The Ghost of You (feat. Cordelia Wilson -- semi-original character, but not really.) | part one.
trigger warnings: suicide, aftermath of suicide, sexual references, and swearing.
synopsis: When you & Wade have a mishap with a time machine, you're sent to an alternate universe. Things are very different there, yet so similar.
notes: this was not as smutty as I meant for it to be when I first started writing. it's pretty angsty, actually. if anyone wants a smutty part 2, hit me up! Also: I just don’t feel like “Wanda” really suits Ladypool. I know it’s just a woman’s name that’s close to Wade, so that’s why it was chosen, but I’ve been watching a lot of Angel lately and I felt like Cordelia (especially with Cordy as a nickname with friends and Lia as one from an S/O) fits so much better! Plus, I don’t like that for the most part Ladypool is shown as having flowing blonde hair and smooth skin. I’m kinda into the scars. So, we can just pretend this is a different Ladypool. In case you’re confused, Yukio is a unisex (? Or maybe traditionally male) name so I just kept it! F/F = Favorite Food, F/M = Favorite Movie, and FFM = a lot of fun!
“Well, where the fuck are we?” Wade wonders aloud.
“My house. Nice cosplay, but- Y/N?”
“How do you know her name?” and “How do you know my name?” are asked in unison by Wade and you.
“You don’t… You don’t remember me?”
You inch closer to Wade. Her mind is like his, dense around the edges. There’s nothing at the surface yet and you don’t want to prod further without permission, or at least protection in case things get hairy.
“We’ve never met,” you carefully respond.
“We’re just a bit lost. Time travel, you know how it goes,” Wade remarks.
“Care to introduce yourselves?”
“Y/N L/N, as you, uh, already seem to know.”
“And I’m Deadpool. Wade Wilson.”
“Ha, nice try, but there’s no way. I’m Deadpool. Cordelia Wilson.”
“I’m pretty sure I’d know if I wasn’t Deadpool.”
“Wait, look at her. She does look like you. Maybe Ellie and Yukio fudged the time machine when they were fixing it. Wasn’t Nathan just talking about alternate universes, how a lot of the newer models of this can travel to those, too?”
“You can, uh… You can look inside my head if you want.”
“You two must go way back,” Wade laughs. “Even I don’t let her do that.”
Cordelia looks hurt. Devastated, even.
“You really ought to. She can help,” she suggests in an even tone that clearly takes a great deal of force to maintain.
“I don’t think I need to look inside your head to know that you’re telling the truth,” you say softly. Something about that hurts her more. “I’m sorry, did I-“
“No. It’s just…” She sniffs. “It’s just really good to see you again. I know you’re not-“
“Jeez, Y/N, what’d you do to her?!” Wade teases.
“Don’t talk to her like that,” Cordelia snaps. The team’s constant teasing weighs down on you, but hearing someone defend you feels wrong.
“Hey, it’s okay. He was just joking.” Your tone stays gentle; you’re not digging into her head at all but the pain is now rolling off of her in waves, you can’t not read that.
“Yeah, I was just kidding around. It’s been real, but we’ve gotta go. Y/N, if I press the home button on this thingy again, do you think it’ll take us back to the right home next time?”
“Maybe. Or maybe we’ll end up in a hell dimension,” you remark, and Cordelia squeaks.
“Let’s not try that!” she quickly interjects. “I’ve, uh, I’ve got room here. Maybe my Cable and Negasonic can help you two out. The X-Force is all away on a mission right now, but they’ll be back in a few days… Maybe I should call them. I don’t know, it might hurt more. Being around you longer, I mean-”
“If X-Force is on a mission, shouldn’t their leader be with them?” Wade inquires.
“I quit, after-” she stops, but upon meeting your pleading gaze, she continues. “After Y/N died. It’s just solo shit now to pay bills, other than that… I don’t go out much at all.”
As if things weren’t awkward enough.
“Dude, you died?! I didn’t even think that was possible, I mean, you subconsciously detect threats before they’re even thought of, and your brain halted your aging process once you were done with puberty.” Wade’s shocked, but you’re not. You know exactly what happened. You’re already planning it.
You look at her, and you subtly shake your head.
Don’t tell him, you push in. Please don’t.
“Plan’s already in motion, huh? And you think I wouldn’t try to save you after I failed once before?”
“What? What plan?”
“She’s gonna fucking kill herself!” Cordelia reveals, furious. “And you’re just like me, I bet. An idiot who’s in love with her but hasn’t said anything because they’re too afraid to lose.”
“I- I’m not-“
“Oh, so you’re in denial, too. Don’t worry, it’ll set in when you hear her say ‘I love you,’ for the last time on that voicemail, when you read that letter over and over until your tears have smeared all the ink and you hate yourself for destroying the last piece of her you have! And when you lay awake each night because your body doesn’t need sleep, you’ll lay there wondering if maybe you’d just told her, or let her tell you, she’d’ve realized that- That- That-“
“Cordelia…” you murmur, drawing the sobbing woman into your arms. Even this universe’s Deadpool is taller than you, having to slump down to bury her face in your shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay. It’s okay.”
“It’s not okay!” Wade nearly screams, and you flinch. Cordelia’s grip tightens protectively. “Is she right?! Are you really planning to-“
“It doesn’t matter right now.”
“Of course it matters! I-“
“What? You love me? Don’t even. I wanted to be with you so badly, and you- You made your choice.”
“I was in love with Vanessa, and you were barely legal! Things are different now.”
“Yeah, she dumped you. That’s all that’s really changed, don’t pretend otherwise. You’ll only hurt both of us,” you insist.
“He- He rejected you?” Cordelia whimpers.
“Harshly,” you confirm. “It was a few years ago, we’re good friends, now. Still kinda stings when it gets brought up, though.”
“I- Oh, I’m so sorry. I- Wow, he actually got a chance with you and didn’t take it. I can’t imagine.”
“I didn’t ask you out?” you wonder. “But you’re so sweet.”
“I- I think you wanted to. You kept trying to get alone with me, kept saying you wanted to talk, but I was so nervous, I kept making excuses. And then I went to Brazil for this mission, just to get away from it all, and… The cell service there sucks, I came back to so many voicemails. Only one of ‘em was from you. Everybody else was telling me about what happened, that… That you were gone.”
“What about Vanessa?” you ask.
“Who? Oh, maybe Vincent? He, uh… He didn’t care too much for my new look, so even once I got him away from Francine and killed that bitch… We were done for. You were there. Praskoviya and Elijah, they were so cold about it, but you… You asked, first, and you dulled the pain. Filled all the empty with this… Light. I’ve never felt anything like it. I only- I wish- If only- You-“ She dissolves into tears once more.
You rub her back, tears slipping down your own face at her pain.
“I’m sorry that I- I mean, I know it wasn’t me, but it was, I- I’m sorry that happened. I’m sure if I’d known… But that’s not what you wanna hear, is it? That just confirms…”
Cordelia cries harder.
“Cordelia, Cordelia, it’s alright. I’m here now. I- Do you want me to stay here?”
“What?!” Cordelia and Wade ask at the same time.
“I don’t think… I mean, I was kinda planning to off myself back home. Clearly not the best environment. And you…” You look around her apartment. It’s a disaster, and that's the nicest way to put it. “You need me here, don’t you?”
“We need you!” Wade protests.
“Oh, the others… They- They’re better at putting on smiles, but they miss you so much. We all do.” She’s not even disguising her hope.
“So would we!” Wade insists.
“Would you, though? Really?” you bitterly remark. “All you guys ever do is complain about me.”
“We’re joking.”
“Doesn’t feel like a joke when that’s all it ever is. It just hurts,” you confess.
“Then we’ll stop, or- I- No. I can’t lose you, not like I lost- Not like she lost- Please think about this. If you like this version of me so much better, we can figure out a way to take her with us. That’s the compromise, so don’t try to negotiate,” Wade says, and his tone is grave, but he’s begging, you can tell. You’ve got two Deadpools at your mercy right now, and in any other context, you’d giggle.
“But the others-“
“Shut it, Ladypool, you lost your chance. You can’t take mine.”
“You lost your chance, too. You would have if this hadn’t’ve happened, fucktard,” Cordelia nearly snarls. “At least meet them before you make your decision. I’ll follow you to that other place, but… But everyone here, they miss you so much. Oh, Eli and Yukio would just be delighted to see you. Those boys looked up to you so much. And Nora… Ah, you know she tries to be all tough, but she misses your hugs almost as much as I do, I can tell.”
“Nathan does love your hugs. He says it all the time. Grumbles it. ‘Only went on this stupid fuckin’ mission ‘cause Y/N hugs us when we get back. You think if I got her a keychain to put on her lanyard she’d give me an extra one?’” Wade imitates the older man in a dopey voice.
Cordelia bitterly chuckles.
“So, I guess everybody but you is genderswapped here,” she notes. “It doesn’t seem like much else is different, other than Vincent staying with that one a little longer.” She redirects her words, looking at Wade with a coldness you’ve never seen in his face, but she wears it well. ”Can’t imagine why, you seem like way more of a jerk than me. And Y/N asked you out. Men really get everything handed to them, huh?”
“I guess so,” Wade mumbles.
Cordelia reaches out, cupping your face, and you squirm a little, suddenly aware of your proximity.
“I- I’m sorry. This is probably really weird for you, isn’t it? I just… I never thought I’d see you again, let alone touch you, and I… I’m not thinking clearly.”
“Would you really be Deadpool if you were?” you offer a joke, knowing it’ll ease her up a bit, before sobering a little. “It’s only weird ‘cause, uh… Um… I’m sorry, you’re just really pretty. Is it okay if I say that? I don’t wanna-“
Both Deadpools laugh.
“Pretty, she’s me, she looks like me, and you think-“
“I’ve always thought you were pretty. I mean, handsome, yeah, but… Pretty,” you cut Wade off. It hurts so much to be reminded of your attraction to him, how you were rejected so firmly that you knew you would never have a chance, but suddenly you do, two chances, and it’s… A lot.
“You really think…?” Cordelia trails off, moving her hand from your face to her own. “There’s just no way.”
“It’s just one feature. The scars, I mean. They don’t define you entirely,” you reassure both of them. “Plus, I hate to sound like a perv, but there’s probably at least a little bit of a benefit to them, right? Like, texture-wise?”
They’re laughing again, but this time, it’s not self-deprecating. It’s at your expense.
Cordelia wraps you back up in her arms, still shaking a bit with laughter.
“I’ve missed you,” she mumbles into your hair, taking a deep breath through her nose and sighing. “You even smell the same.”
“This is getting a little creepy,” Wade comments, and she pulls back, giving you space.
“I’m sorry, again, it’s just-“
“Don’t be,” you reassure her, resuming the hug. “It’s understandable. I can’t even imagine what you’re feeling right now.”
“You’re really here,” she whispers, voice cracking. “You’re- I know it’s strange, it’s not you, but it is, you’re just… You’re just like you. I- I’m gonna call them. That mission… They can just wrap it up, or the X-Men can handle it themselves.”
She pulls away to grab her phone from her back pocket.
It takes a few rings.
“Ugh, well, hello to you, too, Nora! No, it’s important. It’s- I’m serious, it’s important! Not important like that free moon taco thing, really important! Well, I would’ve spit it out if you hadn’t- It’s, uh… It’s Y/N. She’s here. It’s not like last time! She’s really here, I’m not seeing things, it’s hard to explain, but- Fine, I’ll ask her. Can you talk to her?”
You nod.
“Um, hi. Nora, right?” you ask.
“Oh my fucking god.”
“It’s kind of a long story, um… I’m from a different universe. Basically everybody else is genderswapped, and Wade- Uh, Cordelia’s male counterpart and I kinda got lost. We met you, well, Nathan, during this one mission, and Ellie and Yukio— Eli and Yukio, here, I guess —were fixing your time machine. We think they might’ve fudged it, since we ended up here, so we were just hoping for some help to get home, if you, uh, don’t mind. Please and thank you in advance.”
“I… Oh, fuck, put Cordy back on.”
You pass the phone to Cordelia.
“I know,” she says softly, looking at you with awe. “I know. Fuck, Nora, I know,” she weeps with glee. “I know. Okay. I’ll let them know.”
She hangs up.
“They’re on their way.”
“Thank you,” you tell her. “Wade, say thank you.”
“Thanks,” he huffs. “If I knew that growing a set of tits would be what it took for you to notice my feelings, then-”
“You’re kidding, right? Looking back, there’s no way you didn’t notice mine. But you never discouraged them, did you? You didn’t wanna lose the telepath that’d do anything for you; kept me as backup in case Vanessa didn’t appreciate your transformation,” you retort. “And he wonders why I was planning on killing myself.”
“It- I didn’t mean- I just… I had to choose, and she had seniority, y’know? I- Fuck, stop making me feel bad!”
“You did that to yourself,” Cordelia spats. “Are you hungry? I pretty much exclusively eat F/F, but it’s not the same without you.”
“I could eat,” you agree.
“We just had lunch,” Wade argues.
“I said I can eat,” you insist. While Cordelia prepares the food, you start to clear off the kitchen island. You’re unsure of where certain things go, but getting rid of the trash alone helps. The other stuff just has to be organized a little.
She turns around.
“No, no, no, where… Where’d you put everything?”
“The- The trash?”
“No, that plastic, it was on F/M, you gave me- And- And that old grocery list, you wrote it for me ‘cause I’m always forgetting, and- And-” Cordelia starts to hyperventilate, and you’re paralyzed with guilt. You were only trying to help.
“Hey, stop it, you’re scaring her,” Wade scolds her.
“No, no, I’m just- I’m sorry, I didn’t know, I was just trying to help,” you clarify.
“Right,” Cordelia says softly, her breathing returning to normal, slowly but surely. “Don’t be sorry, sweetness, I- I don’t need that stuff anymore. You’re right here in person, not just memories anymore. Beautiful. So beautiful.”
“Right here,” you assure her. “With you.”
“With me,” she breathes, and her smile is radiant before she returns to her cooking.
“Are you sure you can handle this?” Wade asks you quietly.
“Don’t be a dick.”
“I have enhanced hearing, too, dumbass,” Cordelia says, still facing the stove, and you snicker. “Music?”
“Sure,” you reply. The phone opens upon scanning your face. “Why’s my face in here?”
“Sometimes you’d answer texts for me and stuff, on bad days.”
You open up Spotify, and see that she’s following all of your playlists, even the old ones you hadn’t listened to in forever. You smile, before picking one.
“I didn’t realize your music taste was good,” Wade scoffs.
“Neither did I, until…” Cordelia trails off, looking from the garbage bin to you. Her lost, grief-stricken expression brightens into a full-fledged grin. “Beautiful. Just beautiful.”
“If you call her that one more time, I’m gonna barf,” Wade grumbles.
“What, you don’t think so?”
“I do, but… Ugh, you’re being creepy. And it’s reminding me of how I’m creepy,” he admits.
“It seems like Y/N appreciates creepy, considering she’s blushing,” Cordelia remarks, leering at you and making your face heat up even more. “And crushing on us.” She turns back to the stove.
“Huh,” Wade mutters. “Yeah, that would explain a lot. Like Marissa.” He chuckles, like it’s just some joke, because you never told anyone why you really broke up.
“Marissa... Wait, you don’t mean… Super-strength?” Her tone is tense, and her actions get choppier, more aggressive.
“Yup,” Wade confirms. “Total weirdo, too, no idea why she stuck around so long,” he teases.
“You shut your fucking mouth,” Cordelia says, finally putting a timer on and standing at the counter.
“He- He doesn’t know,” you quietly interject.
“He didn’t save you?” Cordelia asks, an incredulous expression on her face.
“You did?”
“Yeah. I clocked that fucking creep the second he ‘accidentally’ broke your arm. Having super-strength that long, you learn control. Fucking Mark. Wish I had a time machine just so I could turn him into a kebab all over again.”
“That wasn’t an accident?” Wade asks.
“It- She just got a little frustrated, that’s all. Grabbed too hard.”
“Why didn’t you tell me? Tell us? We’re supposed to be a family,” Wade wonders.
“Everyone already sees me as this pathetic little telepath that can’t handle herself. I- I just thought you all would- I don’t know, get mad, laugh at me, I- I don’t know.”
“Jesus, we have to go home. We owe you a fucking apology. A big one.”
“So, she can’t make her own decision, just so you fuckers can feel better?” Cordelia argues. “I can’t even believe we’re the same goddamn person.”
“Well, we hate ourselves, so it makes sense that we wouldn’t get along,” Wade reminds her.
“She’s worth it. If I go with you.”
“That, I can agree with,” he says. “Y/N, I fucked up. Bad. On multiple occasions, apparently. I’m sorry. I can’t believe I haven’t said that yet. And we don’t see you as pathetic. We only joke that you’re weak because you’re the strongest on the team. You could kick any of our asses, any day, and not even break a sweat. That’s no excuse, though. We should be praising you just as much, otherwise… Fuck, how didn’t I see that? We fucking bullied you, and you still… You’re nothing but kind, always giving advice and comfort, and- And- Oh, fuck, I need to be alone for a sec.”
Wade goes for the bathroom, locking himself inside. The mirror is shattered, there’s pieces on the ground and in the sink. He carefully picks them up and puts them in the wastebin, looking at his surroundings. Blood in the tub, blood on the ceiling, blood on the walls. He’s no stranger to killing himself in the bathroom just to shut up his mind, but shit. This is bad. This is his world, without you. Torn apart at the seams.
He breathes in deep, fuck, you taught him those breathing exercises. He drinks some cool water from the sink before splashing some more on his face. He turns the faucet off, rejoining you at the counter with Cordelia.
“Didn’t wanna eat without you,” you tell him softly, and he sighs, getting his own portion of F/F.
The three of you eat in heavy silence.
When you’re just about done, there’s a knock at the door. You get up to answer it, and both Deadpools push you back onto your stool. Cordelia makes her way over, checking the peephole before opening it.
The entirety of the gender-swapped X-Force pushes their way in.
“Fucking weird,” Wade blurts, and you shoot him a quick glare.
“Wow,” Nora breathes. “It’s really you. I- I mean, I believed it, but… Fuck.”
“Stop drooling,” Cordelia jokes, nudging her friend. You giggle, but then you’re attacked with a hug.
“Eli, right?” you ask softly. He nods into your shoulder, and you feel his tears soaking through your shirt. You pry him off of you, holding his hands. “No tears, handsome. Wouldn’t wanna ruin that eyeliner.” He laughs, but he’s still weeping a little.
“Missed you,” he says quietly.
“I’m-” you start, but he shakes his head.
“Not the same you. But still… The same,” he sums it up perfectly.
“Back off, Eli, I want a hug, too!” Yukio pipes up. Both of you laugh, and he parts with you completely, letting his boyfriend have a turn.
“Oh, wow,” the more cheerful of the pair says, squeezing you before letting go. “You’re way better at makeup than the other you.”
You laugh. That’s Yukio for you. Both girls-- well, in this universe, boys --are blunt, but well-meaning. They understand each other in that way.
“Thanks,” you reply with a grin.
Next up is Neena, her male counterpart, at least.
His name? you ask Cordelia telepathically.
Neil, she responds.
“Hey, Neil,” you sigh happily. He smells just as good as Neena, a combination of cinnamon and lavender that shouldn’t really work but somehow does.
“I usually take my luck for granted, but getting to see you again… God, I really am the luckiest man alive. We’ve all missed you so fucking much.” His hug is a little shorter, but he looks happy. You know he just doesn’t want to get attached. He knows you have to go home.
Last is Praskoviya.
“My beautiful friend!” she cries out, wrapping you up in those big metal arms. “I remember when I came to school. All our peers, terrified. But you… Oh, my best friend, since then. I was so scared before you, and when you were gone… Scared again.” She, like the others, has leaking eyes. She lets you go.
“I- I know it sounds silly, having just met you and all, but I guess, in a way, I do know you, but… I love you guys. I- I didn’t know that you all cared so much.”
“This is Wade,” Cordelia says, gesturing to her male counterpart. “These two need a little help getting home, and I- I’ll be going with them.”
You expect protests, but none come. You scan their minds, and realize the truth. They know she needs you the most, and that their equivalents back home need you, too. Their time with you was over, this moment is simply a gift.
“Should be an easy enough fix. Probably just an issue with the connector between the navigational system and the dial. Happens too often with this model, they nearly recalled it,” Nora informs the group. “We should all settle in, though, it’ll be a while before Eli and I can get it resoldered. It’s delicate work.”
It’s not, you realize. You didn’t mean to continue to peep in their heads, but it happened. She just wants to see you a bit longer, give the others more time.
In a flash, though, Nathan and Ellie are there.
“What the actual fuck?” Ellie blurts.
“Long story,” you say.
“Who died?” Nathan asks.
“Me,” you inform him. “About, uh…”
“Two years ago,” Praskoviya solemnly fills in the blank.
“This is trippy,” Ellie says.
“You’re telling me,” you reply. “Uh, any chance I could stay longer?”
“You’re genderswapped here, too?” Nathan asks.
“Not quite.”
“No can do, then. If you’re the same here as you are at home, you’re too close to the original. Your death was an important event on the timeline. We need you out of here, ASAP.”
“Probably my villain origin story,” Ellie murmurs. “Give ‘em hell,” she encourages her male counterpart with a bitter chuckle, and he gives her a thumbs-up.
“We can take Cordelia, though, right?” you ask.
“Fuck no, we don’t need another-” Upon seeing the expression on your face, he stops. “Guess it’d be no different to our timeline than one of Wade’s retarded limb babies. Plus, might prevent the Blip from happening here, since she won’t be here to cuck Thanos. Fine. Let’s get going.”
“Can I say goodbye, first?” you request.
“Just make it quick,” Nathan says.
“One last group hug?” you offer. They all quickly embrace you, and each other. You’ve never felt this loved before in your entire life.
“Okay, I’m ready,” you say, after the group begrudgingly lets go. “Are you?” you ask Cordelia. She nods. You, her, Wade, and Ellie grab onto Nathan.
The next thing you know, you’re home.
