Forever obsessed with the fact that Kyu-chan had most likely taken care of the medical aspect of Rei's recovery after he shot himself in the arm and Kazuki and Miri being there for him every step of the way.
Kazuki explaining to Miri that Papa Rei had a bad accident at work and wouldn't really be able to use his arm the way he used to.
Miri being sad at first bc that meant Papa Rei won't be able to play video games with her anymore or hold her. Miri brightening herself up by saying Papa Rei is still Papa Rei, with two functional arms or just one, so she would do everything she could to help him recover.
Kazuki tearing up and hugging his girl and whispering what a good and sweet child she is, that both he and Rei are lucky to be able to call her their daughter. Miri hugging her papa & kissing his cheek.
Rei eavesdropping overhearing from his room, his jaw clenching in an effort to try and keep the tears at bay. They still roll down his cheeks and he quietly wipes them away.
Months of occupational therapy, Kazuki trying to find honest work, Miri going to daycare and trying to cheer up Rei and help him in the house. They're staying at another safe house of Kyu-chan's until they're able to rent their own place.
Miri sometimes rubbing and poking Rei's arm to see if he has any reaction, she grows sad when he doesn't but he just smiles and ruffles her hair, telling her he was fine as long as they all stayed together.
The quiet, tender moments in the evening when Miri is already sound asleep, safe in her bed from any threats. Where Rei is trying to change for bed but his shirt gets stuck on his head with only one arm pulling at it in one direction. Feeling two helping hands pull his shirt off the rest of the way.
Kazuki is holding out his Rei's PJ's to him, at first he refuses to accept help to get dressed, it was embarrassing, he was a grown man.
Kazuki just swats his hands away, all the while snarling what a stubborn bastard he was, but his touch was gentle and careful as he guided Rei's arms into the shirt sleeves and helped him pull up sleeping pants. Rei vehemently insisted on being able to go to the toilet ALONE, but Kazuki still hovered over the closed door from the other side just in case "Rei fell over, hit his head on the tile floor and someone had to fucking call the ambulance".
Kazuki changing for bed himself before he brushes teeth together with Rei. They grow comfortably silent, marveling at how they managed to escape with their lives, how peaceful things were (for now).
They still tense at the slightest sound, Rei reflexively tries to reach for the knife at his night desk, but he forgets he can't use his left arm and makes a mental note to move his knife to the other side for easier access.
Kazuki has multiple weapons; a short knife in the top drawer, a baseball bat under the bed and a small handgun tucked in his underwear drawer (he knew that was the safest place where Miri wouldn't look and couldn't reach). Since Rei was no longer a human weapon, he had to step up and protect both him and Miri in case Rei's father changes his mind and goes after them.
They still need time to fall asleep, Rei feels the phantom pain of the gun wound on his arm, the spot grows tense and spasms randomly throughout the day.
As if sensing his discomfort, Kazuki would reach over and gently massage Rei's arm.
"You don't have to-"
"I want to."
They fall silent again, Rei exhaling at the way his muscles relax again thanks to Kazuki's ministrations. He sinks further into the soft bed, no longer sleeping in the cold hard bathtub. "Thank you."
"Don't mention it. You want an ice-pack?"
"No."
Kazuki had argued the mini fridge in their bedroom was purchased for the sole purpose of storing ice packs for Rei, but it looked suspiciously full of pudding and other sweets for Kazuki to munch on at random intervals during the night.
They fall into a comfortable silence again, until Rei quietly whispers into the darkness. "How is job hunting going?"
Kazuki snorted. "They ask all sorts of questions. What does it matter if can't handle accounting stuff when I work as a waiter? Someone else should count the money after work! Sheesh, they drive me crazy with all those extra questions too! 'What do you like to do in your free time?', 'Why did you leave your previous workplace?', 'Why would you like to work for us?'. Duh, to make money. Besides, it's not like I can just say my previous line of work got a little too dangerous and we almost got killed infiltrating my partner's mafia family mansion."
Rei chuckled quietly. "I don't think that would be a good answer."
Kazuki mirrored his chuckle. "Yeah, neither do I. But...I should find work soon. I will find work soon. So that I can support you and Miri properly and you can rest up well."
Rei tensed again beside him and Kazuki's hand shot out to caress his arm. "Tense, again?"
Rei didn't answer. "Rei?"
A muffled sob filled the silence and Kazuki's lips stretched into a small smile in understanding.
Rei tried to silence any sounds that might escape him, but the overwhelming emotion crushing his chest like a vice had him struggling to keep his composure.
This time, Kazuki's hand touched him again but instead of massaging his arm, he moved to tenderly grab Rei's head and pull him into a hug.
Rei tried to struggle at first, but just sunk into his embrace without much fight after a few seconds.
Kazuki held him close, fingers tenderly running through his messy black hair. He knew what Rei wanted to convey without him uttering any words.
Thank you, Kazuki.
They were safe and together and that was all that mattered.

Misaki has been saying how she wanted to do better for Miri, be better for her. Goes so far as to try her hand at cooking Hamburg steak from scratch because she wants to be able to give her everything she deserves. Then, she dies.
Post episode 7 Kazuki believing that they could change, that they could really be a family. That him and Rei and Miri, despite having not-so-good pasts could have a bright future together. Then, he argues that they’re bad for her, that they need to put her in an orphanage far away. That they could never achieve happiness as a family.
Rei not wanting to care for a child, being wholly unfit and partially unwilling to care for her. Continuing the charade while knowing that he had an obligation to the Suwa family and his fake happiness couldn’t last. Then, advocating to be Miri’s papa, to be with her forever and care for her and love her because him and Kazuki are all she has left in this world.
Tumblr media
Everyone will be hypocrites, indeed.

Okay I’m still on the verge of tears and can’t do this rn so buddy daddies ep 10 jumbled thoughts
Idk wtf anyone says anymore the entire kazurei relationship is queer there is absolutely NO denying it anymore. That scene where Kazuki is looking at kids with their moms, then it cuts to himself? Yeah that’s basically insecurity and feeling terrible he can’t fit their own family into societal standards. Yeah it’s about Miri missing Misaki, about how their careers aren’t meant to accommodate a child but its also about how society has made us all internalize that a ‘right’ family involves a mom, a dad, and a child/
Miri is absolutely sad that Misaki isn’t with her, but she’s never like, so upset she gets devastated. Misaki herself asks “do you like it here better than with me?” and what does Miri answer? She doesn’t says “yeah i like it better here”, BUT she also doesn’t say “I like it best with you!”, she completely dodges and says “I love you mama, and papas too”. Any time a situation involving a mother comes up, she’s like “would be nice if mama were here....anyways!” and doesn’t dwell on it.
I thought Rei smiling would kill me but Kazuki almost CRYING DESTROYED MY SOUL. It’s like watching either of my parents cry its heartbreaking and horrible and i want it to stop. He thought he’d never find that normal happiness, wanted it oh so desperately and then it’s....gone. The Ferris wheel symbolism was horrible I hate the OP for doing that to me. That opening where they’re in front of the billboards was just-- IT WAS IN FRONT OF US THE WHOLE TIME
I think even Rei almost cried. On the ferris wheel, when they focused on his mouth and it twisted downwards before Miri pointed to the city. Kazuki crying was bad enough and had me tearing up too. If Rei was added into the mix I’d have been in shambles
Misaki holy shit wtf, life hates her, cut the woman some slack wow. Throughout the show she was defined by her singing and they took her voice away. It’s horrible, but I’m glad she has parents to go back to. I’m not fully convinced she can take care of Miri, but if she’s being genuine I think she’ll be just fine and would learn just like Kazurei.
Rei sounded so devastated when he was like “you can’t do this when we’re all attached”. Yeah this was his glimpse at normalcy, the one time in his entire life he got to be part of something that didn’t stifle him and it’s gone now.
Kazuki wrapping the scarf around her- hey why don’t I just eat glass? Why don’t I just go on top of a cliff and scream?? Or set fire to my bed???
“I guess we can’t change” BABY NO YOU CAN. YOU CAAAN!!!
I thought Rei would defy the organization and say “screw it I want to protect this family I have”......but his most prominent memory of his mentor is him dying. How defiance led to his and his wife/gf’s horrifying death. In his head he’s probably thinking that’d be Kazuki and Miri if he doesn’t quit while they’re ahead. Alive and miserable, or dead while holding onto hopeless situations?
Kazuki.....idek.....just Kazuki baby I’m so sorry

Rei, desperately fighting to keep his daughter.
Tumblr media
Rei, the man who reluctantly agreed to be Miri's father, the one finding any reason for her to stay with her papas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rei, the man who was a robot and never showed any emotion now enraged to learn that the mother who abandoned his daughter is now demanding to take her back, blackmailing them with the knowledge of their employment.
Rei, the man who, just a year ago, wasn't even properly equipped to take care of a cat.
Tumblr media
Rei, the man who now adores and loves Miri and doesn't want to lose her and is falling apart inside at having to let her go.
Rei, who, alongside Kazuki, put aside their selfish desires to keep Miri in their custody and instead released her to her mother for her own safety, knowing now that there was a target on their backs that could get themselves and Miri killed. And while not the most ideal scenario, it was her best option.
Rei, who learned to be selfless as Miri's father. The man who learned what it meant to love and be loved. The man who built a family and changed for the better, in a way he never thought possible for himself.
I'll never shut up about how heartbroken I am over this episode. If they don't find their happiness with Miri again I'm never trusting another anime again.

Buddy Daddies AU where Misaki and Kazuki/Rei alternate weeks with Miri like a divorced couple.
The daycare moms think they’re actually divorced because Misaki and Kazuki seem to always be trying to passively-aggressively one-up each other about parenting. Miri doesn’t clear anything up by adding that Santa gave her a papa for Christmas. Rei is there.

Yeah, something about Misaki crying and saying sorry for leaving Miri alone when Miri was telling her how much she loved Papa Rei and Papa Kazuki rubbed me the wrong way.
It's like she wasn't actually listening to a word Miri was saying. Her response to Miri telling her that Rei and Kazuki ARE her papas, and that she loved them was "I'm sorry I made you feel so lonely. But don't worry, I'm going to change."
Nowhere in her rambling did Miri say she was lonely. Nowhere did she imply it either.
It's as if Misaki thinks Miri only cared for Rei and Kazuki because she was lonely due to the fact that Misaki wasn't there. As if Rei and Kazuki were just placeholders for an "actual" family. A placeholder for Miri's "actual" parents. And it's implied by Misaki that it's her. Why? Cause she's related to Miri by blood, and Kazuki and Rei are not, of course. Those two aren't your real papas, she says, even though they raised you for an entire year, took responsibility when I tossed you away.
It did make me mad, I'm not going to lie. Beyond the fact that this is such a common fucking thing for unconventional families to hear - oh you're not real family, you don't share genetics, or a real family needs a mother and father, etc. Etc.-
Kazuki and Rei acted more caring then Misaki had for a majority of the show. And she just. Doesn't seem to see past her own little world to realize that parenthood is not about just blood, nor realize that Miri doesn't want two separate families, she wants everyone she loves together.
I appreciated that she was trying to change for Miri. It shows that she's human, and I'm very glad PA works didn't demonize her. She's an interesting and nuanced character. But this episode didn't make me like her any more. I didn't hate her, even from the beginning I didn't hate her. But I don't like her either.
She still had a long way to go before she could count herself as a good parent. I know people are pissed that they killed her off, but it made sense to me. Because the amount of development she still needs to undergo far outstrips the limited amount of episodes this show has. And the thing is, the show isn't about her. It's about the buddy daddies. The alternative is Miri watching her die of cancer. What were y'all expecting.

Misaki's Lasting Influence on Miri
Occasionally, Miri uses a turn of phrase that surprises the people around her.
For instance, after Kyuu-chan makes her a drink in Episode 5, Miri is overjoyed and says, "It tastes like heaven!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kyuu-chan echoes, "Heaven?"
It's possible that he feels that Miri's praise is overstated; however, he may also be expressing surprise at a four-year-old using such a phrase.
I personally feel that Miri learnt this phrase while observing Misaki. It's possible that Misaki once described a beverage as tasting 'like heaven' and that Miri applied the saying to an appropriate situation.
Then, there's this scene from Episode 8:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miri sighs, "Men are such a mystery," and Kazuki wryly responds, "Where'd you learn that phrase?"
Miri doesn't answer Kazuki's question directly, but she does go on to talk about her mother's duality — how Misaki could seem to be happy but sad at the same time.
Isn't this fascinating? At this point in the story, it's August. Miri has neither seen nor heard from Misaki since December; it's been a solid 8 months since she's had any contact with her mother. Yet, even now, Miri remembers Misaki and appears to embody some of Misaki's habits.
I'm certain that there's some amazing child psychology to discuss here, but alas! I don't know enough about the field to comment confidently. ;-;

in a show where the main theme is "people can always change for the better no matter what circumstances they come from" it's wild to see fans hate misaki and feel zero sympathy for her fate.

Buddy Daddies, ep 11.
Spoilers!
not gonna lie, i didn't expect the episode to go quite the way it did, but like, i AM SO FUCKING HAPPY!?!?
i mean, i wanted Ogino to have his brains blown to bits ngl (i still hope he does by the end of the series, honestly he needs to go, and Rei's asshole dad, too) and I didn't actually expect Misaki to end up like that (so soon, and poor Miri's gonna be so sad), but like
Rei being all "nope. we're keeping Miri, we're raising her, she's ours, fuck anyone else who doesn't think so" is something i didn't think i needed as much as i did and it made me screech like a banshee tbh. and Kazuki laying down the law of the land for their household going forward was also something that had me laughing in tears
what i wanna know is what they plan on doing now, job-wise (obviously kyuu-chan's gonna help, but like, what are they gonna doooooo??), and if they're gonna skip town or just fuck up the organization and then settle back into their lives
(also, Rei was gonna let Kazuki have the apartment, i am grinning like a lunatic, nevermind that the whole scene was heartwrenching)

Rei is the voice of reason in this family idc
I love how when we're first introduced to Rei he's depicted as irresponsible and someone who doesn't really have his life together and Kazuki does. However, we see time and time again that Kazuki can be impulsive and let's his emotions dictate his behavior a lot and Rei is the one who really keeps him in check because actually he's much more put together than he first appears.
Tumblr media
Like when Kazuki is about to throw hands with the bitch that abandoned his daughter and is now demanding to take her back and Rei stops him like: "Hey, I get it but maybe not right here in front of the daycare with all of these parents watching."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or when Kazuki is fuming about the fact that Rei invited Misaki back to their home to discuss and Rei has to remind him that it's the only sensible option. Not to mention that he has to remind Kazuki: "Hey, we may hate her mother but Miri still loves her and it wouldn't be right to disrespect her mother in front of her. We have to be responsible parents, set a good example, and sort this out conscientiously."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or when Kazuki's rage transfers over to Misaki taking over his kitchen and Rei has to remind him that Miri is what's most important here, that's what this is all about, not some bitch we hate heating up some frozen hamburg steaks in our kitchen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While clearly desperate to keep his daughter in his custody, he constantly reminds everyone in the room that Miri is at the center of this and that's what's important. What's best for her, and what will make her happy. Standing up for his 5 year old girl when everyone else is acting a bit selfishly and irrationally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or when they go rock-climbing and Kazuki is losing his mind panicking over the safety of their girl (I lost my mind over him referring to Miri as THEIR girl asldkfjsdfjsaoi yes they are a FAMILY and they are her PAPAS) and Rei has to remind him to breathe and that there are safety precautions in place for all of his concerns. He's just an overprotective papa and Rei is there to remind him that he's just an anxious babygirl.
Tumblr media
And when Kazuki falls apart when Miri can't see him Rei reminds him to make the most of the last of their time together because they will not be regretting their last moments with Miri.
Rei really is out here just protecting the people he loves. And I can't wait to see him betray the organization in ep. 11 you cannot convince me of anything else, these next few episodes will be the downfall of the organization and they will get Miri back.

AU where Misaki, Kazuki and Rei all lived together and raised Miri together. Misaki working some job that is suitable for her health. She would have been able to live her life with her daughter and would have gotten two great friends too. Even better if she made Kazuki and Rei realize they love each other. "Just get married already, you idiots". She would have passed away peacefully like this. But PA works love tragedy. Sigh.
