Re: Actual Serious Medieval Politics Anime, and I'm guessing Spice and Wolf doesn't count, A Genius Prince's Guide To Raising a Nation Out of Debt was pretty fun. Alderamin on the Sky didn't get too far into its storyline, but was also quite enjoyable. (Neither are isekai, though.)

Yeah I love Spice and Wolf, as an economist its totally my jam, but its A: got that everyday merchant focus (and 30% of the time sexy wolf/fox focus) so while politics happens it tends to happen around the characters, they don't *do* politics they *survive* politics.

And B: its not an isekai, and by that I don't just mean "no one teleports in from another world", I mean it was made in 2006. Around ~2010 the rise of the Naro-kei genre in light novels, and Sword Art Online as its anime poster child, dramatically changed anime's tropes & focus in the fantasy genre. Like, Twelve Kingdoms (2002) is an isekai - highschool girl taken to fantasy distaff China to run a nation - but its also totally not an isekai, it shares absolutely none of the tropes or themes. Its also one of the best anime of all time by the way, its absolutely the Serious Politics Anime I am asking for outside of this quibble, I should have mentioned it.

I enjoyed A Genius Prince quite a lot! Really respected how often the 'genius' prince's plans blew up in his face, and how grounded the main duo was despite the comedic tone and zany things happening. But I think "comedic" is key here - while its not a full-on-comedy its a lot of good-time silliness, meaning the politics gets dumbed down to match, understandably. In particular the villains in A Genius Prince are one-note dumb dumbs forever holding the idiot ball. Making the two competing commanders equally the main characters in Legend of Galatic Heroes was one of its genius moves - it means neither can be reduced to an obstacle for the other side to blow past.

I do not know Alderamin of the Sky! Did it get cancelled or not finish, or is it one of those "we are waiting for season 2" deals?

Loved this moment.

The supporters of the coup kept hiding behind the guise that they were fighting against corruption. However, Yang correctly points out that in wanting to fight political corruption in the alliance... the coup plotters introduced a different form of corruption to government! Instead of bribery and hoarding power, they cracked down on freedoms and rights, which made them in the end just as bad as the gouvernment they were fighting against.

9. Legend of Galactic Heroes

This is here because I never actually ended watching it because IT MADE NO SENSE. So yeah, I just didn't felt like watching it. The scripwritter needs a lesson on international relationships.

8. Ergo Proxy.

It is not a bad show, it just has no consistancy. The episodic story to overall/background story ratio was not right. It was too focused in the actual episodic story and the thing with the virus and the postapocaliptic stuff and how unexplained it was and the abscene of conclusion...it is just not great for me even tho it is not a bad show.

7. Code Geass.

I like it. More or less. But it is not good. The topics are so superficial. If you want to talk about politics and revolution don't just use battles and fake deaths because that is just shock factor. I like it. But no.

6. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan is shit. But good shit. It lives on pure dynamic and rythm which is really good but t h e c h a r a c t e r s oh my godness. COHERENCE, WHERE ARE YOU? Nope, sorry. I understand you want to make charismatic characters but if you sacrifice common sense and try to make catharsis with sad songs and tears I need coherence.

5. Yurikuma Arashi

NO. Just NO. I know, nice art, nice references, nice designs...but oh godness, the script, THE SCRIPT. No cohesion at all, so much symbolism, so much devices for...nothing. No topic treated, no character construction, no cohesion, no consistancy...I hate you freaking bear rain.

4. Clannad

I'M GOING TO KILL YOU, FREAKING KILL YOU, AAAAAAAAAAAH. You had shitty humor in your first season, but it made sense: good actions have a recompense. It was mediocre. And then it comes the second season and YOU GET MELODRAMATIC, YOU START TORTURING YOUR CHARACTERS AND RUIN AN AVERAGE DIRECTION WITH CONTINOUS SPEECH. DO YOU THINK WHEN PEOPLE IS SAD A MOMENT OF SILENCE SAYS LESS THAN "I'm sad...buuuuuuuu"?! I know you're a Tokyo Mew Mew fan, but did you think about why the 2002 anime (and some of the "popular" magical girls) only got one season (51 to 52 episodes only) that didn't get a second season (or more) to continue the story, instead of getting a reboot ? (I don't much like anime get rebooted)

But some of the magical girls anime (NOT includes Salior moon and Pretty Cure franchise) do had season 2 (or more)?

Nowadays the og tokyo mew mew would be considered a 3 season cour anime / split into 3 seasons if it was to have 52 episodes.

Sailor Moon has multiple seasons because during its airing time the manga was still in development, so the studio and the author had to come up with original / fillers episodes to fill in airing time... While the TV aired this original episodes, Naoko would work on the Manga. And then each arc was split into different seasons (nowadays its still the same).

When tokyo mew mew aired most of the Manga was already completed (when the Anime aired the Manga was entering the last volume/ climax chapters) so the studio had lot of material to adapt and didn't need to create that many fillers in order to let the manga develop.

Why no S2?

Why TMM never got a season 2 is probably because how A La Mode was received, Kodansha request Mia Ikumi to create a new short story (which is they commissioned to be 2 volumes) since it was so short and rushed there was no time for development, reviews and sales were ok... Which meant it wasn't profitable for any studio to grab the project or animated.

Besides the anime had already did its job, which was to help sell the Manga and toys/merchandise (this can be seen with a lot of mahou shoujo's aimed for kids, like precure or even shounen's like beyblade - their main objective is to sell merchandise to kids, that's another reason why so many seasons pop up... To keep younger viewers interested and to profit from their parents money).

Reboots:

Reboots tend to happen cause of the series anniversary, usually they're made as a way to commemorate the franchise X birthday or to finish adaptating the full story without original content (fruits basket) and be faithful to the source material (fruits basket, sailor moon crystal).

Usually they're a goods way to capture new audiences, since new generations are more used to modern anime style, they'll more quickly will watch the reboot in a style their familiar with than to watch a 20 year old version with XX episodes (for example, I love the franchise legend of the galatic heroes but I know 112 eps + movies + ovas can be very tiresome for some viewers... Despite having lot of episodes focused on world and character building the plot sometimes drags on for too long, usually to those type of people who can't stand more than X episodes, I recommend the reboot, although more condensed it does a decent job without dragging on for too much, plus Hirayuki Sawano soundtrack is a plus).

Pre-cure & Co - why so many seasons?

For example the author/director of Ojamo Doremi is also the author of the precure franchise and he directed some seasons.

Since both shows are original studio creation, the author (usually the studio director or project director) can make up as many seasons, movies, ovas as he/she wants because the project belongs to them and it's not based on anything. - This also applies to Princess Tutu which is a studios original.

In short as long it's a studio original and seems to be profitable on sales and viewers ranking it will spawn a lot of seasons.

I was thinking about the four classic novels from Chinese literature that three of them had my initial archetype characters:

In the Romance of Three Kingdoms it has Zhuge Liang which I later realised might be the reason I also like Yang Wen-li from Legend of the Galatic Heroes. And related things. (I joked once Zhuge's just Chinese Merlin)

In Dream of the Red Chamber, I was particularly fond of Daiyu, her fragile physical condition, her sorrow and her intelligence. And her sarcastic mouth.

As for the Journey to the West, I, like every child, admired the Monkey king mostly, the rebellious, sneaky and versatile creature of wonder.
