“Antisemitic writings” were found in a search of items belonging to the shooter who opened fire Sunday afternoon at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, according to law enforcement.
The woman, identified as 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno, was carrying an assault-style rifle with the word “Palestine” written on it, according to two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter.
A motive is still not clear, but police said they believe Moreno acted alone. A dispute between Moreno and her ex-husband’s family, some of whom are Jewish, may be related to the shooting, Houston Police Commander Chris Hassig said in a news briefing Monday.
The shooter also made several statements during the course of the incident, but the officials declined to describe them. Law enforcement officials added that Moreno previously went by multiple aliases, including using both male and female names.
Moreno also brought her 7-year-old son with her to the church, the officials said. During the incident, the shooter stated she had a bomb, but a search turned up no explosive devices, officials said.
Preliminary tests done of chemicals found at the scene concluded that the materials did not pose any risk, Houston Fire Department Chief Sam Peña said at the Monday news briefing.
“The products on their own are benign, and they’re common products that we would see in other applications,” Peña said.
Law enforcement records show the shooter had at least six arrests since 2005, including unlawful carrying of a weapon, which she pleaded guilty to; evading arrest; and assault on a public official, which was pleaded to a lesser charge.
Moreno has a documented mental health history and was placed under an emergency detention order by Houston police in 2016, Hassig said.
Maria Scott, who lived four doors from Moreno in the city of Conroe, roughly 40 miles north of Houston, said she did not know her well, but “people talked about her because she was wreaking havoc.”
She said a couple of years ago Moreno knocked on her door at 7 a.m. “insisting I go get my dogs out of her mother’s yard,” said Scott, 57. “She was just very stern and very, very angry for someone at 7 a.m.”
Scott said she heard from talk in the neighborhood that Moreno carried a firearm.
Another neighbor, Linda Giutta, wrote on Facebook that she and others from the neighborhood had raised concerns about Moreno with local law enforcement and the city council.
"No one could offer any kind of help," Giutta said in the post. "We are told to see something and say something but nothing gets done until it is too late."
Neither the police department nor Conroe's five council members immediately responded to requests for comment.
Police have publicly stated that two off-duty officers at the church returned fire, striking the shooter and killing her at about 1:50 p.m. Her son was also struck in the head during the incident and was in critical condition.
Police Chief Troy Finner said at a news conference Monday that the 7-year-old boy is “fighting for his life.” Police previously said the boy was 5 years old.
Another person who was injured, a 57-year-old man, was released from the hospital, Finner added.
He added that one of the off-duty officers is an agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and the other is a Houston police officer.
Officials are investigating a wide range of possible motives given the writing on the weapon, but cannot yet conclusively say what led to the shooting. They have not ruled out terrorism or hate crime-related motives.
The shooting happened between services, as people were arriving for Spanish service, Osteen said. About 45,000 people attend services there every week, making it one of the largest megachurches in the country.
Osteen said that he was “in a fog” after the violence and that he was keeping the injured in his prayers.
“We don’t understand why all these things happen,” the pastor told reporters Sunday. “But we know God’s in control.”
In a subsequent statement on Facebook, Osteen urged his congregation to lean on their faith to cope with the anguish.
“Our community is devastated by today’s events and grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement,” he said. “Together, we will rise above this tragedy and stand firm in our commitment to love and support one another.”

"The only thing that keeps me from exceeding the guideline with a higher minimum sentence is that I am worried that it could be the basis for an appeal." --Judge
Chad David Curtis, Michigan inmate 886901, born 1968, incarceration intake in October 2013 at age 44, released September 2022
Criminal Sexual Conduct
At a hearing on October 3, 2013, former major league baseball player Chad Curtis listened to victim statements before being sentenced to prison.
Afterwards, as Chad Curtis delivered what a prosecutor called an arrogant, self-serving hour-long soliloquy, the three teen victims of his sexual crimes could take no more and walked out of the courtroom.
However, the victims returned in time to hear Barry County Circuit Court Judge Amy McDowell sentence the former major leaguer and school athletic mentor to seven to 15 years in prison for his sexual assault of three girls at Lakewood High School.
For his part, Curtis talked for an hour and accused all the victims of lying during the week-long trial in August, during which Curtis was found guilty of six counts of criminal sexual conduct.
Curtis talked of how he was playing for the Detroit Tigers, one of six teams he would play for in a 10-year career ending 2001, when he decided he wanted to become a servant of God.
Curtis talked at length about all the students he helped by getting his teaching certificate at Cornerstone University. He talked about the people he brought to Christ through his example and the lives he helped turn around even as he waited sentencing in the Barry County Jail.
Barry County Prosecutor Julie Nakfoor Pratt said Curtis’ statement showed an utter lack of remorse and showed that he needed to be put in prison.
“That was the most selfish, self-serving, victim-blaming statement I’ve heard in my career as a prosecutor,” Pratt said. “It speaks volumes about his character, or lack thereof.”
After hearing Curtis’ statement, McDowell sentenced him at the very top of the state sentencing guidelines. The judge said the only thing that kept her from exceeding the guideline with a higher minimum sentence was she was worried that it could be the basis for an appeal.
Following the sentence hearing, defense attorney David Dodge gathered with supporters of his client, including Curtis’ wife and daughter, as they met in a circle and prayed in the courthouse parking lot.

Meet my OC: Jessica Phillips
Tumblr media
I'd like to introduce you to Jessica Phillips. I've introduced her in a couple fanfics and edits in the past, but I am putting the finishing touches on some WIPs and wanted to flesh her character out a bit.
Book: Open Heart. (Prequel - when Casey is in Med School)
LI: Casey MacTavish (OH F!MC)
Face Claim: Madelaine Petsch
Age: 23 (meets Casey)/24 (starts dating)/33 (2023)
Hometown: Lakewood, Colorado
Family: James and Rebecca Phillips. Her father is a pastor and a bank manager, and her mother is a part-time librarian. She is the youngest of three. Her sister, Bethany, is six years older, and her brother, Troy, is two years older.
College: Temple University, Philadelphia, PA BS - Biology
Med School: UPenn - Perelman School of Medicine
Occupation: Pediatric Cardiologist
General Information: Jessica grew up in a happy but conservative family. She knew she was a lesbian from the time she was in middle school, but never let anyone know because she felt she would be disowned. When the time came to go to college, she only applied to schools in liberal areas where she knew she'd be able to live openly.
She had one serious relationship before Casey. Her name was Ammarah Ryan, and she was a fellow student at Temple University. Ammarah and Jessica applied to many grad schools, but the plan was to remain in Philadelphia if they could. They were both accepted to UPenn, and Jess assumed they were both going there. But Ammarah had been accepted to Oxford, and he told Jess of her plans to attend there just a month before graduation.
She returned to her home state of Colorado for her residency but was not happy. She became an attending in Seattle and eventually in New York City.
Jessica only came out to her family when she was an attending, and they were not accepting. When Jessica married her wife, Audrey Livingston, a pediatric oncologist, her parents would not attend, but her siblings were supportive. Casey had remained friends with Jessica, and she attended her wedding along with her parents, who always treated Jessica like she was their own.
Jessica and Audrey did not have children of their own, choosing to focus on their careers and each other, but they had several furbabies.
For more information about Casey & Jessica's relationship during med school, see here.

during the gap between season one and season two, emma, whilst out of town, was placed on an emergency psychiatric hold following heightened paranoia that led to psychosis. following the 72 hours, that hold was extended for a further 14 days, with emma then voluntarily staying for 3 additional weeks. of the six months emma left lakewood, she was hospitalised for 38 days before being admitted to a wellness centre to continue to monitor her mental state. even when the period of psychosis ended, she still experienced heightened suicidality and recommenced on antidepressants [she was previously prescribed them throughout her early teenage years], alongside antipsychotic medication

CHAPTER 02 ;;  _________ ׂׂૢ་༘࿐
----------------------------------------------------------------------
???: Woah. Calm down. I'm not going to hurt you.
Your breathing starts increasing more and more. The tall figure smirks at you while striding closer and closer till you hit the wall behind you.
The boy giggles at the fear in your eyes. Your vision is now in full view. The boy had dark hair and all-rounded dark eyes. You turn your head to look in another direction to avoid eye contact. Closing your eyes. Someone, please. Help me.
???: Stay away from her, Soobin.
Your dread goes away altogether at once. That voice. I know that voice. Hesitating, you open your eyes to turn back to the boy now covering you. Heeseung? Heeseung stares down at the other boy in front of him. Soobin?
SB: Stay out of this, Heeseung.
HS: Can you not see?! You're scaring her. Back off.
Heeseung gives Soobin an arm push of anger, giving the boy a death glare too. You are lost in words, not interrupting the conflict itself.
You still protect yourself behind Heeseungs back, gently holding it for balance, still breathing laboriously.
Heeseung put his arm behind him, reassuring you that you were safe as long as he was there. You watch as the seriousness in his eyes look terrifying. He doesn't seem to be fond of Soobin.
SB: Hah. Typical.
Soobin laughs and moves back a little. He gives you one last striking glare, locking eye contact with you. His glare gave goosebumps all over your body. Both of you keeping eyes locked; the warm sensation on your neck started again. Why do I keep feeling this? Your head starts aching. But this time, it feels worse than when you came into this room
Holding your head, you whine at the pounding of it. You hear footsteps walk further away in the distance before the door aggressively shut. You move your head down in hopes of the pain stopping.
HS: Hey, are you okay?
Heeseung, now facing you, puts an arm on your shoulder. He made sure you were okay and not phased by the incident which had occurred.
His voice sounded like an echo ringing through your ears, dubbed by the sound; of ringing shifting from one side to another of your head. You still groan at the pain.
HS: Y/n! Are you okay?
You eventually gain the strength to look up at Heeseung. You squint your eyes, seeing Heeseung starts looking distorted to you.
You: I'm okay...
You still grunt at the sharp pain in your head, wavering as you try to look for consonance.
HS: You don't look okay, Y/n.
Heeseung holds you by the arms hoping you don't injure yourself by falling. You can hear Heeseungs voice repeatedly asking questions.
Your whole body was still in a dazed. The music in the room from when you entered now cuts off. As your entire mind now goes-
Blank.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
???: Is she awake?
The sound of whispers makes its way to your ear. Flickering your eyes to open, you flutter at the bright chandelier on top of you. Moving your hand in front of your eyes, blocking the lights, you slowly start waking up. Where am I?
???: Guys, she's awake!
Voices are now clear, and your head feels slightly better. You rise a bit from your sitting position. Adjusting yourself, you look around the room you were in, only to see six boys staring right at you. Jumping a bit-
You: Woah! Who are all of you?
It goes silent for a few seconds-
???: She's cute.
The comment made the other boys laugh. Don't smile. Don't smile Y/n. You smiled at the comment yourself but eventually stopped, knowing you'd never seen any of these boys before.
HS: Give her some space. She doesn't even know some of you guys yet.
Heeseung. I swear he appears everywhere I am. Everyone in the room turns to the voice of the older boy. He had a glass of water in his hand, walking to where you're sitting, surrounded by the six others. He smiles at you before sitting down next to you.
HS: Well...
He says, to the other boys, making them spin around to find other seats in the room. The sudden action makes you giggle. Heeseung notices you laughing, smiling to himself; he offers the glass of water.
HS: Here, have some. You might be thirsty.
You smile, accepting it. As you take a sip, the feeling of endless stares makes you pause. Glancing up to the other boys, only to see them all staring at you.
HS: Guys.
The boys quickly stopped staring and continued doing what they were busy with. Is there something on my face? Why do they keep staring? You take one last sip before handing it to Heeseung as he places it on the counter next to him. You take one more look around the room again. It's pleasingly darkened. It had two floors. The top had bookshelves. Same for the bottom one, but it held tons of sitting areas. Mhm. A library.
HS: Feeling any sounder?
You turn your gaze to Heeseung, slowly nodding with a smile. He returns a smile to you.
You: Thank you.
Heeseung beams at you and gets up from the divan you both were seated on. You stay sat as you watch every action taken.
HS: I suppose you already met the boys. They've been waiting to meet you.
Waiting? To meet me?
You look to the boys on the other side of the room. They have shifted all their engagement to you. Heeseung calls out to them to come to sit closer. They all take sits near you and opposite you. You are all in one big circle at this point. What family reunion is this?
HS: I'll introduce you to them.
Heeseung soon begins introducing you to the boys one by one. Each one of them tells stories about themselves and each other. Some of them even try flirtatious motions on you. You chuckle at the antics thrown at one another and even the sarcastic tones made. You were all getting onward well, even losing track of time.
SN: Y/n. You and I are going to be the best of friends!
The cute boy says, vaulting in his seat while smiling at you. Laughing to yourself, you give the boy a promising nod.
SN: She said Yes!
JK: Relax, Sunoo. You just met her.
Jake gently pulls Sunoo back onto his seat. Sunoo still beaming at you. The boys appeared overly interested in you. They made you feel comfortable with them.
JY: Y/n, you must be exhausted.
JW: She must be. She hasn't even had time to settle in yet.
You quickly turn to the clock on the wall to read the time. IT'S ALMOST MIDNIGHT! You quickly jump out of your seat, standing upright immediately. The rest of the boys follow your movements with their eyes.
NK: Do you have to go?
You: Yeah. It's been a long day for me.
JY: Must have been.
SH: Heeseung can walk you back to your dorm room. You know, Just to be safe.
Sunghoon stirs to Heeseung.
SH: Right? Heeseung.
Heeseung rays at Sunghoon before standing up.
HS: Come on. Let's start walking before we get caught by school guards at this hour.
So... this school does have a curfew... Noted.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Slamming the door behind you, you let out a sigh, putting your belongings next to the door and taking off your now-soaked shoes. While on the way back to the dorm, it started to pour with rain. I hope Heeseung makes it back to his dorm safely. You turn around to rest your head on the door. Such a long day. You close your eyes for exhaustion-
WY: Y/N!
The loud voice makes you jump from surprise.
WY: Where have you been?
Wonyoung is pacing toward you. Her face showed genuine concern.
WY: I was worried sick.
She rests her hand on your shoulders. She looks even more tense now when she feels your drenched clothes.
WY: Y/n, you are freezing! Are you okay?
You blink your eyes, giving a reassuring nod. Wonyoung looks sad with her big sparkly eyes. You now rest your arms on her shoulders.
You: Don't worry, I'm okay. It just started pouring on my way here. I wasn't alone. Lee Heeseung walked me back here.
Wonyoungs sad face quickly fades away as she hears the name Lee Heeseung. Her eyes are open wide as she grabs hold of your two hands.
WY: Lee Heeseung!
You are baffled by her reaction. Did I say something wrong?  Wonyoung grabs your hand as she rushes you to your shared bedroom. She sits you on your bed as she strides around the room. Still confused by her actions, you wonder why she seems nervous.
You: Wonyoung...
As you say her name. she turns to you. She sits next to you.
WY: Lee Heeseung is one of the most popular boys in the academy, Y/n.
You watch as she gets up again, walking in circles in the room.
WY: Shockingly, he walked you home.
You listen to her speak, worrying that you might've done something.
WY: Wait... Did you meet all of them? All seven of them?
Swallowing down your nervousness, you give a little nod.
Wonyoung gasps as she puts her hands around her mouth. She courses next to you once again, still covering her mouth from shock.
You: Is it a bad thing I met them?
Wonyoung shakes her head as she removes her hands from her mouth.
WY: They usually never let any girl speak or befriend any of them.
Still confused, you turn your head to the side, intrigued by the information she's telling you.
You: Now, why me?
WY: That's what I'm trying to figure out! There must be a reason they spoke to you and wanted to know you.
You and Wonyoung look at each other with eyes of curiosity. Why me? There has to be a reason.
Suddenly the warm sensation that's been bothering you since you stepped foot at the academy happened again. This time it felt way more powerful than before. The feeling made coils in your stomach, turning it inside and upside down. You put your hand on your chest to where the warmness is coming from.
WY: Y/n... your neck...
You gape at her as she points to an area around your inlet. Her finger points to the necklace around you. You turn your eye to the silver object around you. Why is it glowing?
The glow kept scintillating with its blinding white strike. The light seemed to have a heartbeat rhythm as it went on. You and Wonyoung were left speechless, not even shifting due to the stupefaction.
WY: Y/n... What is that?
Wonyoung voice of inquisitiveness makes you stop daydreaming. You stood up and walked to the mirror in the shared bedroom, looking at yourself in the reflection.
You: Why is it doing that?
Wonyoung gets up to walk to you. She stands right next to your confused self-
WY: Did you know it could do that...
She said, with an allured voice.
You shake your head, expressing no. Wonyoung leans her body on the countertop behind her, folding her arms together.
WY: That's why they want to be friends with you.
You turn your body to Wonyoung, facing her.
You: What do you mean?
Wonyoung puts her arms on your shoulder as she spins you around to face the mirror again.
You: Did anything strange happen tonight?
You hesitate at the question asked. You begin to remember the incidents from tonight. You probably almost got hurt by some random guy named, Soobin. Heeseung, saving you and bringing you to the magnificent library. Or the fact you met boys that presumably wanted to hurt you.
Do I say this all to Wonyoung? Still wavering, you wonder if you should consult all this with Wonyoung. I don't want to worry her more...
WY: Y/n.
You realize Wonyoung is still waiting patiently for an answer.
You: Why do you say that?
Wonyoung pauses for a bit before turning around.
WY: Your facial expressions are speaking more words than ever right now, Y/n.
Wonyoung says as she lets go of your shoulders and walks to be seated on the bed again.
You gaze in the mirror, eyeing her actions as she moves.
WY: Something is going on. The feeling in my gut is telling it too.
Sighing, having no escape, you give up trying to stifle everything.
You: You have to promise not to tell anyone...
Wonyoung smirks-
WY: I promise.

More ‘forever chemicals’ found in WA drinking water as cleanup costs mount
Dec. 11, 2022 Seattle Times (paywall)
570,000 people, 7.4% of the state’s population, according to a Seattle Times analysis of test results
LAKEWOOD, Pierce County — The water pumped from the ground here was once considered pure enough to mix with a little chlorine and then pipe directly to homes.
Today, every gallon from two water district wells must first be flushed through six enormous tanks, each filled with 40,000 pounds of specially treated coal, to remove contaminants.
This pollution, known as “forever chemicals” or PFAS, can increase health risks for certain cancers and other diseases when present in drinking water in minuscule concentrations measured in parts per trillion. Lakewood is one of more than a dozen Washington public water systems with detections above levels defined by the state to be suitable for long-term consumption — and widespread testing is just ramping up.
a massive legal battle is playing out across the country as more than 200 providers of public drinking water, including Lakewood, sue manufacturers, distributors and in some cases the Defense Department in federal court to determine who will pay the cleanup bills that will tally in the billions of dollars.
In December 1988, 3M chemist Eric Reiner wrote a memo to his colleagues about the corporation’s firefighting foams formulated with PFAS.
For years, the corporation’s marketing pitch portrayed them as “biodegradable.” Reiner termed this a “myth” that was not in 3M’s long-term term interest to perpetuate.
“It is probable that this misconception will eventually be discovered, and when that happens, 3M will likely be embarrassed, and we and our customers may be fined and forced to immediately withdraw products from the market,” Reiner warned.
3M no longer produces the foams that contained PFOA and PFOS. Reiner’s memo is one of many internal 3M documents put into the public record in the avalanche of litigation now consolidated in the U.S. District Court of South Carolina.
3M and other manufacturers initially sought to have many lawsuits dismissed based on case law that has sometimes granted immunity from liability to contractors supplying products requested by the U.S. military.
In a Sept. 16 opinion, U.S. District Court Judge Richard Mark Gergel of South Carolina found 3M and other defendants “knowingly withheld” information detailing the full risks of the product and denied that motion.

Clearing out - Help with identifying what is garbage and what is golden
Just because you have items you no longer want to hang onto does not mean all of it is worthless. Things you might not be able to fix or use can still be of use to other people. The first thing you need to do before you call in a garbage removal company Toms River or where you are, is work out whether you are keeping or getting rid of those things. Here are some questions to ask as you clean and declutter to help you work out what to do with it all.
Does it have any sentimental value?
If it is an item much cherished that has been passed down or something that reminds you of a loved one, or a special time, then that might mean it has enough emotional value to hold onto it. Just consider where you are keeping it if it is something you love that much.
Is it something you have used recently?
One of the things people suggest when you are reorganizing your home is to consider whether it is something you have used in the last six months. If it has been longer than that then consider getting rid of it, either donating it, recycling it or calling in a garbage removal company Lakewood.
Is it valuable enough to hold onto in case you need some cash one day?
Sometimes we own or get left items that are not that sentimental but have some monetary value. You could choose to sell it now or hold onto it for a rainy day.
Are there better models or versions now available?
While it is completely true for technology, it works for other things too. If you have a mixer that is older than 5 years and there is a newer model, or you might even have the newer one already, do you need the older one as well?
Do you have limited space?
Often letting things build up in the home can cause a lot of clutter and make it hard to move around, find things, and use rooms. Call in a garbage removal company Toms River and then you can clear out the spare room and use it as that, or as an office or as something else.
Is it something someone else could use?
You might not want that set of glassware anymore but others might be able to use it. Almost everything you own might be something that someone else can use or recycle. Donate to charity shops, and organizations, post on local sites and so on.
Conclusion
When you know whether something is garbage for the garbage removal company Lakewood or something you can sell or give away, you can start to sort through everything. Start in one room and work your way around. Try to avoid holding onto too many things. Certain items will need special care with removal so keep that in mind. Some appliances, for example, certain liquids and paints also. Anything that cannot be sold or donated check out to ensure it is recycled where possible.

Luke 9:27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. Luke 9:29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Luke 9:30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. Luke 9:31 They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Luke 9:32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. Luke 9:33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) Luke 9:34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. Luke 9:35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” Luke 9:36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen. Luke 9:37 New International Version The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. Luke 9:38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. Luke 9:39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. Luke 9:40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.” Luke 9:41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” Luke 9:42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. Luke 9:43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, Luke 9:44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” Luke 9:45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

Matthew 25:8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ Matthew 25:9 “’No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Luke 19:1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. Luke 19:2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. Luke 19:3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. Luke 19:4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. Luke 19:5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” Luke 19:6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. Luke 19:7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” Luke 19:8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” Luke 19:9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. Luke 19:12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. Luke 19:13 So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’ Luke 19:14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’ Luke 19:15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. Luke 19:16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’ Luke 19:17 “’Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’ Luke 19:18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’ Luke 19:19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’ Luke 19:20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. Luke 19:21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’ Luke 19:22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? Luke 19:23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’ Luke 19:24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’ Luke 19:25 “’Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’ Luke 19:26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away. Luke 19:27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’” Luke 19:28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
Fiesta de la Candelaria/Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or the Feast of the Holy Encounter, is a Christian feast day commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple by Joseph and Mary. It is based upon the account of the presentation of Jesus in Luke 2:22–40. According to the Old Testament rules in Leviticus 12, a woman was to be purified by presenting a lamb as a burnt offering, and either a young pigeon or dove as sin offering, 33 days after a boy's circumcision. The feast falls on 2 February, which is traditionally the 40th day of and the conclusion of the Christmas–Epiphany season.
While it is customary for Christians in some countries to remove their Christmas decorations on Twelfth Night (Epiphany Eve), those in other Christian countries historically remove them after Candlemas/2 February. On Candlemas, many Christians (especially Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and some mainline Protestant denominations including Lutherans, Anglicans and Methodists) also take their candles to their local church, where they are blessed and then used for the rest of the year; for Christians, these blessed candles serve as a symbol of Jesus Christ, who is the Light of the World.

TOOL w/ Elder Live at State Farm Arena
Some days I ask myself, ‘Is this really happening?’. Other days I just pinch myself when things are too good to be true. This is one of those exact moments. Now, I know people make the joke that TOOL is ‘dad rock’ or they are overrated, etc. That opinion or mindset is fine to have, and I have no qualms at all. But for some of us, the ones who care, we live for these moments to see TOOL perform live. I first saw TOOL perform live at Lollapalooza in 1993 at Lakewood Amphitheatre in Atlanta while in high school ({insert old man joke here}. It was a few weeks after my 16th birthday and, a few friends got me a ticket to attend Lollapalooza that year.
I was excited to go hang out with my friends at a one-day music festival (incidentally, this would be the first of many festivals in my future) in Atlanta with such an incredible lineup. Alice in Chains, Primus, Dinosaur Jr., Fishbone, Arrested Development, Babes in Toyland, TOOL, Front 242, and Rage Against the Machine were all mind-blowing in concert as a teenager. Little did I know this day would be a huge turning point in my musical development. Fast forward 31 years later and, I am now on my 22nd Tool show but something makes this one extra special. I can share exactly with you what I saw through my camera lens.
Kicking off the evening’s festivities, Elder is a four-piece doom metal/progressive/stoner rock band that consists of Nick DiSalvo (vocals/guitar), Jack Donovan (bass), Mike Risberg (guitar/keyboards), and Georg Edert (drums). Elder has released six (6) LPs, three (3) singles/EPs, one (1) Live LP, and one (1) collaboration LP (with Kadavar). After seeing Elder passionately performing in smaller clubs over the last few years, I was excited for their chance to perform at much larger arenas. Plus, they have a huge opportunity to gain some new devoted fans by opening for TOOL on this tour. I am very proud of Elder and, hearing the crowd cheer them on during their breath-taking performance filled me with joy. Atlanta came out early and in full force to support Elder. Although I was only able to catch one song from Elder, I could hear the crowd shouting and applauding in between each song during their set.
Elder’s (incomplete) setlist from this evening’s performance is below:
·         “Compendium”
·         “Merged in Dreams-Ne Plus Ultra”
·         “Halcyon”
Give my dudes at Elder some love and head over to their Bandcamp page or their official shop directory for some merchandise. If you have followed my column over the years, then you should recognize the band Elder from previous reviews published by Concerthopper.com. You can read those reviews by following these links: Elder, Ruby the Hatchet, & Dreadnought: Live at The Earl (2022) & North American Tour 2023: Elder, REZN, and Lord Buffalo Live @ The Earl (2023).
TOOL is a progressive rock/progressive metal/alt metal/post-metal/art rock band from Los Angeles, CA. that formed back in 1990. TOOL consists of Adam Jones (guitars), Danny Carey (drums/percussion), Justin Chancellor (bass), and Maynard James Keenan (vocals). They have released five (5) LPs, one (1) box set, four (4) video albums, fifteen (15) singles, nine (9) music videos, and two (2) EPs. TOOL’s latest release, Fear Inoculum (August 30, 2019), was released on Volcano/RCA and is their first studio album in over thirteen years. A modern-day Pink Floyd, TOOL has pushed the envelope with their musical vision since releasing their debut album, Undertow, on Zoo Entertainment in 1993. Not to mention their ever-changing elaborate backdrop that accentuates their dynamic and profound live performances.
TOOL kicked off the evening with the title track from their latest album, “Fear Inoculum” and followed with one of my favorite tracks, “Jambi”. Although, while this song played, I was making my best impression of a track star as I hurried to unload my gear so that I could watch the rest of the show. I was able to enter during the third song, “Rosetta Stoned”, but before I went to the main arena, I needed to see if there were any posters left to purchase. To my surprise, the main merchandise table had some posters left which still amazes me as I write this review. Normally the posters are the first thing to go, so I consider myself very lucky (again). Once settled at my spot, TOOL proceeded to melt faces with blistering performances of “Pneuma”, “Intolerance”, “Descending”, and “The Grudge” in a four-song set to close out the first portion of the night. Hearing TOOL pull out “Intolerance” from the album Undertow was a pleasant surprise. It has been ages since I last heard that song live in concert. Not to mention the surprises that TOOL had in store for us during the second half of the evening.
Since the release of the latest album, it has been customary for Danny to perform the track “Chocolate Chip Trip” and put the crowd into a deep trance with his intricate and technical abilities behind the drumkit. Then it all came to a head during the next song as Justin started playing the opening bass line to another epic track from the 1993 album Undertow, “Flood”. It felt like TOOL dug deep into their bag of tricks so they could show the crowd how far they had come from their humble beginnings during the early 90’s.
