#15 The Wedding Party - Lin Xinwu | China | historical fiction | 399 pages
On a December morning in 1982, the courtyard of a Beijing siheyuan—a lively quadrangle of homes—begins to stir. Auntie Xue’s son Jiyue is getting married today, and she is determined to make the day a triumph. Despite Jiyue’s woeful ignorance in matters of the heart—and the body. Despite a chef in training tasked with the onerous responsibility of preparing the banquet. With a cross-generational multitude of guests, from anxious family members to a fretful bridal party—not to mention exasperating friends, interfering neighbors, and wedding crashers—what will the day ahead bring?
Set at a pivotal point after the turmoil of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Liu Xinwu’s tale weaves together a rich tapestry of characters, intertwined lives, and stories within stories. The Wedding Party is a touching, hilarious portrait of life in this singular city, all packed into a Beijing courtyard on a single day that manages to be both perfectly normal and utterly extraordinary at the same time.

Hello!
"No honestly, they act like the only way to be able to engage with Chinese works is to comprehend it only by what western story arcs and thematics are! Like what the hell, it is audaciously xenophobic and racist to deny that these works do and can be on a separate sphere of what philosophy is in other cultures. And it's just demeaning especially with how forceful they are when they post things that say anything about "being sinful" when Buddhism doesn't even have a concept close to sin! Even what are considered crimes and a rejection of dharma is the concept of a rejection of refusing the natural law of the universe which in itself is not at all comparable to the idea of the guilt usually meant to be associated with sin."
I agreed with this.
So I want to ask, do you know where can I find more about types of Chinese story arcs and thematics in various genres?(not only wuxia/xianxia)
The sin comparisons are ODD. How to explain that WWX's YLLZ actions don't really contradict him being a moral ideal?(everyone says they do...)
I also read some comments about how WWX's story arc felt unsatisfying. For me it was perfectly satisfying, but I don't know how to explain WHY.
Hello anon.
So I want to ask, do you know where can I find more about types of Chinese story arcs and thematics in various genres?(not only wuxia/xianxia)
Mmmm, depends on what sort you may want, for outside of Wuxia/Xianxia that are translated main stream to English or English Diaspora I would recommend the following:
THE WEDDING PARTY BY LIU XINWU: Auntie Xue’s son, Jiyue, is getting married in December of 1982 after the Bei Jing Revolution. Takes place in several different points of view from the groom, bride, chef and party attendants.
TO LIVE BY YU HUA: The spoiled son of a landlord, Xu Fugui, squanders his family’s entire fortune. Xu Fugui lives throughout the years spanning the revolutionary changes and japanese-sino wars of 1930s-1960's.
HERO BORN BY JIN YONG: The very first book out of 12 for Legend of the Condors and from one of the most well known wuxia writers from when the genre took off in the 1950's
I LIVE IN THE SLUMS BY CAN XUE: Collection of short stories from different character perspectives about urban life that approaches chinese life and tradition from what is considered radical than the norm
THE RADIANT EMPEROR DUALOGY BY SHELLEY PARK-CHAN: Historical fantasy of 14th century China, the mandate of heaven is a literal flame granted to the next emperor. Two children, Zhu Chongba and Ouyang become embroiled within the political backdrop of the Ming dynasty and touches on heavy themes of gender identity and sexuality.
As for the idea Wei Wuxian's story arc was unsatisfying, don't know what to say, most xianxia and wuxia protagonists/heroes do get their happy ends unless it is meant to be tragic, but these usually as a genre are not meant to be tragic endings for the leads. It's kind of like expecting Lord of The Rings to be tragic in end for Frodo who was left to his own peace by leaving Middle Earth. Sometimes you'll be personally unhappy with a arc end. This does not mean execution of storytelling was lacking or weak on author part. If it cleanly and thematically reflects that end, it's a personal problem unfortunately and not a work or genre for you perhaps.
These are not written with the concept of sin or the traditional idea of redemption exposed to within western texts. Doaist Buddhism is not on the same philosophical standing as Christian redemption or tellings. Samsara are able to be a complete new start, Sin does not follow in after life or new life within samsara cycles, the point is that you can always remove the self from the suffering of human vice and obsession to ascend above what humanity is.

January ~ April Reading Review
Rounding up what I read in the first months of 2023!
Favorites in Comics, Fiction, and Nonfiction:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Comics
Tumblr media
The Karman Line
by Mitsuhashi Kotaro
Reading this comic was like being suffused in the calm, blue hour of evening. The deep blue ink was an amazing choice. One of my favorite comics of the year so far! Mitsuhashi is a graphic designer and his compositions and design sense certainly have the unique approach he’d strived for. I wish I could read the student manga magazine these were originally published in.
Tumblr media
Yowamushi Pedal & Yowamushi Pedal SPARE BIKE by Watanabe Wataru (scanlated the SPARE BIKE chapter with my sister…)
So fun, drew this a lot. I love sports manga! I really appreciate the art style for its whimsy and am in awe of his speed (from his Manben episode…)
Natsume’s Book of Friends vol. 25 & 26 by Yuki Midorikawa
Drawing this incessantly lol. I’ve liked it for a long time but I think now I can really appreciate the art style of the manga more. Kind of fits the theme of episodic shorts with a through-line about supernatural beings (like The Cabinet, Where the Wild Ladies Are, which are my fiction picks below)
Tumblr media
Not All Girls Are Stupid by Minami Q-ta
I don’t particularly like her story telling about romance lol and definitely prefer Pop Life but her art style and subtlety are soo charming
Tumblr media
A Favorable Wind on Full Sails by Arantoochika
The stories don’t really grab you but the art style, rough as it is, has a very indie appeal. I like how the night scenes and light in general are rendered
Lianhuanhua (5 different ones) from Paradise Systems
Cool little format…I want to make one!
Mermaid Town by Tsugawa Tomohiro
Dreams as manga, I liked the first one best
Tumblr media
Think I’ve Still Got It! by Wang XX
Cute and the book design is great…the middle story about Seal having to do an unethical job for low pay lmao
Eyeshield 21 (rereading but mostly watching the Anime) by Inagaki Riichiro and Murata Yusuke
Football….Murata can really draw! Alas, he is a bisexual misogynist (the vibes of one punch man especially) and clearly a legs and ass guy…
Fiction
The Cabinet
by Un-Su Kim translated by Sean Lin-Halbert
I made a pitch deck about this one. Kind of a wild book…I loved it, obviously.
Where the Wild Ladies Are
by Aoko Matsuda, translated by Polly Barton
Also in my pitch deck. This is a series of short story feminist re-tellings of traditional Japanese folk stories. A great, light-hearted read with a fun through line that by the end links each story together in a fun way.
Ancillary Justice
by Ann Leckie
This one made me crazy for a few days and I’m really looking forward to finishing the trilogy! I love when the man-made city-like thing is sentient, and I love politically charged world-building.
The Employees by Olga Ravn
This actually works as an interesting companion piece to Ancillary Justice with some similar themes (humanoids who’s primary purpose is as employees on a space ship among human crew)
The Wedding Party by Liu Xinwu translated by Jeremy Tiang
Kind of a slog to get through but if you, like me, have interest in post Cultural Revolution life in Beijing this is apparently one of The Books about it
Nonfiction
Carceral Capitalism
by Jackie Wang
My first book of the year and a great text for me to get into nonfiction reading this year. As someone who hasn’t read too widely in this domain before, I found it very comprehensive. If the title and it’s implications (to be clear, a big one is anti-black racism in the US) intrigue you in any way, it’s probably my top nonfiction recommendation so far this year.
A Feminist Reading of Debt
by Lucí Cavallero and Verónica Gago, translated by Liz Mason-Deese
A manifesto about why debt is a feminist issue, written in context of the Argentinian feminism movement starting in 2016. While my understanding of finance and the mechanism of debt is still rudimentary, I feel that this was a good all-round, short capsule of many topics worth delving into and counts as an international feminist must read according to me.
How to Read Donald Duck: Imperialist Ideology in the Disney Comic
by Ariel Dorfman and Armand Mattelart, translated by David Kunzle
Anti-imperial media critique my beloved. This book was burned, dumped into the ocean, and otherwise systematically destroyed in the days following the 1973 CIA-backed right-wing coup and neoliberal regime in Chile. Footnote that the US refused to condemn the book burning against almost every other nation in the UN because of course they did. Evidently it’s hard-hitting stuff to critique Disney. Awesome to read this edition for all the extras on the Disney copyright foolery involved in keeping this book from reaching English language audiences until this one released in 2020. If your media critique hurts fascists and corporations this badly you’re doing it so right.
Race For Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor
A very thorough profile of the period in time during which the US government housing policy set the tone for Black homeownership and Black urban housing. For me it kind of set the scene to understand some of the issues of housing, credit, and racism.
Bankers and Empire: How Wall Street Colonized the Caribbean by Peter James Hudson
As the title says! Not a lot of analysis but rather a walk through the time line of the early 1900s US expansion into foreign banking in the Caribbean, was helpful to get a grasp of how financial imperialism works.

Gratitude and Resentment-Duguhong _ txt Novel Paradise
Liu Hanyan's heart suddenly moved, rather disappointed with a "ah", and then inadvertently asked: "Hades chief rudder? But where is the chief rudder of Hades? "The chief rudder of Hades is in the north." Shen's friend asked why? Ma Xinwu, an iron abacus, was indeed a crafty old man. As soon as the word "north" was exported, he realized that he had stopped talking. After a meal, he changed his words and asked in reply. Two people also know that this question is too sudden, has caused Ma Xinwu suspicion, each heart a surprised, ultrasonic generator driver, busy and each dark gathering true strength, in case. Liu Hanyan was quick-witted. He pretended to be puzzled and asked in a surprised voice, "Because of the difficulties in joining the gang, my brother is anxious to see the judge and try to accommodate him.". What's the matter? Could it be that I made a mistake and violated the rules of the gang? Ma Xinwu shook his head slightly and said in a serious voice, "That's a good question, but it's one of the forbidden rules of the gang. Violators will be executed immediately. Fortunately, you two haven't joined the gang yet, and you're still not familiar with the rules of the gang. This is not the limit. However, after you join the gang, you must not mention it in front of others, ultrasonic emulsifying machine, otherwise you will inevitably be killed!" At this point, he sighed lightly, sighed with emotion, and said with great satisfaction, "In fact, there are only a dozen or so people in the gang who can know the location of the underworld. If you talk about the position of the little old man, you shouldn't know it. It's just that the status of the little old man is slightly different from that of others."; The rest of the thousands of people in the gang are just guarding their posts and obeying orders. Not to mention that they have no honor to see the face of the queen of the underworld, they know nothing about where the underworld is. The old man said too much in front of you tonight. If you let the people in the gang listen to it, I'm afraid they won't be tortured. Alas! He ended his talk with an incomprehensible sigh, which seemed to have a lot of emotion. In fact, if Ma Xinwu, who is known as gloomy and cunning, said too much tonight, and every sentence is absolutely true, so that two people can easily learn a lot of hidden things that are difficult to detect by breaking iron shoes, which virtually increases the mystery of the nether world, probably this should be attributed to God's will! The two of them also knew that enough was enough to ask questions, and if they continued to ask questions, ultrasonic metal welding ,Ultrasonic emulsifier machines, they would certainly arouse his suspicion. Moreover, as far as Ma Xinwu's words were concerned, he only knew so much, and it would be useless to ask again. Liu Hanyan suppressed his excitement and said with a grateful smile, "Thank you, Ma Jieyin, for not avoiding taboos and giving advice. While thanking my brother, I will keep it in mind and never say a word lightly!" In fact, the bottom of his heart would like to catch Ma Xinwu on the spot, forcing him to say where the nether world is located, The mountains were getting denser and denser. Looking back, what you had just walked behind you was not the road, but a ravine along the mountains on both sides, and there were many branch roads. In the vast night, you didn't know what you had just passed, so you turned around and looked forward. It is along this ravine to the depths of the mountains, this kind of place is so late at night, if not Ma Xinwu lead the way, how can not think of this group of mountains will have a quiet to help the chief rudder! At the same time, once you enter this area, it is not easy to go out if you are not familiar with the terrain and the road. Not by the sword eyebrow deep frown, looked at the blue nine Qing, the expression is a burst of surprise. Lan Jiuqing's face was serene, and his steps were still leisurely. He could not see that he had a trace of uneasiness. He said to himself, "Shame!"! Knowing that he had entered a dangerous place, what he encountered was of course dangerous. He just wanted to kill the enemy, and put everything else behind him first,Ultrasonic nano dispersion, so he calmed down, got rid of distracting thoughts, and galloped silently. fycgsonic.com

Chapter 11 The Elder's Clan? Martial Bloodline?
In 1989, during that time I was even now practicing Chinese boxing at Liu He Sect with Small Doctor. Mor Noi is known for the standard Chinese healing regarding tendons and it is a Chinese boxing teacher based in Chiang Mai for some sort of long time. (Mor Noi, let me call him "Pee Noi" instead regarding the word Doctor Noi. Or Ajarn Noi) Every time, from 7 l. m. to 9 p. m., Ajarn Noi made an appointment to exercise Chinese boxing with Pi Boon's home, which is the place of Liu He or she Academy. Project Realisation Blog:Production process
For the story of the birch forest, progress is very difficult, and I can't think of good stories and meanings.
In China, writer Xinwu Liu once wrote an article: the whisper of the birch forest. This article describes the loving deeds of the forest guards of the unnamed forest guards and praises the spirit of the forest guards' silent dedication and willingness to sacrifice.
I want to express the soldiers who sacrificed to protect the country through the birch forest. Now people will forget these heroes of sacrifice because of the comfort of the environment. I want to remind people to remember in this way.

I tried to add some unclear effects to the tree in the front row, which made the scene have some layering.
After communicating with the instructor, I got some advice and added different color content to the four different trees.

just listened to a podcast episode where they were interviewing the translator of a new english version of liu xinwu's the wedding party (1985), which is apparently a modern classic in china but hasn't ever appeared in english. anyway, the interviewer/podcast host was someone who I generally like and find to have a nuanced understanding of things, but even he couldn't resist constantly asking leading questions about the supposed censorship, government backlash, veiled commentary etc. that he assumed xinwu must have been mixed up in, almost none of which was corroborated at all by the translator, who also clearly didn't find that an interesting or relevant line of questioning. (for what it's worth, the translator is from singapore, not the u.s./u.k.)
not news to any of you of course but yet another reminder that sinophobia is truly is one hell of a drug
