Theater in #LA, I'm doing a free performance of HOMELESS IN HOMELAND for a LIVE FILMING!!! Fundraising to cover production costs, link in bio. All donors will receive access to the edited video. Sometimes projects take longer than you imagine to become fully articulated entities. The journey is a beautiful struggle in which so much is reviewed. After a successful run of HOMELESS IN HOMELAND in England --now with a new prologue sequence touching on the central and universal themes in the narrative-- it is time to properly document the show! I am extremely proud of this piece; the interdisciplinary and documentary aesthetics, the education on Israel/Palestine conflict history, the complexity of identity politics and sexuality in relation to social justice. My creative team and the input of many in my community has been invaluable. As a result the show has deeply impacted audiences in both the USA and UK. This filming will generate new promotional material for future productions and ensure that the show can be seen when I am no longer performing it. Skilled filmmaker Hal Masonberg of Off Leash Films has agreed to shoot and edit; for this I'm super grateful. We are thrilled to have Kyle Whitehead in person for a live screening of his most recent work IMMANENT UNION. Best known for his work with small-format film, alternative photographic techniques and lo-fi electronics, Kyle’s latest 2 reeler was lovingly spliced together live over the course of six performances in Mexico, the United Kingdom and Canada.
Kyle will also be presenting a workshop entitled GENERATIVE SOUND FOR ANALOG FILM PROJECTION (details below) on Sunday October 2nd for a very limited group free of charge, first come first serve. Don't miss this outdoor show at the Fieldhouse, likely our last of the season before the rains come! IMMANENT UNION Super 8 | B+W & Colour | Sound | 2021 | 58’ | 260 Metres This Super 8 film on two reels is a retrograde attempt at resolving a personal archive and index, confronting the inexorable passage of time into memory and memory into echo. Indwelling, inherent beauty is not something imposed but something immanent; being at once within the limits of possible experience or knowledge and transcendent. The theory of immanence holds that divinity is continuously manifest in the material world. Something immanent is intrinsic and permeated through another form, it is innate and inborn. This film remains within, taking place within the mind of the subject and having no effect outside of it, constitutional of a life lived in images - of travelogues, unfinished projects, disused or discarded films and mistakes - inherent, natural and effusive. The film is performative in essence, a justification of an immanent plane as an act of pastoral simplicity. A divine presence.
GENERATIVE SOUND FOR ANALOG FILM PROJECTION Kyle Whitehead’s expanded-cinema projects IMMANENT UNION, Draft for a Scenario and Circles of Confusion all leverage different approaches for creating generative soundscapes from analogue Super 8 film projections. In this workshop he will share his strategies for creating custom electronic devices for the purpose of generating or modulating sound with light. Focusing on the use of Arduino and the powerful Mozzi synthesis library, workshop participants will learn how to build and customize their own light-controlled synthesizers to be used with projected film images, or any other light source.
Artist Bio Kyle Whitehead is Canadian artist who works primarily with small-format film to create experimental and expanded cinema projects. He prefers a careful and considered approach to image making; which should not be confused with best practices, as his work is more about embracing the potential of indeterminate process. What he wants is the definitive by chance - leveraging trailing-edge technologies often with unusual or startling effect. His films, performative work and installations have been shown internationally, with recent exhibitions at the Museo Tamayo (Mexico City, Mexico), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca (Oaxaca, Mexico), Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival (Hawick, Scotland), the Canadian Film Institute’s Café EX (Ottawa, Canada), and TRUCK Contemporary Art (Calgary, Canada). In addition to his art practice Kyle is a former arts administrator, co-founder of Particle + Wave Media Arts Festival, and curates MONOGRAPH, an ongoing series of experimental film programs in Southern Alberta, where he currently resides.
