{{People still whining about Suzume and her relationship with Kiyomaro in the Gash Bell canon. Like I give a shit about how Kiyomaro is better off with Megumi? Kiyomaro/Suzume is my Gash Bell! OTP and if KiyoSuzu doesn't happen in the sequel, oh fucking well. I don't give a damn about the canon status these days. Because I am way into my Suzume crossover ships to give a shit. But it'd be nice if KiyoSuzu was canon so it'd be a HUGE fuck you to the ones who bashed on Suzume and the KiyoSuzu pairing. Besides that, I'd have to blame the anime for fucking up Suzume's character in the first place. The anime portrayal of Suzume was the reason why she was hated. I will NEVER forgive the anime writers for what they've done to her during the London arc in the anime.}}

Another masterful aspect I love about Konjiki no Gash!! is that Makoto Raiku is so patient in building up to his storytelling pay-offs.
He keeps some cards close to his chest, waiting for the last possible moment to reveal them, and in the interim, seeds quiet hints of these developments early on in the narrative.
One of the biggest examples, I feel, is Umagon’s relationship with Gash in the makai. While it is implied that Umagon knows Gash before they meet in the human world, it is only confirmed in Ch. 276, when Gash has his memories returned by Zeon (as Umagon has never been able to speak anything beyond “Meru meru me”.)
At first glance, this seems like a retrospective explanation of why Umagon followed Gash so closely ever since Ch. 56. But - it turns out that Raiku is saving up the final revelation for Ch. 311, when Umagon’s book is burned. Umagon is so incredibly proud to carry a true friend on his back, and this late-stage reveal makes every moment we’ve experienced between them feel all the sweeter.
Raiku also employs the power of continuity - and strong parallels - for the friendship/relationship between Kiyomaro and Suzume.
While Kiyomaro first sees Suzume as someone to protect, his focus is more on what he can do for her. That is also why he comments that there’s nothing redeeming about her at all, during the battle with Robnos (Ch. 30).
Fast forward to the time where he is dying from Riou’s attacks, however, he starts to think more about what she has done for him - and at a point in his life where there was arguably nothing redeeming about him (Ch. 214).
It’s nothing that Kiyomaro doesn’t already know. After all, Suzume’s classroom kindnesses precedes even Gash’s entry into his life. Yet, the way Kiyomaro perceives his own memories completely shifts.
It’s a startling testament to Kiyomaro’s maturation - as his propensity for gratitude increases, his ability to appreciate Suzume also grows.
To go from this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, all the way to this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The transition from a publicly communicated grouse to a private, deeply felt acknowledgement —
I think Raiku draws these parallels between Kiyomaro’s personal flashbacks, to show us just how much he has truly grown :-)

The Olympics have the tantalizing potential to expand the types of people we see as American, if we tell the stories of its athletes carefully. And part of my joy in watching them came from the rare pleasure of seeing these stories told as American narratives, with details that could be plucked from my own life.
It feels ridiculous that I see myself in these highly disciplined and supremely athletic Asian Americans, especially given how much barbecue I ate last Saturday. But there's something undeniably familiar in their stories — their families.
After Kim won the gold, there was a moment in the NBC broadcast before the medal ceremony when she wandered around looking for her family, avoiding a gaggle of cameras. "Can we get my parents here?" she said, wanting to celebrate the win with the people who mattered to her most.
It was there, in the dead time between the competition and the ceremony, at an overheard bit of dialogue, that I was most overcome.
Jong Jin Kim arrived at Los Angeles International Airport in 1982 with $800 and an English-Korean dictionary. To launch Kim's snowboarding career, he would drive five hours round trip every week, carrying his sleeping daughter from her bed to his car.
I am similarly overcome when I think of Nagasu's parents working the dinner rush at Restaurant Kiyosuzu the night their daughter landed a triple axel and made Olympic history, and Vincent Zhou's mom quitting her job to move to Southern California in an apartment that had no water or heat to help her son manage his figure skating career.
Their stories reminded me of how my parents rarely verbalize their love — rather, they submerge me in it. In place of words, they offer a blind and bottomless sacrifice. It is a debt that I don't always know how to repay.
But during the Olympics, I can watch these athletes make their parents' sacrifices made worthwhile in a single impossible moment. After watching Nagasu, I couldn't help but wonder what journalism's version of a triple axel would be, and how I could accomplish it.

Mirai Nagasu Says Her Parents' Hard Work In Restaurant Inspires Her Discipline On Ice

Mirai Nagasu Says Her Parents' Hard Work In Restaurant Inspires Her Discipline On Ice
It’s no secret figure skater Mirai Nagasu is a hard worker. And the Olympian says the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Nagasu, who became the first American woman to land a triple axel at the Winter Games, spent much of her childhood at her parents’ sushi restaurant in Arcadia, California. She even slept in the establishment many nights as her parents worked.
During that time, she picked up some important life skills.
“I have a great work ethic because I’ve watched my parents work super hard,” the figure skater said, according to The Washington Post.
She added, “I’m also great at dishwashing because of the restaurant, as well!”
Nagasu’s father Kiyoto refused to take vacations, missing many of the skater’s competitions. The Los Angeles Times noted that Kiyoto refrained from taking time off since closing the restaurant would mean, his employees would go without pay. In fact, when the skater performed her historic triple axel, the parents were working the dinner rush at their restaurant, Kiyosuzu. Mirai’s jump helped propel Team USA to a bronze medal in skating. Ikuko, the skater’s mother, told USA Today Sports that they’d watch her performance later that night on DVR.

The 24-year-old’s credits her parents’ drive as her inspiration.
“Wow, can you believe it? Her child wins a medal and she’s still here — working, working,” patron Helen Lee told The Los Angeles Times. “It’s surprising, but I really respect that she stays with her responsibilities, running a business.”
The couple did make a rare exception to their work schedule for the later portion of their daughter’s performances in the Olympics.
“The business is important, but it is special to be able to watch Mirai,” Ikuko told USA Today. “We will shut the restaurant, go quickly, and come back quickly.”
The 24-year-old’s credits her parents’ drive as her inspiration. And it’s obvious to her team members too. Vincent Zhou, who became the first skater to land a quad lutz at the Olympics, described Nagasu as “the hardest worker I know.”
“She’ll do triple axels after triple axels until [coach Tom Zakrajsek] has to drag her off the ice,” he told The New York Times, commenting on her practices. “She’s incredible. She will skate 17,635 long programs and then do a short program every single day.”
From the restaurant to the ice rink, Mirai has come a long way thanks to her parents’ values.
“As a kid, she used to play in the back room,” Fiona Lee, another patron, told the Los Angeles Times. “When we saw her on TV, I said, ‘Oh my God, the little girl came out of the back room and is now in the Olympics.’”

Japanese food at Sushi Kiyosuzu in Arcadia has an Olympic connection
#Washoku #Sushi [San Gabriel Valley Tribune]Like a lot of folks — or, at least, a fair number — I dropped by Sushi Kiyosuzu, a modest Japanese restaurant on Baldwin Avenue in Arcadia, because of figure skater Mirai Nagasu. Remember Nagasu’s wondrous accomplishment at the 2018 Winter Olympic …

Mirai Nagasu’s parents missed her performance due to work
U.S. figure skater Mirai Nagasu became the first American woman to land a triple axel at the Olympics, but her parents weren’t able to watch it live.
Kiyoto and Ikuko Nagasu run Kiyosuzu, a Japanese restaurant in Arcadia, Calif. Both were too busy with the evening dinner rush to watch their daughter take her turn in the team skate.
“It was so busy at the restaurant so we are waiting to go home and watch (on DVR),” Ikuko told Martin Rogers of USA TODAY Sports. “We are very happy because we heard it went well.”
The restaurant is quite popular locally, and Kiyoto is known as an innovative chef. However, they’ll be closing down the place for the final week of the Games so that they can watch their daughter’s performance during the women’s individual in person.
“The business is important, but it is special to be able to watch Mirai,” Ikuko said. “We will shut the restaurant, go quickly, and come back quickly.”
As the Nagasus undoubtedly know by now, the team skate performance went fantastically, eliciting great reactions from all who witnessed it. All eyes will be on Mirai during the individual program.
