beginning to think i didn't think this through because i have so much love in my heart that choosing favourite songs feels illegal. they're all my favourite (except for blood which I think is hilarious as a concept but would never voluntarily listen to it) however

vampires will never hurt you - they immediately peaked with this one i genuinely think it's in top 3 songs they've ever written on sheer technical creativity. the first 30 seconds send a spike of pure adrenaline through my body. i could lift a bus if vampires was playing in the bg. absolutely deranged choice for a first single yet absolutely in character for them. love that half the songs off bullets don't even feel like songs that are verse > chorus > verse > chorus > bridge > chorus. they're just stories set against the sicknastiest guitar you've ever heard. but vampires in particular feels like everyone is performing until they pass out the energy doesn't flag for half a second. perfect song. i could listen to it every day and not get tired of it

boy division - iconic from start to finish. the amount of time tourists walked in one me going absolutely sicko mode to this one on slow days is at LEAST 3. love how tongue-in-cheek the lyrics are wrt to legacy and image love that i have listened to this song approximately 4000 times since mid-july and yet i do not know half the lyrics bc someone will not enunciate. putting it after foundations on setlists is such a fun choice because it really doesn't give you a second to breathe. going straight from the healing and awe and resilience of being told to fix your heart IMMEDIATELY into IFALLMYENEMIESTHREWAPARTY--

the foundations of decay - i know i'm prone to exaggeration and hyperbole but this one is dead fucking serious. the first time i listened to foundations i was like oh wow new music! and i liked it well enough but didn't seek it out or really think about it that much the first few times i heard it and then during the summer i saw some fanart and thought oh hm maybe i should give foundations another listen and that time i heard "you must fix your heart" clear as a fucking bell like a bolt of lightning clean through down to the centre of me right when i was experiencing such intense existential dread about turning 25--an age i never thought i'd reach--and not having a stable job or future that i thought i would lay down and die from it. you must fix your heart!! and you must build an altar where it swells!! i just had such a profound experience hearing that lyric and i listened to just the bridge over and over again for a week until i could hear it like static in my ears even when it wasn't playing. you must fix your heart. if i remember and get over my fear of appointments i'm going to get this tattooed on my human body. i mean this forever.

mama - do not need to explain this one. ray toro i would fight god for you thank you for taking a dare to write a rock polka 100% seriously and as a result transgenderizing millions of people across the globe on a daily basis. also up there in top 3 songs they've ever written. screaming YOU SHOULD HAVE RAISED A BABY GIRL I SHOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER SON with thousands of people would both fix me and make me worse. our lady of sorrows - the childhood catholicism really jumped out with this one but in my defense stand up fucking tall don't let them see your back and take my fucking hand and never be afraid again. gay-ass epic of gilgamesh-ass punk song. i know the point is that it's short but also i wish it were 10 minutes long

okay jesus christ we're putting the looks under a read more because i'm going to end up writing a phd thesis on each of them and the good people who followed me for other things shouldn't have to scroll 10 km uphill in the snow to see other posts

i am limiting these looks to recent tour fits because otherwise we will be here for the next 7 years and i will end up burning all the hair off my scalp in another bad dye job SO let's watch me get embarrassing

protestants invented the rapture so they could describe mcr. we knew this one was coming the only question was when a joan outfit was coming and boy howdy did they deliver. i don't know if this one would have been as impactful if there wasn't already a mini-joan canon within their discography but because there have been years and years of build up to gerard going full joan, waking up and seeing this was pure vindication. also helps that i'm a big fan of the og joan fit at voodoofest in 2008 (2007?). love the change from the red skirt that's often associated with joan (especially in millais' painting) to a red cape so that instead it's chainmail all the way down. also there's something so striking about a chainmail gown. apart from the arm braces and the piece at the breastbone there's no real armour, even regular textiles that look like armour--i mean, practicality. you don't wanna pass out midway through na na na. also the BLOOD post-stake joan and the big ass buckle boots! i'm so glad someone got a visual on the boots bc the shoes often make or break an outfit for me and i was trying to figure out wtf they had underrneath the gown without sounding like a perv. the little joan sticker on his wizard noise tower. saints for girls. give this bitch a sword. if i talk about this too long i will be fully insane. moving on

2. high school english teacher who you homoerotically imprinted on but specifically with the jacket + glasses

feel like i do not need to explain this one. best they've ever looked unironically. it was all over for me the second i saw the pearl bracelet. the day after this happened i went to the heterosexual wedding of a high school friend in what i can only describe as a slightly more masc version of this fit which was likened by my friends to both a dead victorian child and a medieval knight. this look was my lockscreen until joan happened and genuinely my life has not known a single moment of peace since. i am not exaggerating when i say that on nights i knew there was a show i had trouble sleeping because i was tormented by the idea of gerard way out in public wearing a cunty little outfit. one night i genuinely woke up in a cold sweat and the first coherent thought was "what if an outfit happened" because i am Extremely Normal. i invented a brand new emotion looking at this and that emotion is 'gender horny' and no i do not know what that means. someone needs to take me out back and old yeller me i can't keep living like this. next

3. cheergate original flavour

i wasn't following the tour rabidly or having Hot Kit Emo Summer yet so the morning after cheergate og i was innocently scrolling through tumblr, saw fanart, and went wait. WAIT. and then mine eyes were blessed by images and the little gay people in my phone going from awe to horniness back to awe at breakneck speed. if this hadn't been on my day off i'm not sure how i would have coped. you think i would have been able to balance a cashbox in the wake of cheergate? i can barely do that under normal circumstances. sometimes gender is a horseshoe that swings back around to you with someone else's euphoria, sometimes it's contagious like laughter. the delicately puffed sleeves are what does me in specifically. puffed sleeves pristine white sneakers tiny little socks smooth ass legs. if i think for more than three minutes about the possibility of the cheerleading dress being the defining outfit of the return era i immediately get a tension headache. there are kids who got into mcr during the break up and this is going to be THEIR gerard....i need to put my head into a blender.

4. cunt dragula/count fagula

99% perfect recreation of bela lugosi in dracula 1931 HELLO?? (1% imperfect because the tailcoat is cut weirdly high both for a beat-by-beat recreation and 1930s evening wear in general and i cannot stop looking at it) i love this one bc it's just so Fun and the details are so theatre kid-y that i am reduced to self-recognition through the other. tinted hair gel. white foundation. drawn-on eyebrows. the way the cape swishes. we love to have fun here this one looked so fun to wear. even though i am not a big fan of dracula 1931 i am Not Immune to dracula 1931. glad there was a gud evening 9 years in the making :)

5. pool boy at the vampire mansion

fully-fledged character in 6 words. pool boy at the vampire mansion is like a mother to me. this falls into the category of outfits that i have deemed in my Big Spreadsheet of Tour Outfits (i am extremely mentally healthy thank you for asking) 'camp counsellor fits'. looks EXTREMELY comfy and even though it's so simple, everything works together so well even the clear face mask which i always forget exists. i love you tiniest shorts on planet earth. i love you crooked hand-lettered t-shirt handmade with love. i love you black converse. i would say more about this but the thing about living with your parents at 25 is that if my mother comes upstairs to drag me to the dinner table she will see me being extremely abnormal about gerard way online.

bonus points to: nurse (made me reread hanif abdurraqib's extremely wonderful black parade essay also gave me insane emotions re: my own concepts of health and chronic pain lol), lil ghostie (my close personal friend :^)), fruit bat drag queen (newark 1, would have been #4 if not for dracula)

weird question but do u by any chance have a link to that post where someone (it mightve been you 😭??) was theorizing that jeffree star leaked pete’s nudes and they were lowkey making points from what i remember but like im not 100% sure that i didnt make this up and convince myself it was real 🗿🗿

i never saw that post !! its an interesting theory though

i have never bought the hacking story. i could be wrong but i feel like it just wasnt something that happened before icloud. pete did have a pretty fancy celebrity phone but the photos were years old and phones did not have much memory back then either.

i have always felt that the origin point had to have been a girl (or guy) pete sent them to— and he was involved with a lot of people, so not necessarily a specific girlfriend. the pictures were a few years old and there was a lot going on in his personal life at the time, he had already been famous for ages, which makes me think someone was set off. whoever it was may not have even intended them to be posted online but showed one friend who sent it to friends who sent it to friends.

i genuinely believe chris didnt do it, but chris has always been tight with the hoes so its vaguely possible he directly or indirectly encouraged whoever did. there are so many photos from pre-fob in various stages of nudity involving hazing, teabagging, panty raids, etc theres probably some of pete that he hasnt posted or auctioned off. iirc think hes actually said this as well. for example, i think hes said there were at least 11 photos from the arma panty raid, hes only posted 3, and the photos he described being taken in the journal entry have not been posted, which makes me think pete must be in them and they must be compromising.

if i remember correctly, perez hilton also accused chris of doing it and it was around the time chris got his first book deal. around this time, there was an urban dictionary entry created for “hey chris” by someone named “petur” that doesnt mention the book deal or the nudes, but accuses him of outing mikey way of mcr. which is odd, as it seems like no one has ever taken the chris/mikey thing seriously and he was more well known for the other stuff. this was the only entry created by this user, which makes me think it was pete as thats on brand for him and thus, imo, adds evidence it wasnt chris.

HOWEVER….

patrick posted on his personal blog in 2011 or 2012 that was some fans who “hacked his phone memory.” the band had been on hiatus for quite some time at that point and patrick is a fundamentally honest person so i dont think he had a reason to lie.

i tracked down what i believe was the original livejournal post they were leaked in and that post claimed some people had been passing them around via email and someone who got them via email uploaded them online. this couldve been what patrick was referring to by “fans.”

i dont think a group of deranged fangirls hacking his entire phone memory via the internet and only leaking years old nudes, which is the story, would be able to keep it quiet for this long. i genuinely feel like someone wouldve blown it by now or there would at least be rumors of other stuff on the phone. however, someone who knew pete personally and was set off by petes behavior showing a friend and then it getting out of control would explain a lot of the mystery.

you see yourself as a monster. - You have a lot of issues with humanity, and how you fit into it. You've been ostracized because of things you can't help from a young age, so you internalized that there must be something different and inherently wrong about you. You don't see yourself as a person worthy of respect, because you figure there has to be a reason everyone treated you like that, and it makes the most sense that you're the problem. You are not a monster. Even if you don't fully connect and identify with humanity, you are still deserving of as much compassion and respect as everyone else. You don't have to earn it. Try to accept kindness, it's not always a trap.

Iceage - Beyondless by Will

Hello, my name is Will Stubbs and I love music. I feel that music is the best medium for creativity. People can explore new ideas and emotions with the help of music. I am here to talk about music that interests me and maybe start a great conversation. Thanks for reading and remember to love music forever.

Iceage is a punk band from denmark who I honestly haven’t listened to before. I knew that I wanted to review a completely new band to me step out of my comfort zone. I generally have listened to every band I review extensively so I always have defined and strong opinions. This review is new territory for me, but I am looking forward to the challenge.

What I love about bands like this is that they push genres enough to be interesting but are not too obscure that can be accepted by large. This band isn’t too complicated and grandiose. I think that this album will be welcoming to posterity. The blending of post punk, art punk, and jazz fusion seems so seamless you don’t notice. At first listen I thought I was getting the lackadaisical and catchy garage rock of a band like The Strokes, but I was deceiving myself.

The first song “Hurrah” came in blaring like a scene from mad max. The sound is full and loud. The speedy guitar, the punchy drums, and the badass nonchalant don’t give a shit attitude was very apparent. The message isn’t new, nor the delivery, but its effective and strong. What a great start to a record. The self destructive and violent content of the lyrics work well with everything else.

What is interesting is that the next song “Pain Killer” is still a punk song, but more of a post punk song. The drums are groovier, and its much subtler. Even with that going on, the song doesn’t really lose any energy and fits well. Sky Ferreira really adds so much to the song. Her voice acts like a vice gripping at your lungs. The horns and tambourine add so many little melodies and details. Its catchy and fun music

The next track, “Under the sun”, again is different from the last but not diametrically opposed. This is one of my favorite tracks of the year so far. Yet again this song is very self destructive in nature. Its stoic post punk is hypnotizing and intense. The outer body experience of this track intensifies until it bursts into a subtle satisfying meltdown. The bare guitar and the intense drums make me feel like I am apart of the experience. The vocalist is almost singing like drunken spoken word poetry and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The euphoric lyrics are evocative of the response I get from the music. What a fantastic track.

“The day the music dies” is another catchy track. While this song strikes as more of an art rock track, has a nice brass section and subtle keyboard. The singer is anxious and desperate for satisfaction. I think that the lyrics on this track are some of my favorite on this record. Look at the pre-chorus “The future's never starting

The present never ends

I left us both bombarded

But I'm not here to make amends”

The angsty passion and the seemingly disorganized track seems to be amplified by the content.

The next song “Plead the fifth” sounds almost like a Velvet underground song in spirit. The deep bass line, the slapping tambourine, and the reserved drums and guitar make it so smooth. The song reminds me of a hangover. All the other songs are so full of energy and breadth that we need a soft gentle bass line to lull us back into sobriety.

“Catch it” is another track that I want to talk about. The slow, slugging, and hellish. Its like a tom waits songs in that its dense and unapologetic. The chorus is extremely catchy and plentiful in this song. I love the sharp tambourine throughout to keep the tempo go smoother. The lyrics resemble a drug addiction and the end of the track the band goes berserk like a bad trip or maybe an overdose into unsettling feedback scraping your ears. Its intense and full of energy.

The next song “Thieves like us” is hilarious, in a sadistic way. Its so gleefully fun. The singer sounds as if he is binging on liquor, and the lyrics talk about kidnapping a stranger to have them listen to your twisted wayward stories. I think that reading the lyrics separately gives you the worst most deranged perspective, but with the music its nothing but terrifying fun. The way the twangy guitar picking slowly as the the tempo picks up to keep the light-hearted sounds contrast the dark hearted nature is hilarious.

“Take it all” is very much an art rock song. The string section reminds me of a Radiohead song back in the OK Computer era, and the way he sings is much more serious. This song is much more grandiose than the others. The climactic nature makes the pace of the album make much more sense than it already did. I wouldn’t consider this album singular and narrative, but the way the songs flow from one to another could tell you otherwise.

The next track “Showtime” is very cabaret and theatrical as the name would imply. I know I said that the last track was linear, but this track follows suit to an even further degree. I love the way that it starts as a post punk song. It feels like a noir murder mystery, but then the paradigm switches very drastically. Then it’s a cabaret showpiece that wouldn’t sound too foreign of an MCR song, but much more artistically. The singer is overwhelmingly sarcastic in this. I think he feels that he is a spectacle to be seen, as opposed to a serious artist so he gives them what they want in a sense. Like he feels cheap and tasteless with no identity. I know I keep saying it, but I love this track as well.

The downward spiral has finally hit its course in the last song “Beyondless”. The singing is the most serious in this, and the tone is more somber and dark. Its depressing and dark to say the least. I think that the singer is saying that he is not repairable and that he will always what he appears. The way he sings is like losing a loved one because you had to let them go. The strings are sharper, and the metronome sound is frustrating, but the impact will stay there. This one was a great way to end this rollercoaster of sounds and emotions. While not my favorite track, it fit well and was necessary.

Overall, I was so impressed by this record. The drama and lack thereof were compelling to a vaguely narrative standpoint. The recording was great as usual. The lyrics were angsty, sarcastic, and depressing. The instruments were detail, immense and played well. This album is layered, catchy, fun, and truly and genuinely enjoyable. I am glad that bands like this exist because it is hard to find a rock band that is fun, but also makes great music. Since hip hop has been switching the cultural zeitgeist so we don’t see as many rock bands any more. Bands like the white stripes, the strokes, bloc party, and etcetera putting out consistently good music, or music at all. Im glad that these guys are keeping the spirit alive.

I know I like to give high scores because I generally review albums I really like, but I want to. My scale may not be as defined as other music reviewers, but I think about the albums I listen to and I know the score I feel.

Now this album isn’t perfect, but I can’t think of much wrong with it, if anything at all. Now I can’t give it a 10 because I have done that in the past and regretted it with Death Grips – Bottomless Pit. This album is similar in regard in that its as close to perfect as possible in my mind. Now take the rating as you will.
