Alright, I’ve seen several articles and posts lately asking what it is about straight woman shipping gay male couples, and I have to say I’m guilty. I’m going to try to explain.

It’s not a gay porn thing or even about sex at all. It’s many things, but I think it boils down to the relationships and how they are with each other. I realized there are straight ships (like Monica and Chandler and Leslie and Ben are the two that pop into my head) that I have too, and I love them for the same reason. Support & friendship.

These couples are not just a couple. They support each other completely. They are each other’s best friend. They make each other better. It’s a true partnership. They truly look out for each other and have their back.

I think most of the stories I seek out show this. I believe that many past movies and films like to depict guys as masculine and tough, and although a woman appreciates this quality in a man, I think what she really craves is a man who can share his feelings and show vulnerability occasionally. Not all the time. But as a woman, I know safety is so much more than just feeling like my significant other can protect me if there’s a break-in. I want to feel safe if I have a break down. I want to feel safe to express or share when I’m not feeling strong, but I want him to do the same. I want my partner to talk to me, hold me, hug me, and that be enough. I don’t want to be propositioned for sex afterward. Lol.

I think what I love about these characters is that they talk about the hard stuff and they’ve made it clear that they are going to love each other through all of it. They are going to support their other half with the things that maybe others have found unloveable or maybe even things they are insecure about regarding themselves.

To me, these relationships are beautiful. They are not perfect. The characters are flawed, and I like them that way. Blaine has depression as does Charlie. TK is a former addict. Kurt has major anxiety. Nick and Carlos both have insecurities about their identities and struggle with self acceptance. But they share these struggles. They allow one another to fall apart and support them when they need it most, like Carlos calling TK’s sponsor when he realized he wasn’t the person TK needed. Kurt pushed Blaine to talk about when he was insecure about his weight gain. And Charlie never pushed Nick to come out. I think that’s what I find beautiful. Nick does the same for Charlie in season 2, but I’m not posting spoilers. Lol

My favorite fics about these couples are not the ones that are pure smut. They go deeper. Ok, that sounds dirty. Lol. My favorite stories let them talk, hold one another’s hand, and just be there when the other needs it. Don’t get me wrong. I won’t pretend I skip over all the smut. Lol. I used to when I first started reading it. But I think what I started to realize was it’s true when they say that what women really crave is not sex but intimacy. There’s a difference.

I like reading about those couples that share that connection. That can have a conversation without saying a word (but they don’t rely on that.) Those conversations have happened and these characters will continue to talk through insecurities and feelings in their relationship. Because that’s what they have is a real relationship; a true connection; real intimacy.

You may say it’s a fetish. But maybe it’s deeper than that. Maybe we’re craving this. I love the touches, the looks, the hugs, the reassurance. It’s not about the kisses or sex. It’s the connection.

I liked OFMD and I'm sad it's not getting renewed, but I agree that the fandom was especially toxic, even by the standards of currently popular slash-heavy fandoms. I wanted to read fic after s1 ended the way it did, and I read a little bit, but along with it having all the tropes that I can't stand in a lot of what is currently big with the MSF crowd (and that I'd been happy to have a reprieve from in my current main M/M fandom), the toxicity of the online fandom discourse made me quickly realize it was one that I was going to discuss among my current-friends-from-other-fandoms who also watched it, and my sister who watches it, and pretty much ignore the rest of the Internet. It was such a perfect storm of everything awful, from people who are overly invested in it to an unhealthy degree (I think I realized I wasn't gonna be active in the larger fandom around a month or so before the s2 renewal announcement, when I saw earnest PSA tweets telling people to "stop threatening suicide in HBO's replies if they don't renew OFMD"), to bombarding and parasocial obsessions with the creators and actors, to all the classic "anti" and purity police crap that plagues anything that gets popular on here.

The fandom it reminds me the most of, honestly, is Yuri on Ice fandom at its peak in early-mid 2017. Again, a show I love, but a fandom I absolutely do not miss. In some ways they are kind of similar shows: ones with canon M/M romances where they were not billed as that, and they were hinted from early on but people didn't trust it due to years of dealing with queerbaiting, where that sort of thing slowly crept up on people and then became the defining feature of how it was discussed everywhere. I wonder if there's a particular level of insanity that that type of thing breeds in its fans - or maybe, more broadly, "canon M/M with a large female fanbase." Like, you don't see this kind of thing in canon M/M stuff that's mostly watched by queer men rather than women, but there are shades of the insanity I also remember from Glee fandom (I was more active on the F/F side of things there, which had its own unhinged drama, but the Klaine vs. anti-Klaine stuff was so explosive that it was hard not to notice it if you were anywhere in that fandom, like a mushroom cloud in the distance). But YOI and OFMD do seem very... singular in the particular kind of obsession that they generate.

And I really wish people would shape the fuck up, because if they're going to act like this over and over again, that's just going to de-incentivize showrunners to make shows like this for that audience.

Driving Con O'Neill off Twitter was one of the worst parts of it, too. There was something so refreshingly earnest about how much he embraced the fandom, even the weirdest parts - saying with regard to NSFW fanart that "art is art" and retweeting stuff like his character in a crop-top that said "babygirl." It was so nice to see an actor who didn't usually have that kind of following embrace it wholeheartedly rather than steering clear. ....And then people had to be awful and creepy and obsessive and he left Twitter. I bet he's going to be a lot more skeptical of dealing with fans in the future!

It's not just the canon m/m aspect: it's the wholesomeness.

Yes, yes, they're all evil pirates, I agree, but watching S1 did give me the feeling of something that was supposed to be very progressive and light-hearted in particular ways. I don't think that's bad, but it does tend to attract some very over-sensitive fans with some very rigid expectations.

It's sadly par for the course that one of the random side character actors is the fun one and people are jackasses and desperately want the leads they ship to be the fandomy ones and/or just start creeping on any actor they can get a reaction from.

You may have answered this a hundred times before, if so, point me to your previous answers! How would you have improved Kurt’s story in canon? What are the major things you would have changed, and some of the niggles and minor things that drive you mad?

Hi! You know - I don't mind getting these kinds of questions again. My answers tend to change as the years pass.

I'm not sure if there's anything major I'd change? I don't mind the overall structure of his story (@snarkyhag - omg, I used the word 'structure' for the first time in forever, feels nice, lol.) But Glee has very jaggedy story telling, in that it does highs and lows but doesn't do details or in-betweens very well.

I think his arcs in Season 1 and 2 are pretty well done, and despite me always wanting /more/ - the show was about an ensemble, and he did relatively well. I really have no complaints there.

In Season 3, I would have liked his story to be less attached to Rachel and more on an individual path. Everything that happens in his story line (that isn't related to Blaine) is a consequence or set up of Rachel's story line, and it's maddening. I don't mind that he doesn't get into NYADA -- I wish he would have stayed out, tbh, but the narrative around him getting or not getting in should have been devoid of what Rachel's story needed to be.

I also wish he and Blaine had had more intimate moments -- I don't mean, necessarily, kissing/sex/romance -- but more moments where the two of them are just them together, in a more relaxed way. Hard to do in a school setting, sure, but things like the missing Box Scene from the Christmas episode sprinkled in more often would have been nice.

Of course - I would have loved so much more in Season 4. More fall out from the Break Up. More of Kurt exploring New York City. It would have been nice to see Adam developed as a real relationship for Kurt. Just seeing more of how he felt, and how he was struggling with moving, and being in a new city, and leaving friends and family, and missing Blaine, etc, etc. There's such a rich story there -- but the show, ultimately, was about a high school glee club, not up and coming college kids, and of course, Kurt's story still ended up tied in to Rachel's. (Of course - on the flip side Season 4 gives us such rich material to fanfic around -- so much good fic arose out of this era.)

Season 5 is hard to articulate - there is such a complex variety of things going on - with Finn's Death, the engagement, and all of Rachel and Santana. I wish Kurt would have more of his own individual story line. I know he got the band and Elliott - but what does he really want to do with his life? Again, I do wish we had Glee - the College Years for the full season.

I love the NYC arc - and the exploration of the Klaine dynamic, but I would have seen more the highs there, too. I realize TV needs conflict, and the writers knew where they were going with the story, but I don't think the June story line necessarily worked now that I'm this far out, and I would have liked to see them more navigate the ins and outs of a relationship.

Season 6 I would change less than you think. My biggest thing is that I'd rewrite the entire Klaine part of the Wedding episode. Kurt needs a catalyst (probably the one thing that still bugs me the most) to run back - the writing is just awkward.

But also - Kurt and Blaine don't get a single, private conversation between getting back together and the locker scene in Dreams Come True. I realize it's more about the show winding down - and that scene is essentially their 'happily ever after' moment, but it would have been nice for the show let Kurt (and Blaine) reflect on marriage and taking that next step. But also, having a conversation about how their lives are moving forward when back in New York.

The epilogue was nice, but I would have moved it farther than five years -- and I'm somewhat indifferent about them having kids, but twenty-six feels young for them being dads.

Idk, those are the major things. There are episode to episode minor-ish things, too, I guess. Like why did Kurt give back the tape in Michael? Why did he have to be a jerk to Quinn in On My Way? Stuff like that where I don't agree on the writers' charactierizations.

Good evening,

I need some advice about a popular fic. I remember years ago reading Political Romance. I recently started from the beginning (and forgot so much of it). I’m at the part where Blaine and Kurt are getting ready to go back home after hiding out in a beautiful house for a week. They’re 18, Blaine’s dad attacked him because of the newspaper article. Which was Kurt’s fault actually.

Spoiler Alert: I remember from years ago, the darkness is different now, more powerful. Kurt wanting to go to Paris for work or school, leaving Blaine behind. Knowing this is dangerous for Blaine. He’s got to have Kurt. Blaine looked across the cafe at a man who was also eyeing him. I stopped here. (Many years ago).

My question is: Does Blaine cheats? I can’t take it. I really want to finish reading this story. It took me years to pick this back up again. Thank you!

It's been many years since I read it, but if I remember correctly, Blaine does not cheat on Kurt - ever. Am I right, @yadivagirl ? ~Lynne

2. I think maybe the gif of them kissing. I really like how I made it look like them even though I mostly rotoscoped (that was very difficult oml). It also took me sooo long to do so, just for that, it deserves a spot in my top 5 lol.

3. The christmas special holiday chalet. I loved doing this one. I had never made a klaine comic before so that makes it special. Also, extraordinary merry christmas is my favourite glee episode so I was obsessed with this opportunity! And I loved drawing Blaine's silly expressions ^^

4. The Romeo and Juliet painting. I loved doing the study of the actual painting and I’m very proud of the atmosphere and colours in this work. Also, I am a mess for schmoopy romance stuff so <3333

5. okay this is really difficult because there is still a few that I feel like deserve a spot, but I think I’m going with the first proper fanart I posted on tumblr that I was actually proud of. The pose turned out so well and I loved their colour-coordinated outfits. When I look back at it I know it's not perfect, but it has a special place in my heart.
