Bucking the Velvet
It’s always a pleasure to walk outside to the presence of a young buck. During the fall, their antlers are cover in velvet and then shed that velvet to become “hard horned”. We have noticed in the past few years in La Porte County that bucks are grazing close to the does all summer, which is unusual. Bucks are normally reclusive and tend to stay just within sight of a group of does. ~Kimberly…

Rockets Red Glare
This morning I should be waking up for the day, right around the time of this 9AM posting, with a dehydration headache and a sunburn. It’s become an annual tradition that came to an abrupt end last year. I know, sunburns aren’t healthy and I need to drink more water when I’m in the sun all day, but it’s one day a year so please, cut me some slack. Last night should have been the annual fireworks…

Deputies made a peculiar discovery after a required body scan of an arrestee revealed a foreign object inside his anal cavity.
Lt. Jeff Holt, assistant jail commander of operations at the La Porte County Jail in Indiana, was assisting deputies on May 17 when one of the people arrested refused to have his body scan taken.
All arrestees are required to go through a "SecurPASS" Body Scan before being booked into jail, according to a Facebook post from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office.
The arrestee finally agreed to get the scan and during a review of the images, Holt saw a foreign object lodged inside the man’s anal cavity.
Because of his many years of training, Holt was able to recognize that the object was metal and escorted the man to another room for an additional search.
The arrestee was put through a second body scan and the object moved to a position which made it easier to positively identify as scissors.
The scissors were removed without incident.
"The body scanner is an incredible state of the art tool used to ensure the safety and security of all within the La Porte County Jail. Lieutenant Holt is commended for relying upon his training and experience, and successfully preventing a dangerous edged object from making its way fully into the jail," said Captain Derek J. Allen.

Fast-food workers used customers’ money to bail out jail inmates: police
Tumblr media
Fast Food Scam Unveiled: Inmates' Debit Card Scheme Fast food lovers, beware! As inflation continues to rise, popular chains like McDonald's and Chipotle have been boosting their prices. But that's not the only concern in the world of fast food. In a bizarre and complex plot, some crafty individuals at an Indiana Hardee's have been swiping customers' debit card details to help inmates escape from jail. Yep, you read that right. Let's break down this eyebrow-raising story. A few weeks ago, sharp-eyed officials at La Porte County Jail noticed large sums of money flowing from outside the prison into inmates' Securus accounts. These accounts are used by prisoners to make calls and other transactions. What raised suspicions was the money transfer from external sources into these accounts. But it gets even crazier. The inmates allegedly used the illicit funds to bail themselves out of jail. They then slyly transferred the remaining balance to a debit card issued by the jail. It was a sophisticated scheme involving money laundering, turning "dirty money" into "clean money." The investigation took off when Chief of Detectives Capt. Andy Hynek launched a formal probe. It soon led to a network involving employees at a Hardee's restaurant in Michigan City. Here's how it worked: A handful of Hardee's employees, during August and September, reportedly snapped photos of debit and credit cards belonging to drive-thru customers. These accounts were then used to pump money into the Securus accounts of inmates with low bail amounts. Once the inmates had their hands on the funds, they'd make a swift exit from jail. But the madness didn't end there. After leaving jail, the former inmates would head to nearby ATMs and withdraw the balance from the jail-issued debit card, which, believe it or not, is part of the standard procedure. The total amount of fraudulent charges added up to $14,700. While authorities didn't disclose the specific Hardee's location, there's only one in Michigan City on Franklin Street. Thankfully, the victims, initially just looking for a quick meal in the drive-thru, are working with their banks to get their money back. The sheriff's office wasn't playing around. They identified ten individuals involved in this scheme, and arrest warrants were swiftly issued for all of them. The charges include fraud and criminal organizational activity. Four of the suspects are already behind bars, with efforts underway to apprehend the remaining five. Only one person, Dylnn V. Scott, is still at large, and authorities are urging the public to report any tips on his whereabouts. In the end, the sheriff's office expressed relief that they spotted the irregularities early on, preventing more innocent citizens from falling victim to this bizarre fast food-fueled crime. Stay tuned for updates on this peculiar case as it unfolds. Read the full article

Haunted Building Story Time!
@muselin suggested it so here we are. Honestly I haven’t had any supernatural experiences here in this building yet, but some teachers I’ve had in the past say they have and that enough for me! Did a bit of research cause why the heck not and so I’m including that in here as well cause that might be a reason why this building is haunted. This is a really crappy story time just so guys know. Hopefully me posting this doesn’t result in me being hunted down by some ghost. I very much like being alive and well.
So Elston Middle School (1925) (formally Elston High School (1909) I believe) is named after Major Isaac C. Elston. The last graduating class of the high school was in 1995 and the middle school officially closed its doors in 2015. The building is now used in connection with the AK Smith Career offering classes that can help students begin their post-secondary path (blah blah blah blah). Enough with this boring stuff and onto the other history things.
Back in 1835 Isaac Elston set aside the grounds on which the school stands to be used public burial land. The cemetery was ultimately abandoned and neglected by 1882 a new cemetery was built elsewhere in Michigan City, Indiana (please don’t hunt me down).
According to a 2019 article by The Beacher Weekly Newspaper, "Broken headstones and molding bones were all that remained of some of the most influential citizens of Michigan City's past."
Residents of the old burial ground were moved to Greenwood Cemetery, and according to the La Porte County Genealogical Society, most were reburied in section E near Tilden Ave. and Barker Ave. (pictured).
Sadly, of the 500 or so people buried in the old cemetery, only 188 were identified through their headstone, The Beacher says. Over the years, throughout several expansion and construction projects on the Elston Building, more remains have been found - as recently as 2003. During excavation to make room for a new front to Elston Middle School, at least 13 bodies were found and moved to Greenwood.
Over the years, students, staff, and visitors to Elston have claimed the building is haunted. Local lore says the theater (pictured) is the residence of a ghost named "Alice" who has been reportedly seen sitting in the theater and floating across the stage. (source)
I mentioned before that some of my teacher had experiences here. Two of them claimed the elevator would open and close on its own when no one was around to push any buttons and such. Nothing too shabby there. One of the comments on the post I linked from the district FB page says they remember seeing a little girl in a white dress with completely black eyes in the tunnel that led from the cafeteria (which was located in the basement) to the gym. I know my junior year during a little class party we did, our class snuck down to the basement of the AK Smith building and when down to a room with a singular chair in the center of it. @iamthecabbage was sacrificed to a ghost by one of our classmates and lived.
Again, I’ve never experienced anything but the thought of this place being built on burial grounds it isn’t the most pleasant. Not to mention that bodies that were dug up and moved to the new cemetery and the thought that maybe not all the bodies were moved or that they weren’t happy to be disturbed in the afterlife they were in gives me plenty of reason to believe that this place could be haunted.

Note: Super off topic but to lighten the mood here I just gave my Strawberry Poptarts sway to a student. Does give me substitute brownie points? Have me as a sub you will be fed if I have food left over from lunch. I promise you shall not go hungry under my watch. Now I just gotta make sure this high schooler doesn’t choke on me like my 4th grader that one Friday three weeks ago.

Fields of Gold
October 12 2023 Bean fields are plentiful throughout the Midwest. Just yesterday, the unharvested fields of gold were lined with delivery trucks awaiting their payload as the combine gathered the crop that pays for the farmer to live throughout the winter. Here in Laporte County, not to be confused with the city of Laporte, we are accustomed to pulling to the side of the road as the 14 foot…

Wolf Lake Memorial Park, IN (No. 2)
Originally inhabited by Potawatomi tribes, Lake County was established on February 16, 1837. From 1832 to 1836 the area that was to become Lake County was part of La Porte County. From 1836 to 1837 it was part of Porter County. It was named for its location on Lake Michigan. The original county seat was Liverpool until Lake Court House, which later became Crown Point, was chosen in 1840. Lake County's population grew slowly before the 1850s, when the railroads arrived to link Chicago to the rest of the country, and enabled tens of thousands of settlers and immigrants to buy land. Small-scale industrialization began, but was primarily relegated to the northern coast of the county. The 1900 Census gives a population of 37,892 residents. In 2010, its population was 496,005, making it Indiana's second-most populous county. The county seat is Crown Point.
