When Lata Mangeshkar sang,
"चले ही जाना है, नजर चुरा के यूं, फिर थामी थी साजन तुमने मेरी कलाई क्यों"
I felt that. A lot.

Oh and cursed playlist concept. What kind of music does Gabriel put on at the ashram (Pune or Nevada) to decompress from intense group therapy… (from research I’d say overarching - general vibes: happy, maybe danceable; lyrics: English or Hindi probably :P)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
aka the desire to be subtle vs the desire to be funny: FIGHT
A Purely Spiritual Love
A band AU playlist for running away from the world aged nineteen and accidentally falling for your cult leader. Or just for chillin' post dynamic meditation, that's cool too.
Nazia Hassan - Aao Naa
ABBA - Me & I
Asha Bhosle - Dum Maro Dum (pt. 2)
The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star
Asha Bhosle - Koi Shahri Babu (pt. 1)
The Monkees - I'm a Believer
Kishore Kumar - Ye Jawani Hai Diwani
Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime
Lata Mangeshkar & Kishore Kumar - Jai Jai Shiv Shankar
Carly Simon - You're So Vain
Kalyanji-Anandji - Dharmatma Theme (pt. 1 - instrumental)
The Human League - Don't You Want Me
Nazia and Zoheb Hassan - Dosti
Don McLean - American Pie
Lata Mangeshkar - Bangle Ke Peechhe
The Beach Boys - Sloop John B
Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor & Shailendra Singh - Amar Akbar Anthony
The Beatles - All You Need is Love
Usual deal: explanation below the cut. Album cover featuring Joel Kinnaman's chin.
Caveat and apologies that I don't always have a very detailed explanation for why all the Hindi songs are on here because for some I just couldn't find English lyrics/descriptions of the film they're from, they're just here because they're bops. Caveat and apologies that the English songs are really NOT subtle and I had way too much fun picking them.
Nazia Hassan - Aao Naa Not Hindi, but also no great explanation beyond: what a CRACKING album opener!! Jerott's probably got the cassette and has playlist privileges at Nevada.
ABBA - Me & I Frankly ALL of Super Trouper is on the ashram playlist. The Winner Takes It All? GRM approves! But for supreme trolling-through-playlist purposes, get boogie-ing to this disco track about psychoanalysis: Sometimes I have toyed With ideas that I got from good old Dr. Freud Nothing new of course It may seem to you I try to break through open doors Oh no, oh no I just wanna say a lot of that applies to me 'Cause it's an explanation to my split identity 3) Asha Bhosle - Dum Maro Dum (pt. 2) This was an epic hit, from the film Haré Rama Haré Krishna (1971) which involves, ooh, international bigamy, cults, selling off artifacts to rich Westerners, suicide, hippies beating people up, and all sorts of things that people suspicious of Rajneesh's movement would recognise as threats. I think it would tickle Graham Reid Malett to have people dancing to the big song from a film warning about the dangers of his type. 4) The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star Cheesy, a bit sad, a bit sinister even, but everyone can dance along and everyone knows it. 5) Asha Bhosle - Koi Shahri Babu (pt. 1) I'll be honest and say that Bollywood thriller plots are somewhat impenetrable when reduced to short Wikipedia summaries, but this is from Loafer (1973) which seems to be about love across rival gangs and spying on one another. The song is about falling coyly for a guy who gives you a gift. And Asha is the queen, so we put as much Asha on the playlist as we need to. 6) The Monkees - I'm a Believer :))) be happy! Your dynamic meditation has finished and you have taken another step towards enlightenment/entrapment by Graham Reid Malett. 7) Kishore Kumar - Ye Jawani Hai Diwani No explanation, couldn't find the lyrics anywhere BUT what a tune!! Kishore and R.D. Burman, more icons. The film it's from (Jawani Diwani, 1972) has people leaving/becoming estranged from their families for love and intergenerational repeats of that so. A bit of a Jerott vibe. 8) Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime People from well-to-do background suddenly asking themselves 'how did I get here?' and packing it all in to give their money to the ashram…? 9) Lata Mangeshkar & Kishore Kumar - Jai Jai Shiv Shankar Laughter therapy, praising Shiva (god of meditation, among other things, Rajneesh discoursed on him a lot). And from a film (Aap Ki Kasam, 1974) where paranoia and possessiveness ruins relationships. 10) Carly Simon - You're So Vain Do I think I'm funny? Yes. Yes I do. It's about the death of the ego babe, let go of yourself! But genuinely, you could sway along and dance to this when you were exhausted from meditation! And when Carly Simon finally tells us who (else) it was about you mark my words, Graham Reid Malett will be on the list :P You had me several years ago When I was still quite naive Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair And that you would never leave But you gave away the things you loved And one of them was me 11) Kalyanji-Anandji - Dharmatma Theme (pt. 1 - instrumental) The film (Dharmatma, 1975) is apparently based on the Godfather but set in Afghanistan. So absolutely the kind of thing that would appeal to teenage Jerott, who never knew his grandparents who spent time around the (then) India-Afghanistan border. Plus teenage boys love gangster stories. Plus Jerott doesn't realise the similarities between the ashram set up and that of a mob. 12) The Human League - Don't You Want Me A man who feels entitled to another person because he plucked from obscurity and 'made something of them'? Remind you of anyone? I picked you out, I shook you up and turned you around Turned you into someone new Now five years later on you've got the world at your feet Success has been so easy for you But don't forget, it's me who put you where you are now And I can put you back down too I feel like the background story to this song's release is also relevant: the band hated it and thought it was a filler track and didn't want to release it as a single, the record company forced them to, and it was a huge success. Reminiscent of Francis and GRM's interactions in PiF. 13) Nazia and Zoheb Hassan - Dosti Just another of Jerott's cassettes with good Pakistani disco pop on it! :') 14) Don McLean - American Pie It's just….it's such a GRM/Jerott kind of vibe? The disappointment, grief and sense of loss for something you never quite had, the crushing of hope, the nostalgia for something half-remembered as life-changing, but all sounding so beautiful and dreamy and it kind of cheers everyone up to be able to sing along? The idea of the American Dream as an ideal that can never be lived up to as well, kind of like what Jerott is hoping to find from the ashram vs what he gets. Oh, and there we were, all in one place A generation lost in space With no time left to start again So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick Jack Flash sat on a candlestick 'Cause fire is the devil's only friend Oh, and as I watched him on the stage My hands were clenched in fists of rage No angel born in hell Could break that Satan's spell And as the flames climbed high into the night To light the sacrificial rite I saw Satan laughing with delight The day the music died 15) Lata Mangeshkar - Bangle Ke Peechhe Another I couldn't find the lyrics for, but it's R.D. Burman again and was a massive hit. It's from Samadhi (1972). 16) The Beach Boys - Sloop John B Another one that kind of sounds cheery until you listen to the lyrics when it's actually really miserable! Jerott are you ok? The first mate, he got drunk And broke in the captain's trunk The constable had to come and take him away Sheriff John Stone Why don't you leave me alone? Yeah, yeah Well, I feel so broke up I wanna go home 17) Kishore Jumar, Mahendra Kapoor & Shailendra Singh - Amar Akbar Anthony From a 'masala' film of the same title, about three brothers separated and raised as Hindu/Muslim/Christian, so I figure a good ashram vibe for bringing people together in a synthesis of teachings… Also look out Francis. Look out Jerott. <Two are better than one Three are better than two The bride and the groom are not together There's music but not a wedding procession The bride and the groom are not together There's music but not a wedding procession There's nothing to fear This is a night of union and not of sadness Smile my friends, why do you have such a crying face Smile my friends, why do you have such a crying face When the three of us get together in one place> 18) The Beatles - All You Need is Love Can't have a playlist about a rich white guy exploiting an already exploitative Indian cult to make himself powerful without putting some Beatles on it, right? Sure Graham, 'love'. There's nothing you can do that can't be done Nothing you can sing that can't be sung Nothing you can say, but you can learn how to play the game It's easy Nothing you can make that can't be made No one you can save that can't be saved Nothing you can do, but you can learn how to be you in time It's easy

Exploring the Different Emotions Reflected in Bollywood Songs
There’s something about a heartbreak anthem that just gets us. They make us feel seen, understood, and most importantly, not alone. From the eternal classics to more modern hits, Bollywood has always had a way of speaking to our hearts and reflecting the different emotions we experience when going through a break-up.
Whether it’s the pain of unrequited love, the feeling of betrayal, or simply the sadness that comes with saying goodbye, there’s a Bollywood song for every type of heartbreak. And while they might not always offer up the best advice on how to deal with a break-up, they definitely give us comfort in knowing that we’re not alone in our feelings.
So, next time you’re feeling down about a break-up, put on one of these songs and let yourself feel all the feels. Trust us, it’ll make you feel better.
Analyzing the Lyrics of Popular Heartbreak Anthems
When it comes to heartbreak anthems, there are few things more cathartic than belting out a tune with all your might. Whether you’re wallowing in your sorrows or trying to move on, these songs always seem to hit the spot. But what is it about these popular tunes that make them so relatable?
Let’s take a look at the lyrics of some of Bollywood’s most popular heartbreak anthems and see what we can learn about the emotions involved in a break-up.
“Tum Hi Ho” by Arijit Singh
This song is all about the pain of losing someone you love. The lyrics talk about how the singer is struggling to get through each day without their loved one by their side. There is a sense of desperation and hopelessness in the singer’s voice as they try to hold on to any memories they have of their time together.
“Tum Hi Ho” Translation: Only You Are There, In My Heart I am trying, every day, without you living each moment, for you (only for you) my heart beats.. only for you.. my life is only for you..
“Tum Hi Ho” Lyrics Meaning: The lyrics of this song are quite self-explanatory. The singer is pining for their lost love and trying to find ways to cope with their absence. The chorus talks about how the singer would be nothing
Examining How Music Influences Our Emotional Health
In India, film music is an integral part of the movie-watching experience. The songs often play a pivotal role in furthering the plot and driving the emotions of the characters on screen. And while we may not always be conscious of it, the music in these films often has a profound impact on our own emotions as well.
For many of us, Bollywood heartbreak anthems have become the soundtrack to our own personal breakups and heartaches. These songs perfectly capture the pain and anguish of a broken heart, and they can often help us to process and deal with our own emotions
Interestingly, research has shown that listening to sad music can actually be beneficial for our emotional health. Studies have found that listening to sad music can lead to increased feelings of empathy and compassion, as well as decreased levels of anxiety and depression.
So next time you’re feeling down about a break-up or any other sadness in your life, don’t be afraid to crank up those Bollywood heartbreak anthems. They just might be exactly what you need to help you feel better.
Cultural Impact of Bollywood Heartbreak Anthems
The cultural impact of Bollywood heartbreak anthems is profound. For generations, these songs have been a source of comfort for those going through a tough break-up. They capture the pain and longing that comes with lost love, and offer a cathartic release for listeners.
These songs have also had a significant influence on Indian popular culture. They are often referenced in films and TV shows, and have become part of the country’s collective consciousness. Even those who don’t speak Hindi can sing along to these classics.
So why do we keep coming back to these songs when our hearts are broken? Perhaps it’s because they offer a sense of solidarity – we’re not alone in our pain. Or maybe it’s because they’re just so darn catchy! Whatever the reason, there’s no denying the power of a good Bollywood heartbreak anthem.
Understanding the Role of Music in Healing a Broken Heart
It is said that music has the power to heal a broken heart. And while this may be true for some, it is not always the case. There are many factors that contribute to the healing process, and music is just one of them. While it can be a helpful tool, it is not always the panacea that people make it out to be.
There are many different types of music, and each one can have a different effect on the listener. Some music is uplifting and empowering, while others are sad and melancholic. The type of music that you choose to listen to after a break-up should be based on your own personal preference and what makes you feel better.
For some people, listening to sad songs after a break-up can actually make them feel worse. If this is the case for you, then it’s best to avoid these types of songs altogether. Instead, focus on finding music that makes you feel good and helps you to remember the happy times in your relationship.
There is no right or wrong way to heal a broken heart. Everyone copes with break-ups differently, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what works best for you. If listening to music helps you to cope with your break-up, then go ahead and do it. But if it doesn’t, don’t force yourself to listen to it. Instead, focus on finding other ways to heal and move forward with your life.
The Top 10 Heartbroken Bollywood Songs That Tug at Your Emotions”
“Tadap Tadap Ke” – Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) “Channa Mereya” – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) “Kabira” – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) “Tum Hi Ho” – Aashiqui 2 (2013) “Dil De Diya Hai” – Masti (2004) “Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahungi” – Half Girlfriend (2017) “Tum Bin Jiya Jaye Kaise” – Tumbin(2001) “Baaton Ko Teri” – All Is Well (2015) “Dard Dilo Ke Kam Ho Jate” – The Xpose (2014)
These songs beautifully portray the pain, longing, and vulnerability experienced in matters of the heart, making them unforgettable heartbreak anthems in Bollywood.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Bollywood music has a special power to evoke all kinds of emotions with its heartbreak anthems. From joyous dance numbers to melancholic ballads, these songs have the ability to bring us back in time and remind us of our own experiences with love lost and lessons learned. While every song carries a unique message, they all share one thing in common—they help us come to terms with the pain that comes from breaking up or being hurt by someone we care about. So next time you feel down and out after a messy break-up, don’t forget there’s always some beautiful Bollywood tunes waiting for you!

I've wanted to see this movie for a while - especially recently, as a combination of rediscovering the absolutely amazing "Jhilmil Sitaron Ka" and of learning that it is, at least in some aspects, a Bollywood version of The Count of Monte Cristo (one of my all-time favorite books). And while it isn't Monte Cristo - in typical 70s Bollywood style, there is an attempt at a comedy track (at least, a couple of scenes) that probably could've been done without, and there is a happy ending for protagonist and the girl (after some misunderstanding-induced near-drama), a lot of talk about honor over money (which, maybe has a point, but they really beat you over the head with this; luckily, the story is great so you don't get annoyed by this too much), and an ending that goes maybe a bit heavy on the action (because, of course, the bad guys have to find out who he is and bring in kidnapping and a subsequent action sequence) - it's still a lot of fun.
Adore this movie. <3
The basic premise remains, for the most part, true to Monte Cristo - a jealous co-worker ends up getting our protagonist framed and sent off to jail for a while. And when he's freed (as the movie begins), he realizes that his mother is dead and his girlfriend is missing. But he happens upon a friend who tells him who framed him and, after some chance encounter with a rich man who listens to his story (including a lengthy flashback in while our hero tells his story, which is fine, including random scenes that he had no way of knowing because he wasn't there, which is annoying but very typical of flashbacks and exactly why they're stupid), the rich man agrees to help him and pretty much gives him free reign over his money. And so, he sets out for revenge.
There's obviously some lack of communication with Rakhee (her first role!), causing him to, for a brief spell, set out for revenge against her as well - but sanity prevails, and then the truth comes out (her truth; he remains hidden). Can't blame her - some random guy shows up and is like "tell me about why you're a widow and what happened to your husband," and yeah, no blame for not wanting to talk. He probably shouldn't have over-reacted. Not telling her, once he knew the truth, though - that's probably harsh. And not telling his friend the entire time, also probably harsh. Like, I get it initially - but after you know your disguise has worked, why still keep it hidden (other than one attempt at a comedy scene midway through the movie, which isn't really all that funny).
I absolutely love Jhilmil Sitaron Ka - both versions! - and upon watching the movie, I think I'm more in love with second, sadder version that Rakhee's character sings (well, mouths; Lata Mangeshkar, obviously, sings it) right before the beginning of the 3rd act. I mean, the happier version is great too - and Lata and Mohammed Rafi are obviously excellent - but I don't know. The sadder version (though, not overly sad) is just more. Also, I may have teared up, because you sort of really feel her pain at that point (because, you know - even if our hero doesn't - that her dead husband is actually him), and that line
Dukh ke toofanon se bhi main na ghabraungi
is absolutely haunting. The music/songs/lyrics back then, man. Love.
Between this and Johny Mera Naam and, slightly lesser, The Train and Kab? Kyoon? Aur Kahan?, 1970 was a splendid year for these sort of crime thriller/suspense movies in Bollywood.

Anarkali pakistani song
Tumblr media
#Anarkali pakistani song movie
It’s one of those mind-numbing songs that makes me sad when I remember some people live their whole pathetic lives without ever hearing this angel’s voice. Let me be clear: no matter how you slice it, the biggest star of this piece is Lata Mangeshkar whose vocals could overpower any Mughal army–from her gorgeous opening alaap to the haunting final farewell. You cannot stop watching her even as the last brick is placed in front of her face (Geeta Bali from that era possesses a similar enchanting appeal). I remain awestruck by Bina Rai’s performance–she possess that elusive je ne sais quoi, which eclipses beauty or theatrics to make her unquestionably a star. Every shot is infused with languid glamour matched by the actress’ complete command of the screen. The cinematography, particularly of the first iteration, is stunning: dream-like extreme close-ups of Bina Rai lend a lyrical quality to the Salim-Anarkali courtship.
#Anarkali pakistani song movie
A romantic version starts the movie on a high note (literally) while an ominous version carries the film’s climax as the heroine is entombed alive. In Filmistan’s magnificent 1953 version, the song “Yeh Zindagi Usiki Hai” both opens and ends the film. Pradeep Kumar and Bina Rai star as Prince Salim and his songstress lover in Anarkali (1953). Asif picked up steam on his “period” project, toyed with casting Nutan before honing in on Madhubala, and eventually released his magnum opus Mughal-e-Azam (1961). Almost a decade after Bina Rai’s 1953 version became a blockbuster, K. Asif too announced he would remake the film with Nargis as the lead, but unfortunately, the film was put on hold with the partition of India when his producer Shiraz Ali Hakim moved to Pakistan. A silent film in 1928 and then a talkie in 1935 starred Sulochana in the title role (who incidentally also plays Queen Jodha in the 1953 version). The doomed tale of 16th century Mughal Prince Salim and fabled courtesan Anarkali has been a favorite of the Bollywood film industry dating back to the pre-talkie days. “Yeh Zindagi Usiki Hai” is a true Bollywood legend, one of Lata Mangeshkar’s most iconic numbers picturised upon a nail-biting thriller of historical mythology. Today we present the lyrics and English translation to “ Yeh Zindagi Usiki Hai” from Anarkali (1953). Bina Rai’s enchanting smile commands the screen in Anarkali (1953).

From the gramophone and transistor to cassettes, CDs, MP3 players, and iPods, the mediums through which music could be accessed have evolved rapidly. Saregama moved away from the norm to offer a portable audio player that packed a mighty punch with its product, Carvaan. A music player that won the Innovation of the Year award and continues to make waves, this retro digital audio player is perfect for every household and every individual who loves music.
Saregama Carvaan, in essence, is a portable music player that comes preloaded with over 5,000 music tracks, including retro classics by legends such as Lata Mangeshkar, RD Burman, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Mohd Rafi, Jagjit Singh, and Mukesh. Sorted and classified neatly into categories like artists, genres, and moods (Happy, Sad, Romantic, Sufi, etc.), the user can listen to their preferred music anytime, anywhere.
The Carvaan player also includes Ameen Sayani’s timeless ‘Geetmala Ki Chhaon Mein’ collection in 50 volumes, as his silken voice takes you on a journey of Hindi film music from 1952 to 2000. Sayani shares interesting tidbits of his experience at Asia’s oldest radio station – Radio Ceylon. Carvaan also provides you with an option to listen to FM radio, connect your Bluetooth or plug in your own USB device, and enjoy any other kind of music you like.

How to connect Bluetooth With Carvaan?

How to add songs? It is not possible to add songs within the Carvaan’s built-in memory. However, the music player gives you a handy option with its USB feature. To listen to your favourite songs that are not already a part of Carvaan’s preloaded bank of music, you can copy your tracks on a USB device (pen drive) and simply connect it and play. Alternatively, you can play the songs saved on your phone or memory card by connecting the Bluetooth to Carvaan and using the music player as a high-quality speaker.
How to use Saregama Carvaan?
For first-time users, it is important to first charge the music player to ensure that the battery is full before you start using it. On average, a fully-charged Carvaan battery can provide up to 5 hours of operation.
Plug in the adaptor into a power socket
Insert the other end of the cable into the micro-USB port at the back
Turn the switch on to start charging the device
The light next to the power button will light up
Once this light goes off (automatically), it means your Carvaan is fully charged
You can now access the preloaded songs on the player
Alternatively, you can tune into FM stations, plug in your USB device or connect Bluetooth to play music
Depending on what mode you want to use, you can press the respective buttons and get started in a jiffy! You can also use the remote (available with select variants only) or the big dial provided on the front panel to scroll through folders, change radio stations or FM channels and switch between artistes/moods/Geetmala options.
