You know the more I've thought about it, the fact that Charlie and Vaggie do a romantic reprise of 'More Than Anything' feels like a strong indicator not just that Chaggie will end up being framed as a thematic parallel/foil to Lilith and Lucifer, but also that Charlie is specifically meant to be the counterpart to Lilith; the (half)human woman who inspires Hell through song, and Vaggie the counterpart to Lucifer; the fallen angel who fell in love with her.

I see a lot of people talking about the duel between Luke and Percy, and while a lot of people are correctly interpreting the moment where Percy cuts Luke and immediately apologizes and lowers his guard as another moment revealing Percy's fatal flaw --loyalty and love for his friends, an inability to contemplate betrayal and a habit of giving mercy/redemption to those people-- I think a lot of people are misinterpreting, or glossing over the next moment--when Luke retaliates
people seems to be reading the moment where Luke strikes Percy back, knocking him to the ground and drawing blood as a comment on Luke's cruelty and violence,(in contrast with Percy's loyalty and mercy) and while i don't think that's wrong, I think a better way to look at the moment is that Luke's reaction reveals his fatal flaw.
its never explicitly stated in the books, But Rick Riordan mentioned it after The Last Olympian in interviews. Lukes fatal flaw is Wrath. he is angry, blindingly, overwhelmingly angry at the gods, and Kronos is able to manipulate and twist that anger until things go so far Luke is forced to destroy himself to save the world
The duel between Luke and Percy is such a brillant scene, yes because Luke and Percy are foils, yes we see Percy's fatal flaw in Crystal clarity. but we see Luke's too--he reacts in a surge of anger knocking Percy to the ground, making him bleed, ignoring Percys apology because in the moment he doesn't care about reconciliation only revenge, he hesitates only just before killing Percy, his rage taking over. Luke doesn't make Percy bleed in this scene in a moment of cold or calculated cruelty. its swift burning and unthinking anger. its his doom. because the next moment Annabeth reveals herself, sides with Percy, and Luke runs off, isolated, where, if you've read the books, he becomes even more tragically isolated from his friends and vulnerable to Kronos' manipulation
Loyalty and Wrath cost them both in that fight. their fatal flaws indeed.

A meme by yours truly :3c
I do love Spirk and Garashir because they are Soulmates and I stand by that, but character foil ships excite something in me I cannot describe. They have the same level of unspoken-ness as the soulmates but they hate each other so their character development is more fun. Need me some more gay guys who just fucking hate each other.

Jewelers often put shiny metal foil underneath a gem to make the stone shine brighter, or display them on dark velvet to bring attention to their brightness. A literary foil serves a similar purpose: To provide contrast to another character by accentuating their differences. [x]

Tim & Duke Are Mirrors
Tim became Robin because "Batman needs a Robin" and Duke because "Robin doesn't need Batman."
Tim grew up rich with preoccupied parents, Duke grew up poor with attentive parents.
When training Tim, Bruce thought about how Tim could die like Jason did. When training Duke, Bruce thought about how Duke could use what he learned for things Bruce doesn't approve of like Jason has.

NETTLES AND RHAENYRA, CHARACTER FOILS.
Because I'm not an English teacher
Tumblr media
So the question is, How is Nettles Rhaenyra's foil?
1. Appearance .
Rhaenyra is a pretty standard Valyrian beauty. Silver locks, purple eyes, quite pretty, later on in life we get the change that she didn't lose the wait after giving birth to her kids and becùase of misogyny, her beauty has faded. Features like her long hair worn in the style of Visenya and so on are also mentioned. It's giving the Realm's delight in a real sense (not the weird sense).
Nettles, on the other hand, is juxtaposed as 'ugly'. She's brown, is skinny, has crooked teeth, a nose scar, and has short hair.
Tumblr media
The maesters like to play to damn much, basically. But they are described as almost exact opposites. Short and long hair, skinny and fat, white and brown skin, purple and brown eyes, etc.
The narrative purpose is to ultimately show their different upbringing and places in this society.
2. Status
Rhaenyra is shown to be the princess, heir to the throne and queen throughout the book. No matter what happens with her, the security and privilege she has almost always goes over what other women have. Her only real threat is the men (and book Alicent) who have personal stake in her not ascending her throne. She's also entirely spoilt as princess and heir by her father and more so her uncle.
Nettles, on the other hand, is introduced to us as an orphan from Driftmark. We're told she could've been a thief and a sex worker by the time we met her. She has no name, lands, titles, or family that we are presented with in the narrative and her backstory for better or less is a patchwork of what her life was possibly like on Driftmark.
Unlike Rhaenyra, we don't follow every salacious rumour and really don't know much about her past.
3. Dragons
Rhaenyra’s dragon Syrax was a cradle egg hatched to her, a Targaryen custom. She's also the youngest dragonrider at 7 I believe.
Nettles claims her dragon at no older than 16 years old. He is a wild dragon (a distinction given to hatched Targaryen dragons that haven't been riden and live away from the keep) and slaughters many before she claims him.
4. Virtue
The notion of virtue in asoiaf is extremely complex, especially with these two women and the vastly different backgrounds. But virginity and speculation also develops both their characterizations in the narrative.
Rhaenyra allegedly "sleeps" with Daemon to practise what she wants to do with Criston (she's 15-). In the show, it becomes obvious that she almost sleeps with Daemon and officially sleeps with Criston. Either way, promiscuity and naivety are written into her character. The only point of conflict is who is involved with what happened in these instances less than what happened. Later on her promiscuity is brought up when Ser Harwin Strong is said to be the father of her first three children.
On the other hand, Nettles' sexual promiscuity is given to her in the narrative. The claims of her being a whore or sleeping around with shepherds are claims made by men who don't know what she was doing at that time. Men who made similar claims about Rhaenyra and their involvement in her loss of virtue as well. Where these stories differ is in Maidenpool, where the assumption of promiscuity is given a different voice.
This time, maids are alluding to an inappropriately close relationship between Daemon and Nettles (yet again, he finds himself here).
5. Daemon
Speak of the devil, and he will appear.
Tumblr media
His dynamic is important to these women and their place in the narrative. Saving one dooms the other, leaving with one isolated the other. His decisions ultimately affect one while benefiting the other.
The cruellest example of this dynamic is him letting Nettles go after being the reason she is trapped in the narrative and ultimately dooming Rhaenyra by choosing to kill Aemond instead of going back to her.
His dynamic with both was also comparable with gift giving and quality time and even inappropriate relationship he developed with both of them, notably around similar ages. ( Both these relationships have significant power imbalances).
Between them both, his affection to one affects the other detrimentally.
6. Jace
Specifically in reference to his death, it's notable that within the narrative, while Nettles is described as crying by herself in response to his death, Rhaenyra is hardened by it.
Also, as symbols for legitimacy and legacy, Jace is the reason Nettles is recognised as a dragonseed, and Rhaenyra's line is secured as her first born, but in his absence, Nettles is delegitimised and said to be not a dragonseed. Around that time, Rhaenyra is beginning to be questioned by all the men around her as well, whereas before, Jace was a notable voice in decisions.
7. Dragons in the End.
They both meet their 'end' in the narrative with Dragons. Rhaenyra is killed by her brother's dragon Sunfyre burns and eats her, killing her in front of her son.
Nettles, however, escapes the narrative on dragonback, with the stories that follow explicitly explaining how dragon fire protects her and leads her to become a deity for the burned men.
8. Children
In the narrative, Nettles has no children. Children would explicitly be a burden in her described circumstances as a mouth to feed and someone else to care for. Effectively, children would trap Nettles in a cycle of poverty and inability to experience ethe freedom presented in the narrative.
Rhaenyra is expected to have children to secure her legacy and reign. Children, especially sons, would be her greatest benefit to ensure her ascension to the throne. They are her biggest strategy and losses throughout the war because of that reason.
This dynamic carries out to a head with the death decree for Nettles. The possibility that she would have a child by Daemon is a definitive reason that her 'treason' calls for her head. A child would give her a claimant but also be proof of infidelity by Daemon. It would be a slight to Rhaenyra’s pride and grief as she at this point has lost 4 children during the war.
9. Loyalty of men
This is one of the most interesting for me because the disloyalty of men for Rhaenyra meant the loyalty of men to Nettles. When the Mootons decide not to kill her, they are traitors to Rhaenyra. When Daemon lets her leave, he's a traitor to Rhaenyra. When Corlys stands up for both her and Addam, he's treated like a traitor. Furthermore, the Mootons turn to Aegon’s side directly after because they did not obey her for two reasons, Nettles being accused and sentenced without trial, and Rhaenyra wanting them to break guest right.
Within the narrative, at that point, loyalty to Rhaenyra was a sentence on Nettles' life, and loyalty to Nettles was treason to Rhaenyra.
Conclusion.
In other ways, like the impact of their legacy, the symbols of their identity (dragons), other ways that their narratives with Daemon (the stories) play out and so on juxtapose these women against each other in the narrative. Age and innocence in both a meta and narrative sense also play into Nettles being a foil for Rhaenyra’s character. Personally I think the reason ts written that way is for Nettles to cause a Stark difference in behaviour with men like Daemon and the Mootons as well as to show the contrast of what is expected and what is to be done and what actually happens.
Hope this helps 🩷🤎

my most controversial opinion about the batfam really is that fact that i don't think cass and jason get along.
why would cass, the one person who believes in no killing even more than bruce, be getting along with jason, the man who believes that killing is necessary to improve things?
i love both of them and i get where they're both coming from, and of course, there's a lot of nuance to the relationship.
jason doesn't have anything against vigilantes who don't kill (just batman, for personal reasons), and cass would definitely want to get to know her brother and probably try to sway him from the path of killing, but they're both paralells to each other in the worst way.
they're both very determined and ruthless in their own ideologies and as much as i would love the older sister cass & younger brother jason dynamic, i really don't think they would get along.
cass would dislike jason for being raised by batman, the man who taught her that not killing was an option, and still choosing to kill.
jason wouldn't hate cass, but he'd definitely dislike her incredibly strong stance against killing and it's doubtful he would try to get to know her all that well anyway.
i'm still gonna enjoy all the fanworks with this duo though, lol.

Xander Matthews & Min Jeung - Narrative Foil Trait Compilation #1
How does this series work?
This is my narrative foil disection series for Danganronpa Despair Time based on my post Danganronpa: Depsair Time foils theory. The presented theory is that the CH1 recap shows off all narrative foils in DR:DT based on how the pairings in said recap video are paired. This series will go through all 8(?) of these foil pairings and disect the dichotomy present in them in a more in depth manner. I will do this primarily by comparing and contrasting Backstory, Motive, Flaws & Character Arc. (Credit to Barbieronpa for that compliation of concepts.) All of these posts will contain heavy spoilers and will be updated as the series goes on and more information on the characters is presented. If you are interested in the those updates please return to each of these posts after the end of an episode batch. This will only look at presented content within the series;outside of the foil theory itself it will not take into account theories & speculation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Backstory
Xander: -> Born in the States. Went overseas for some type of private schooling in the UK. -> Had a family of at least 3 members left behind in the states. Presumed/Implied heavy poverty. -> Family died of a waterborne illness while he was away at private schooling. This incident had something to do with Duke Spurling. -> Their deaths were particularly gruesome. -> This incident resulted in Xander becoming the Ultimate Rebel -> At some point during the timeskip of around 2 years before the prologue Xander lost an eyes. It is not clear how he lost his eye. Min: -> Born into a family with at least two parents and no known siblings. -> When she was young her family had some financial struggles. The depths of this were not explored but it was severe enough to encourage drastic action. -> Min was visited by a member of X-Tech Future when she was young who offered the potential for Min to join a competition for the title of Ultimate Student. He funded her family so long as she continued this pursuit. -> This resulted in Min dedicating her whole life to becoming the Ultimate Student and never being able to accept anything less than perfection. -> Min eventually took the test for becoming the Ultimate Student. She's sure she didn't score perfectly on this test, but, instead won because she exhibited the qualities the Academy most desired in an 'Ultimate Student'. Compare/Contrast: -> Both born into families which struggled financially. -> Both suffered because of the whims of some bigger corporation. -> Min dealt with X-Future Tech while Xander dealt with the Spurling Foundation. (More accurately, a politician who was heavily funded by the Spurling foundation.) -> Rebel V. Student Dynamic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Personality
Xander: -> Energetic -> Loud -> Active -> Emotion Based -> Extraverted Min: -> Lethargic -> Quiet -> Passive -> Logic Based -> Intraverted
Tumblr media
Motive
Xander: -> Xander was motivated by the death of his family to oppose the big corporations which caused his suffering to begin with. -> Xander's personal convictions were strengthened as a result of the suffering he experienced. Min: -> The suffering Min experienced as a result of the corporation largely benefited her family. -> Min's personal convictions were weakened as a result of the suffering she experienced. Compare/Contrast: -> Both are largely motivated by the corporation which harmed them. -> Xander takes a proactive role as a result of this while Min takes a reactive, passive role as a result of this.
Tumblr media
Flaws
Xander: -> Xander is impulsive and his emotions are easily toyed with / influenced by others. Especially those he already respects. -> Xander is willing to justify bad behavior if it aids him in succeeding at his goals;he is 'self righteous'. Min: -> Min is slow to act and open up to others. She passively accepts the world as it is and doesn't act until absolutley forced to. -> Min is emotionally closed off and represses her desires for something different. She has too many regrets to accept simply dying. Compare/Contrast: -> Both were willing to justify the deaths of others if it meant achieving their own goals;this was largely for two very different reasons. -> Xander was too willing to risk it all while Min waited too long to do anything at all.
Tumblr media
Character Arc
Xander: -> Xander tries to get another student who is closed off to open up and trust others -> Xander chooses to betray this person and attempt to murder her because some unknown party instructed him to do so -> Xander fails because he rushes ahead without thinking of the consequences Min: -> Min wants to open up to others because she's spent most of her life focusing on nothing but her talent -> Min is very passive in this pursuit and ultimately it results in her accidentally killing another. -> Min 'saves' somebody and then uses this to justify her pursuit of self preservation in the trial. -> Min fails because it took her literally facing death to make a strong decision - and this decision costed another's and her own life. Compare/Contrast: -> Min and Xander both tried to 'save' another person who they ultimately betrayed in the pursuit of their own goals. -> Min and Xander both died on an impulse decision without thinking of the consequences.

This is just a dump post cause I think too much about a dog guy
So I made an OC called Dogman (he's a superhero, because obviously.), basically being a dog in human form but my goodness do I make things...
He is every dog motif in one person. He refuses to give up on anyone, even those who are far beyond saving. He will go through great pain and hurt to protect everyone from anything. He doesn't understand when someone doesn't like him or doesn't want to be his friend. He tries and tries to gain positivity in everyone's eyes. He has a boiling point. He barks, snarls, bites. He is good, he hopes.
Protecting his small town, he's adored by everyone. No one wants him to leave. Not even his nemesis, Sterling Shaw.
They make me want to scream.
Sterling "I can control people simply by touching them" Shaw & Connor "I've never been afraid to touch you" Cairn.
Sterling "everyone leaves me so I'll kick them even harder" Shaw & Connor "I'll never leave, no matter how hard they kick" Cairn.
Sterling "I'll destroy Connor, I'll ruin him" Shaw & Connor "I'll save Sterling, I'll protect him" Cairn.
DO. YOU. FUCKING. SEE.
Sterling has never had a friendship unbound. He doesn't understand giving. Only taking and taking. He has never had a connection not built on chains and demands. He latches onto his slaves' need to obey. They need his orders like they need air. He is bad, he knows.
They're sick. I love them.
Also I made a playlist for them, if you're interested!! It's mostly Mitski, cause I have a problem.
I came up with this idea and these characters YESTERDAY and they've rotted my brain.
I need someone else to understand my vision. Please.

So here’s something interesting:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did anyone else notice that despite his concern for and wanting to reconnect with his sister, at no point does Blitzo try to apologize or otherwise take ownership of whatever it is he did that clearly HURT Barbie Wire so much in the past?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which I think makes for a very notable and interesting contrast to how Moxxie handled his relationship problems/screw-ups this episode.
Like I’m starting to think that the M&Ms posing as siblings this episode wasn’t just setup for a joke, but also so they can act as a foil to how Blitzo is handling, and screwing up, his own relationship/family issues.

Danny Phantom Character Foils;
Clockwork and the Observants
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both have the ability to see the future, both are able to do something about it (though Clockwork obviously has special time powers, whereas the observers can only act in the present, in an attempt to alter the future). However, Clockwork chooses to act, where the observers stand still.
The observers abide by the rules, the protocols, their oath, ect. Clockwork throws out the rules, if it’s for the better.
Clockwork sees all the twists and turns that life and people might take. He sees all the choices one might choose. He sees all the possible futures, viewing time through alternate reality or multiverse type lenses.
The observers (weather by choice or due to lack of ability) only see one future. Whatever timeline they see on the screen in front of them, is, in their eyes, the one that will come to pass - predestination lenses.
-Although it can be noted that, contradictorally, the observers, obviously, believe the future can be changed, at least through drastic measures, if acted on by an outside force.
The observers focus on the needs of the many, willing to sacrifice one for it.
Clockwork focuses/puts value on that one, wishing to save them (which, in the case of Danny, also works out for the many)

thoughts on azula redemption
as interesting as azula getting a redemption arc is from a speculative position, something that I always thought while watching the series is how the whole point of her character is that she… doesn’t?
the thing is this: azula and zuko are characters that, while good on their own, especially shine when placed next to each others: emotionless and emotional, the favorite and the failure, blue and red etc.
their journeys’ emotional beats often drop at the same time—we can especially see this around the boiling rock arc. zuko is working together with sokka, suki and the prisoners, strengthening his connections to other people in direct contrast to azula, who loses mai and ty lee. the former informs zuko’s redemption arc and the latter contributes to azula’s downward spiral
so at the end, when azula breaks down, it is all the more heartbreaking how she fails to escape her flaws and her trauma when we see how zuko conquered his, just as it was all the more rewarding seeing zuko’s growing empathy and compassion next to someone who never escaped ozai’s mentality. as stated before, both archetypes are good on their own, but the dialogue between them is what makes this aspect of atla so impactful and memorable
(no hate to azula-redemption supporters at all btw, just thinking about her character from a narrative standpoint)

Tanya and Kitana might be literary foils.
Tanya:
Older, starting to show signs of aging
Not all that sexualized despite belonging to the Royal Big Tiddy Sisterhood
Raspy voice and austere aesthetic
Gruff, abrasive personality, Does Not Fuck Around
Devout follower of Delia and Argus (who are hopefully not awful in this timeline)
In a relationship with another woman and unimpressed by Earthrealm men completely
Kitana:
Youthful, definitely the baby sister
The Hot One of this timeline, despite more modest endowments
Rich, smooth voice and glam aesthetic
Sweet puppy dog personality, but also playful, kind of a jobber tbh
Confronts Liu Kang with the problem of evil like a disillusioned Christian
Has risque intros with Johnny Cage and one or two where she teases Kenshi
Yet despite being so different, there's one thing that ties them together: they both love Mileena immensely and would help her hide a body.
