After the death of Abraham Erskine, Bucky wanted to put Project Rebirth behind him. Parading around on stage was not how he wanted to honor the good men who lost their lives, especially when he was fit to hold up his end of the bargain.

Despite his best efforts to distance himself from the gaudy mantle, a navy cowl appears at base camp framing a familiar pair of blue eyes. Memories of the best part of his last few years surface, and Bucky is reminded of what he left back in Brooklyn.

He quickly realizes just how much he has sacrificed for the greater good, but it seems the universe has decided to reward his efforts with a taste of something sweeter, if only for one night.

Summary:

After going AWOL and leaving SHIELD under cover of darkness, Steve Rogers has been on the run for the last year. He’s been to every corner of the United States, never staying for more than a couple of days to keep himself off SHIELD’s radar.

In Homer, Alaska, he meets a shopkeeper named Bucky. Sparks fly between them from the start, and every ounce of self-preservation that Steve has learned in the past year is thrown out the window as he is taken by the desire to learn more about Bucky.

Their romance blooms quickly, but they are both keeping a piece of themselves hidden. Bucky has a daughter that he’s fiercely protective of, and Steve can’t bring himself to tell Bucky his true identity while SHIELD is still after him.

When SHIELD eventually comes knocking, Steve and Bucky find out that their lives are far more intertwined than they could have possibly known.

“You must know all the go-to spots around the town then, huh?” Steve leans forward, resting his forearms on the tabletop as he makes himself comfortable. It’s been so long since Steve’s allowed himself the time to just talk to somebody — it’s nice.

Bucky tilts his head back with a laugh, mirroring Steve’s position from across the counter. “Go-to spots?” he repeats with another laugh, his nose crinkling; the movement causes Steve’s eyes to catch on the small hoop nestled snugly into his nostril. “Where d’you think you are, pal? New York? Anywhere you could wanna go around here is within spitting distance of the pier.”

“No,” Steve says with a shake of his head, his body still bowed down close, “it’s definitely not New York.”
