my companion piece to @softgaycontent ‘s fic “Kyoshi Book 3: Air” for the @kyoshinovelsbigbang this was an amazing challenge that I loved tackling!

The sharp slope of the mountain meets in a pointed spire, cutting through the clouds. Winding paths carved into the rock add to the stunning beauty of the temple, a complex, manmade structure incomprehensibly resting a mile above sea level.

Rangi gasps, one hand releasing from the reins to cover her mouth. Kyoshi and Jinpa had agreed that she should take the best seat in the house for their arrival to the Southern Air Temple, but now a part of Kyoshi regrets putting her up front. She’d really like to see her face right now.

The Moon Will Sing 

Carrying a weight as heavy as her Avatarhood meant Kyoshi would always be caught at the crossroads of existence. Destined for a lifetime of trials, endless years fighting upwards battles, and the knowledge that she would never achieve perfection.  When looking down from the eye of a storm of her own making, it was easy for Kyoshi to forget how vulnerable she truly was, once her feet touched solid ground.

A post-canon fic set two years after the end of the Camellia-Peony War, where Avatar Kyoshi sets course for the Eastern Air Temple, hoping to understand her past and her place in the world.

summary:  

In a moment of fear after her encounter in the spirit world, Kyoshi runs away to a place she knows she won't be found: the Eastern Sea, just near the South Pole. As the newest member of the Fifth Nation, Kyoshi plans to keep her past behind her. Yet while Kyoshi grapples with the deaths of her loved ones, her newfound powers, and the threat of Jianzhu lurking behind her, Rangi is tasked with returning the Avatar to Yokoya. But when Rangi finds Kyoshi, she hesitates to bring her to Jianzhu and her mother. As the girls spend more time together and the fleet of pirates, they discover more about themselves and each other.

Rangi’s lip tilts up into a smirk, “Congratulations, Kyoshi. You were a lot harder to find than I expected.”

Kyoshi struggles to find her words. “What are you doing here Rangi?” It’s her. She’s actually here.

From the way her lips are pressed together and how her brows are furrowed, Kyoshi can assume Rangi didn’t run off to join her. She’d expected Jianzhu to send someone after her, but the arrival of her closest friend leaves her unable to think straight.

The firebender ignores her question, instead crossing her arms. “Why’d you leave?”

“I had no choice. And I certainly didn’t want to get you involved.”

“Well, I don’t ignore my responsibilities, so when my mother and Jianzhu requested that I pick you up, I said yes. Did you ever consider the consequences of what you’ve done? How we would feel about it?” Rangi points a finger into her own chest with the last question, and Kyoshi feels guilty at the frustration behind her words and the dark circles underneath her eyes.

Before she can respond, Kyoshi hears footsteps, and her stomach sinks. It seems that misfortune has a habit of finding her.

In the blink of an eye Rangi had neatly tumbled across the saddle folding herself onto Kyoshi’s lap. Rangi reached up and brushed a loose hair out of Kyoshi’s face, the gentle gesture sent a wave of happiness through Kyoshi’s body.
