The scenes of Luke training Percy were so expertly written. He wasn’t just training Percy, he was actively recruiting Percy. He fuels Percy’s anger and mistrust of the gods. He didn’t even need to alter how Percy saw the gods because he could already see the resentment Percy had of his dad, mirroring his own. He was absolutely sure he had Percy on his side but he didn’t account for one thing, Percy’s fatal flaw. Percy’s loyalty to his family and friends supersedes all else. Luke can’t betray Annabeth, almost kill him, Grover and Annabeth, put his mother in a dangerous position, and then expect him to be on his side. That is where he fails.

I see a lot of people talking about the duel between Luke and Percy, and while a lot of people are correctly interpreting the moment where Percy cuts Luke and immediately apologizes and lowers his guard as another moment revealing Percy's fatal flaw --loyalty and love for his friends, an inability to contemplate betrayal and a habit of giving mercy/redemption to those people-- I think a lot of people are misinterpreting, or glossing over the next moment--when Luke retaliates

people seems to be reading the moment where Luke strikes Percy back, knocking him to the ground and drawing blood as a comment on Luke's cruelty and violence,(in contrast with Percy's loyalty and mercy) and while i don't think that's wrong, I think a better way to look at the moment is that Luke's reaction reveals his fatal flaw.

its never explicitly stated in the books, But Rick Riordan mentioned it after The Last Olympian in interviews. Lukes fatal flaw is Wrath. he is angry, blindingly, overwhelmingly angry at the gods, and Kronos is able to manipulate and twist that anger until things go so far Luke is forced to destroy himself to save the world

The duel between Luke and Percy is such a brillant scene, yes because Luke and Percy are foils, yes we see Percy's fatal flaw in Crystal clarity. but we see Luke's too--he reacts in a surge of anger knocking Percy to the ground, making him bleed, ignoring Percys apology because in the moment he doesn't care about reconciliation only revenge, he hesitates only just before killing Percy, his rage taking over. Luke doesn't make Percy bleed in this scene in a moment of cold or calculated cruelty. its swift burning and unthinking anger. its his doom. because the next moment Annabeth reveals herself, sides with Percy, and Luke runs off, isolated, where, if you've read the books, he becomes even more tragically isolated from his friends and vulnerable to Kronos' manipulation

Loyalty and Wrath cost them both in that fight. their fatal flaws indeed.

i don't really think of percy as cynical or a pessimist bc he's so bad at it. like, even when he's at his lowest, when he's lost everything in tlt, he looks at the world and is angry bc it's so beautiful.

I see a lot of posts along the lines of “how are they gonna justify this version of Percy not joining Luke by the end of season???” And I think it’s worth remembering that Luke doesn’t actually try to recruit Percy at the end of the lightning thief, he shows up like hey I’m the lightning thief and I’m going to kill you with scorpions.

So I feel like that might be enough to stop Percy joining him.

in the lightning thief percy tries to control his anger but can’t and this results in him unconsciously using his powers to lash out and dunk nancy bobofit in a fountain. he does this in order to protect his friend.

in the last olympian, rachel tells percy “you are not the hero”, and chiron interrupts before he can respond; “i wanted to yell at him to go away, but of course i couldn’t. i tried to get my emotions under control. i felt like i had another personal hurricane swirling around me.” he then successfully gets his emotions under control, and utilizes that calm to get rachel the help she needs from chiron.

both of these circumstances are like, wow, personal loyalty goes HARD. and it’s so cool and i just. i love comparing these scenes because it’s like, the first scene demonstrates percy’s inability to control his anger, specifically when HIS FRIENDS get hurt. and then, this later scene in TLO demonstrates how he will go AGAINST his own personal anger in order to help a friend.

like it’s just so cool to see percy’s fatal flaw in every interaction he has in the series. he will get HIMSELF into trouble to protect his friends (pushing nancy bobofit). he will IGNORE his own emotional pain to protect his friends (rachel tells him he’s “not the hero”, and he feels like shit garbage, but he puts aside his questions and confusion and annoyance so that chiron can help rachel, because percy knows rachel has Sight and chiron can help her).

like idk if i’m making complete sense with this or if i’m getting at my point specifically enough but just. AUGH. PERSONAL LOYALTY. I LOVE PERCY JACKSON SO SO SO MUCH. AAAAAAAAA.

To clarify, we have Mask, Lore, and Wind versus Everybody Else, except that Oni and Shadow are eating popcorn on the sidelines and not part of Everybody Else?

Well... I think Everybody Else would win, because of numbers. Not that it wouldn't be a frankly ridiculous fight, which would likely reach levels of destruction previously unseen, but we should remember that nobody will be using lethal force here.

Like, just because Wind can hit everybody with lightning until he fries their nervous systems and their brains shut down and their blood literally boils in their veins, doesn't mean that he will. Or even wants to, for that matter. His Grandma raised him right, you know.

So yeah, personally my vote would be on Everybody Else

P.S. I don't have the Wolf Link amiibo, but I was also sad to hear that he would not be making a return in TotK. I can understand why they would do that, though, because I can only imagine the programming nightmares that spawning him in the Sky and in the Depths would cause

at some point tho. i need someone (probably me) to draw lightning and sakura outfit swap. the two are the same in my brain bc older sister who cares a lot about younger sister. the only difference is that sakura is at least better at emotional connection to her sister than lightning is but there is. there is a similarity.... trust me.
