From Auctions to Bank-Owned: Unveiling the Spectrum of Distressed Properties in India
Investing in distressed properties can be a lucrative venture, offering unique opportunities for those looking to enter the real estate market at a potentially lower cost. In India, distressed properties encompass a variety of real estate assets that are available for purchase due to financial or legal challenges faced by the current owners. Here's an overview of the types of distressed property sale in Chennai commonly found in the Indian real estate market:
Foreclosed Properties:
Foreclosed properties are those seized by banks or financial institutions due to the borrower's inability to repay the mortgage or loan. These properties are typically auctioned off to recover the outstanding debt. Investors can find value in foreclosed properties, often acquiring them at prices lower than the market value.
Bank-Owned Properties:
Bank-Owned Properties, also known as Real Estate Owned (REO) properties, come into the possession of the bank after undergoing foreclosure. These assets are commonly marketed and sold through auctions or real estate agents, providing buyers with the advantage of streamlined transaction processes.
Distressed Sales:
Distressed sales include properties sold by owners facing financial difficulties or urgent circumstances. These sales may be prompted by issues such as job loss, divorce, or other personal crises, leading to a quicker sale at a potentially lower price.
Auctioned Properties:
Auctions are a common method for selling distressed properties in India, providing a dynamic platform for both buying and selling real estate assets. Properties may be auctioned by financial institutions, government agencies, or private sellers, offering a diverse range of opportunities for potential investors looking to buy or sell property in Chennai. Investors can actively bid on these properties, and successful bidders can acquire real estate at competitive prices, making auctions a compelling avenue for those involved in the Chennai real estate market.
Insolvency and Bankruptcy Cases:
The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) in India has facilitated the resolution of distressed assets. Properties involved in insolvency or bankruptcy cases may be available for sale as part of the resolution process. Investors can explore these opportunities through the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) or the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT).
Non-Performing Assets (NPAs):
NPAs in the banking sector may include distressed properties that financial institutions are eager to sell to recover losses. Investors can explore NPAs as potential opportunities for acquiring real estate assets at favorable prices.
Government Auctions:
Government agencies, including the Income Tax Department and municipal authorities, often conduct auctions of seized properties due to non-payment of taxes or other legal issues. These properties can provide investors with a chance to acquire assets with potential value appreciation.
Rehabilitation Projects:
Distressed properties in need of renovation or rehabilitation present opportunities for investors with the skills and resources to undertake such projects. These properties can be purchased at a lower cost, and value can be added through renovations.
Land Parcels with Legal Issues:
Some distressed properties may include land parcels with legal complications or title issues. Investors who can navigate and resolve these legal challenges may find opportunities to acquire land at discounted prices.
Before venturing into the market of distressed properties, potential investors should conduct thorough due diligence, considering legal aspects, market conditions, and potential renovation costs. This diligence is essential not only for those looking to invest in distressed properties but also for individuals aiming to sell and rent their properties in Chennai. While the potential returns can be enticing, careful consideration and a well-informed approach are crucial for success in this niche real estate sector, whether you are buying, selling, or renting in the vibrant Chennai market.

Moscow Auction House Sells a $1 Million Painting Stolen from a Ukrainian Museum
In Russia, Ukrainian artist Ivan Aivazovsky’s painting “Moonlit Night” has been put up for auction, according to Ukraine’s former Deputy Attorney General and Prosecutor of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Gyunduz Mamedov, who has reported the auction plans.
Russia’s looting and destruction of Ukrainian museums and cultural heritage sites have resulted in significant losses, with nearly 40 museums plundered and almost 700 heritage sites damaged or destroyed since the invasion began in February 2022, causing cultural losses estimated in the hundreds of millions of euros.
The first report that “Moonlit Night” will be the main lot of the auction, which will take place at the Moscow Auction House on 18 February, appeared on the Telegram channel by Russia’s state-funded news agency RIA Novosti, noting that the painting was estimated at 100 million rubles (approximately $1.09 million) before the sale.
‘In 2017, [Interpol], at the request of [Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Crimea], put the paintings on the international wanted list. Thus, Russia openly disregards [international law], as according to the 1970 UNESCO Convention, the export of cultural properties and transfer of ownership is prohibited,” Mamedov emphasized on X.
In 2014, during the early stages of Russia’s occupation of Crimea, Aivazovsky’s painting “Moonlit Night” was illegally transferred to the Simferopol Art Museum, along with 52 other artworks.
In 2022, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, some of his works were destroyed in an airstrike on the Kuindzhi Art Museum in Mariupol, and others were looted by Russian forces from Mariupol and Kherson museums, including “The Storm Subsides,” which was moved to the Central Taurida Museum in Simferopol, Crimea.

Are Game Blogs Uniquely Lost?
All this started with my looking for the old devlog of Storyteller. I know at some point it was linked from the blogroll on the Braid devlog. Then I tried to look at on old devlog of another game that is still available. The domain for Storyteller is still active. The devblog is gone.
I tried an old bookmark from an old PC (5 PCs ago, I think). It was a web site linked to pixel art and programming tutorials. Instead of linking to the pages directly, some links link led to a twitter threads by authors that collected their work posted on different sites. Some twitter threads are gone because the users were were suspended, or had deleted their accounts voluntarily. Others had deleted old tweets. There was no archive. I have often seen links accompanied by "Here's a thread where $AUTHOR lists all his writing on $TOPIC". I wonder if the sites are still there, and only the tweets are gone.
A lot of "games studies" around 2010 happened on blogs, not in journals. Games studies was online-first, HTML-first, with trackbacks, tags, RSS and comment sections. The work that was published in PDF form in journals and conference proceedings is still there. The blogs are gone. The comment sections are gone. Kill screen daily is gone.
I followed a link from critical-distance.com to a blog post. That blog is gone. The domain is for sale. In the Wayback Machine, I found the link. It pointed to the comment section of another blog. The other blog has removed its comment sections and excluded itself from the Wayback Machine.
I wonder if games stuff is uniquely lost. Many links to game reviews at big sites lead to "page not found", but when I search the game's name, I can find the review from back in 2004. The content is still there, the content management systems have been changed multiple times.
At least my favourite tumblr about game design has been saved in the Wayback Machine: Game Design Tips.
To make my point I could list more sites, more links, 404 but archived, or completely lost, but when I look at small sites, personal sites, blogs, or even forums, I wonder if this is just confirmation bias. There must be all this other content, all these other blogs and personal sites. I don't know about tutorials for knitting, travel blogs, stamp collecting, or recipe blogs. I usually save a print version of recipes to my Download folder.
Another big community is fan fiction. They are like modding, but for books, I think. I don't know if a lot of fan fiction is lost to bit rot and link rot either. What is on AO3 will probably endure, but a lot might have gone missing when communities fandom moved from livejournal to tumblr to twitter, or when blogs moved from Wordpress to Medium to Substack.
I have identified some risk factors:
Personal home pages made from static HTML can stay up for while if the owner meticulously catalogues and links to all their writing on other sites, and if the site covers a variety of interests and topics.
Personal blogs or content management systems are likely to lose content in a software upgrade or migration to a different host.
Writing is more likely to me lost when it's for-pay writing for a smaller for-profit outlet.
A cause for sudden "mass extinction" of content is the move between social networks, or the death of a whole platform. Links to MySpace, Google+, Diaspora, and LiveJournal give me mostly or entirely 404 pages.
In the gaming space, career changes or business closures often mean old content gets deleted. If an indie game is wildly successful, the intellectual property might ge acquired. If it flops, the domain will lapse. When development is finished, maybe the devlog is deleted. When somebody reviews games at first on Steam, then on a blog, and then for a big gaming mag, the Steam reviews might stay up, but the personal site is much more likely to get cleaned up. The same goes for blogging in general, and academia. The most stable kind of content is after hours hobbyist writing by somebody who has a stable and high-paying job outside of media, academia, or journalism.
The biggest risk factor for targeted deletion is controversy. Controversial, highly-discussed and disseminated posts are more likely to be deleted than purely informative ones, and their deletion is more likely to be noticed. If somebody starts a discussion, and then later there are hundreds of links all pointing back to the start, the deletion will hurt more and be more noticeable. The most at-risk posts are those that are supposed to be controversial within a small group, but go viral outside it, or the posts that are controversial within a small group, but then the author says something about politics that draws the attention of the Internet at large to their other writings.
The second biggest risk factor for deletion is probably usefulness combined with hosting costs. This could also be the streetlight effect at work, like in the paragraph above, but the more traffic something gets, the higher the hosting costs. Certain types of content are either hard to monetise, and cost a lot of money, or they can be monetised, so the free version is deliberately deleted.
The more tech-savvy users are, the more likely they are to link between different sites, abandon a blogging platform or social network for the next thing, try to consolidate their writings by deleting their old stuff and setting up their own site, only to let the domain lapse. The more tech-savvy users are, the more likely they are to mess with the HTML of their templates or try out different blogging software.
If content is spread between multiple sites, or if links link to social network posts that link to blog post with a comment that links to a reddit comment that links to a geocities page, any link could break. If content is consolidated in a forum, maybe Archive team could save all of it with some advance notice.
All this could mean that indie games/game design theory/pixel art resources are uniquely lost, and games studies/theory of games criticism/literary criticism applied to games are especially affected by link rot. The semi-professional, semi-hobbyist indie dev, the writer straddling the line between academic and reviewer, they seem the most affected. Artists who start out just doodling and posting their work, who then get hired to work on a game, their posts are deleted. GameFAQs stay online, Steam reviews stay online, but dev logs, forums and blog comment sections are lost.
Or maybe it's only confirmation bias. If I was into restoring old cars, or knitting, or collecting stamps, or any other thing I'd think that particular community is uniquely affected by link rot, and I'd have the bookmarks to prove it.
Figuring this out is important if we want to make predictions about the future of the small web, and about the viability of different efforts to get more people to contribute. We can't figure it out now, because we can't measure the ground truth of web sites that are already gone. Right now, the small web is mostly about the small web, not about stamp collecting or knitting. If we really manage to revitalise the small web, will it be like the small web of today except bigger, the web-1.0 of old, or will certain topics and communities be lost again?

This 2009 Mediterranean style estate in Wellington, Florida has over-the-top decor. 9bds, 8ba, $15.9M.
Tumblr media
Can you believe the chandelier hanging in the porte cochere? It looks like it could hit the car. Plus, there are two ornate carved planters on the walls.
Tumblr media
The entrance foyer. The home is listed on every real estate site, including for-sale-by-owner.
Tumblr media
Straight ahead is the sitting room. Look at how high the pictures go up. I wonder why all the chairs are lined up around the perimeter of the room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kitchen cabinetry is nice. I like the darker wood and counters.
Tumblr media
The kitchen faces the family room.
Tumblr media
I think it's the family room. What a ceiling.
Tumblr media
The table and chairs must be the daily dining area.
Tumblr media
And, this is the formal dining room. Note the organ, I guess for serenading the guests.
Tumblr media
A guest powder room. I'm disappointed in the art- a lot of it is just framed prints.
Tumblr media
The primary bedroom is huge. It has a beautiful ceiling, there's a piano in here, and doors to the garden.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The en-suite is also huge. The tub is so high, though. It looks like the round shower is gold-leafed.
Tumblr media
It's unusual that the other bedrooms all seen to have a bed, sofa, and dining table.
Tumblr media
Bath #2 is just as big as the primary bath.
Tumblr media
Look at this room- it has a bed, table & chairs, large desk, and a full kitchen. The bedrooms are like studio apartments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This bedroom also has everything, plus a balcony. All the bedrooms have this setup. I've never seen anything like it.
Tumblr media
What a huge chandelier on this covered patio.
Tumblr media
Love gazebos and this home has more than just this one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
18' deep pond stocked with koi, catfish and other exotic fish and its own dock. Isn't it beautiful at night?
Tumblr media
This home is on 5 acres, surrounded by tropical trees, including fruit trees.
Tumblr media
The property is so big, there are roads to drive around it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The property is certainly large enough for a pool, but I think that this is for swimming.

On March 6, more than 20 McClatchy news sites across the United States commendably pulled a false United Press International by Adam Schrader two days after the wire service had itself already independently corrected. UPI’s March 3 article, “New Jersey synagogue will allegedly auction off occupied Palestinian land,” had initially falsely alleged:
Palestinian groups are calling for supporters to protest a purported auction of homes on occupied Palestinian land at the Keter Torah Synagogue in New Jersey. A review of homes listed in the sale at My Home In Israel Real Estate shows cottages in Efrat, a settlement in the West Bank. The cottages are listed for $1.3 million. The sale is expected to take place on March 10, though does not appear on the Keter Torah Synagogue calendar. “If we allow this sale to go through, we are enabling a local synagogue to violate both domestic anti-discrimination laws and international law,” local activist Rich Siegel told Democracy Now. “Now, there’s other reasons we shouldn’t allow it, OK? There’s a genocide going on right now.”
One day after the publication of Schrader’s story which was faulty and false on multiple levels, UPI itself commendably made extensive revisions and corrections to the article, starting with the headline. The improved headline is “Protest planned against synagogue event marketing West Bank homes.”
UPI’s corrected story made clear that, contrary to Schrader’s original reporting, there was to be no “sale” of “Palestinian land” at the New Jersey synagogue. The significantly amended story now reports:
Palestinian groups are calling for supporters to protest an event at a New Jersey synagogue marketing the sale of homes in the West Bank. A review of homes listed to be showcased in the real estate event by My Home In Israel Real Estate shows cottages in Efrat, a settlement in the West Bank. The cottages are listed for $1.3 million. The event is expected to take place on March 10 at Keter Torah Synagogue in Teaneck, N.J. Palestinian groups had encouraged supporters to protest the event, calling it an auction. Juda Engelmayer, a spokesperson for the synagogue, told UPI that the place of worship has been rented by a group of developers to hold the event. “That said, it’s solely educational and informational, discussing the options, tax and financial implications for U.S. citizens buying property abroad,” Engelmayer said. “No sales happen there and it’s not an auction of any sort.”
Futhermore, UPI’s correction appended to the bottom of the updated story notes: “This story has been updated to clarify that the event is not an auction and to include statements made on behalf of Keter Torah Synagogue.”
Additional changes to Schrader’s original report include the deletion of Richard Siegel’s statement to Democracy Now repeating the false charge of a synagogue sale of allegedly Palestinian land against the backdrop of what he called genocide. Similarly, the following two paragraphs platforming the fringe anti-Israel groups Jewish Voice for Peace piling on with the false genocide smear and other unfounded accusations of war crimes no longer appear in the article:
Meanwhile, a local chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace, a Jewish group that seeks an end to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, has told its followers on Instagram to protest Keller Williams in Englewood. “Zionists at Keller-Williams think they’re entitled to steal land from Palestinians and sell it to white Americans,” the group said in its post on Saturday. “Let’s show up on Tuesday and let them know how we feel about them breaking domestic and international laws while the terrorist regime they shamelessly support commits daily war crimes in its genocide of an indigenous population.”
Among Schrader’s numerous errors, he had wrongly reported that the Israeli settlement of Efrat is built on “Palestinian land.” Israeli settlements in the West Bank are built on disputed land, not “Palestinian land.”  The territory’s status, like that of all of the West Bank, is to be resolved by negotiations anticipated by U.N. Security Council resolutions 242 (1967) and 338 (1973), the 1995 Israeli-Palestinian interim accords, the 2003 international “road map” and related diplomatic efforts taking 242 and 338 as reference points. The co-authors of resolution 242, U.S. Under Secretary of State Eugene Rostow, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Arthur Goldberg, and British ambassador Lord Caradon made clear at the time and subsequently that Jews and Arabs both had claims in the territories, no national sovereignty over the territories had been recognized since the end of Ottoman rule and negotiations would be necessary to resolve competing claims. At no time in history were Palestinians ever sovereign over the land on which Israeli settlements are located. Previous media outlets to correct erroneous this point include The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Voice of America, and NBC, among many more.
The cooked up story, granting a national spotlight for fringe anti-Israel activists accusing a New Jersey synagogue of illegally selling Palestinian land against the purported context of genocide, puts a target on the back of the Jewish institution at a perilous time when American antisemitism, including violent attacks against Jewish establishments, is on an all-time high. UPI is to be commended for making the much needed changes to the article which should never have appeared, and hopefully going forward, Schrader’s problematic coverage on Jews and Israel will undergo heightened fact-checking prior to publication.
Meanwhile, by the morning of March 6, Schrader’s false and defamatory reporting still appeared on 20 or so McClatchy newspapers which had yet to update with UPI’s March 4 corrected version.
In response to communication from CAMERA, editors at McClatchy subsequently removed Schrader’s story entirely from its publications across the country including Charlotte Observer, Ledger Enquirer, Merced Sun-Star, Miami Herald, Tacuma News Tribune, Fresno Bee, The Olympian, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Island Packet, Idaho Statesman, Modesto Bee, Bellingham Herald, Herald Sun (Durham), The State, Wichita Eagle, San Luis Obispo Tribune, Tri-City Herald, Bradenton Herald, Telegraph (Macon), The Sacramento Bee and Sun News (Myrtle Beach).
As of this writing, March UPI’s post on X (formerly Twitter) falsely reporting “New Jersey synagogue will allegedly auction off occupied Palestinian land,” still appears, although CAMERA alerted UPI to the baseless post on March 6.

It came to my attention a little while ago that AAs have criticized my stance on Jensen's house purchase under the guise of "making fun of fan fiction". Included in the points these AAs were making pertaining my blog specifically was pertaining to how "buying a beautiful historic home was a poor choice". Yes, it was a poor choice not only from a spiritual standpoint but also for more logical, physical reasons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are multiple cemeteries within a 2 mile radius from this house. Maybe not close enough to be a big deal but given there are quite a few in this general area, depending on your set of beliefs this may or may not be a deal breaker.
A potentially big public health issue is there's a landfill not even 3 miles from the house. Some of the concerns with sanitary landfills include methane gas and leachate leakage, general habitat destruction at the landfill site, potential scent issues during summer months especially, more rodents, etc. While this might not be an "open air" type of landfill where garbage is not buried or otherwise separated from land outside of the said landfill, there are still potential health hazards associated with living within a 3 mile radius from a landfill. According to one cohort study spanning from 1996 to 2008 of about 250,000 people states that people who live within 3 miles from a landfill in central Italy were more likely to be admitted to a hospital or die with lung disease compared to those who lived further away from landfills. One of the biggest culprits with the reported health ailments higher in prevalence and incidence in these areas is hydrogen sulfide. While it's said that trash regulations are different from US regulations where this house is located and therefore some like that expert try to say this doesn't apply to the US, is it really that safe to live near a landfill (looking at you Love Canal)? Other studies conducted in the past which are mentioned in this paper listed on the EPA's website suggest there too are health hazards of living near landfills in the USA as well, not just Italy or even England. Point is, it may be debatable as to how "safe" it is living near any landfills let alone this one but it is nonetheless a factor one should consider when buying any home. Location, location, location as any real estate agent can tell you...
According to the Home Details per Zillow, this house has depreciated greatly over the years. Back in 2001 this house sold for $48.9 million dollars. This house was listed in September 2013 for $62 million dollars and removed April 2016. In August 2021 it was sold for $17.5 million, which is a good bit less from the $48.9 million it was previously bought for. Part of this property sold (separated into 7 separate lots, as it was once a 20 acre property) for $5 million back in May 2023 with another part of this property being listed for sale for $44.5 million. The portion of the property Jensen bought in July 2023 was purchased for $9.375 million and appears to be the main house on this property. Overall, the value of this house greatly depreciated over the years. It appears that in order to make this house actually sell the property had to be reduced in size to make it more affordable to buy. Chris Mark's property that's also for sale in Woodstock, CT property also shrunk in size. This particular house which is about an hour and 45 min Northeast from Jensen's CT property also greatly decreased in value. It seems that the decrease in number of acres included in the current price was a move done to make the house more affordable or in other words, so someone buys it. It was listed for sale in Oct 2022 for $50 million, down to $35 million in March 2023, $29.995 million in April 2023 and taken off the market in May 2023. However, the house returned to the market in July 2023 for $26 million, increased to $39 million in September 2023 and again removed early Oct 2023. The Chris Mark mansion was listed yet again 2 days before Halloween for $29 million and is still on the market as of today, February 18, 2024.
4. I mentioned this before but some people in the past speculated the Ackles may intend on opening another brewery or even a B&B at this house. According to the zoning type for this property (AAA), they would not be allowed to open any manufacturing facility on this property (or really most any kind of business), nor would they be able to have a B&B on this property per current Fairfield city ordinances. Someone else about 4 miles from the Ackles' property over 10 years ago tried to get a law passed to allow for B&Bs in residential areas, which ultimately did not pass. This same house a woman wanted to turn into a bed and breakfast was sold a few years later.
Overall, the general rule seems to be that buying houses may not be the greatest investment when crunching the bottom line numbers but this is especially true with the larger houses. Given the Ackles' history of buying homes to renovate and then eventually sell, they most likely intend to sell this house at some point down the not too distant future. Given they also probably won't make this their forever home, the cost of the upkeep of this house compared to what they purchased this house for and ultimately sell it for probably will not churn out the profits they are hoping to gain by selling down the road. If the Ackles' had any intentions of using this house for anything other than as a personal residence (which was not listed on the real estate paperwork at the time of purchase back in July 2023), their plans would/will be foiled rather quickly.
I brought up the Chris Mark house as another case where McMansions just aren't a good investment. Not only is this house not a good choice for an investment as is the case for a family like the Ackles, the location of it is in my humble opinion not the greatest overall despite it being an affluent neighborhood due to some of the landmarks in this area.

In Victoria, realtors say, of the roughly 70 listings, there have only been a couple of sales.
“Property owners are definitely stressed,” Ira Willey, a Victoria realtor, said Thursday. “I think they are faced with a really hard decision right now. Do you rent out long-term, do you try to sell it? I think what’s happened to the owners is really unfair.”
B.C. Premier David Eby, however, was not very sympathetic to the situation when asked about it.
“So while nobody wants to see these individuals lose money, quite frankly they made a decision to invest in the housing market in a way that didn’t create housing units,” Eby said.
“In fact, took housing units away from people looking for a place to live. We’re in a housing crisis. They shouldn’t be surprised.”

For the first time ever, the lost interview from the creators of Tenchi Muyo! has been found!
youtube
Original article here
You can watch the Tenchi Muyo! portion with English subtitles above.
For the original, untouched tape, you can watch here. You can also watch on archive.org.
If you’re interested in how and why this was lost, and how we found it, read below!
Part 1: (Space)ships Passing in the Night
It goes without saying that Tenchi Muyo! is a juggernaut franchise. Due to its popularity in the 90s as well as its multiple continuities, if there’s a product of any kind, you can find a Tenchi-branded version of it. From Sega Saturn soap to panty eyeglasses wipes, Tenchi Muyo! has it all. As a result, the phrase “I’ve never seen that before” gets uttered quite a bit when you’re on the hunt for something Tenchi related.
What also happens is that it is easy to miss something that you’re not looking for, because you don’t know it exists or what’s in it. Every time one searches through Japanese auction sites, you’re basically cutting your way through a dense jungle in the hopes of maybe catching a glimpse of what you’re looking for, while also catching glimpses of interesting curiosities, such as this:
Tumblr media
PIONEER LDC – “OVA Operation Start” (OVA作戦始動)
This little black box, produced by Pioneer LDC was starting at over 100 USD. Upon closer inspection, you can see that the front pops up, and it has cardboard cutouts of Pioneer’s OVA properties as they were launching in 1992. According to the listing, the box also had a button one could press that would make voice lines play (presumably from each of the franchises featured). Green Legend Ran, Bastard!!, Kishin Corps, and Moldiver are all featured on the sides, but prominently featured in the middle was Pioneer’s bread and butter, the Zeus of their pantheon, their flagship series, Tenchi and Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo!.
For those who don’t remember or don’t happen to know, Pioneer LDC jumped into the world of Original Video Animation (or OVA) in 1992 with these properties (though Moldiver and Kishin Corps, of course would release in February and March of 1993) so this little video was more than likely a cool little showcase of what they had.

At first glance, while it is really cool, it’s not something one would immediately jump at to buy. Especially considering that the contents of the tape were unknown, the description did not offer any insight into it other than where it was from, the working condition of the box button and that it was “Not For Sale.” Which again in Tenchi fandom is not unheard of, nor does it mark something as particularly rare. For a price point so high, I just shrugged it off as a cool curiosity and continued my daily look through of aforementioned auction sites.
Part 2: A Crisis of Revelation
Because of the launch of tenchimuyowiki.com, I’ve been voraciously cataloging every piece of Tenchi media I own and any I can find in an effort to preserve Tenchi history. One night while I was working on one such project, I was looking through images and playing around in Photoshop, ripping Japanese text from images, when I inadvertently clicked the wrong button on an image I was looking at, and it popped over to this image:
Tumblr media
This is not only the only known picture of the co-creators of Tenchi Muyo! together, but this is the only known image of Masaki Kajishima’s face. Due to Kajishima’s reclusiveness, he’s never shown his face in interviews, and only very rarely has he even done audio interviews. Everything about the man is kept at a distance from fans. The most high-quality picture of Kajishima that most fans know is from the back of his head.
Tumblr media
I stared at the image again for the first time in a while. I’d looked at the first image of the two many times before, but on this particular night my brain clicked the right way, and I said to myself
“Wait a minute, this looks like it’s from a video…”.
If you’ve ever watched old Japanese game shows like Takeshi’s Castle or anything like that, the text is unmistakably made from video of an older time. But even with this idea buzzing around in my head, I was still at a loss. Considering how old this was, it could have been from a news report too, which if that was the case, no way would something like that have survived.
However, I wasn’t going to let this go this time, and I tracked down the source of this image: Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki Otanoshimi Ooemaki.
Tumblr media
And there, right next to the image, was text talking about where this was from.
But wait a minute, I recognize that image above it… That’s the characters from the black box!
THAT BLACK BOX HAS THE INTERVIEW!
Tumblr media
The title of the tape, translatable as “OVA Operation Start” was a promotional tape that Pioneer made and sent out to pitch their new line of home video products to potential customers. This box and its tape were not for sale, and unless you were lucky enough to be a Japanese Pioneer employee, or a Japanese video store owner, or be in Japan in the early 1990s, you never saw this video or its contents.
With this revelation freshly burned into my brain, I hurriedly moved back to the auction sites.
But it was nowhere to be found.
No, it can’t be…
I quickly inserted the Kanji into Google and found out that the box had finally sold… not even three weeks beforehand. It had been up every single time in the last eight months I’d checked while I was browsing for things, not knowing that the holy grail of Tenchi Muyo! interviews was on it. It even failed to sell on ebay, before finally being bought for around 10,000 yen.
To say I was devastated was an understatement.
Something like that did not come around every day. The odds of it ever showing up again were probably slim to none.
However, I didn’t give up, and then it appeared.
Part 3: Never Tell Me the Odds
Tumblr media
After some searching, and with the help of Tenchiforum’s own Crazed, a similarly described VHS tape was found on auction sites. Unlike the black box tape, this one had a very old (but machine-made) label on it. Marked with Pioneer LDC’s logo as well as their signature LaserDisc logo, it had the exact same name with a slightly different description above.
Regardless, if what was on the tape was on the tape, the grail had been found.
And sure enough, that’s exactly what it was!
Tumblr media
Curiously, it has a TCR time marker burned into the top of the video, meaning this could have possibly been an internal tape specifically within Pioneer. The seller also had many other promotional videos meant for stores as well. How they got this tape in their possession was not clear, but ultimately, it was the real McCoy.
While reading this, you may be thinking to yourself, “But Dagon, what makes this so rare? Why is this lost?”
Well, for one thing, this video has never appeared on any other release of Tenchi, ever. It is exclusive to these Not For Sale tapes and was not mass-produced in the way the actual episodes of the show were. The circumstances surrounding it also are probably why it never appeared anywhere else. This was made specifically to sell the idea of these properties to people. Also, as mentioned before, Kajishima doesn’t like his face being shown, and Hayashi moved on to El-Hazard after the two split up. Whether it was Kajishima, Hayashi, Pioneer, or a combination of the three, this interview stayed on this tape for 30 years exclusively, and the job it was supposed to do, sell Tenchi Muyo! to the masses, succeeded.

moonstone
Tumblr media
Let's wrap up the end of June with more stories about one of its birthstones. Alexandrite is actually a ''new' gemstone. It wasn't discovered, or at least classified, until 1830 in an emerald mine in the Ural Mountains. Since it was discovered in Russia and on his birthday, no less, the stone was named for Prince Alexander II. At first everyone thought it was simply an emerald but Alexandrite has the unique ability to change colors depending on the light its under and the stone tipped everyone off it was something entirely new when it went from the green they expected to red.
Which is all fascinating to me - but it does mean the stone hasn't been around long enough to really got much traction when it comes to folklore or legends around it.
For that, we'll look to June's third birthstone, the moonstone.
Before I get started though I feel as if I should point out none of my books on folklore include gemstones. This means I get just about all my information when it comes to superstitions about them from digging around on the internet or little bits of things I remember hearing in the past, like pearls being tears. Usually this is okay. I try to cross-check all my stories, only using ones that show up in two or preferably three different places and trying to avoid 'modern' sites that seem to be more about vibes than historical superstitions. I'm not here to tell you how to cleanse your house, I'm here to pass along old stories associated with items or moments our grandparents and their grandparents might have told each other. Point being, I ran across a couple different sites that listed off moonstone superstitions almost word for word of each other, which makes me suspect they all got the stories from one of the websites and just passed it around between them. It's not a good way to fact check whether they're real old superstitions or just a story one website made up and the others assumed it was factual and ran with it. The entire paragraph above me is basically just me saying 'Take all of this with a grain of salt'. I will try to keep everything true to its historic roots, leaving out things I find suspect, but I will also make misjudgements. In the end, these are all just stories and should be treated as such.
So - moonstones.
To the surprise of no one, moonstones are associated with the moon. Their milky luminescence and the way the light reflected through them seems to wax and wane as the stone is moved around are what give the stone its name to begin with. Any society comparing one to the other would automatically give the stone many of the properties they gave the moon. Hindu and Roman stories claim that moonstones are formed of moonbeams themselves, the rays solidified into something touchable. The Greeks and the Romans associated the stone with their goddess of the moon. In India, it wasn't permitted to lay the stones out for display in shops for sale unless they were cushioned in yellow cloth, a sacred color for a sacred stone. It's even been associated with Monday, suggesting if you were born on that day you shouldn't need to be a June child to enjoy the stone as your own since Monday is named after the moon.
Like the moon, the moonstone is good for lovers and prophecy. A moonstone in the mouth during a full moon will give you a hint of your future or perhaps just a future love. In fact, in India, the moonstone is considered a traditional wedding gift. Lovers who both wear moonstone rings will find their love deepened and increased and exchanging moonstones after a quarrel is supposed to help ease over the difficulty and restore the relationship. Since the gem seems to carry its own light inside of it, it was considered good luck both for a marriage and for all other aspects of life as well. Association with the moon also meant it was associated with fertility. It is supposed to help people retain their youth.
You know what else is associated with the moon? Sleeping. Put a moonstone under your pillow before you go to bed to enhance your dreams and let you sleep tranquilly. Not interested in sleeping? The moonstone is also supposed to protect travelers, especially ones that travel at night. The same protection extends to anyone traveling over water. Intriguingly, wearing a moonstone ring is also supposed to be a charm when playing cards, tipping the game in the gambler's favor and making the people playing against him more likely to follow the card shark's lead.
Do you want a full harvest and have money to burn? Bury a moonstone in the middle of your garden on the night of a full moon for an abundant harvest or hang it from a fruit tree for the same if you trust your neighbors.
The moonstone has enjoyed popularity all through history and in modern times, both the Art Nouveau movement and the 'flower child' hippy culture of 1960s America have seen a revival of interest in the stone. In 1970 the moonstone was named Florida's official state gemstone in honor of the moon landing that launched out of Cape Canaveral - even though the stone is not native to the state.
So what about that? When birthstones were handed out, June babies didn't do too badly at all, did they?

Someone really decorated this 1882 Italianate Victorian in Alameda, California. It has 3bd, 1ba, and lists for $2.5M (gee, and not even 1.5ba).

Isn't this lovely? The wall & ceiling paper in this room are beautiful. It's small as far as sitting rooms go, but it has a gorgeous original fireplace and I don't even mind the pretty carpet instead of wood floors.

The room next to the sitting room is a home office and the decor matches.

Very inviting dining room.

The hall looks a little dull, but if you look closely, the painted details and original newel post and railing are highlights for the gracefully curving stairs.

As per usual, with these costly homes, they show very little of the inside, but if you want to watch the video on the realtor's website, they will give you a glimpse of the kitchen and a bedroom.

Not a bad yard, it's nice.
