Most Common Problems Faced by My Childhood Dolls (Grouped by Type of Doll)
Baby/Companion Dolls: life-threatening diseases; bullying by other dolls at school; my dubious discipline style; my divorce from my imaginary husband Jake.
Groovy Girls: bullying by other Groovy Girls; life-altering gymnastics accidents; feet too unwieldy for go-go boots.
Barbies: false witchcraft accusations; real witches; tuberculosis; kidnapping; the time Ken and his brother Adam started a polygamous cult; bullying by other Barbies (whether in a normal high school or a beauty pageant or a cult); basically anything bad that happened to female movie stars in Hollywood under the studio system; the challenges of raising a million Chrissies and Kellies and Stacies and Skippers and similarly sized off-brand child dolls with little help from Ken or Adam; sibling rivalry (including an East of Eden-style mess between Ken and Adam).
Dollhouse Families: my friend Emily C. (I was Emily S.) stealing the mom doll from my old Fisher-Price family, leaving John (the dad) a widower, so when I got a new family a few years later, I decided that John should marry Patricia, the mom of the new family, which made it necessary for me to interpret Robbie (almost certainly meant to be a dad doll) as Patricia's teenage son, which was obviously very emotionally confusing for Robbie and exacerbated the usual tensions of a newly blended family.
Clothespin Dolls: Nancy, Alice, and Lily, the three charming clothespin dolls made by my genuinely talented great-aunt Beth in the 1960s or 1970s, were grown-up sisters who had a complicated dynamic (both Nancy and Lily had serious psychological and/or substance abuse issues, so Alice had to take care of them and Nancy's children and her own children) and also experienced nineteenth-century-literature-style problems, like diphtheria and ice-skating accidents and bear attacks. The clothespin dolls that I created myself as a tween/young teen were not as well-made, but their problems were generally limited to normal high school bullshit (not even the kind where you get poisoned or kidnapped!).
Miscellaneous Medium-Sized Figurines (mostly fast food toys of Disney characters and mini-Barbies): various passive-aggressive rivalries between groups (mini-Barbies vs. movie/TV characters, Disney vs. non-Disney, movie vs. TV, protagonist vs. non-protagonist, etc.); a lack of eligible bachelors (leading to unwise marriages, such as Belle from Beauty and the Beast marrying a temperamental Space Jam monster); ennui.
Playmobils: the Playmobils had a nearly utopian society, relatively free from poverty and class snobbery, and generally this diverse group of Union soldiers, stuffy Victorians, pirates, outlaws, royalty, horse girls, milkmaids, and fairies were able to work out their differences peacefully. However, all that progressive modernity had a dark side, most clearly illustrated by the Kafkaesque ordeal of Oliver, a boy who was imprisoned for no discernable reason by an evil psychiatrist and his social worker girlfriend despite the desperate efforts of his mother to free him. Intense wartime romances and infectious disease outbreaks were also common themes.
Fisher-Price Great Adventure Action Figures: these rather hideous but very fun toys (consisting of an anachronistic mix of knights, pirates, cowboys, and Robin Hood's Merry Men) belonged to my seven-years-younger brother, so we would play with them a lot while I was looking after him. Naturally there was a lot of military conflict and criminal activity built into our play (will Robin Hood and his friends be able to steal the treasure from the castle? Will the golden knights or the black knights win the big battle? Who will stop the stagecoach robberies?), but, to entertain myself, I would introduce storylines such as "the Golden Sword Knight is tired of being bullied by the other knights, so he runs away and goes to live in the forest with Robin Hood's gang, where he falls in love with a female outlaw" and "Little John starts a AC/DC-style rock band with two of the black knights and everyone hates it."
Fisher-Price Little People: easily the most provincial of the doll groups, the Fisher-Price Little People struggled with extreme class/wealth inequality, widespread adultery, child abuse, teen homelessness, practically non-existent resources for the disabled, sexual repression, a character known only as "The Pervert," and a killer clown. Every day they went to school and work, and every night they tried to find someone to hook up with and maybe got kidnapped. I only wish my brother and I had been in possession of the motel playset. Think of all the extramarital affairs and drug deals that could have happened there!
Polly Pockets: the Polly Pocket community was dominated by two wealthy factions, a nouveau riche pair of brothers with a beach party house and the royal family. Due to a severe job and housing shortage, plus the local men's habit of not acknowledging their natural children, ordinary Polly Pockets had to struggle and scrape. Compared with the Barbies, there was a lot of solidarity among women (and also Josh, the one working-class boy Polly Pocket). Many of the Polly Pockets were very fragile, including the alcoholic Cowgirl Becky and the agoraphobic piano player Penny.
Paper Dolls: intense status jockeying over who had the most/best clothes, mainly. They also fought about friendships and (if there were any of them) boys, but it ultimately came down to clothes.

Just Us
 In the quiet of the night James finally has the time to reflect on his very first night in Hollywood. Under the pressure of his own thoughts, he'll find that he is never alone.
Rating: G
Pairing: N/A.
Words: 1868
The bedroom was dimly lit by the street lights peeking through the cracked and broken pieces of the blinds, illuminating the dingy carpet and dull paint of the walls. Virtually every space of the room was lined with miscellaneous boxes with messy scrawl, ‘summer clothes’, ‘electronics’, ‘hair products’. James made a mental note to dig into that box first when morning finally hit.
Whether the boys realized it or not, his regimen was more crucial now than ever. He thought back to the events earlier today and the impossibly beautiful up and coming stars that lounged around the Palm Woods. What made him special back home, his dazzling smile, piercing eyes and washboard abs, it was all part of the everyday here in California.
And if everything he worked so hard for was mundane here, what did that make him? He rolled over in his bed, tugging the comforter tighter around his shoulders almost as if the blanket would protect him from the frantic thoughts plaguing him.
Nothing about him was average, he refused to believe that. He can remember as far back as when he and the other boys were just starting as members of the junior hockey league, that he had also had his mind set on performing. Back then he had to beg and plead his mother for permission for singing and dance lessons. She argued that his schedule was already too full and his education would fall to the wayside, but after countless carefully constructed presentations on the benefits of these lessons and promises that Logan would tutor him, she relented.
He remembered how the boys used to tease him about the lessons when they were younger, jokes and jabs at their regular Friday night sleepovers at Carlos’. James knew they never meant any of it though because on the evening of his very first talent show, he peeped out of the curtain to see them sitting in the front row with the widest grins imaginable.
It was that night that he had finally decided this was his calling. Just seven years old, singing John Mayer and dazzling the crowd like he was born to. He lived off the high long after the song was finished and the curtains had fallen shut.
When he finally made his way back to everyone, the boys descended on him, each talking over the other in so much excitement about how cool he was and how he should have won over the unicycling juggler. His mother hadn’t been able to make the performance, a last minute work emergency she claimed. He didn’t let that get to him though, enjoying the good natured hair ruffling of Papi Garcia, the boys' unabating chattering, and Mama Knight’s promises of pizza. Even then he knew there would be other performances, and he would be so good that she couldn’t miss them.
And he did get better, way better. But was it enough? He could carry a tune, dance any routine that was thrown his way, but could he gain the type of fire that Gustavo was looking for? Failing wasn’t an option, if he turned back to Minnesota his mother would have him on the fast track to business school and this dream would be gone. Failure wasn’t an option, he couldn’t fail, he had to-.
His thoughts were interrupted by the feeling of cold air against his back as the comforter was pulled up and over someone slipping into the bed beside him. Carlos. James didn’t make any move to turn around and face him in the cramped twin bed and chose to stare at the light of the hallway creeping in from under the doorway. He had almost drifted to sleep from listening to the soft breathing from the other boy when Carlos broke the silence.
“I could hear you thinking from over there.” He paused for a moment before adding, “Did you wanna talk about it?”
The last thing he wanted to do was bring all of this worry onto someone else, so James did what he did best, deflected. Rolling over in the bed careful not to knock Carlos to the floor, James sat up and faced the other boy.
“So we might have striked out against the Jennifers, but I doubt they can resist my charms for long. I’ve already come up with a three step plan that will have them dying for a chance to date any member of our band.”
“James-”
“Though side note, we really need to come up with a name and soon. It seriously hurts your cred to say you’re in a band without a name and-”
“Look I-”
James just continued to press on hoping Carlos would get the hint to drop it, “Maybe if we learn some instruments, we could get in on that gig that that guitar dude seems to have going on at the pool, I mean chicks dig musicians.”
Carlos pulled himself into a sitting position beside James, raising his hand up to signal him to stop.
“It’s okay James, I’m scared too.”
And that was not exactly what James expected to hear.
“You don’t get scared. Just last week I watched you ride your mountain bike off of the top of Kendall’s house into their above ground pool. And let’s not forget the time you took one for the team and took Jenny Tinkler to homecoming.” He shuddered at the memory of her knocking over the snack table and somehow setting the DJ equipment on fire. “It’s hard to believe you’d get scared about anything.”
There’s a moment of silence between them before Carlos replies, “This is kinda different, ya know? Reckless behavior and wacky shenanigans? I can handle that no problem, but this is serious. And I’ve never been that great at serious.” He scratches his neck nervously, and looks off to the side. “I don’t want to ruin your dream dude.”
“You wouldn’t and you can’t.” He stretched his arm around the other boy’s shoulders, pulling him gently to his side. “It’s because of you guys that I even got the opportunity to be here, my dream wouldn’t work without everyone.”
He felt Carlos shake with laughter slightly before he replied, “Well technically we’re here because of Kendall, but I’ll take the sentiment cause it's a weirdly emotional night.”
James just rolled his eyes, though thankful that Carlos pulled them back from all the emotion talk. He wasn’t wrong, Kendall was the driving force of all this. He had the ‘fire’ as Gustavo called it. He would just describe it as stubbornness and a sheer lack of respect for authority, but somehow Kendall made those qualities seem endearing.
The door to the room creaked open bathing Carlos and James in the hallway light, the pair both shielding their eyes to adjust to the change in brightness. Just as quickly as it was opened, it shut again, quietly as to not wake up the other people in the apartment. Even after being partially blinded James knew that Kendall and Logan were approaching the bed, he’d know them anywhere.
“Any chance you have room for two more?” Kendall asked, already pulling himself onto the bed. The springs under it groaned as he and Logan shifted to get comfortable facing James and Carlos at the foot of the bed. For a moment James wondered just how much the weight limit was for this rickety bed frame.
“You guys couldn’t sleep either?” James questioned as he and Carlos pulled the comforter over the other two boys' legs.
“It isn’t actually that weird that we all can’t sleep. Scientists believe that this is just our brains natural instinct to protect itself in a new environment full of unforeseen threats. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it.” He glanced around at the other boys on the bed taking note of the way James was holding one of his pillows tightly to his chest, and Carlos was picking at a loose thread on the comforter. “Something tells me though, that we are all awake because of more than first night jitters.”
There was something a little comforting to James, that all of them were nervous about the future. Sometimes he forgot that even though Kendall was their fearless leader, Carlos was their wrecking ball with a heart of gold, and Logan was their resident genius, they were all still four hockey heads from Minnesota and completely out of their comfort zone.
From across the bed James saw Kendall straighten his posture and he knew immediately that they were in for one of his famous pep talks.
“So what if everyone here is a better singer or dancer than we are. And who cares if every person we come across is more attractive and talented. And who-”
James quickly introjected, “Is this going to get positive anytime soon?”
“I was getting to that.” Kendall replied with a roll of his eyes, “My point is there are always going to be people who are better than we are. It’s a given, but we all have something that everyone here doesn’t.”
“Lightning Fever Barracuda hair gel.”, “Mama Knight’s signature corn dog recipe.” “A death wish.”
“No. What I was getting at is look around. Even out of our depth, we still have each other. The stakes might be higher for sure, but we are still together setting out our game plans dog piled into one bed just like when we were kids. And I don’t know about you, but I think that is a hell of an advantage over anyone in Hollywood.”
And that is why he’s the leader James concluded. Some heartfelt words and an earnest smile, and Kendall could convince them they could do anything. It seemed silly to him that he had been so worried earlier in the night. Looking around at the other boys in the dim moonlight, he realized that he wasn’t in this alone. And even if this didn’t work out, he knows there are three people who would never let him feel like a failure.
“Well since I doubt any of us will feel like sleeping anytime soon, does anyone have some band name ideas? I’m thinking something like James and the Diamonds.”
He saw the good natured eye rolls from across the bed and felt Carlos groan from his spot under James arm. It felt good to get back to normal and he eagerly slipped into their own routine, bickering about what really qualified as a solid band name.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Please, please can I wake them up? One smack of the pot that’s all.”
In the morning light, Mama Knight stood in the doorway observing the scene before her. She had gone to Logan and Kendall’s room first, but when the room was empty she had a feeling this is where they would be.
All four boys were tucked under the comforter of the twin sized bed, practically asleep sitting up. She smiled softly to herself, noting that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
She shook her head, gently leading Katie from the room, “Let them sleep a little while longer, they have a long road ahead of them.”
Slow (oneshot) by @sunlightdances
Intimacy is sooooo sexy xox
Nominated by @manawhaat
Ritual (oneshot) by @winchester-fantasies
This fic is grounded, subtle, realistic, and has an incredible energy between Dean and the reader! There’s so many little things that play into the bigger picture to make this really flow and work seamlessly as a whole!
Temporary Scars (series) by @thoughtslikeaminefield
Fucking hell. Dean x Donna x Benny is such a rare pair that it’s NOT something I knew I needed, but everything about this dynamic is fucking perfect. It’s a bit of an AU, but I still love the way each character was represented. What they all brought to the table and how they balanced each other out in exactly the ways they needed. There’s a dynamic here that I haven’t seen before, especially not with THESE characters, and they complement each other fucking GORGEOUSLY!
Boyking fic (oneshot) by @whispersandwhiskerburn
This shit is fucking CRAFTY! There’s a lot of little things that carry through this and the way that ‘control’ is presented in each scene of this fic is very cool.
Calm (series) by @winchesterswoonathon
Oof! This John series just totally fucks me up. It’s perfect in the way you swoon over him and yearn to see a side of him he so rarely shows others. Maggie definitely knows how to nail the pining for John angle!
Dream Drabble (oneshot) by @theychosefamily
Sam’s comfort and sincerity in this kill me! It may have been inspired by a dream, but this tracks so well for each of them and could definitely be a scene plucked from the show!
The Unexpected (oneshot) by @impalaimagining
Goddamn this is sexy as all hell! It’s intense and passionate and scary and dazzlingly wonderful!
Nominated by @flamencodiva
Three’s A Crowd (series) by @1000roughdrafts
So I was browsing Kay’s Masterlist and came upon this very lovely Gem! I would love to see what happens next and I know Kay is extremely busy, but she is a talented writer and I wanted to put this lovely work out there. It is a wonderful concept and I can’t wait to see what happens!
Just Me & My Baby (oneshot) by @deanwinchesterswitch
A good way to rot your teeth with Dean fluff. This story pulls on your heartstrings and can be just what you need when you feel down.
The Pact (series) by @coffee-obsessed-writer
This is an amazing AU Sam Fic! It is well written and traps you into the fantasy world from the very beginning. I can’t wait to see the roller coaster that is this story as it is beginning to unfold!
Nominated by @deanwanddamons
The Sullivan Series (series) by @katehuntington
I binge read this series and adore it. Zoe is such a badass and an awesome OFC.
It is so good it could easily be written as a series of SPN and I am really hoping it is continued as I can’t wait for the next series. Kate is such an awesome person, hugely supportive and a big influence on me as a writer. This series deserves so much more recognition.
Ride With Me (seires) by @katehuntington
This series is divine. I am so invested in this right now. The way Kate writes is a true inspiration to me and this AU is stunning. Her story telling and descriptions are totally immersive and I am so excited to see where she takes us on this journey.
He’s Not You (series) by @mummybear
This series is awesome! It’s really building momentum and I’m loving where it’s going. Such a great idea for a story and can’t wait to see where Chelsea takes us!
The Man on the Side of the Road (series) by @supernatural-jackles
This series was beautiful. I was so invested in this and so sad when it came it an end. It was very cathartic for me to read as I related to the reader so much.
Shatter Me (series) by  @winchest09
This series is incredible. Such a superb concept and I love the way it has been written. The feeling of isolation and Dean’s desperation to save her had me engrossed all the way through. A must read.
D.W. (oneshot) by @kittenofdoomage
I have recently ventured into dark fic and was recommended this.
Demon!Dean is just 🔥 and this fic is dark, sexy and very explicit. And holy shit I LOVED IT!
Nominated by @moosekateer13
House of the Rising Sun (series) by @kittenofdoomage
What I really loved about it shows the love can change your whole perspective of the world when love is thrown into the mix.
The Ones You Love (series) by @kittenofdoomage
It shows how far the Winchester's are willing go when it comes to their family.
Cosa Nostra (series) by @kittenofdoomage
Loved how in the end love and their bond was stronger than an obstacles that were thrown in their way.
Paid In Full (series) by @kittenofdoomage
Loved it! It taught you look past what you see at first.
Poor Little Rich Girl (series) by @winchesterprincessbride
Political Animals  (series) by @winchesterprincessbride
Loved the sometimes it showed the its better to break away from people who are trying to control your life.
Bed of Roses (series) by @crispychrissy
Loved how it to taught you to look past first impressions and that there is always more than meets the eye.
Nominated by @thegirlwhorunswithwinchesters
Control and Release - 30 (series) by @thecleverdame
I think I might’ve nominated this series before, when I wasn’t caught up yet, but I am now and I just have to recommend this chapter. The entire story is gold but this chapter in particular had me sucked right into the scene at the end. The intensity of the fight and the way they deal with everything that is going on; the emotions, the worlds outside of their little bubble of safety. I don’t want to say too much and spoil it for whoever hasn’t read this series yet. But, if you are one of those people, I highly recommend you change that ASAP.
The Secrets We Keep (series) by @princessmisery666
Better late than never, right? At least that’s what I’m telling myself to ease the guilt I’m feeling for how long it took me to finally read this series like I said I would. I didn’t enjoy it any less, that’s for sure. And that was even before I got to the twist that made it even better. I loved the vulnerability between Sam and Erin, and the different kind of friendship she had with Dean.
Cabin Fever (long oneshot) by @slytherkins
I’ve already attempted (and failed) to express my thoughts on this story to the author privately, so I won’t try again here, in risk of my heart shattering all over again. But what I definitely will say (and I will break into my upstairs neighbor’s apartment to scream it from their balcony if I have to) is this: STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING and go read this fic if you haven’t already. It’s a heavy read, yes. But it is more than worth it, I promise you.
Equanimous (oneshot) by @imagineteamfreewill
I love the tension in this scene. The boys are so in character and I could picture the demons perfectly. And, of course, Cas storming in, being badass, and saving the day, that’s always a plus.
Non-existent (oneshot) by @waywardjoy
I’m definitely a sucker for a good crack-fic. To be honest, when I read the summary I was already sold. That signature bickering between the boys never gets old, does it?
Nominated by @impalaimagining
Handy Man (oneshot) by @deanwanddamons
Physically speaking, on the list of things I love about Dean Winchester, this checks almost every single box. I love the little things you’re noticing about Dean as the reader - his freckles, the contrast between his skin and the black shirt he’s wearing, exactly which Zeppelin song he’s singing while he works. The teasing is a nice touch too, especially the line about the night before. Proud Dean is so cute, and it’s exactly how I would expect him to react to being the hero around the house.
Nominated by @impala-dreamer
Almost Paradise (oneshot) by @amanda-teaches
Amanda always always writes the fluff so well, but this little bit of bittersweet longing is delicious. Also, she nails Dean EVERY TIME. One of those writers who just gets Dean’s voice down so perfectly. Very Very well done!
Enough Time (oneshot)  by @dissect-me
I was just scrolling the pond list and found this wonderful Destiel fic. I mean… the emotions were intense and I was a mess by the end. Just lovely and so well done. I will be diving back through their masterlist for more Destiel!!
  Nominated by @kittenofdoomage
Life For Rent (series) by @winchest09
@katehuntington told me to go read this so I did and I do not regret it. An amazingly sexy (and at times, heartbreaking) series, not for the faint of heart. Totally waiting on edge for the next chapter.
Call Of The Ocean (series) by @flamencodiva and @anatheweirdo
I’m fairly certain I’ve nominated this before but it’s so good, I’m gonna nominate it again. You will absolutely become invested in Thasman’s well-being.
Nominated by @fangirlxwritesx67
Communion (oneshot) by @thoughtslikeaminefield
But Dean’s natural state is this – nesting, nuzzling, curled up and warm. He speaks softly and quietly. His voice isn’t always rough and hard. He sings. MY FEELS. This is beautiful and heart-wrenching all at once.
Sex with Dean is always really good. A lot of times it’s a rushed, life-affirming kind of thing. So when we have time, every touch is at once charged and grounded. And when we have time and are also able to imbibe? It’s metamorphic. All of this, just one perfect line after another. WOW
Just to be his in our own little bubble. And this, this is exactly how this story feels- so close and heavy and perfect Amazing work,.Like, really astounding.
Synesthesia (oneshot) by @there-must-be-a-lock
Lou took this prompt and did something wildly creative! It’s so well done that the reader can see and feel and taste it.
Wild Thing (series) by @there-must-be-a-lock
I am in love with the Everything series so, so much. Lou has done a beautiful job of building a world with J2 x reader, so loving and creative and hot. This one is, for sure, a favorite! Incorporates one of my favorite quotes into a smoking hot fic. Good work!!
Dear Mr. Fantasy (oneshot) by @itmighthavebeenintentional
But there’s one particular Other Dean, a favorite one his mind drifts to during rare peaceful moments. Daydreaming when he should be researching, drifting off when a particular song plays on the radio while he’s working on Baby, even washing his hands sometimes will pull him back to those dreams.
6 paragraphs in, and I knew Val was going to break my heart. This is a gorgeous gorgeous story! Creative premise, great characterization, and written so that you can see and taste and feel every moment.
I found myself wanting to both read faster, and slow down and savor it. And yes, it broke my heart, but so beautifully that I would let it happen over and over again.
Weight (oneshot) by @67midnightwriter
This one is short and both painful and beautiful. So very heavy with experience and meaning. An excellent example of the ways that our favorite characters can help inspire us, lift us and encourage us to keep going
The Second Hand Unwinds (oneshot) by @mskathywriteswords
Kathy is new-ish to the SPN family but not to either writing or fandom, and it is immediately apparent in her first piece of SPN fanfic. Her creative storyline, her grasp of the characters, and her way with words make it immediately apparent that you are reading the work of a master!
Salvation (oneshot) by @dontshootmespence
This story feels like an episode of the show from earlier seasons, just the right balance of angst and monster fighting with tantalizing peeks of smut and feels. Excellent job!
There are no words that come close to explaining what she means to him. How she saves what soul he has left. These flashback scenes are both hot and tender. The voice the author  gives to Sam is spot on, achingly familiar. The contrast between the flashbacks and the action is painfully good.
What’s more frightening, a man like Dean, practiced in his violence out of necessity? Or a man like him, on the verge of losing everything and nothing left to lose? This is a well drawn distinction between the Winchester brothers, and such a good characterization of Sam! It’s easy to forget sometimes what a fearsome hunter he is, but this author reminds us with razor sharp clarity.
“You’re safe with me, Sam. You never have to hide from me.“ Such a beautiful relationship between Sam and this woman! It’s no wonder he’s fighting so hard to save her.
This story has an imaginative plot, fast paced action and some sweet hotness! Plus the author does such a good job with Sam, I’m in love with him all over again. I haven’t read this author much before but you’d better believe I won’t miss a story now!
Casual Affair (oneshot) by @fookinghelljensensthighs
This Dean x Benny fic is short, smoking hot and painfully good. A must read!
Nominated by @mariekoukie6661
The Force of Habit (series) by @littlegreenplasticsoldier
I read that series at least 3 times now. I love this story, its witty and funny. This fic just makes me smile without trying! Even after reading 3 times, I still thoroughly enjoyed it like it was the first time.
Satisfied (series) by @crashdevlin
This is so good, the emotion that this series makes me feel is just out of this world!
Dangerous Signs (series) by @kittenofdoomage
Rhi always has brilliant idea!!! This is one of those and I just can’t get enough of her writing.
Control and Release (series) by @thecleverdame
What start as mostly just porn turned into such a great series with twist and turns!
Hunger (oneshot0 by @impala-dreamer
Oof… what to say about this? it’s Beka! It’s hot and sweaty and makes me want more! Like everything she writes!
Nominated by @myinconnelly1
Couldn’t Resist (oneshot) by @impala-dreamer
This is fun, funny, and sexy. Short sweet and to the point, while still getting you hot under the collar!!!
Dark Obsession (oneshot) by @impala-dreamer
Where do I even start in this drabble! It's so fucking cute and funny! I was laughing out loud and could totally see TFW trying to play their parts here
Promise Me We’ll Be Alright (oneshot) by @impala-dreamer
What a pain in the heart this fic was. It hurt so good!! I was ready to cry
Say My Name (oneshot) by @idabbleincrazy
Smoking hot! While in general Baby-girl is a turn off for me, this fic is so far from it! funny at the start with some cracky dean who is caught in the middle, then getting some possessive Sam which is like my fav!
I’ll See You on Your Birthday (oneshot) by @sorenmarie87
SOOO MUCH FLUFF!!! Like seriously i needed a dentist after. Some cute ABO pregnancy right here!
Just A Number (oneshot) by @crispychrissy
Again Sexy and Funny (I have a type ok) This was a great use of Age Gap and it wasn't creepy and didn't need a little blue pill at all!
Happily Ever After (oneshot) by @dontshootmespence
HAPPILY EVER AFTER! It's all i need to say!!!! Read It!
Missing Person (oneshot) by @emilyshurley
This fic is by my favoritest human in the world!!! It’s hilarious and silly but also almost canon. Plus I make a cameo as Garth’s friend!!! What’s not to love!!!
Nominated by @lovetusk
The Only Exception (series) by @ne-gans & @negans-lucille-tblr
While only the prequel so far, I’m too hyped for this beauty to NOT nominate it.
Survive (oneshot) by @kittenofdoomage
I’m always here for some Alpha!Sam, but this one punched me right in the feels. How dare anyone keep him from his Omega.
He Wasn’t In Love With You (oneshot) by @sorenmarie87
Dawn doesn't angst often, but sometimes she does and I love it.
Nominated by @there-must-be-a-lock
Noises (oneshot) by @67midnightwriter
Just. HOT. Hot hot hot like burning. Dom!Cas playing Dean like a goddamn fiddle... what more can you ask for!?
Come For Me (oneshot) by @fangirlxwritesx67
My favorite thing this author has published so far! There are a whole lot of emotions in this one, adrenaline and fear and relief and lust and tenderness, and you can feel the depth of everything going on between them and the chaos of the moment. Also, nailed the “oh shit where did this predatory hotass come from” feeling that I totally imagine would happen during a first time with Sammy.
Plus One (oneshot) by @thoughtslikeaminefield
This is smutty and raunchy and HOT but it also manages to nail the sweet, loving side of Dean. Smut can so easily be one-dimensional, but this fic managed to be both filthy and tender in a way that feels 150% true to character.
Dear Mr. Fantasy (oneshot) by @itmighthavebeenintentional
An absolutely stunning exploration of some parallel universe Deans. Gorgeously vivid language, such incredible character accuracy, borderline heartbreaking but in a way that isn’t hopeless; it makes you feel FULL. My favorite SPN fic I’ve read in a long time.
The Second Hand Unwinds (oneshot) by @mskathywriteswords
Incredibly evocative, gorgeous wistful tone, and a couple little plot twists that hit you with all the right feels.
Nominated by @winchest09
All I Want (series) by @katehuntington
I love this, so much. I love the take on this particular episode and how in fact it brings back the reader instead of *spoiler*. It’s still ongoing and it’s already tugging on heartstrings and has made me cry so if you read this, grab your tissues!
Ride With Me (series) by @katehuntington
This series has my heart. Like this could be a published book that i would read cover to cover, over and over. The spine would be broken, pages glued in because i would have read it that much. How everything is described, how the world is painted, the characters, the setting…just everything. It’s a must read..A MUST READ.
I Just Called to Say I Love You (series) by @talesmaniac89
This broke my heart. This was so beautifully written to the point i was sobbing behind my screen mumbling incoherent words to my husband before talking to a few other tumblr blogs about it. If you read this, have tissues handy. Dean was so in character and my heart will never be the same. Must read.
The Man In Apartment 43 (series) by @talesmaniac89
This series has me so intrigued! It’s written amazingly, has me gasping, has me seriously flinching at some of the creepy goings on and I cannot wait to see where this goes! It’s an ongoing series and I’m loving it!
Handy Man (oneshot) by @deanwanddamons
This lovely little drabble satisfies all my domestic dean needs. Covering his fine ass, arms and back. I mean…Come on! It’s just everything that you need in a bite size package. I absolutely loved it!
Nominated by @katehuntington
One For Tomorrow, One Just For Today (oneshot)  by @thoughtslikeaminefield
Sex with Dean is always amazing, but there’s nothing hotter than him singing a classic while he’s doing it. After reading this, that famous song by The Doors will never sound the same. Sit back, relax and listen to the music.
Handy Man (oneshot) by @deanwanddamons
Dean fixing a blocked drain under the kitchen sink in a black shirt and Levi’s jeans; what a sight that must be. The writer of this fic is able to describe the scene in great detail. Besides the obvious appreciation of the gorgeous man, it’s great to see him doing something normal and domesticated. It’s the life we all wish for him. A great little drabble for a Sunday morning with a cup of tea on the side.
You’re Home (oneshot) by @impala-dreamer
A drabble that’s absolutely worth mentioning, is this short story. Beka does Dean’s PTSD more justice in 682 words than the writers have ever done on the entire show. A beautiful piece of art.
Imagine Dean debating asking you out (oneshot) by @luci-in-trenchcoats
Dean has a crush on a girl, Sam is calling him out. When his little brother threatens to expose his secret, Dean tries to silence him, and it’s honestly the funniest read I’ve had this month. Writing comedy isn’t easy, but this was flawless.
I Just Called To Say I Love You (oneshot) @talesmaniac89
This one hurts bad, but in the most wonderful way. It’s exactly how Dean would go down, the characterisation beyond perfect. The descriptions, the dialogue, the details, the choices. It’s a Rembrandt painted with letters.
Side By Side (series) by @talesmaniac89
Another brilliant creation, based on the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. A song which surfaces a lot of emotions, much like this poetic and amazing piece of fanfiction. Words that come to mind are heart wrenching, tear jerking, and in a way comforting as well. A must read.
The Voices (oneshot) by @fictionalabyss
Based on ‘I hear the voices when I’m dreaming. I can hear them sing’ from the Supernatural anthem Carry On My Wayward Son, comes this breathtakingly beautiful piece of fanfiction. Perfect lines, spot on dialogue and it couldn’t have been more true to the character. It’s painfully raw, sad, and tears will fall. It makes you feel for Dean in ways that are difficult to describe. The writer of this story is known for her talent with words, but she outdid herself here.
Nicotine (oneshot) by @talesmaniac89
This story is inspired by the song Nicotine by Chef’Special and was written for my 1K celebration. The lyrics to this song are surprisingly depressing, despite it being an upbeat song, and the writer has captured it better than I could have ever hoped for. If her writing was music, it would be a symphony played by an orchestra. Her way with words is melodic and moving. Goosebumps all over.
 My Hero (oneshot) by @plaidstiel-wormstache
What I love most about this fanfic is the medical accuracy. I am no expert in any way, but after seeing countless medical dramas and having done plenty of research for characters and stories, I really appreciate it when knowledge about medicine practically drips from my screen. A lovely read.
Thank you all for the awesome work and great feedback!
These are not actual awards! This system is set up so everyone in the pond has a chance to share the love and promote a fic/author that has grabbed your attention. The more people that participate, and the more everyone remembers to submit their own fics after posting, the better this will be :D
THANK YOU ALL AGAIN, KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK, AND AS ALWAYS, HAPPY WRITING!
Survey #308
“you don’t need treats, and you don’t need tricks, and you don’t need me.”
Middle name? Marie. Or Marie Catherine, if we're technical, but as someone who loooong left Catholicism and never even agreed with many aspects of it in the first place, I don't like to include it. If you're confused, there's a ceremony called Confirmation, and while I honestly don't even remember the details of it, you adopt the name of a saint you want to stand for, kinda. I chose Catherine just because I liked the name outta my other options. Democrat/republican/other? I classify myself as Independent because I really don't relate well enough to either, but I do know I'm becoming more and more liberal with time. Do you dress according to your mood? My mood? No. I dress with what I feel like wearing at that time, but my actual mood has nothing to do with it. Are you good at doing hair/make up? No. Are you always worried or stressed about something? 24/7, my friend. Can you swim? Yeah. Are you afraid of needles? I don't like them, but I'm not afraid of them. How many kids do you want? Zero. Long/short nails? I keep mine short. Do you like wearing hats? No. Does mall Santa Clauses or Easter bunnies freak you out? Nah, I loved seeing Santa as a kid. :') Would you consider yourself clumsy? I am RIDICULOUSLY clumsy. Do you like when a guy picks you up in his arms? In concept, but I ain't easy to pick up anymore lmao. Do you like hairless cats? I do!! Females, anyway, for... obvious reasons lol. Not having fur makes some things waaay too ~obvious~ otherwise. I would love a sphynx. Do you like the color yellow? No; it's actually one of my most disliked colors. Have you ever seen a cat have a hairball? Yeah. Have you ever had a tooth pulled? Not by a dentist, no, just by myself as a kid when I was losing my baby teeth. When someone says don’t look do you look? It depends on why they're telling me to not look. Have you ever played spin the bottle? No. If you had to name three important details about you, what would you say? I'm a very emotional person, I need a lot of "me" time, and to be aware of my social anxiety so not every interaction I have is perceived as just a dumpster fire. What are your three biggest insecurities? My creativity, my goddamn body, and my lack of social skills. If you could write anonymous letters to three people, who would you send it to and what would you say? Ummm. I can only think of people I miss and don't WANT to be anonymous... Favorite photo of yourself? A senior prom picture I don't have anymore. I looked so, so happy and fuck my low self-esteem, gorgeous. Who are you disappointed with right now? I'm like, permanently disappointed in myself lol. Would you date an 18-year-old at the age you are now? No. My minimum is 21. What question do you hate to answer? "Are you a virgin?" because it's just a confusing answer. It doesn't sound like one at all, but trust me on this. The subject of sex just makes me uncomfortable anyway, so even if I was confident in the answer, I wouldn't want to talk about it. What’s your most listened to song? I don't have a way of actually finding that out, but I'd say I've been listening to "ULTRAnumb" by Blue Stahli quite a lot lately. If you were a performing artist, what would you title your first album? I mean, I don't know. It would depend on what was going on in my life and head at the time. If someone told you you could give one person a present and your budget was unlimited–what present would you get and for whom? A nice car for Mom. She's had the same shitty car for yeeeeeaaaaarrrrrssssss now because she just can't afford a new one; hell, this one was free. A dance friend hit a deer, so the front of the car is messed up, and she bought a new one, but because the car itself was still functional, she gave it to my mom. Mom is so loved at the studio. The car just has various issues by this point, like trouble starting, accelerating, it's bumpy, etc., so it's way past time for a new one. Do you like licorice? NOOOOOOOOOO that's a big 'ole "ew." Have you ever visited your country’s capital city? No, but I've seen it from a distance when riding up to NY. When was the last time you were outdoors for over an hour? WOW. I couldn't even try to guess. What is the shortest amount of time you’ve lived somewhere? The house I was born into. I actually don't know how long Mom and Dad lived there, but I was only in that house as a very little baby. I have zero memories of it. What’s your favorite kind of mint? (Peppermint/wintergreen/spearmint/etc.) ... There's a difference? lol I guess peppermint? What was the last thing to frustrate you? I wanted to draw yesterday, but I didn't know what to draw to even get started. Have you ever been to a bachelor or bachelorette party? No. Did any of your family members serve in WWII? I don't believe so? Well... maybe my grampa did? I don't remember. What’s your favorite kind of salad? Gimme an Olive Garden salad and I will deadass eat the whole bowl. Are you more realistic or idealistic? I'd say I'm more realistic with most things. Are you currently borrowing something from someone? No. Is anyone currently borrowing anything from you? No. What is your last name’s heritage/country of origin? Ireland. When did you last buy a new pair of shoes? What kind? I got new flipflops a year or so back because my old Rainbows were so worn out and blackened my feet. Have you ever experienced culture shock while traveling? If so, where? No. Are you able to see the stars at night where you live? I actually haven't checked since moving here. We're in the suburbs though, so it's questionable. Do you include your middle initial in your signature? Not unless it's required, usually. I think. When's the last time I physically signed anything, anyway? What brand of computer do you have? It's an Acer Nitro. What operating system does that computer run? Windows 10. What’s the oldest piece of clothing that you still own and wear? I don't really know, given how much my weight has fluctuated. Went drastically up, went down, now it's back up. .-. I still own a handful of shirts I want to "shrink back into" from late HS and early college times, but yeah, I don't know if I'll actually achieve that. Is the area in which you live flat, hilly, or mountainous? Flat as my ass. What is your significant other or best friend’s ring tone? No one on my phone has a "special" ringtone. Where do you keep your hair brush? There's a comb I use in a drawer in the bathroom. Which pair of shoes have you owned the longest? Multiple pairs of Converse, also from high school. When’s the last time you were sick at the same time as someone else? I'm very happy to say I don't even recall the last time I was sick. My immune system is the fuckin GOAT. What did you have for breakfast this morning? A pb&j. We've got very little rn, but thankfully Mom's picking up our Wal-Mart order today. Last time you were in pain? If I'm standing, you can bet my legs hurt, so. What color is your mom’s hair? It's growing back totally gray now. Is that also your hair color? Well, no, I'm only 25. Do you watch any daily vloggers on YouTube? Who? No. I watch people who vlog occasionally, but not regularly. It's gotta be people I'm very into to really be interested in vlogs. What room of your house do you usually do your surveys in? Sigh, I'm always in my bedroom. Really hoping Mom and I muster up the motivation to clean up the extra room soon to turn it into my "dayroom" or "office," if you will. What do you put on your tacos? I hate tacos. What is your favorite stuffed animal and where did you get it? I have a bittersweet connection to the adorable plush meerkat Jason gave me for Valentine's our first year together; I always slept with it when we were together by apart, and for a year or so after the breakup. It was a source of comfort for me, so I'm really fond of it. Fella's fur is so worn out and matted down with age and lots of love. He's on my dresser now, towards the front of all my plushies. Last thing you hung up on your wall? My Illidan poster, I believe. Do you have a full length mirror? Yeah, on the back of my door. Is it currently raining? No, finally. It's been raining for like a fuckin week, it seems like. It's finally a clear day. It's nice to hear birds outside. Does anyone you live with talk in their sleep? Does this happen often? I'M the one doing the talking/screaming in my sleep. Thanks, nightmares. When was the last time you cried, or felt tearful? I'm not positive, but I know I had a pretty rough PTSD night not too long ago where I teared up. Did you wake up with a song stuck in your head today? What was it? Ohhh yes; I've been listening to Mother Mother's "Ghosting" on repeat because it's jammed up there. When was the last time you used moisturiser or lotion of some kind? Not too long ago on my hands. They get dry this time of year, and besides, I wash my hands a lot nowadays especially. What was the last thing you owned, that was accidentally broken or damaged? Were you able to get it fixed? My laptop, and yes. Tell me about the last dream you recall having. Was it weird, amusing, etc. So this is pretty wild. I know I had a nightmare last night, but I don't remember it; the night before, however, I had a nightmare about a possibly rabid and ginormous rat (I mean like, smaller dog sized) in the house and trying to bite me. It was SUPER weird, because I was actually afraid of it, yet I absolutely adore rats in real life. What was the last video you watched on YouTube? I've really gotten into John Wolfe (a let's player) lately, and I'm going through his The Evil Within playthrough. Do your parents use any social media at all? My mom has a Facebook, and hilariously, Dad has a Snapchat to talk with my sister Nicole. He has no clue what he's doing with it and it's adorable, haha. Mom also has a Twitter, but she doesn't use it. Is there anyone in your life who regularly asks how your day has been? Regularly, no. I've always been that person, especially in the WoW guild I'm in. I'm very close and comfortable with them and ask how everyone's doing any time I log on. Lovely people who give me some social interaction every day. Tell me something positive about the day you've had. It's still early, but once again, it's pretty and bright outside. Why do you prefer Facebook over MySpace, because I know you do? Ha, you'd be incorrect. MySpace was more personal, so I actually preferred it. But it's obviously long-dead, so I just settle with Facebook. Have you read the Pretty Little Liars series? No. My sister looooves it, though. What product do you use to moisturize your lips? I don't remember, actually... It's in my purse somewhere. When did you start using Xanga? I never have. Be honest, do you judge people on their appearance? Judge, I don't think so. I can make assumptions like everyone else, but I'm not gonna think someone is beneath me just by their attire. Do you know anyone who does not like The Beatles? Me. At least, most songs. "Hey Jude" is good, but everyone agrees with that, haha. Did you have a friend in middle school that you’re now enemies with in high school? I'm long since out of HS. I had a middle school friend who I disconnected with following a fight in high school, but we weren't "enemies," and we reunited our senior year anyway. Aaaaand we're not friends anymore once again lmao. What is one thing you hope your children don’t inherit from you? If I hypothetically wanted kids, God knows I'd hope they wouldn't have my psychological issues. Do you think you’ll be married in 10 years? It'd be nice, anyway. What type of foundation do you wear? None. Who’s the most controlling person you know? Someone I'm no longer friends with, partially because of this. Do males look good in skinny jeans? Yep. Are you for or against guyliner? Ugggghhhhh guyliner makes me weak in the knees. How many jobs have you had? Where do you currently work? Three; nowhere. Who did you last hit? Um, nobody??? What way of self-care do you enjoy the most and what feels more like an obligation? I enjoy my alone time on the computer as the best self-care, especially after being social all day; I don't, however, enjoy the act of performing hygiene care. I still do it, it's just not fun. The feeling afterwards is great, though. Have you ever tried specific diet plans or fads? What made you do it and how did it turn out for you? I was briefly using NutriSystem, which didn't work for me. I hated too much of the food. More recently I stuck with flexible dieting and calorie counting for a while, but I drifted from it when I still lost no fucking weight in like a month. I want to get back to it, though... oh, and intermittent fasting. I don't think it really worked for me yet again, even though I did it correctly, but that and the aforementioned flexible dieting is all I feel like I can handle. I guess I just have to give it longer. Do you know anyone who has been directly affected by COVID-19 e.g. testing positive, losing a loved one, or their job due to the pandemic? Too many people I know have had it or had someone they loved die because of it. Take this shit seriously. Is there a kind of music you only prefer listening to during specific type of activities that you otherwise wouldn’t enjoy under normal circumstances (e.g. EDM while doing sports or instrumental music while studying, etc.)? No; I have to actually enjoy the music. If you had to start a YouTube channel and motivations/skills/resources/any other inhibiting factors weren’t an issue, what would it be about? Either animal (preferrably reptiles) education or let's plays, ig. Has anything ever happened to you that if you told someone about, they would think you’re making it up? I don't believe so. What travel destination or popular spot have you been to that you found overrated? What about a lesser known place that you thought was a hidden gem? I really don't know; I haven't traveled nearly enough for this.
I finished RDR2 and I need to talk about it
My thoughts when I first played it last summer was that it had an interesting story with interesting characters, it was just far too long for me. Due to quarantine, I finally decided to attempt to finish the game (I was already aware of a few story beats that had yet to happen when I returned to playing, but I hadn't witnessed them yet). By the time I finished, this game had set itself as my second favorite game of all time (The Witcher 3 is still my favorite, though that's definitely going to change when cyberpunk 2077 releases).
SPOILERS FOR RDR2 FOLLOW!!! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
The first half of the game intrigued me. It took the time to show how the Van Der Linde Gang was a dysfunctional family unit, and I loved the little moments in camp where everyone would be sitting around a campfire singing or something like that. Though at this point, I was just intrigued. Not to say there weren't any great moments or shocking deaths up until halfway through the game. The mission where you burn the Gray family's tobacco fields reminded me of Far Cry 3′s Weed Burning sequence, among several other memorable moments from the story as well. Plus, Sean and Kieran’s deaths were shocking and brutal (my boys did not deserve to go out like that, Sean getting shot in the head mid-sentence and Kieran getting his eyes gouged out and decapitated, his headless corpse sent back into camp on a horse) and I still felt for those deaths.
Tumblr media
But the midpoint of the game is where everything changes. The gang decides to rob the Lemoyne National Bank in Saint Denis. It goes off without a hitch until the Pinkertons suddenly show up out of nowhere, taking Hosea hostage. Matters are further complicated by Milton, who shoots Hosea when Dutch tries to talk his way out. The way the nicest member of the gang and adoptive father of the group was gunned down without ceremony is shocking enough, but to have Lenny join him minutes later and not even in a cutscene when he’s gunned down by Pinkerton Agents on the roof just hurts. The gang is forced to flee the bank as Arthur, Dutch, Javier, Micah, and Bill board a boat out of the city, with Charles offering himself up as a distraction so they can escape.
Tumblr media
Guarma is nothing to write home about. If you remove it, nothing is taken away from the story, and there are parts of it that just feel out of place for a Red Dead game. What I would have preferred was a chapter with Sadie as she and Charles protect the group while they travel to Lakay. Speaking of Sadie, by this point, she had grown on me, especially in a later mission with Arthur where they bond while they take out the remaining O'Driscolls. Props to Alex McKenna, she knocked it out of the park in this scene, hell, the whole game. Sadie probably has the best character arc in the entire game. I might even have a new favorite female video game character (sorry, Aloy, you're still cool).
Tumblr media
But before this came some of my favorite moments in the game. Two specific ones I want to talk about before I get into the rest of the second half include the TB reveal and the subsequent conversation about it. The reveal itself comes out of nowhere, although if you're watching closely when you go to get money from Thomas Downes and notice that Arthur has been coughing more and more up until this point, it may be pretty obvious what he has. A doctor confirms it after you suddenly fall off your horse coughing up blood: Arthur has tuberculosis. In 1889, this is a death sentence. As you leave the doctor's office, you either see a deer or a wolf depending on your honor level, a representation of your spirit. For the rest of the game, you are underweight no matter how much you eat as the disease slowly kills you. But this didn't sink in for me until the conversation with Sister Calderon. I know there's an alternate version of this conversation with Reverend Swanson if you have low honor, but the one with Calderon hit me hard when Arthur admitted he was afraid of dying (Roger Clark, you absolutely deserved winning Best Performer at the Game Award in 2018, you knocked this performance out of the park). Calderon tells him that he can now see his life clearly, and that helping people should be something to do before he passes on. It's just a beautiful conversation that made Arthur's condition even more real.
Tumblr media
Dutch's decent into madness takes up most of the game's second half, besides Arthur's illness (though I will admit I loved the mission where you rode with Rains Fall). The final straw comes after the last train robbery the gang does, where Dutch refuses to rescue Abigail after she is taken by the pinkertons and claims John is dead. Not content to leave Jack an orphan, Arthur and Sadie ride to rescue Abigail. It turns out to be a trap with Milton holding them at gunpoint, revealing Micah as the traitor since Guarma. After dealing with Milton thanks to Abigail, Arthur sends the women off, before donning his hat for one last ride. I'm pretty sure I mentioned before on this blog that "Portals" from Endgame is now something I'm conditioned to cry to. Well, now another song can do that, "That's The Way It Is" by Daniel Lanois, the song that plays as Arthur takes one last ride to camp while he hears the voices of those that he helped or hurt along the way. Seriously, I'm crying as I'm writing this because I'm listening to the song right now.
Tumblr media
When Arthur gets back to camp and accuses Micah of being the traitor, John arrives as well, claiming that Dutch left him to die. Before a shoot out can begin between the remaining gang members over loyalty, the pinkertons arrive. Arthur and John escape the confusion until their horses are shot down, giving Arthur one last moment with his chosen horse and allowing you to make one last decision: cover John's escape or go retrieve the gang's money in the cave? Choose to cover John's escape as the finale it leads to is the best one you can get with high honor. After a bit of running, it becomes clear to Arthur that he won't make it and someone needs to stall the pinkertons. After a short goodbye to John, he gives him his signature hat while John calls him his brother. Minutes later, he is ambushed by Micah and nearly shoots him until Dutch stops him. Micah and Dutch leave as Arthur passes away from his injuries and tuberculosis, seeing one last sunrise before dying.
Tumblr media
Now for the epilogue. Yes, it was long as hell and I did not need it to be around four hours long. However, I will say that there were some great moments there. I was relieved to hear that Charles and Sadie made it out, while Pearson settled down and got his own general store in Rhodes, Tilly got married to a Hatian lawyer, and Mary Beth became a romance writer. But two of the best moments come from the last two missions of the game. The first comes when John proposes to Abigail on the lake. It's just such a sweet scene and a great moment between the pair with John deciding to truly commit to Abigail.
Tumblr media
But the cherry on top comes with the final mission, American Venom, where John, Sadie, and Charles ride to confront Micah Bell one last time. It culminates in a standoff with John, Dutch, and Micah who is holding Sadie at gunpoint. Dutch finally ends the standoff by shooting Micah after everything, after which the game gives you one last Deadeye as John in the most satisfying moment of the game when you shoot the bastard (honestly, is there anyone who likes Micah?).
Tumblr media
The game ends with John using the money from Blackwater to pay off the bank that owns his ranch and marries Abigail during the credits as "Mountain Hymn”, another song that makes me cry from this game, plays while we see what has become of several members of the cast. This game was just brilliant. Rockstar outdid themselves this time, and while it isn’t perfect, what with the realism of gameplay being too much sometimes, the Guarma chapter being unnecessary, and the Epilogue being 3 hours too long while reminding us of the turmoil to come in the first RDR game, I still loved playing as an outlaw from the last days of the American West. It’s definitely another one to add to my list of favorite games of all time and I’m glad I got to play it during a period of similar conclusion in my life.
It’s almost poetic.
Yeah, this game was fabulous. I’m done now.
I have two prompts: In the middle of shooting hard days night and they're finding it difficult to stay away from each other even though there's other people around. The second one is just fluff. Face touches and long stares and the like. Thanks!
yaya woo! im going to morph this into one, all the fluff will be back at the hotel after their day of filming
~
“Cut!” Richard Lester yelled from behind the camera. “Paul, you’re suppose to be on the other side of George, not beside John!” He added. Paul and John both felt their stomachs flip. Richard was right, they weren’t suppose to be beside one another. But this day had been so bloody long, they physically couldn’t keep themselves away from one another. Paul moped and walked away from John, over to where he was meant to be. John glared at Richard the entire time, hating that he made his Paul move. “Right, and… action!” Another scene. Another set. Another scene. Another set.
“Cut!” Richard yelled again, this time stepping out in front of the camera. “John, you’re meant to be here beside Ringo. Not next to Paul.” Richard pointed to the empty spot beside Ringo. John once again, glared at the director and walked himself over to his rightful spot beside Ringo. “Right, that’s much better then.” Richard said as he went back behind the camera. “If I Fell, take 5!” He yelled, queuing the music and the boys were back in character. That song made it even more difficult for John and Paul, it was their song. John made sure to look at Paul while he sang and played, wanting him to remember that the words he sang were all for him. Paul gave John a quick blink in recognition, so he knew Paul was listening to him.
“Cut!” Richard called after the song had finished. “Great scene boys. The dynamic between John and Paul was great, shows off your song writing relationship.” He smiled at the Beatles. John and Paul chuckled to themselves, because Richard truly had no idea what their dynamic was. “Alright, gather round and we’ll discuss this next scene.” Richard waved the boys over. They all gathered in a circle of chairs with Brian and a few camera and effects workers. Paul and John, of course, sat next to one another. They couldn’t help themselves anymore, the distance between them the passed few days had been unbearable.
As Richard spoke, John was being his usual flirty self with Paul. He makes Paul smile greatly when he did his signature spider hand creep up Paul’s leg and touched his nose. “Enough, lads. Pay attention to Mr. Lester.” Brian snaps his fingers at the boys. They both nod apologetically and paid attention, but not without stealing quick glances or brushing hands beside their chairs. “Alright, you all seem extremely distracted. I think it’s time we called it a day and pick up where we left off bright and early tomorrow.” Richard sighed and closed his copy of the script. All four Beatles were extremely excited to hear they got to leave for the day, but the words “bright and early” made all of them want to throw up.
“Right. To the car. The driver will take you back to the hotel, I expect you’ll be in your rooms. No trouble.” Brian said, pointing toward the exit. “No trouble tonight!” John said, winking at Paul, who somehow managed to hide his deep red blushing cheeks from the rest of them. The car ride was almost as unbearable as the day they had spent filming. John planted himself right beside Paul, in front of George and Ringo. Oh, how they just wanted to touch. After the car ride that felt like an eternity, they finally arrived back at the hotel. “I’m off t'get a drink. Lads wanna join?” Ringo asked as he pointed to the bar in the lobby. “I’m game.” George agreed. “Nah, we got some songs to work on.” Paul lied for the both of them. “Whatever,” The other Beatles shrugged and walked away toward the bar.
Paul and John headed into the lift. Just the two of them. The doors closed. “Security cameras.” Paul reminded John as he noticed John creeping closer to his side. “Aye, I know, Macca. Can’t help meself.” John chuckled and looked at the floor. Finally, after another ride that seemed like an eternity, the door to the lift opened, and they headed for their room. John fumbled with the key for a few moments before Paul got a little agitated, and grabbed the key from him. The touch of their hands surprised both of them, causing the small key to fall onto the floor. “Bloody hell,” They both said and laughed at the same time. Paul finally got the door open, and gestured for John to go inside first.
Paul closes the door behind him, and looks around to see John trying to fix his hair in the mirror in their hotel’s sitting room. Paul smiles to himself and walks over to him. “Who are y'trying t'impress, then?” Paul asks from behind John. “Oh, nobody.” John shrugs and hides his smile. Paul knew how self conscious John was all the time, so he did everything in his power to try and make him feel good. “I missed you today,” Paul began as he touched John’s cheek with his left hand, his right holding his weight against the dresser. “I missed you,” John replies with a smile. Paul’s thumb began slowly rubbing against John’s cheek.
Their eyes finally lock, and they lock for a long time. They could stand there and stare into each other’s eyes for hours. “Love you,” John whispered, trying his absolute hardest not to blink. He didn’t want to miss a moment of Paul’s beautiful eyes"Love you.“ Paul replied with a small smile curving in his lips. John brought his hand up to rest on Paul’s cheek, opposite of the one Paul had his on. Just staring, breathing each other in. "Can’t stay away, not like that,” Paul whispered as he brought his face closer to John’s, referring to the terribly long days they’d been having to endure with this film. “I know.” John agreed, resting his forehead against Paul’s.
They both closed their eyes, hands still resting on each other’s cheeks, and just appreciated the fact that they could touch. Of course, they wanted to kiss like they’d never be able to kiss again. But, in a relationship like their’s, touching was something they didn’t get to do enough. “Macca,” John whispered. “Mmm.” Paul hummed in reply, lifting his head slightly to brush their noses together. “Macca,” John whispered again as if he couldn’t keep himself from saying the name. They finally allowed their lips to briefly brush against the other, lingering close as if ready to indulge in a passionate kiss. But they didn’t. They just held each other close.
LIST: 10 of My Favorite Movie Songs
I'm an idiot. On Oscar Night, I decided to wrap up a draft I was writing for a list going up soon. The theme was dark videos, again, it will be going up soon. Also, I worked a terrible work day for about 6-8 hours, so that was a huuuuuge damper on my mood that kept me from doing anything until about 4 or 5. So I was too dumb to come up with a list of movie songs on Oscar Night. Yeah. I'm that kind of idiot.
But here I am, doing it. Right now.
For this list, I have a few criteria. These songs were released solely for these films. That means that they were not picked from an artist's pre-existing album, or a cover of another song recorded for a movie, or a musical selection from a Broadway adaptation. These songs may have appeared on an artist's album after release (such as a greatest hits release), but not before. So, sorry to "Lady Marmalade," "Cell Block Tango," and "Hooked on a Feeling." Oh, that goes for you, too, "Elephant Love Medley" from Moulin Rouge. That's a mashup. You're not slick.
10. "Kiss from a Rose" - Seal (Batman Forever, 1994) Call it hokey. Call it what you want. But I better not catch you talking shit about Seal. In what is possibly his signature song, Seal's incomparable voice soars over a haunting melody and epic orchestration. Is it the best song to ever come out of a DC Comics film? Oh, hell yes it is.
9. "The World is Not Enough" - Garbage (The World is Not Enough, 1999) When you ask a group like Garbage to write a Bond theme, you probably don't expect them to deliver Shirley Bassey or Paul McCartney. Spoiler alert: they don't, but damn, do they deliver. Shirley Manson puts on the dangerous seduction worthy of a Bond girl over a smoldering orchestra, arranged by Don Black and David Arnold. It just feels so sexy, and so sinister. So of course I'm into it. The few times I actually play Overwatch with Widowmaker, I like to imagine her slinking around to this song before she snipes Genji in his tracks. Fuck Genji.
8. "Over the Rainbow" - Judy Garland (The Wizard of Oz, 1939) I felt wrong not including this song, partly because when I was a very little girl, my grandmother--a jazz singer back in the day--would sing it to me and my sister. Listening to it now as an adult effortlessly brings a tear to my eye, thanks to Judy Garland's mournful, yet optimistic vocals. That's the kind of thing that makes you want to root for a character like Dorothy. Not just that, but that's the kind of thing that makes characters and movies iconic. Yeah, there's yellow brick roads and little dogs and munchkins, but, in the way "Let It Go" defined Frozen's Queen Elsa, Dorothy Gale is synonymous with "Over the Rainbow." And that's not a bad thing to be associated with.
7. "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" - Aerosmith (Armageddon, 1998) I was coerced to go on the Rock 'n Roller Coaster at Disney's Hollywood Studios once. I hated it. I hate coasters. It didn't necessarily affect my opinion of Aerosmith, but I don't remember hearing this classic Aerosmith track on the ride. Probably because I was busy screaming to get me off this crazy thing and into the Voyage of the Little Mermaid show. Sounds about right. But in a park that celebrates films--and on a ride themed around Aerosmith--the omission of this song feels wrong. Is Armageddon an iconic film? Nah, not really. Is this song timeless? Yeah. In fact it's one of Aerosmith's most well-known tracks. For good reason--it's Steven Tyler at his vocal best. And who'da thunk that they'd go so well with an orchestra? Tyler's emotion is remarkably raw. Not bad for a song so obviously made to sell a movie. I guess they just did it differently in the 90s.
6. "Young and Beautiful" - Lana Del Rey (The Great Gatsby, 2013) I never saw this movie, because I hated the book. It was one of those books where you were forced to read it in high school English. Hence, I hated it. Lana Del Rey was also an acquired taste for me. However, "Young and Beautiful" is Lana at her finest. Her simmering alto flies above a lush orchestra as she croons, lamenting over a love she's not sure will last. In true Lana Del Rey style, the girl just can't do happiness. But hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. She doesn't fix it--she enhances it, to dazzling effect
5. "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)" - Emma Stone (La La Land, 2016) Sometimes things don't work. Dreams fall short. So you have to regroup and figure out a new plan. That's exactly what Emma Stone's aspiring actress Mia did in La La Land, when she becomes discouraged and downtrodden after a series of flops. However, a glimmer of hope arrives in an audition, where, as she recounts the story of her grandmother swimming through the freezing Seine. What results is a truly impassioned, from-the-heart performance from Emma, as she honors "the fools who dream, crazy as they may seem." Where would we be without "the rebels, the ripples from pebbles, the painters, the poets, and plays?" Well, this film wouldn't exist, for one. As a supporter of the arts and a daughter of a music teacher, this lyric speaks to me. In general, I resonated with the character of Mia, often discouraged, waiting on that one person to take a chance on me and let me show what I can do. If La La Land did anything for me, it told me that if you never try, you never know. (Also, "City of Stars" be damned.)
4. "Beauty and the Beast" - Angela Lansbury/Peabo Bryson and Celine Dion (Beauty and the Beast, 1992) You know that song that no matter where or when you hear it, you immediately begin tearing up? This is one of those songs for me. I remember when I saw Moana last year and they showed the trailer for the upcoming (unnecessary) live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, being unimpressed, until that "tale as old as time..." melody kicked in. Beauty is regarded as one of Disney's greatest animated features, with a timeless soundtrack to show for it. Its title song is appropriately timeless, and is the jewel in the crown of the Disney Renaissance. Suddenly I don't know an Ariana Grande or a John Legend.
3. "There You'll Be" - Faith Hill (Pearl Harbor, 2002) I've always dismissed Faith Hill has being "lifetimecore," that is, music made specifically for suburban white moms who spend their time on Pinterest and at Scentsy parties. Working in retail, especially, has made me resent her, being subject to her music as often as I am. That said, "There You'll Be" is so incredibly poignant and emotional, and her strong voice is perfectly suited for it. This one is another instant tearjerker. You got me this time, Faith. Just once.
2. "If You Want Me" - Marketa Irglova (Once, 2007) While not the most memorable song from this unforgettable indie gem, "If You Want Me" is remarkable in its vulnerability. In the film, Marketa's unnamed character walks down a lonely Irish street, having just bought batteries for her Walkman. She's really just kind of rehearsing the song to herself, but there is this heartbreaking vulnerability in her softspoken delivery. There's something behind that sad, sad voice, and you know it. It should've got an Oscar nod, but you know what, "Falling Slowly" is still pretty damn good.
1. "Part of Your World" - Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid, 1989) Let's just be honest with ourselves here. My blog title is "Mermaid in Stereo." Perhaps my attraction to mermaids can be attributed to the story of Ariel, a struggle that is told in her signature song, "Part of Your World." It's not necessarily the story of a mermaid wanting to live on the land--okay, it is. But it's more than that. It's the story of someone fed up with being held down in her home life by overbearing parents, with a burning desire to get out of her bubble and see an unfamiliar world. Fun fact: Ariel did not wish to become human for Eric! No, in fact it's this song--which she sings before she ever sees Eric--that proves it. And you have to believe her. It's no wonder only Jodi Benson has voiced the character since her introduction--no one else can do it justice.
And now...my honorable mentions.
"Go the Distance" - Roger Bart (Hercules, 1997)
"You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" - Cher (Burlesque, 2010)
"Her Portrait in Black" - Atreyu (Underworld: Evolution, 2006)
"A View to a Kill" - Duran Duran (A View to a Kill, 1984)
"Chim Chim Cher-ee" - Dick Van Dyke (Mary Poppins, 1964)
"Heathens" - Twenty One Pilots (Suicide Squad, 2016)
