Gabriel Belmont embarks on a quest to seek the killer of his wife and child. Armed with the “Combat Cross” he will stop at nothing to find the answers he seeks.⁣ ⁣ Visually, Lords is stunning. A vivid color palette paints the supernatural world. Each stage seems plucked from an art book filled with dripping detail. From lush jungles and snow covered villages in the mountains, to dark, haunted demonic castles bathing in moonlight, every level had me aghast at how well the set pieces were crafted. Cut scenes are fluidly animated too. ⁣ ⁣ Take one part God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted, Prince of Persia and a dose of Castlevania and mix them together. Much time will be spent jumping, shimmying and scurrying across broken buildings, crumbling archways and derelict ruins. Many puzzles and riddles prevent one from progression. ⁣ ⁣ When creatures of the night arise, Gabriel has access to an arsenal of combat creations and combos which include both Light and Shadow magic allowing one to perform many bombastic maneuvers. ⁣ ⁣ One of the strongest elements of Lords is the bombastic, fabulously beautiful soundtrack. Tracks such as “Hunting Path”, “Cornell”, “Quest”, “The Evil Butcher”, “Belmont’s Theme” and “Underground Cave” have gravitas and emotion which give strong energy during key points of both gameplay and story. Some of my absolute favorites being “Waterfall of Agitha”, “Castle Hall”, “Gabriel”, “The Dead Bog”, “Waking Dream” and “Crow Witch Malphas”.⁣ ⁣ While it was an enjoyable experience overall, there were many moments that completely took me out gaming bliss and into frustration. Bizarre checkpoints, random difficulty spikes, confusing level progression, chunky / clunky combat lag and constant parkour sections padded the overall length. Despite all that, if you can look past these flaws, there is a sublime gem with incredible moments.
