I would love opinions on kanji from learners:

do you think its worthwhile to learn:

 the meaning of kanji but not the readings starting out - then learning the readings with words.

or the meaning and one to two readings per kanji - then learn the remaining readings with words.

this is assuming you do not learn much vocabulary, or grammar, until you’ve learned a decent amount of kanji (500 before you start grammar, vocabulary at all).

I’m curious what opinions are for this. Because Wanikani’s creator’s website encourages learning meanings and readings IMMEDIATELY with kanji, and starting grammar/vocabulary after you’ve learned a large number of kanji (at least 500). Then continuing, to finish learning about 2,000 kanji within the first year ideally. (https://www.tofugu.com/learn-japanese/). Their website claimed to only learn kanji Meanings is to only do the easiest 20% of learning kanji - which implied to me they see learning meaning only as not enough to be helpful. I would guess by this method, kanji would take longer (as would that entire beginner stage), but when you learned words you would usually have some guess at pronunciation (so vocabulary you would have less ambiguity). 

This is an interesting take to me, because the other prevailing opinion is one mia/Refold has (and most Hesig’s Remember the Kanji book users share) - that a person should learn the meanings of kanji first, and then learn readings with vocabulary. Refold specifically thinks a learner should learn 500-1000 kanji meanings before diving into grammar/vocab more. However, learning just meanings means general projections tend to suggest it takes 2 months to learn 2,000 kanji meanings (if you’re super diligent), to 6 months. So I imagine the idea is you save some time not memorizing the readings, and plan to learn the readings with vocabulary (so maybe vocabulary takes a bit longer?). I imagine the idea with this plan is to broaden general understanding - you can quickly cover enough kanji to get an overall idea of the meaning of them when you start learning vocabulary/have meaning to connect new words to. But you won’t have a guess at how to pronounce new words necessarily - you will need to learn that word by word until you pick up some of the common kanji readings from doing that. Aka its like learning 2000 words in 4 months (which i did for chinese lol) - not long enough to ‘memorize’ them perfectly, but enough exposure that I could recognize enough words to now find shows and some books comprehensible. 

 I’ve always sort of felt... both were useful? As a big hoop for learners seems to be simply recognizing the meaning of kanji. For me, the other big hoops always been their pronunciation... I learned kanji with common readings though, when I used Genki I and a few other books... and while it helped, I still constantly found myself going ??? with every new word and new reading. Learning common readings from my Genki I vocabulary didn’t necessarily help me when I ran into the kanji in other contexts... at least not any more than I would imagine learning readings from vocabulary alone.

(I do personally prefer to learn at least one reading with a kanji though - even when I tried heisig’s method I did that, I looked up an example word. That’s why I like KKLG and japaneseaudiolessons.com’s kanji books - they both cover some readings, sample vocab. But I think that’s mainly just because given the opportunity I WILL waste 1+ years learning only kanji, and that’s not actually words, so the quicker I merge kanji study WITH vocab study the quicker I stop putting everything else on hold while being a perfectionist about kanji remembering...)

Anyway, I’m curious what others think? To me it seems beneficial whether you learn meaning+reading, or just meaning, as preparation before diving into grammar/vocab. Either way, I think the goal would be to get some kanji familiarity so they are more understandable, before learning them in vocabulary context...

A joyful expression of life? The pumpkin can teach us much. So now that I have focused here and now, I sit on my yoga mat, turn on some beautiful music and stretch the aches from my body and mind.
