You fill your head with thoughts you find you can't even feel
Try to make room in your skull, but it’s full of them
All of the things that you think and then think about thinking
I know it’s hard, but they're not who you are
They're white noise
— White Noise, Will Wood —
Welcome one and all to "Mashing Two Interests Like Playdough", the first episode is Puppet History x Will Wood, specifically the Substitute x White Noise 'cause holy moly. It fits him so well. Omg.
I had so much fun creating this poster! I'm really proud of how the poses and the rendering turned out even though both gave me a rough time at first </3 I actually had an earlier version of this poster, but I scrapped it because it wasn't doing it for me ngl :,D I'm glad I did though!
Anyways if you'd like to know more about why I think this song fits the Substitute, you can read my interpretation of the lyrics and how they can relate to him below the "Read More" button. You can also find the glitchless + filterless version of the poster there.
Tumblr media
Note: A lot of this is speculation on my part, and you don't need to conform to this reading. This is just how I perceive him.
They paint the walls with colors that you're not meant to notice
They fill the halls with tunes you can't get into your head
Let's establish the obvious: The Substitute can't feel. The extent of his unfeelingness is unknown, but what is known is that he can't taste and can't have the sensation of touch. This may lead to him being isolated due to his inability to relate to experiences both humans and his fellow puppets seem to have, particularly the experiences of the one he is based on.
Yeah, it sorta sounds like a retro top-40 but wrong
You're not meant to sing along
It isn't that kind of song
It's white noise
Despite his unfeelingness, he still wants to have the experiences others have. After all, he literally almost killed someone just to have that chance, but his plan is not entirely well-thoughout. How was he going to dispose Ryan's body without getting caught? How was he going to sew the skin onto himself and dispose the rest of it? What was he going to do after he finally what he asked for?
In a way, he was doomed to fail. He was never meant to gain sentience anyway, let alone have the desire to feel like his counterpart. His existence is a complete accident. Now he has to deal with the consequences of actions he never even had a hand in doing.
But if you listen closely I swear, to God I swear
You can hear the ocean if you hold it up to your ear
This lyric directly inspired the pose of the Substitute listening to the conch shell. He has memories of some of the most wonderful sensations on Earth yet he can't connect with any of them. Perhaps when no one was looking, he tries to recreate some of them in a desperate attempt to find a scrap of semblance of feeling and gets increasingly frustrated with his inability to understand them.
Is it any wonder that he would do anything to regain that scrap of enjoyment? To end his torturous experience by any means necessary?
Its personality's a lack of identity
The entire second verse in general speaks about the meaningless of art and how people try to give it meaning anyway. The Substitute's only purpose was to replace the Professor either to console a dead mass or to continue the show. Now that the Professor is back... What can he do?
Moreover, he's also never allowed to have an identity of his own. Since he's meant to be a perfect copy of someone else, especially someone who's presumed to be dead, he can never really deviate from that role because it would break the illusion the puppets created to cope with their grief. No matter what his desires are, he can never really explore any of them because no one is allowing him to do so.
Also, the way the orchestra swells during this part kinda calls back to theatrical music for me. I feel like the Substitute would enjoy performace arts. His bombastic musical number implies he had a flair for the dramatics, and despite his lack of feeling, his expression of his ambitions is quite dramatic.
You fill your head with thoughts you find you can't even feel
This can relate to how the Subtitute is forced to relive the memories of the Professor despite not being able to experience the emotions connected with them. In a way, he has to so that he could remind himself of his motivations. Remembering the joy the Professor got through feeling would keep him going on this path in the hopes that some day, he could feel that joy too.
I know it's hard
But they're not who you are
They're white noise
This line can be taken in two ways. One is based on the speculated official meaning of the outro which is centered on intrusive thoughts. No doubt the Substitute deals with homicidal thoughts, but I wonder if he truly believes in them. Does he genuinely enjoy indulge in them, or does he act on them because it's all that he knows? For all the talk about him having the Professor's memories, at the end of the day, he was crudely coded for one simple purpose. His thoughts are very simplistic—as seen with how quickly he jumps to murder as the most logical solution for his problem—and I wonder if he was given a chance to grow beyond his purpose, he could've reliazed that homocide was not the right course of action.
The other way, which is likely more relevant, relates back to the Substitute being intrinsically tied to the Professor. His thoughts, his memories and his actions are all in a way influenced by the Professor. But it didn't have to be this way. As unlikely as it is, he could've had a life where he discovered his own interests and his own personality outside of being "the evil Professor". If he had gotten to learn more about the world on his own, if he had been able to act not as the Professor but as himself, he would've been able to develop more and find that joy he was missing. He could've had a life.
Unfortunately, he was never given that chance, and it is unlikely that he ever will be.

When Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014, annexing the Crimean Peninsula and bringing turmoil and destruction to Ukraine’s eastern regions, many people—both outside Ukraine and inside it—found it easier to ignore the violence unfolding in the country’s east than admit that war had returned to Europe. This included creative artists, who rarely mentioned the war in their works, not least because they feared scaring off the Russian fans who constituted much of their audience.
As Ukrainians all over the country woke up to explosions on Feb. 24, 2022, the truth could no longer be ignored: The “big war” had truly begun. Today, the country’s art is catching up to the truth of war.
Before 2022, few Ukrainian artists and entertainers openly mentioned the ongoing war in their works. In fact, many pop stars like Ivan Dorn or Luna continued to perform in Russia and created works aimed, first and foremost, at the Russian market and in the Russian language. When criticized for this by their Ukrainian fans, many dodged the subject, claimed to be “apolitical,” or explained their actions as “trying to build a bridge” between Russia and Ukraine.
“My music isn’t about politics, it’s about healing souls,” Luna said in a lengthy interview with Russian opposition journalist Xenia Sobchak in 2021. “That’s why I don’t pay attention to the critics back home trying to make me feel guilty for giving concerts in Russia.” Similarly, Dorn claimed that by interacting with Russian listeners he was “trying to capture as many people as possible with my music so that they would never attack my own country.”
But the main reasons were pragmatic ones: The large and relatively rich Russian market has long been attractive to Ukrainian performers, much like the American market for the English-speaking world. Making films or music built around a Ukrainian context could scare off Russian fans, so the overwhelming majority of content made in the 2000s and 2010s was tailored to sound and look as neutral as possible, devoid of any references to local events or personalities. There were, of course, notable exceptions.
Musicians, such as singer and veteran military paramedic Anastasiia Shevchenko, better known by her pseudonym СТАСІK, wrote songs openly referencing the war in their lyrics and music videos. Indie rapper Stas Koroliov released an entire album in 2021 of tracks inspired by the war and society’s apathy toward it. It contained lyrics like “I now understand that to become a messiah you just need to state the obvious: My homeland is at war with Russia.”
While mainstream comedies that wanted both Ukrainian and Russian box office sales steered clear of any references to recent domestic events, independent movies were more willing to process the violence taking place in Ukraine’s eastern regions and the loss of Crimea. Wartime dramas such as Tymur Yashchenko’s U311 Cherkasy (named after the naval mine sweeper blocked by Russian forces during the capture of Crimea) and Maryna Er Gorbach’s Klondike addressed specific events of the Russo-Ukrainian war, while Nariman Aliev’s 2019 drama Homeward was a meditation on what the loss of Crimea meant for its indigenous Tatar population. Other films, such as Volodymyr Tykhyi’s dramedy Our Kitties, tried to find humor amid the heartbreak and horrors faced by the Ukrainian soldiers stationed on the frontlines.
Everything changed in early 2022, when war—previously treated as a niche subject that was likely to scare off people looking for light entertainment—quickly became the only topic most Ukrainians were interested in. As missiles rained down, entertainers suddenly realized that they could not remain apolitical bystanders any longer.
Almost every popular musician spoke out against the invasion, with several (such as Dasha Astafieva and Vitaly Kozlovskiy) apologizing for performing in Russia and platforming their Russian colleagues in recent years. “I felt like a zombie while performing in Russia. I’d arrive, smile mechanically at everyone, do the set and return home. Russia has a lot of money but it’s a soulless place,” Astafieva wrote in a social media post shortly after the start of the full-scale invasion. Many artists—such as Antytila leader Taras Tolopya, singer Yarmak, and most of the lineup of cult Kharkiv-based hip-hop group TNMK—took up arms and joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine, while others took to volunteering by raising funds and sourcing equipment for Ukrainian soldiers, performing on the frontlines, or training as medics.
Some of their personal stories exemplified Ukraine’s modern civic identity, which has little to do with ethnicity or where you were born. Instead, for many, it’s a choice. Take Yulia Yurina: The Russian-born musician first came to Ukraine as a 18-year-old student in 2012 and soon joined forces with Ukrainian-born Stas Koroliov to form critically acclaimed pop-folk duo Yuko. Today, Yurina—still formally a Russian citizen despite publicly renouncing her citizenship and applying for a Ukrainian passport—is not only a beloved performer, whose recent album encapsulates much of the anger and grief felt by the average Ukrainian, but also a volunteer working tirelessly to provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with weapons and equipment. “I dance through the bullets as air raid sirens sing to me,” Yurina sings on one of the album’s tracks. “I am disgusted by what you’ve done here, you’re killing souls but you won’t be able to kill our dreams. We are not your friends, your family, or your lovers.”
During the first months of the war, a new subgenre of locally produced music arose. “Bayraktar-core” (the semi-ironic name came from how often these songs mentioned the Turkish drones used to great effect by Ukrainian forces in the early stages of the war) songs were simple, composed over a mere few weeks, catchy, and characterized by their aggressive optimism, constant references to recent events, local politicians, wartime memes, and foreign allies (Boris Johnson, then British prime minister, was mentioned often).
What these songs lacked in lyrical nuance and musical innovation they more than made up for by giving millions of Ukrainians a sense of unity and community amid the chaos and horror. “Occupiers came to Ukraine, wearing new uniforms and driving military vehicles,” go the lyrics of one of the most popular “Bayraktar-core” songs. “But their equipment was soon ruined by the Bayraktar!” Some, such as a viral mashup sampling a folk tune and a phrase spoken by Johnson, made the leap over to English-language social media.
While simple war-themed entertainment (or even anything vaguely patriotic and uplifting) might have been enough for listeners and viewers in the early months of the war, the artistic questions got sharper as the fight went on.
Did performers who left the country soon after the full-scale invasion have a right to make money off of songs mentioning the horrors others faced while staying in Ukraine? Could writers who hadn’t personally experienced life under Russian occupation use the devastation in say, Bucha or Mariupol, in their stories? And what if they conducted interviews with the people who had? Many of these questions lack definite answers, but the public response to various works inspired by the war have been noticeably different.
When writer Daria Gnatko announced in late 2022 that she would be publishing a novel set in Russian-occupied Bucha, many pointed out that not enough time had passed to properly process the events that had transpired in the town, and wondered whether writing a story like this without conducting in-depth interviews with the survivors of the occupation was a form of exploitation. The book, along with another upcoming work by Gnatko, a novel inspired by the destruction and occupation of Mariupol, was postponed indefinitely by the publisher after a wave of public criticism.
Likewise, popular writer Kateryna Babkina’s latest novel Mom, Do You Remember? was met with controversy after the author, who had spent much of the war abroad, announced that the plot would be inspired by the occupation of Bucha. Some reviewers were concerned that not enough time had passed since the liberation of Kyiv Oblast and that the subject was still too triggering for most readers, while others darkly suspected Babkina had only mentioned the tragically famous town when announcing the book to draw more attention to her work.
However, most of this criticism was limited to social media, while the reviews in local publications were much more enthusiastic about the novel—which is told from the perspective of a teenage girl narrowly escaping from Russian occupation with her infant half-sister and trying to build a life for them both abroad—and described it as a touching and delicate work full of compassion.
“If for some Ukrainians the book is therapeutic, for foreigners, in particular for Poles, who can already read Babkina’s story, it gives a more internal context about what war victims experience—who walk the same streets and visit the same shops as they do—actually go through. What challenges and problems they face, what they feel, why some do not learn the language and choose to return home despite the missile attacks, and what is happening in the hearts of millions of children who were forced to grow up one day when their world was destroyed by Russia,” wrote a reviewer for the Polish-Ukrainian outlet Sestry.
The truth is that when it comes to describing experiences as traumatic as an ongoing war, there isn’t going to be a one-size-fits-all perspective or approach. Some readers find works written about or vaguely inspired by something they or their loved ones went through therapeutic, while others find them triggering or even offensive.
When it comes to film, meanwhile, the pre-2022 offerings were earnest but often unwatched. Reviewers treated these movies as important pieces of cinema, but ones that described horrors most Ukrainians preferred not to dwell on for too long. After the full-scale invasion, however, a dark realization dawned: The wartime dramas were now reflections of our own collective experience, and no romantic comedy or workplace drama was going to stop you from thinking about shrapnel and blood.
That was supplemented by the belief that Ukrainians had to bear witness. At a time when many civilians felt abandoned by human rights organizations’ failure to document Russian war crimes (Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally called out the International Red Cross over its inaction after the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam, while Amnesty International found itself in hot water after publishing a much-criticized report accusing Ukraine of endangering its own civilians), filmmakers took this challenge upon themselves. Documentaries shot during the siege of Mariupol, after the liberation of Bucha, and during the near-constant shelling of Kharkiv became a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy, encouraging non-Ukrainians to support Ukraine, and an instrument to counter Russian propaganda and war fatigue in the West. Perhaps the best-known example is the Oscar-nominated documentary film 20 Days in Mariupol, which garnered universally positive reviews at home and abroad and offered viewers a unique glimpse into the horrors faced by the residents and defenders of the besieged city.
One unexpected wartime challenge is creating entertainment aimed at children. How do you keep kids of vastly different ages entertained while sitting in cold, poorly-lit bomb shelters for hours on end? How do you teach them the rules of wartime safety in an accessible and easy-to-remember format? How do you help them process the heartbreak of losing loved ones, having parents on the frontlines, or living in constant fear of missiles and drones? And perhaps most importantly, how do you begin to broach the topic that there are people who want these kids and their entire families dead? This is when Patron—a real-life sapper dog who became an unexpected celebrity among both kids and adults alike—came in handy.
The wildly popular Jack Russell Terrier, who works as a detection dog and mascot for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine first caught the public’s eye in early 2022, when the dog was awarded a medal for locating and helping defuse unexploded mines left behind by Russian forces after they were driven out of Chernihiv. A video of the bulletproof vest-wearing puppy went viral, and the newly famous dog was soon making charity appearances, visiting kids harmed by the war in hospitals across the country, and even got his own animated web show and book series. Content starring Patron is produced in partnership with UNICEF and aims to teach Ukrainian kids the importance of staying away from abandoned landmines, avoiding suspicious objects left behind by the invading army, and staying brave under difficult circumstances.
Undoubtedly, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine has led to a heightened interest toward local art both among Ukrainians and foreigners, as well as provided an entire generation of artists with stories of sacrifice, courage, and defiance—stories that, despite their complexity, simply must be told, and that may well become modern classics at an international scale. When Penguin Press bought the rights to Ukrainian writer and soldier Oleksandr Mykhed’s autobiographical novel The Language of War, publishing director Casiana Ionita described the book as “a war book that will be read 10, 20, 50 years from now.” But it’s unclear if enough foreign publishers are ready to break their long-standing tradition of viewing events in Ukraine solely through the eyes of their Moscow-educated authors and allow Ukrainians on the frontlines to speak for themselves, like Mykhed, before the war claims them too.

MDNI! pairing: Jisung x fem!reader warnings: cursing, penetration, unprotected sex, creampie, word count: 1.8k+
Check out my other stories here!
~
Jisung was the topic of the school. he had this interesting attitude. he was always so nice to everyone. everyone knew who he was, but at the same time no one really knew him. you had always found him interesting and you hated yourself for it. you, the regular y/n, has a crush on the Jisung? well who didn't?
you are both majoring in music, which makes it even harder to push away the feelings you have for him. every time he sees you struggle, he immediately comes your way to help you out. you know it's just an act of kindness, but it still makes your heart flutter.
today was no different from other days. you're sitting in class, listening to music for inspiration. your whole class has to produce and write a song as an exam and you've never been more stressed in your life. and being the perfectionist that you are, doesn't make things easier for you. the deadline is in a couple of days and you just can't seem to figure out what's missing in your song.
you just know Jisung isn't having a hard time, since he's been producing for a long time. you really admire him for doing so. writing music? that's fine. producing music? not so much. your daily mental breakdowns over a song just weren't worth it. but of course your school assigned you the project to create a whole song, including producing your own beat.
"are you okay?" you are startled by the sudden voice breaking through your thoughts. you look up and see Jisung at your desk. your heart immediately starts beating faster just by seeing him. damn he's attractive. "y-yeah..." you shake your head "why? do I look that terrible?" you joke. "no you look really pretty actually, but you look kinda.. mad?" he chuckles. did THE Jisung just call me pretty?? you shake your head and manage to put on a fake smile, trying to assure him you're doing good.
"you can tell me you know? it looks like you're stressed?" he says now kneeling beside you and leaning his arms on your desk. your eyes fall down to his muscular arms and you have to stop yourself from staring too much. "it's just.. the assignment.." you sigh "I can't figure out what's missing.. how do you do that every time?" you say while face palming yourself. he gently grabs your wrist and pulls your hands away from your face. "do you need help?" he smiles assuringly.
~
you meet up at his house. you're pretty nervous since this is the first time you actually see him after school, but you keep in mind that he just wants to help you. he suggested helping you at his house since he has his own little set up and he can help you better that way. you're amazed by all the equipment he has and you can't wait to work on your song.
"well show me what you got already" he says as he takes a seat. you unpack your stuff from your bag and look for the file. he connects your laptop to his speakers and presses play. you didn't think much of it before, but being besides him and letting him listen to your song suddenly makes you really shy.
the song ends and you anxiously wait for his reaction. you're too scared to look him in the eyes, too afraid for his opinion. after a while he finally speaks. "I love it, but you do need to add something yes.. I just can't put my finger on it"
after trying all kinds of different instruments and him helping you with sound effects you finally finish your product. you clap excitedly and without thinking twice you jump into his arms, thanking him over and over again. he laughs whole heartedly and holds you tight. "no problem, just tell me when you need help next time okay? I'm right here" he hums into your hair.
you realize you've been hugging him for a bit too long and quickly remove yourself from his body. "now... I only need to record the lyrics and I'm good to go" you say. he smiles and nods. "I'm glad I could help, thank you for trusting me. you return the smile and sigh "yes I don't know what I would have done without you really"
he gives you a confused look before saying "you're almost done, why do you still seem upset?". he's right, you're almost done with your assignment, but your head still feels full. "it's just that I have a lot of things to do right now, but I can't seem to relieve the stress you know what I mean?" you sigh. "I can help you with that, you know?" he winks at you. you look at him confused before registering a smirk on his face. you don't know if it's just your mind wanting you to believe he's actually smirking at you, or if he really has in mind what you think he does.
"what do you mean by that?" you say. "I think you already know what I'm talking about honey" he says, his tone suddenly a lot deeper than before. you straighten your back in the chair and clear your throat, trying to look clueless, but at the same time wanting to relieve the ache that has started to form in between your legs. your little ministration doesn't go unnoticed by Jisung and he decides to take the first step by prying open your legs and kneeling in between them.
the urge to kiss him suddenly hitting you so hard you can't think straight anymore. he smiles innocently at you making it harder for you to look him in the eyes. you suddenly feel like a pervert for thinking he actually wants to do anything with you, but before you can finish that thought he starts rubbing his hands on your thighs.
"what are you thinking about pretty girl?" he says as his hands travel higher up your thighs, getting dangerously close to your core. "you, I'm thinking about you" your eyes going wide. did I just say that out loud? you feel your cheeks heating up from embarrassment and you try to hide your face with your hands, but he grabs your wrists before you can do so. "good to know baby"
you tilt your head in confusion. "come with me, let me relieve your stress for you" he says as he leads you away from his studio and into his bedroom. he turns on the light and leads you to his bed, laying you down. he hovers over you, face inches away form yours. he stops just before reaching your lips. "can I kiss you?" he whispers. you wonder how you got in this position, but you decide not to overthink too much and just let it happen.
"yes.. please" you say as you grab his face. he grins and places his soft lips on yours. the kiss is soft and loving, but soon turns into a passionate kiss. he pulls away and looks at you, lust evident in his eyes. you squirm under him tryingto buck your hips into his to relieve the ache. "patience baby, we have all night" he says as he stills your hips.
he begins kissing your neck, nudging your jaw with his nose to give himself more access. the contrast of his soft lips on your neck and the harsh bites he gives you now and then makes you a whimpering mess. you tangle your fingers in his hair and tug at the roots earning a low growl from him.
he discards your shirt, your bra, then your pants, and your panties, leaving kisses at every newly exposed patch of skin. you grow wetter and more impatient with each kiss. you grab his face and pull him up to your face again. "please, stop teasing.. I need you" you beg.
he doesn't say a word but immediately plunges two fingers into your cunt. "damn you're so wet already baby girl" he groans. he keeps up a steady pace with his fingers as he circles your clit with his thumb. the pleasure is so overwhelming you grab onto the sheets beneath you messing them up completely. moans and curses slipping past your lips occasionally.
"fuck I can't take this anymore I need to feel you" he says as he starts to undo his pants. you stop him abruptly and you see the concern in his eyes. "I'm sorry, am I going to fast?" he says as he strokes your cheek softly. you lean your face into his hand more and smile. "no that's not it, I want to do it for you" you say as you grab his belt.
you push his pants down his legs as well as his underwear. you tug on his shirt telling him to take his shirt off and he does so. you can't help but run the tips of your fingers along his chest and over his arms. you see goosebumps forming on his skin from your touch. he pushes you gently to lay you down on your back again and hovers over you.
he kisses you passionately as he guides his tip to your entrance. he guides his hips into yours and bottoms out completely. your eyes roll to the back of your head as he hits the gummy spot inside you. he gives you a little time to adjust before starting to thrust into you. his grithy cock is sliding through your velvet walls. the feeling of his length thrusting in and out of you, combined with his low moans in your ear makes you see stars. you feel your high creeping up on you as he keeps hitting your sensitive spot.
"Jisung.. fuck.. I'm close" you moan. "I know baby, I know.. be a good girl for me and hold on a bit longer yeah?" he says. sweat trickling down his temples and his perfectly styled hair now damp and clamped to his forehead. the pleasure taking over him and his face contorts as he keeps feeling you clench around his cock.
he sneaks a hand between your bodies and plays with you clit. "come on baby, cum for me, milk my cock" you're clenching uncontrollably around him by now and his words send you over the edge immediately. your eyes roll to the back of your head and your legs shake because of the intensity of your orgasm. hearing you moan and scream his name tips him over the edge as well. he comes with a string of curses leaving his mouth and shooting his warm load deep inside of you.
with a few more thrusts he pulls out and looks at your abused hole. you feel his cum dripping out of your cunt and he quickly collects it with his fingers, shoving it deep inside you again. you whince because of the overstimulation, but you're too tired to even care right now. he rubs your thighs, helping you calm down from the orgasm.
"well.. I think I should help you out more often"

CLUB OWNER
Falco ‘Garnet’ Ritter is the owner of the place he named ‘HELL BUNKER’, a location that hosts diverse technoise parties and concerts (but also some other music genres). He’s also the inventor of Chrome Chamber Rave as well as the radio station ‘109.6 HELL BUNKER.FM’.
He has earned himself quite a high cred and respect in the Night City party business as his location and main event is unique compared to other technoise events in the city. His vision simply was to bring European technoise (back) to the NUSA, especially hard tech from his home country Germany. He wants people of Night City to experience that technoise from Europe hits differently than other technoise does, especially the one from Germany (as technoise roots lie there)¹. He’s well known in the underground scene and also appreciated by Maelstroms. He used to be deejay-ing at Totentanz years ago and the location gave him a lot of inspiration for creating HELL BUNKER afterwards. He’s mostly known under the artist name ‘Garnet’² rather than under his real name. So in the first place Garnet is a musician and a business owner. But since he’s got ears and eyes everywhere to keep his club clean he may also have important info for mercs and he’s not easy to fight because of his installed Gorilla arms cyberware. He often acts as a bouncer for his own club. It’s likely to happen that you might get thrown out by him personally if you behave inappropriately. He doesn’t make any excuses. Chrome Chamber Rave especially has strict rules such as a certain dress code you gotta have to wear, otherwise you may not be able to enter.

SET LIST
Garnet still deejays at CCR. His setlist is of course all hard technoise yet he concentrates to mix it with more emotions and a touch of industrial, even some lyrics and tends to venture further than that. Each song is unique to itself and can be a true experience if you are willing to let yourself soaked in and let it touch your soul.
“Technoise may not be able to save the world, but it will save your soul.”
— Falco ‘Garnet’ Ritter
Cover artwork by me. Steal and you will be doomed. I‘ve chosen tracks only by one artist named ‘Roman Gehrecke’. This artist is the closest to what I imagine Garnet would produce as well. So I decided to borrow the music for Falco. Of course all the music belongs to Roman Gehrecke! There's one song at the end of it I see as the one that is always played at last so the audience knows ok after that it's done. This song is also not by the artist mentioned above but has a well known melody majority knows.
Recommendation: ‚Gefallene Engel‘, ‚Anderswelt‘, ‚Stimmen der Tiefe‘ and ‚Schutt und Asche‘ – best listened to via headphones and making time for it should you want to try to get soaked into.
———
¹ "Technoise and its various derivations dominate much of the German scene. If you're hip, you already know about Technoise. If not, listen up. Technoise is quite popular with the discerning young punk; it was popularized by Germany's own NetWerk actually, you've got your Overlay style from London, Jazznetic from Rotterdam and Echo from Frankfurt. In addition, there are people producing Frock (Fractal Rock) all over the place. The good thing is, Technoise is quite easy to produce. You only need a small computer, some software and you're ready to buzz. Those of you with a message might miss the political attitude, but you're missing the point. Technoise is strictly for partying, tripping and dancing. People meet and dance up to the runner's point. Maybe that's a political statement in itself, oder?" — Eurosource Plus – The New Eurotheater Sourcebook for Cyberpunk
² Garnet first is a song by my favorite band D'espairsRay I still love to this day (they ain't anything to do with techno). And second a gemstone that has the color of a darkened red, which I also try to give him as a main color theme of his wardrobe (together with black ofc).

So I came to you earlier in the week because I felt like I can share with you how much I was not looking forward to this release.
I was actually very much not interested in listening to the album until after a week when this madness died down a little bit.
Unfortunately I caved because I am weak and I am glad I did because this album is actually good.
I have only listen to the first part (until Clara Bow) and I liked most of the songs. Like these are actually good.
I was afraid of what the lyrics are going to be like from the little snippets we were getting but they worked really in the songs.
I actually see a lot of maturity in her song writing which I was not expecting (this is my opinion, you can of course disagree)
I personally detached her lyrics away from her personal life and just created new scenarios in my head for them. And tbh I think they worked better than love songs or break up songs.
I think the aesthetics match the vibe really well but I think she could have chosen a different title because it doesn’t not match the vibe of the album.
I am still disappointed with everything she did to “promote” the album and I think she should be called out for it.
I wanted to say this before the album came out so I’ll just say it now so I don’t send more than one anon, I have always assumed she cheated on Joe, and not from the break up but before. Just listen to exile., I don’t what the song is actually about or what was the inspiration behind it but to me it always seemed like she cheated because she like the attention she got from whoever it was and he took her back because he loved her too much.
I’ll come back and let you know when I listen to the other half of the album, probably will be tomorrow because it’s a bit too much 😂
You can come to me whenever you’d like dearest anon. I’m always here for you.
I felt the same about her promo and lyrics (e.g. I love you it’s ruining my life) but I’m glad they fit well within the context of the songs she wrote.
When I listen to her music, I also detach the meaning of the songs away from her personal life. A lot of her lyrics are relatable to the every day person’s experience with love and loss so it’s easy to apply the meanings to our own lives and not focus on Matty Healy or whoever the song is about.
She definitely should be called out about the promo and feeding into the “Joe cheated” narrative that her fan base created and circulated heavily.
There have been multiple times where she has written about cheating or wanting to cheat. She loves the attention of men who worship her. She has been honest about that. So I wouldn’t be surprised if she did actually cheat on Joe.
Cheating seems to be a theme in her life.
Come back whenever you’d like to have a chat <3 goodluck with the rest of the album

MARCH 2024 DIARY POST
I'm keeping up the habit of writing a monthly post to catalogue all the things I've been obsessed with in 2024. At the end of the year, I want to be able to look back and remember what was making me happy all year long! If you are reading this, I hope you will enjoy hearing about these things or checking them out too! First, a chaotic collage of those things!
Tumblr media
VIDEO GAME: As you may already know, Splatoon is probably my favorite video game franchise of all time. I really cannot overstate how important it is to me. Naturally, I was highly anticipating its new singleplayer DLC, titled Side Order, but when it finally came out at the end of February, my elbow was fractured in a way that made it painful for me to play. So, I had to wait until about a week into March for my elbow to heal a little. Then, I spent about 10 hours obsessively playing it, and I loved pretty much every second of it. It featured by far the most difficult levels ever seen in a Splatoon game, which was a treat to me as a player who was disappointed by the rather simplistic story mode of the base game. Splatoon 3: Side Order took the form of a roguelite battle tower, similar to Salmon Run but with new enemies, unique (and sometimes puzzling) stages, and customizable weapon builds. Even players who find it a bit too challenging at first can eventually mod the difficulty to an extent that (hopefully) makes it doable. The story was nothing crazy, but the gameplay and visuals were so unbelievably good that I honestly wished I could erase it all from my mind and play it again from the start. Just yay 💕, I love Splatoon so much.
TWITCH STREAM FAN EDIT: If you don't already know who Jerma is, he is a prolific video game streamer that I became a big fan of a few years ago. His unique humor has consistently impressed and appealed to me, and his fan community has proven itself to be both creative enough and motivated enough to persistently churn out edited “best of” versions of his streams. For better or for worse, Jerma announced his retirement from streaming last year, leaving his eager fans with nothing but his earlier content to dredge for, well… content. One such fan edit that was released this year, post-retirement, was a massive compilation of all his Nancy Drew playthroughs (save for one). This edit in particular was one that I found overwhelmingly funny and good, and it inspired an ongoing fanfic that I’m still currently working on writing. Oddly enough, watching this caused a domino effect that got me back into writing in general and has given me the surge of confidence and inspiration that I needed to keep working on creating the fiction that has lived inside in my head for years. I really hope this feeling never dies. You can watch the stream that inspired me, linked here!
MUSICAL ARTIST: Peach Kelli Pop is probably tied (with a few other artists) for the title of my favorite band of all time. Their entire discography is only about 2 hours long, but they were still my most listened to artist for several years in a row. It’s due to the consistency of the vibe across all of her work: upbeat and positive while still delivering a profound emotional impact. I've been able to just listen her entire catalog of music over and over and over again on shuffle. I might describe it as DIY rock, or feminist punk, and if you haven't heard it before, Gentle Leader is probably the best album to start with. Listen here!
MUSICAL ARTIST: After listening to nothing except Peach Kelli Pop for about a week straight, I started to look into similar bands that I hadn't already checked out and found one that really caught my interest. That's how I was introduced to Tacocat! Their band name is both a palindrome and euphemism, and their album Lost Time was love at first listen. They have cozy lyrics about aliens, birth control, and creating your own values, and their music has left me in a good mood every time I've thrown it on. You can listen to the first song that I heard, linked here!
SONG: It's Don’t Rain On My Parade, by Barbra Streisand!! I still haven't watched the musical that this song is from, but the drag queen Plasma mentioned it on RuPaul Season 16, which is how I ended up hearing it. This song gets an individual mention because I was absolutely blown away by this one individual track! It's brilliant and catchy right out of the gate, "Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter! Don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade!" It's from 1964, but its recording sounds crystal clear and it channels its intended emotions perfectly. I felt compelled to listen to it over and over again, because it really is just so cheerful and artistically inspiring. I feel like it's a perfect piece of music. Listen here!
SONG: I have to give another song an individual mention! It's Mood Indigo, by Nina Simone!! I’ve been a big fan of Nina Simone for years now, but more often than not, I've stuck to my favorite album, Pastel Blues. I did branch out and listen to this song a few times in the past, but it only recently dawned on me just how perfect it is. Wikipedia says that it was recorded in 1964, about the same time as Don’t Rain On My Parade, and while it's technically a cover of an old Duke Ellington song, Nina Simone’s version has a totally unique vibe, evident from the first few bars. Its lyrics are meant to be cathartic, as they discuss suicidal ideation, while the drums, bass, and piano create a beautiful and upbeat swing melody that perfectly juxtaposes and rebuts the content of Nina’s vocals. It's menacing, catchy, uplifting, and truly perfect! I now believe it to be a landmark in Nina Simone’s career, and the whole of music history in general. Listen here!
MUSICAL ARTIST: Okay, one last music rec, I swear!! I was really feeling the vibes this month (but mostly just listening to bands that I already know and love). Along with Peach Kelli Pop, another one of my favorite bands is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Ever since 2017 (aka, the year of the gizz) they have probably reigned supreme as my #1 most listened to band. They just have so much music, with so much variation, that I can usually find at least one of their songs that appeals to me. Since the start of this year, I've been collecting and organizing a playlist of my favorite songs by them, titled 31 Days Of Gizz. Not for any particular reason, but just because I find it fun to make lists! At the last minute, I decided that I would organize the songs, specifically in the way that I would play them if I were introducing someone new to the band. So, if you haven’t heard their music before, maybe it’s time I introduced you? But no pressure, I just like their songs and I made my playlist just for me! I'm linking to it on spotify, HERE, if you’re interested! (forgot to put this one on the collage, lol)
VIDEO GAME: Right before the month ended, I bought the new fantasy tactics game, Unicorn Overlord, and I am fucking in love. I’ve been a longtime fan of the fantasy tactics genre, so as soon as this game started making waves, I begrudgingly accepted that I HAD to play it. I really don’t have a lot of time in between trying to take care of things at home and working on my writing, as I mentioned before, but I briefly dropped all my other hobbies and managed to fit about 10 hours of gameplay in before the month ended. I really wish I had time to obsess over it, because I feel like it is a masterpiece, even if the rumors about there being gay content ended up being a disappointing exaggeration (the game was developed by Vanillaware, but was published by homophobic giants ATLUS and SEGA, so I’m not surprised). Despite the story being pretty much dog shit though, I believe the gameplay is damn near perfect, and even revolutionary within its genre. I’ll probably be sinking all my game time into it until the new Elden Ring DLC drops. If you’re a person who also likes fantasy tactics, then I highly recommend playing it (I got it for the Nintendo Switch, where it seems to run perfectly).
(that’s it. It is now APRIL!! There might be some repeats this next month, or I'll leave them out... we'll see. Hope you have a good day! ♡)

"Lady's Baby" (Tork) alternate vocal [More on YouTube.] Photo 1 in this video by Nurit Wilde, photo 2 by Bridgeman Images.
"[At the Troubadour, Peter] sang one of his new songs, ‘Lady’s Baby,’ and was called back for an encore." - Disc and Music Echo, May 18, 1968 (x)
“Peter isn’t sure what he’s going to do now [that he has left The Monkees], but he’s feeling free for the first time in months. Toward the end of the Monkees’ run at Screen Gems, Peter said they’d go into recording sessions and not even speak to each other much less play together.” - Circus, June 1969
“[Davy] got sick of banging the tambourine all day long. And [Micky] lost faith in himself. He never did believe he was a decent drummer, so he didn't want to do it anymore. Mike wanted to produce his own records. He wanted to have total control. I was the only one who believed in the group per se, and so there I was all by myself, wanting a group, with nobody to be a group with.” - Peter Tork, When The Music Mattered (1984)
“Taking the expression of following one’s muse quite literally, [Peter] sought to re-create in the studio the very environment that inspired him to compose the song. This endeavor included having a recording engineer crawl on the ground after young Justin to capture real-life ‘smiles and coos’ (as in the song’s lyrics). Both lady and baby giggled and squeaked through hours of expensive recording time, which seemed to infuriate some members of the band and their musical coordinator, the late Lester Sill. ‘“Lady’s Baby” was a very weird and ridiculous situation,’ recalls engineer Hank Cicalo. ‘To accommodate Peter at the time, he wanted to do this thing and he wanted it to be real spacey. So what we did was we set up the studio and brought rugs in and made a little room with pillows. He would bring his friends in and they’d sit around and he’d play a little bit. It was pretty outrageous: days and days of doing the same piece of material. ‘They would just sit around for hours and drink wine and carry on, and try to get takes of this tune. Maybe we would make one or two takes. It was OK for me as an engineer because it was like taxi time. But he wouldn’t take any help from anybody. At this point in time I thought my communication with the guys was pretty good, and I could talk to them and whatever else. There were a couple of times he got a little hot about doing this. I’d say, ‘Hey, you’re wasting a lot of time. Either we do this track, or we get on with it.’ We must have done a hundred takes on that thing. He sort of went off on his own in a lot of ways. And there was a little resentment between the guys in not working together.’” - The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees box set liner notes
“Hey listen, fair is fair. They laugh and joke about that [‘Lady’s Baby’]. OK, it cost as much to do I think as ‘Good Vibrations.’ They were laughing about Peter Tork, but that [song] is a true-to-life thing. He was living with a woman [Karen Harvey] at the time and she had a little baby [Justin Hammer] and that changed his life, you know? That gave him something to think about. He was being downtrodden by the studio in regard to his recording and his playing and his songs and everything else, but the guy was the salt of the earth. It wasn’t just Hare Krishna, waterbeds and brown rice. That guy was a very, very accomplished musician. He needed magic to be able to get in and do ‘Lady’s Baby.’ It’s a nice song. It’s true. It’s got the warmth and everything of what he was living. ‘Lady’s Baby’ touches me, lets me know that I am free, whatever it is. I remember it so well. It’s a real tune, you know? I love it.” - Davy Jones, The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story of the '60s TV Pop Sensation (2005) (x)
"[M]y darling Karen, with whom I am still very good friends all these years later.” - Peter Tork during his My Life In The Monkees & So Much More tour, 2013 (x)
"We’re still very, very good friends." - Karen Harvey, The News Journal, July 16, 1989 (x)
Q: “The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees sessions was a productive time in the studio for The Monkees. However, none of your stuff like ‘Lady’s Baby’ and ‘Tear The Top Right Off My Head’ made it to the album. How come?” Peter Tork: “To tell you truth… I… I never was able in those days particularly — I’m getting better at it these days — but in those days I was almost entirely unable to fight for what I saw as quality. If I didn’t get somebody fighting on my behalf then it didn’t, just didn’t come to pass. And none of the other guys was much interested in supporting my sense of quality, they had their own agendas and each one of them… I mean, not that I was left out in this regard, no one of us really supported any of the others except that, that I like to think that I tried to support Micky in a way which, for some reason, he never did pick up on. I mean, I think that Micky has a certain kind of genius that he was never able to acknowledge in himself. But be any of that as it may, I just basically think that I wasn’t feeling a part of it anymore already by that point, I’d already felt like I was odd man out, and of course I quit almost immediately thereafter. In fact, I think it’s The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees that has some tunes that were recorded after I quit.” - Headquarters radio, September 1989 (x)

DOG BOY Album
Evolved from the high energy and mosh-inducing rap/rock duo, City Morgue, ZillaKami’s persona is one that makes you need to take a double take. His appearance alone is one that produces a message, that being “don’t test me”. From the face tattoos to the vibrant yet rigid way of presenting himself, his looks alone are something that can serve as inspiration to the heavy metal fans in the underground scene. The same message is correspondingly reflected in his music, most prevalently seen with rapper SosMula.
ZillaKami launched his career as a song-writer, ghost-writing for internet star Tekashi 6ix9ine, but then quickly met and banded together with SosMula to create City Morgue. To defy all mainstream attitudes and trends, City Morgue established their own style that spoke to their fans, pioneering the scene of the combination of trap and heavy metal. They accomplish this style with bold and intense rap over heavy rock riffs and fast paced brute bass, giving anyone listening an adrenaline rush. Dropping their first three volumes between the years 2018 and 2020, the duo saw no end to their collaborative efforts of keeping their spirit alive and well. Both coming from a dark past of drugs, guns, and poverty, the two rockstars banded together to create the rage-inducing music that caters to the mosh culture, creating their own sense of community.
Focusing in on ZillaKami, he creates the perfect harmony of high intensity trap and angsty heavy metal. This is clearly represented in his solo project, DOG BOY, opened up by Corey Taylor in the first song, “Chewing Gum!”. Corey Taylor, lead singer of the critically acclaimed heavy metal band SlipKnot, leaves a big influence on Zilla’s persona and music, as he even has a tattoo of him! The inspiration for the sound of this album can be identified from several different popular heavy metal and rock bands, but are blended together in a unique style that pairs with his tone of voice; ZillaKami’s voice alone has become a recognizable staple that you can distinguish in any feature.
DOG BOY incorporates many high intensity and fast paced elements that define his style seen from City Morgue, seen such in “CHAINS”, “631 MAKES ME”, and “BADASS Feat. Lil Uzi Vert”. The crisp and loud sounds of electric and distorted guitars makes anyone listening feel like they are in front of the real set, as the bass is produced loud enough to bust speakers and eardrums. While a lot of these songs tend to mesh together and sound similar, the demographic of these songs are hype enough to put in any workout playlist. Zilla’s placement of these tracks between his moody and depressive lyricism tracks proves to be a representation of his nonstop chaos-inducing character that made him popular in the first place.
Found between the staple tracks that define this album are tracks representing his personal identity that differ from his usual persona. In tracks such as “Not Worth It”, Zilla opens up about his deteriorating mental health that is masked by his screamo persona. He questions if his lifestyle is an appropriate measure to try and escape the turmoil he faces, as he states in “Bleach (feat. Denzel Curry)”, “I speed away, hopin’ that I lost whoever’s chasin’ / Chaser, he is always gainin’ / Ready to use my NOS if he gets closer, I’m just waiting / I cannot stay neutral, I fucked up my clutch / Do I go forward or do I back up? / Do I lay down or do I just stand up? / The only thing I know is that I don’t know”. Zilla uses this line to express that he doesn’t know the appropriate way to handle his depression, so he metaphorically “speeds away”. He characterizes his depressive states as “bad luck”, as seen in “Black Cats”. The connection to his audience showed us a new side of ZillaKami, one that only scratched the surface in City Morgue. The album allows the listener to humanize him and allow a relationship to become deeper, serving as a connection to anyone who feels the same way.
As the album comes to an end we are introduced to the songs held closest to Zilla as stated in an interview with Brandon Buckinham (on YouTube). “dedgrl” refers to a past girlfriend whose promising future was “indebted” by a life of drugs, ultimately leading to her death. Additionally, in “Space Cowboy”, the popular song on the track, Zilla reflects the suicide of a member in his “dog gang”  with the repeating melody “all dogs go to heaven”. These songs are something that have only been found on DOG BOY thus far, as these significant life connections serve as indications of factors contributing to his depression. Strategically they are placed at the end of the album, serving the purpose of representing how his days feel. Consistently contrasting violent music and deep personal experiences shows that he is constantly at a crossroads with his persona and his thoughts.
While this entire album maintains his rare style, the ultimate meaning of this album is to represent who Zilla really is. The relations of rage and depression is nothing new in western culture, and this album serves as a perfect depiction through the intriguing lens of ZillaKami. For this reason, I feel DOG BOY is an incredible and much needed illustration that makes City Morgue who they are. I recommend this album to anyone who has an itch for screamo type music that can uplift them while therapizing those hard-to-describe emotions.

Unit 07: Nature and Music
Music is deeply intertwined with nature, and my time spent in Mexico during reading week reminded me of that. From pelicans squawking to waves crashing loudly on the shore or rain hitting the pavement, nature's sounds are diverse. In my opinion, that "atmosphere" created by nature is attributed to its "music." Each environment creates its own unique music, evoking emotions and memories in those who experience it. No one environment produces the exact same music, and one environment's music is never the same each time. Gray et al. (2001) note how nature's unique sounds have sparked curiosity throughout history. For instance, the study of communication among aquatic mammals like dolphins and whales has long been a focus. From the majestic mating songs of blue whales to the distinctive clicks of dolphins, these sounds compose the underwater world's music. Recently, I had the privilege of listening to humpback whale mating songs in Puerto Vallarta. Accompanied by a marine biologist or a nature interpreter, the experience was enlightening. Through his expertise, he skillfully guided the group through the whale-watching tour, engaging people of all backgrounds and instilling a sense of curiosity and respect for nature. By sharing his passion through personal anecdotes, he illustrated the real-world significance of our course content in connecting humans with the natural world.
Like nature interpretation, music affects our minds through emotion (Gray et al., 2001). While initially challenging to pinpoint where nature is in music, the reading by Gray et al. (2001) highlighted its presence. Musicians and composers often draw inspiration from nature's sounds, incorporating them into their compositions to evoke specific moods or atmospheres. In that regard, it's similar to poetry, incorporating certain words like "dark clouds" or "rain" to evoke a feeling of sadness and despair.
Another factor I had yet to consider, explained by Gray et al. (2001), was that nature's unique sounds mimic those in an orchestra, with each creature and element contributing its own distinctive voice. Just as musicians use different instruments to create harmonious melodies, nature orchestrates its own music.
Reflecting on personal experiences, certain songs transport us back to nature. As someone who grew up playing different instruments, the melody of music sticks out to be more than lyricism does. Through playing guitar, I have come to appreciate songs that involve plucking each string, each evoking a sense of connection to the natural world. One such song that immediately conjures images of rolling mountains and lush green grass is “Edelweiss” from The Sound of Music. The melody resonates with feelings of peace and tranquillity, reminiscent of the landscapes portrayed in the film.

Lewis Collage
Tumblr media
Meet the Robinsons turned 17, so I did a collage of all my AU Lewis/Neils for the anniversary.
We have: Lewis (middle), Cornelius (top middle), Lazy Neil (top left), Discovery-Recovery Neil (top right), Little Neil (bottom left), Lamb Lewis (bottom middle), and Agoraphobic Lewis (bottom right). Explanations for all of them will be under a cut! Might as well share some stuff for the special occasion, right?
Inspos (a.k.a. my own little anniversary playlist) VIP Only by Flightrush Pon3ville Rave by Flightrush ft. FritzyBeat Let Me Feel This by MC-Arch and bank pain (PegasYs remix) Dirty Car by Studio Killers Great! Big! Party! by EYEAMKI Sexy Villain by Remi Wolf MAGICIAN by Lexie Liu
Ask box is always open. (I keep forgetting to say this...)
Inspos for each of the AUs Lazy Days Neil - Hollywood Yeen by Spott ft. ida deerz, and She Bad by DJ Bob and Fabobeatz ft. Jermanee - Basically, like the rest of his family, he's chill and laid back, but also has the party side. Also, we needed a Neil to openly own his body and sexuality.
Discovery - Recovery Neil - Breaking the Habit and Given Up by Linkin Park, and You're An Awful Person by R.I.P. ft. vflower - Currently - as of writing this - I am working on his story. It's full of personal experiences and angst. He's inspired by the songs I would listen to as an edgy teen. The lyrics of these songs give you hints into his story, just an FYI.
Little Space Neil - Otter Pop by Shawn Wasabi ft. Hollis, and Saria's Song (Lost Woods) Music Box by R3 Music Box on YouTube - He was created as a way to vent my Little Space. There's not much else to this one, really.
Agoraphobic Lewis - Anxiety Angel and Agoraphobia by Elita - His story is up on AO3 right now, but I'm planning on rewriting it because I hate how it is at the moment. But essentially, he's inspired by the two songs linked above. His story is a "what if" scenario.
Little Lamb Lewis - Cruel by Mercy Necromancy, Dog Teeth by Nicole Dollanganger, and Love Taste by Moe Shop, Jamie Paige, and Shiki - Created after being influenced by the internet aesthetic known as "Traumacore." He also has a story I'm working on, but that'll be later. He's my favorite little unhinged psychopath who loves Franny to Hell and back.

'Legendary pop star David Bowie was a man of eclectic pop culture tastes. The artist formerly known as Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke was famous for his mysterious, otherworldly personas, but he wasn't actually all mystery all the time. Bowie passed away in 2016, but fans can still excavate lists of his personal favorites and influences online, like this one from Far Out Magazine that notes that he counted "Trainspotting," "Un Chien Andalou," and "Moon" (directed by his son, Duncan Jones) among his favorite movies.
Bowie may not have always been very public about his pop cultural interests, but we know about at least one television show that he loved prior to his passing: "Peaky Blinders." The BBC series turned Netflix original ended its TV run in 2022 (a film is still to come), but series creator Steven Knight revealed back in 2016 that Bowie was apparently a massive fan of the show. "We've had an amazing response from famous people for some reason," Knight told Radio Times (via The Independent), mentioning Bowie alongside other major celebrities like Steven Spielberg, Snoop Dogg, and Tom Cruise.
Bowie wanted a song from Blackstar to appear in the show
Bowie's love for "Peaky Blinders" isn't just an apocryphal story from after his death. According to Knight, he actually sent a sign of his adoration for the show directly to star Cillian Murphy. "He sent a photo of himself with razor blades in his cap to Cillian about a year ago," Knight shared in 2016, ahead of the show's third season. "I got in touch with his people who came back straight away and said he was a big, big fan." Knight even says a Sony representative visited him a week ahead of the release of Bowie's album "Blackstar," which was released just two days before the musician's death. As he put it, "It seems that his people were keen to establish that we could use it before he died."
The show ultimately incorporated Bowie's song "Lazarus" into its third season, underscoring a sequence in which Tommy Shelby (Murphy) slowly and painfully recovers from a skull fracture, numbing his pain with drugs in the process. The scene fits the lyrics and title of "Lazarus" perfectly, as Tommy is resurrected from a trip to death's door, sipping from a prescription bottle while Bowie sings "I'm so high, it makes my brain whirl." Murphy has also spoken about Bowie's wish to see one of his songs featured in the show, telling Spin 1038 in 2017:
"He was into the show and he wanted his music to be used in the show and it was very humbling, you know? For someone who grew up listening to David Bowie, that was a massive honor and privilege that he was interested in the show and keen to be involved. So we were all very humbled that he was."
Bowie's influence continues in Murphy's career
It's heartbreaking to think that Bowie didn't get to see his music featured on the show he clearly loved, or get to see how "Peaky Blinders" wrapped up in its final season. Still, crossovers between the actor and the show's cast continue today. A cover of his song "Lady Grinning Soul" by musician Anna Calvi appeared in the show's fifth season, playing during a scene in which Arthur (Paul Anderson) severely beats a man ahead of a Quaker meeting.
Murphy, meanwhile, has gained his own unexpected inspiration from Bowie as his career has continued. The actor revealed that Christopher Nolan actually used Thin White Duke era Bowie as a costume reference point for "Oppenheimer" protagonist J. Robert Oppenheimer. "In our story, he puts on the hat and picks up the pipe and it's him kind of creating this persona, kind of self-mythologizing," Murphy noted. The actor noted that it was important to him to get Oppenheimer's silhouette right, complete with a "very fragile" look to him. "Weirdly, Chris sent me a couple of shots of David Bowie" Murphy shared. According to the actor, the reference points were of the musician "around the 'Young Americans' time, with these massive trousers, and he was so emaciated but so f***ing cool."
"Peaky Blinders" is set for a film continuation sometime in the future; let's hope there's room for another Bowie tune on the soundtrack.'

Music and Nature
Everywhere. Music is in nature everywhere. Just a few days ago Guelph had a thunderstorm and I couldn’t help but relish in the sound of raindrops against glass windows and the thunder rolling. It got me thinking back to the many times we’ve heard nature speak and sing. It reminded me of early summer mornings when I’d wake up to the sound of birds chirping, only to then close my window so I could sleep. Or the time I heard colonies of sea lions in California. One of nature’s melodies that I enjoy the most is the crashing sound of waves reaching shore and the crackling of  a fire. That is to say, whether it's the sounds mother nature makes through the elements or through animals, music is everywhere in nature. This can also be proven to be true vis versa.
As Micheal Spitzer once wrote, music is our umbilical cord to mother nature (Bastian, 2021). What he means by that is, the music we listen to today is an evolution of the sounds we have put together from animals and other aspects of nature. Essentially, when you are listening to music, you are taking a journey through time. In a podcast linked below, he discusses the beginning of time when animals were the only creatures on the Earth that sang like whales and birds, whether it was to communicate with others or to attract mates (Bastian, 2021). Somewhere down the line our ancestors assimilated those vocalizations (Bastian, 2021). He discusses different theories on why homosapiens are captivated by the sounds of nature and how it has provided evolutionary advantages (Bastian, 2021). Eventually, they used nature’s sounds and created tools like bone flutes to mimic and create melodies based on the rhythms created by insects like crickets (Bastian, 2021). Thus, if we were to think back to the original point of this discussion, where is nature in music, Spitzer would argue nature is the backbone of music.
https://www.kcrw.com/culture/shows/life-examined/evolution-music/michael-spitzer-musical-human
(In the spirit of listening and creating podcasts, I’ve linked the podcast above where the author & professor Micheal Spitzer discusses how nature has impacted the music we listen to today. I would highly recommend that you check it out, it's very fascinating!)
On that note, much of the music I listen to is instrumental, especially violin music. Having played two instruments growing up, I enjoy listening to different melodies. Even when I listen to lyrical music, I often find myself humming the tune while struggling to recall the lyrics. One of my favorite songs is called Raindrops and it is composed by a violinist named Raaginder. If you check out his discography, most of his songs are inspired by nature hence the name of the song. This is one of his earliest works from 9 years ago and it has the magical ability to transport me to the memory of my grandmother and I sitting on the terrace of her home back in India, watching as the soft winds blow across the fields during monsoon. Listening to this piece reminds of the soothing rustle of the leaves and the smell of the wet soil. This personal connection with the song is a beautiful testament to the power of music, to be able to forge deep emotional connections with nature and our own personal histories.

got tagged by @kimium in a music tag game here (thank you, kim!) and i figured i may as well get this post written before the next twst update drops tomorrow and permanently alters my brain chemistry q-q
rules: post 5 songs you actually listen to, and tag 10 of your followers/mutuals (except i def don’t have that many people to tag TT)
i freaking love music with all my heart and soul so uhh— time to tangent! under the cut. this got long. just scroll past if you didn’t follow me for this shit ahfndhgdgf
1. bathroom community by glass beach (pinkshift cover)
i stumbled upon this song earlier this year thanks to spotify (yes, i actually look at what they recommend! i need more songs!) and god. GOD. this song has held me in a choke hold since i first listened to it. i desperately want to create an oc from this song, or a story of some sort; the story it paints with its lyrics just has so much goddamn potential for a character.
i love singing this song, even if i can’t sing very well. it’s just a lot of fun, with how intense it is! plus the lyrics... god, the lyrics. i usually like to gravitate to songs with more vague lyrics, but something about this song really soothes that teenage version of me tucked away somewhere in my soul, still angsting about the world.
i think my favourite line is this one, in the second verse — “he said you’ll never be okay if you don’t come to your senses / with you, everything’s the end of the world.” though “flipping through a spiral notebook for some / sad, hopeless words to turn into a liturgy” slaps hard too.
2. everybody’s falling in love by *repeat repeat
oh, i have a fic idea i long to write with this one. actually, i have an oc story (which is its own thing i won’t talk about) based on this song, but i have a fic idea i want to write too. this song just evokes so much whimsy of people falling in love, a constant spiral of romance! and it brings to mind a soulmate au — except instead of soulmate marks already existing and being common knowledge, they just... suddenly appear. which leads to a spiral of people figuring it out, relationship drama — what if two people who were dating aren’t soulmates? people who were platonic who suddenly get marks for each other? who gets together? who doesn’t? i’unno, i’m like... relationship introspection extraordinaire. might be a silly idea now that i’ve typed it out, but it’d be fun.
ah— for the song itself... yeah, it’s light on the lyrics, but like i said, it’s whimsical! it’s fun! i love the announcement at the start to really set the scene — this is a stage, and people falling in love is the show for everyone’s entertainment. yeah, it’s just— it’s a fun song. i don’t have much else to say.
3. sex sells by lovejoy
oh... (longing sigh) this song.
i listen to it a lot whenever i’m in a depressed funk. it just resonates with me a lot; the lyrics remind me of being second place to someone else, of a relationship slipping, that kind of thing. actually, the fact that i haven’t listened to it as much lately is probably a sign of my improving mental health (HA!)
i conceived a fic au before based off this song before — for a different fandom, not twst. it’s kind of shelved, i might turn it into an oc story instead because i still like the concept. but the inspiration i drew from this song turned into a very complex introspection of a close relationship (think childhood friends to lovers) crumbling and shattering under jealousy, envy, et cetera, et cetera. wrote like, one short ficlet off that? never posted it, but i’m still happy with it.
ah... lyrics. yeah, this one’s obvious; my favourite line is “how’s it feel to be so loved yet so alone?”
4. poplar st. by glass animals
was struggling between a lot of songs (how do you expect me to pick just FIVE?!) but considering how a line from poplar st. is literally my blog title on my main... figured it was a no brainer to include it. i wish i could convey my thoughts and feelings on this song, but this is one of the very rare few songs where, if you asked me to tell you what i like about it, i’d be stumped.
i’m not good with identifying instruments or explaining any of that, but the almost dreamy atmosphere of poplar st. hooks me splendidly. the vocals fit beautifully, to the point where they blend with the music and almost seem hard to pick out. i like how the song seems to tinge with darkness and fragment as it goes on — both lyrically and musically. it just scratches a lot of itches for me. would love to try writing something based off it someday? might just be oc stuff though, given the lyrics.
lyrics... the whole chorus slaps. it’s so lovely. all the lines about flowers, and then “i am a true romantic / free falling love addict” just tops it off beautifully <3
5. schoolin’ by everything everything
ah... hahaha.
not to sound cringe on main but if i had to ascribe a song to myself, it would be this one. my friends know — oh, they know — just how much schoolin’ resonates with me. if i divulged all my thoughts here, this post would turn into a criminally long essay, so i’ll exercise restraint for now.
like, i genuinely think this song permanently altered my brain chemistry. so much of it just resonate with me — the scathing observations, the metaphors slamming society, the absolute raging emotions in the voice of the singer, the resentment brimming just underneath. it’s a song about mistakes, it’s a song about learning from them or not, it’s a song about conformity and education and straying or conforming to it. it’s a song about questioning the world and ripping apart the people who are too scared to do so. it’s a wickedly poetic song once you rip apart and dissect every little bit of the lyrics, and i fucking love it with all my heart and soul.
too many lyrics in this song. and yet i have always known my favourite lines. “so learn me anything good / and teach me something that works.” there’s something about that that clicks with me so deeply. a single, scathing request: let me learn anything useful at all, and teach me something that can work for me.
also shoutout to the entire coda (outro) of the song for being the best 1m 50s of my life.
tagging: @llondonfog @olivebranch311 @pitruli @digdeepergravedigger09 @lakuronekobaka @pixelfun20 @reubeam @0rchidm4ntis (cheating? by also tagging friends who follow my main but not this sideblog? sue me. also i hope y’all are ok w being tagged in this HGFNDHGDF sorry if youre not ;;; just ignore if that’s the case)

Unforgettable, that’s what we are
Summary
When he arrives at Hob's house, Dream is surprised to hear him singing along a song that is playing on the radio. Curious to know what his lover is thinking when he sings, Dreams probes his mind and is pleasantly surprised.
What if he made Hob's dream come true?

Flufftober Day 4 - Music
Song sung by Hob, Unforgettable -Nat King Cole
On AO3
Rating G - 1097 words
Tumblr media
When Dream appeared in the hallway at the entrance to Hob's apartment, he was surprised to hear music coming from the kitchen. Then he smiled when he heard Hob's surprisingly melodious voice singing over the singer's voice.
He halted for a moment to listen to it.
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me
Never before has someone been more unforgettable
Dream wondered what Hob was thinking about while singing this song and allowed himself a little insight into his mind.
He gasped at the vision that his lover's ever so surprising mind was showing him.
He and Hob were on a beach illuminated only by a few lanterns placed here and there. In the middle, barefoot and dressed in white, they were embracing and dancing, swaying slowly to the rhythm of the same song Hob was singing right now in his kitchen. The landscape, the atmosphere were heavenly and Dream marveled at the beauty that Hob's mind could create.
Moreover, he was overwhelmed by the idea of being part of it.
Unforgettable
In every way
And forever more
That's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
Dream left Hob's mind and while Hob continued to sing, he went to the kitchen and leaned against the doorframe to watch his lover without him being aware of it.
Hob had his back to him and was swaying to the music while washing the dishes. Dream looked at him fondly, delighted to see him in such a joyful mood and of course secretly happy about what the music was inspiring in his lover's mind. Delighted to be in some way the reason for his smile.
But Dream wanted more. He didn't just want to witness this joy, he wanted to be a part of it entirely. He stepped forward unbeknownst to Hob, who continued to sing while drying his hands.
That's why, darling
It's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am
Unforgettable, too.
With a quick, smooth motion, Dream took Hob's wrist, spun him around and wrapped his arms around his neck. He smiled at the startled look on his lover's face, holding him close as he began to sway to the music.
Hob instinctively wrapped his arms around Dream's waist and, raising his head to look at him, he asked, puzzled, "Dream, what are you doing?"
Dream looked at him with a smile and said softly, "It seems to me that I am dancing with my beloved."
Suddenly Hob raised one of his hands and pinched his own cheek, "Ouch!"
Dream laughed softly, "I assure you, you are not dreaming."
Hob tied his arms around Dream's waist again and replied, "I had to check it out, it seems to be something straight out of my mind."
Dream murmured, "I know."
Hob, not fooled, gave him a knowing look before resting his head on his shoulder, "I forgive you this incursion into my head, since my dream is coming true."
Dream, his chin on Hob's head, tightened his arms around his shoulders and they continued a few moments to sway on the song.
Then Hob lifted his head from Dream's shoulder, brought his face to his, and sang softly against his lips, "Unforgettable, in every way, and forever more that's how you'll stay."
He closed the distance between them and kissed him tenderly. When he pulled back, it was Dream who chased his lips and now their lips were pressing against each other with soft caresses, separating to melt again immediately. They continued to kiss like this until they were forced to separate to catch their breath.
Dream, thinking of the lyrics that Hob had whispered before kissing him, asked, "Am I the unforgettable one?"
With a cheeky glint in his eye, Hob replied, "Well, since June 7th of the year of our Lord 1389, I have not been able to forget this mysterious and handsome stranger who challenged me to meet him again a hundred years later."
Dream retorted in the same tone, "Well, I couldn't forget that Hob Gadling either, who proclaimed loudly that death was stupid and that he wouldn't die. And who smiled at me in such a seductive way."
They looked at each other in silence before they both started laughing, then Hob snuggled up to Dream and closed his eyes as they continued to sway to the song that was unfortunately coming to its end.
Dream whispered into Hob's hair, "Open your eyes."
Hob obeyed and could do nothing but gasp. They were no longer in his kitchen, but on the beach of his imagination, dressed in white, and barefoot. He marveled at the warm sand beneath his feet. Hob looked around and saw that not a detail was missing. From the starry sky to the lanterns, from the palm trees lightly stirred by the warm breeze Hob could feel on his skin to the soft sounds of the sea just behind them. And that is when the music started and he could recognize the song he was singing in his kitchen just before.
Hob was amazed by this strange feeling of being in a waking dream. Then Dream wrapped his arms around him once again and they resumed the dance started in the kitchen. They danced slowly under the stars during the whole song and even when it ended, they didn't let go of each other.
They continued to sway to the ghost of a melody that belonged only to them.
It was just perfect and neither of them wanted this moment to end.
Hob whispered into Dream's neck, "I wish we could stay like this forever."
Dream smiled and gave him a lingering kiss on the forehead before resting his chin on Hob's head as he replied, "We may not be able to stay here forever, but this place is ours alone and we can come back whenever we want. All you have to do is ask."
Hob snuggled closer to Dream and whispered, "You are extraordinary you know. Thank you for making my dream a reality."
He felt Dream smile against his hair as he replied, "That's what you've been doing for me all along and you didn't need any power for that."
Hob laughed softly against Dream's chest and stated, "I told you before, we are the perfect match."
Dream hummed in acknowledgement and they stayed like that for a long time, dancing in silence, enjoying the magic of the moment.
After all, they didn't need any other music than their hearts beating in unison.

game time! get to know me! (boy i thought i posted this a week ago!!! turned out it's still in my drafts 🫠)
tagged by these lovely people @reyesstrand @tailoredshirt @lemonlyman-dotcom ✨
favourite animal : not really a pet person + I'm extremely allergic to cats but i adore my twin brother's cat Lolo (don't have pics of her sadly)
favourite film : I actually rarely watch films anymore however watching the 1997 Silver Springs live performance and stevie nicks belting out NEVER GET AWAY NEVER GET AWAY right in lindsey's face gives more drama than actual cinema. it's my favourite!
favourite season : spring or fall! but honestly? summer has my heart (global warming and extreme heat waves DON'T), i just thrive in sunny weather, something about sun and sunlight making everything so bright and then exploding in strong hues of oranges at the end of the day is so inspiring and magical ✨
character(s) : carlos reyes and tk strand my beloveds!! i love and resonate with these two so so much and I'm so grateful that this show came into my life because it filled it with so much light i didn't know i needed. the way i find myself seen and inspired by the relevancy and the love and their inherent goodness is the greatest feeling ever.
Colour : yellow!!! I just always think of that quote by conor oberst "i really just wanna be warm yellow light that pours all over everyone I love"
Hobby : READING!! and LISTENING TO MUSIC !! and creating playlists, i also love editing preexisting art and making moodboards and artworks that have connection with either music or poetry. I love creation in general and I'll use any tools i have to make whatever i want to express come to life.
Book : Crush by Richard Siken. But I also HAVE to mention The Firehouse by @paperstorm, my current obsession (I'm two chapters behind don't look at me OK), because I know when a story immediately carves a forever place in my heart. And i'm too in love with the out of whack world of the Firehouse. It's flawed and smudged with deep pains. and the tension of IT ALL because everything is dancing on a fine line and the flashback scenes bleeding into the crushing reality and how the characterization that's so true to the story that's being told also have the foundational canon dynamics and characteristics that's so familiar and dimensional. The complex depths of this TK and his significant weaknesses, his hurts and his heart and the way love and the proximity of gentleness send him spiraling because of the lost love and the pent up love and all of it hitting him through his absolute conviction that he's disposable and unlovable ajdlfkjasdfsjs i just.......... I'M HOWLING LIKE A BEAST. God andie @paperstorm HOW DARE YOU. HOW ARE YOU SO GODLIKE TALENTED 😖 I'm currently piecing together an artwork/moodboard for the Firehouse and curating a playlist for it that has been basically what I've been listening to for the past couple of months and can't wait to share this wip :'))
Song : Nobody Loves Me like You Do, Patrick Droney (from my Firehouse AU playlist 👀 "Our whole life on the line, I've never felt a light as bright as you" losing my shit over those lyrics as we speak
Drink : tea and coffee!!! I live and breathe caffeine (see, i own everything yellow).
tagging is open for everybody! feel free to join friends 💛
