Crazy how Buddy Daddies went from initially a gay SpyXFamily clone to the general public to such a strong contender for best Winter anime of 2023. The fact that it’s an original anime without a manga, and so fans watched on every week as it twisted, turned, and surprised and we had no supplementary materials. Not only was it heartwarming and heartbreaking, it had such a solid story and didn’t reach out to far or spiral away from the core “found family” plot like so many other anime originals do.

I throughly enjoyed the story of the Oil Baron, Comedian, and their young daughter who has a bright future ahead of her.

Episode 8 takes place on August 10th, Rei’s birthday. At the end of that episode we see Kyu get confronted with a new assignment from the boss: to gain information on Kazuki and Miri.

Episode 9 takes place on October 15th, Miri’s sports day. At the end of that episode we see Kyu get confronted once again with photographs, this time of Rei, Kazuki, and Miri at the latter’s daycare, and is reminded of the job that he has to complete.

This happens over two months later, and yet Ogino and the boss have clearly not been given what they asked for.

There’s a good chance this means that Kyu has been dragging his feet about dealing with this whole situation, and deciding between disobeying the organization - which will surely end in his death - or betraying those who he has a soft spot in his heart for, and who are finally starting to heal from the trauma that the organization has already put them through.

The organization has already failed Kazuki, Rei, and Miri, and they’ve taken that hurt and used it to start over. However, we’ve yet to see the organization fail Kyu, and that might be what gets served to us through the end of the season. And of course, the other three are likely to get dragged into it.

can't believe an anime called buddy daddies did not end up being, in fact, just a silly little comedy of two hitmen raising a child together but instead an actual heartwarming, well written show about (re)learning to love and to be loved, about how the meaning of family goes way beyond blood and no matter how unconventional it may be, it's still as perfect and valid because it's yours and you wouldn't trade it for anything else

Kyu-chan was so wicked for telling Miri that Kazuki is a failed stand-up comedian because now, half the time he goes to pick up Miri from the kindergarden a kid is going to walk up to him and ask him to tell a joke and poor Kazuki is going to go blank, which will only reinforce everyone's notions of how bad he is at his job

Kyutaro really could have just told her any old normal job and Miri would have believed it but instead he decided to use this opportunity to fuck with Kazuki and Rei a little bit and I think that’s beautiful. This was the moment I knew Kyu could be trusted because only a true best friend would do something like this.

Rei is the voice of reason in this family idc

I love how when we're first introduced to Rei he's depicted as irresponsible and someone who doesn't really have his life together and Kazuki does. However, we see time and time again that Kazuki can be impulsive and let's his emotions dictate his behavior a lot and Rei is the one who really keeps him in check because actually he's much more put together than he first appears.

Like when Kazuki is about to throw hands with the bitch that abandoned his daughter and is now demanding to take her back and Rei stops him like: "Hey, I get it but maybe not right here in front of the daycare with all of these parents watching."

Or when Kazuki is fuming about the fact that Rei invited Misaki back to their home to discuss and Rei has to remind him that it's the only sensible option. Not to mention that he has to remind Kazuki: "Hey, we may hate her mother but Miri still loves her and it wouldn't be right to disrespect her mother in front of her. We have to be responsible parents, set a good example, and sort this out conscientiously."

Or when Kazuki's rage transfers over to Misaki taking over his kitchen and Rei has to remind him that Miri is what's most important here, that's what this is all about, not some bitch we hate heating up some frozen hamburg steaks in our kitchen.

While clearly desperate to keep his daughter in his custody, he constantly reminds everyone in the room that Miri is at the center of this and that's what's important. What's best for her, and what will make her happy. Standing up for his 5 year old girl when everyone else is acting a bit selfishly and irrationally.

Or when they go rock-climbing and Kazuki is losing his mind panicking over the safety of their girl (I lost my mind over him referring to Miri as THEIR girl asldkfjsdfjsaoi yes they are a FAMILY and they are her PAPAS) and Rei has to remind him to breathe and that there are safety precautions in place for all of his concerns. He's just an overprotective papa and Rei is there to remind him that he's just an anxious babygirl.

And when Kazuki falls apart when Miri can't see him Rei reminds him to make the most of the last of their time together because they will not be regretting their last moments with Miri.

Rei really is out here just protecting the people he loves. And I can't wait to see him betray the organization in ep. 11 you cannot convince me of anything else, these next few episodes will be the downfall of the organization and they will get Miri back.

aged-up miri: a mini thought dump

first: LOOK AT HER GOOOOO shes so pretty even as a delinquent :')

still, somehow, something about this struck me as odd bc yknow, i wasnt expecting to see a teen Miri this early on in the show, especially since kazuki and rei only declared their promise to take good care of miri like, last episode

and then i realized. that's exactly why. and for kazuki, that means forever.

not to bring up spy x family again, but iirc sxf to this point hasn't aged up anya once, even as a joke. loid and yor don't try to imagine a future anya bc they know their family is temporary

but kazuki? kazuki already imagines being miri's papa at least 10 years in the future. last episode's declaration to kyutaro bore fruit sooner than expected haha

for example, see this, where he imagines Little Miri marrying kyu-chan (/nsrs, in the trademark insane (/aff) way he jumps to conclusions)

and later, when he imagines miri and taiga dating, both as highschoolers

point is, kazuki can see a future after raising miri, and he'll still be her papa by then. and especially after ep5's half-wedding declaration, i'm just waiting for the day he realizes that he wants rei in that future too <3

(or maybe he's so sure of rei being in his life that at this point, he has no place in his delusions anymore, not when he's kazuki's one constant)

Imagine being a guy who is really devoted to your job as an information broker for a hitman organization in the 21st century. Imagine being largely confined to a shady bar in a city alleyway where your main customers are all variations of hitmen and other shady people. Imagine knowing that however important you are, a disgruntled employee or someone screwed over by the organization you devoted your life to could come and enact vengeance on you. Imagine living your life with the healthy fear that this organization will take you out if you show any signs of threatening them. Now imagine that two idiot "definitely not in-love" hitmen manage to fuck up two important jobs in a row and it takes you a lot of effort covering up their mistakes. Imagine after having them lay low and refraining from giving them jobs they show up with a child. This is the child of the man they killed on the first mission they messed up. Imagine having to watch those two somehow manage parenthood when they forgot that daycare existed. Everyday kugi kyutaro wakes up.

Nah I'm more focused on this little scene-

Rei calls Kazuki for Miri's whereabouts rather than chasing her on his own like in EP3, and he barely, if at all, acknowledges Kazuki's frustration with him, likely all too aware of his negligence when she slipped out as he was asleep.

He just decides right then and there, "I'll go, too."

He isn't once again turning over the idea of the police finding Miri for them (he's clearly not fond of the idea of calling them when Kazuki suggests doing so), he doesn't decide to sit home incase she comes back so he isn't out and about more than he'd prefer. He doesn't even consider letting Kazuki handle the situation on his own.

He actively chooses to run around the city for this 4 year old girl who's becoming more and more like a real daughter to him with each passing day.
