How to Clean Your Kitchen Chimney
A clean kitchen chimney is essential for maintaining good air quality and preventing fire hazards. Grease buildup in the chimney can be a breeding ground for bacteria and can also restrict airflow. Here's a guide to cleaning your kitchen chimney:
Safety First-
Always unplug the chimney from the power outlet before cleaning.
Let the chimney cool down completely before you start cleaning.
What You'll Need:-
Baking soda
White vinegar
Dishwashing liquid
Warm water
Soft sponge or microfiber cloths
Bucket or large tub (optional)
Nylon brush (optional)
Cleaning the Filters:-
Locate and remove the filters. Consult your chimney's manual for specific instructions. Most filters have latches or knobs that need to be released.
Wipe off loose grease. Use paper towels to remove any large chunks of grease from the filters.
Choose your cleaning method:
Baking soda and vinegar: In a large tub or sink, combine hot water with equal parts white vinegar and baking soda. Let the filters soak in this solution for 1-2 hours. This loosens greasy grime.
Dishwashing liquid: Fill a tub with hot water and add a few squirts of dishwashing liquid. Submerge the filters and let them soak for 30 minutes.
Scrub the filters. After soaking, use a soft sponge or a nylon brush (if needed) to scrub away any remaining grease.
Rinse thoroughly. Rinse the filters with clean warm water to remove all cleaning solution and grease.
Dry completely. Let the filters air dry completely before placing them back in the chimney. Never put them back while wet.
Cleaning the Chimney Body:-
Wipe down the exterior. Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe down the outside surfaces of the chimney. You can use a solution of warm water and dishwashing liquid for stubborn grease stains.
Clean the interior. Once the filters are removed, you can wipe down the inside of the chimney with a damp cloth dipped in the vinegar solution. For tougher grease buildup, you can make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to the greasy areas. Let it sit for 15 minutes before wiping it clean with a damp cloth.
Tips:-
Clean your chimney filters at least once a month, or more often if you cook frequently.
You can also use a degreaser spray for stubborn grease buildup on the filters or the chimney body. But ensure the degreaser is suitable for your chimney material (consult the manual).
Consider wearing gloves while cleaning the chimney, especially if using harsh chemicals.
If your chimney has heavy grease buildup or you're uncomfortable cleaning it yourself, you can hire a professional Chimney service near me
By following these simple steps, you can keep your kitchen chimney clean and functioning properly.

Fire Safety Checklist for New Home Buyers
Buying a new home is an exciting milestone in life, but amidst the joy of homeownership, it's crucial not to overlook one essential aspect: fire safety. Every year, countless homes are devastated by fires, leading to property damage, injuries, and even loss of life. As a new homeowner, it's your responsibility to ensure that your family and property are protected from this potential danger. In this comprehensive guide, we'll provide you with a fire safety checklist tailored specifically for new home buyers.
Understanding Fire Hazards
Before diving into specific safety measures, it's essential to understand the common fire hazards present in homes. Electrical malfunctions, kitchen mishaps, heating appliances, and even simple oversights like leaving candles unattended can lead to disastrous consequences. Awareness of these risks is the first step towards effective fire prevention.
Creating an Emergency Plan
One of the most critical aspects of fire safety is having a well-thought-out emergency plan in place. Sit down with your family members and discuss the fastest routes to exit each room in the house. Designate a meeting point outside, away from the home, where everyone can gather in the event of a fire. Regularly practice fire drills to ensure that everyone knows what to do in an emergency.
Installing Smoke Detectors
Smoke detectors are your first line of defense against fires, alerting you to potential danger before it escalates. Make sure to install smoke detectors on every level of your home, including inside bedrooms and near sleeping areas. Test them regularly and replace batteries at least once a year. Additionally, consider upgrading to interconnected smoke detectors, so if one alarm is triggered, they all sound.
Fire Extinguishers
While smoke detectors are essential for early detection, having fire extinguishers on hand can help you contain small fires before they spread. Make sure to have at least one fire extinguisher on each level of your home, with additional units in high-risk areas like the kitchen and garage. Familiarize yourself with the different types of fire extinguishers and their appropriate uses, such as Class A for ordinary combustibles and Class B for flammable liquids.
Kitchen Safety
The kitchen is one of the most common areas for fires to start, making kitchen safety practices crucial for every homeowner. Never leave cooking unattended, and keep flammable objects like dish towels and oven mitts away from heat sources. Invest in a kitchen fire extinguisher and a fire blanket for added protection. Regularly clean your stove and oven to prevent grease buildup, which can ignite and cause a fire.
Electrical Safety
Faulty wiring and overloaded circuits are significant contributors to residential fires. During the home buying process, have a qualified electrician inspect the electrical system to ensure it meets safety standards. Avoid using extension cords as permanent solutions and never overload outlets or power strips. If you notice any signs of electrical problems, such as flickering lights or sparking outlets, address them immediately.
Heating Safety
As temperatures drop, many homeowners rely on heating appliances to stay warm, but improper use can pose significant fire risks. Keep portable heaters at least three feet away from anything flammable, including furniture, curtains, and bedding. Schedule regular maintenance for your heating system, including furnace inspections and chimney cleanings, to ensure it operates safely and efficiently.
Candle Safety
Candles can create a cozy ambiance, but they also pose a significant fire hazard if not used carefully. Always place candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces, away from flammable materials and drafts. Never leave candles burning unattended, and extinguish them before leaving the room or going to bed. Consider using flameless LED candles as a safer alternative, especially if you have pets or small children.
Children and Fire Safety
Educating children about fire safety is crucial for their well-being and the security of your home. Teach them the importance of never playing with matches or lighters and what to do if they encounter a fire. Install childproof locks on cabinets containing hazardous materials like cleaning products and lighters. Practice fire drills with your children so they know how to react in an emergency.
Pet Safety
Pets are beloved members of the family, but they can also inadvertently cause fires if left unsupervised. Keep candles, space heaters, and other potential hazards out of reach of curious pets. Invest in pet-specific fire safety products, such as window decals to alert firefighters to the presence of pets inside the home. Include your pets in your fire escape plan, ensuring that you have a plan for their evacuation in case of emergency.
Regular Inspections
Regular inspections are essential for maintaining a safe living environment and preventing potential fire hazards. Schedule annual inspections for your heating system, electrical wiring, and chimney. Check smoke detectors and fire extinguishers monthly to ensure they are in working condition. Keep an eye out for signs of wear and tear, such as frayed wires or corroded outlets, and address them promptly.
Community Resources
Take advantage of the resources available in your community to enhance your fire safety knowledge and preparedness. Contact your local fire department to inquire about fire safety workshops, CPR training, and home safety inspections. Many fire departments offer free smoke detectors and installation services to residents, helping ensure that every home is adequately protected.
Insurance Coverage
While prevention is key, it's also essential to be prepared for the unexpected by having adequate insurance coverage. Review your homeowner's insurance policy to understand what is and isn't covered in the event of a fire. Consider purchasing additional coverage for items like valuable possessions and temporary housing expenses. Keep a detailed inventory of your belongings to streamline the claims process in case of loss.
Conclusion
Residential Fire protection is a critical aspect of homeownership that should never be overlooked. By following the comprehensive checklist outlined in this guide, new home buyers can significantly reduce the risk of fire-related incidents and protect their families and property. Remember, prioritizing fire safety isn't just about being prepared for emergencies—it's about creating a secure and peace-of-mind environment for you and your loved ones.

Best Way to clean your chimney filters
Cleaning a kitchen chimney is a time-consuming task and most of us like to avoid it as much as possible. But on the other hand, we know that chimney cleaning is important for its smooth working too. The smoke produced from cooking makes the chimney filters greasy and sticky. Normally hoods have mesh or baffle filters that are removable and can be cleaned easily. In case you are using Chimney on recirculation mode then you must be using charcoal filters, these cannot be cleaned and need to be replaced every 3-4 months based on usage. Coming to cleaning chimney filters, it can be easily done by yourself with the help of some basic ingredients that can be found on your kitchen. In case if you are using a filterless auto clean chimney, then also cleaning the mesh is required. Just a quick swipe with a damp cloth would be enough. Ways to clean the chimney filters: Using dishwashing liquid: Remove the filters from the hood and apply some dishwashing liquid to them. Take hot boiling water in a tub deep enough to immerse the filters. Leave them for around an hour or two. After a while clean the filters using a non-abrasive scrub. Let them dry and they are ready to be placed in the chimney. Using baking soda & vinegar: You will need some kitchen supplies like baking soda, vinegar, and salt. Put the filters into a tub and pour boiling hot water. Add 2-3 tbsp of baking soda, salt and a cup of vinegar. Let them soak for a while and then clean properly. Using caustic soda: Similar to the above method, take a tray or tub, sprinkle the caustic soda evenly over the filters and then pour boiling hot water. Take proper precaution as fumes will appear once you pour the water. Let it rest for an hour or two, rinse with clean water and they are ready to be fitted again once dried. Cleaning the exteriors of the hood: You can use a damp soft cloth to clean the exterior body of the chimney. In case the grime is more you can use some cleaning detergent and then wipe clean with a clean cloth. Note: Don’t forget to take necessary care and refer the product manual before trying any of the given ways.

December 25th. Walking the streets on a dark, cold Christmas night on the way to the bar. The smell of chimney smoke, smog & piss filling the air. People getting in fights on every corner, crime everywhere you look, and no one bats an eye. Never a dull night in Phorrea.
Sitting at the bar before starting the next job. Liquid courage & a stogie before dealing with another case. A necessary evil. Every cop is dirtier than a baby’s diaper in the mud, so I pick up the slack. Good ole supply & demand. At least it pays well. Time to get moving.
I arrive at the address provided by the client. A small, well-decorated apartment. Medical books on the shelves & dexterity tools on the desk. The tenant was either a surgical student or had weird collecting habits. Walking into the kitchen, traces of blood & mud are found.
I go to the bedroom to find it untouched. It looks like a young woman lives here. I hate these kinds of cases. It takes me to that dark place. Back to that night. It’s like a hole I can’t climb out of –
I shake it off & focus.
The trail of mud particles shows the scuffle started at the front door & ended in the kitchen where there are traces of blood. The blood is dried & looks a few days old. Whoever did this had time to come back & try to clean up the mess left behind.
This is bush league. Sloppy. This is the work of some low-level cat, no way this was a professional. Not that I can say much, I’m no professional. I’m as close to a low-level detective as one can be. Luckily, I have a brain that works sometimes, not that it does me any favors.
I search the kitchen drawers & find a roll of clear packing tape. I tear a piece off & use it to grab the dirt particles from the carpet. I take the tape back to the kitchen & grab a glass from the cabinet to get a better look at the dirt. Like I said, my brain works sometimes.
I take one look at the clay-colored dirt & there is only one place in this shithole city it could come from.
The docks. A criminal’s wet dream.
A necropolis of bones & souls of those unfortunate enough to come across some of the crazy pricks this city hosts.
This well has run dry. Time to head to the docks.
As I head out the door, I notice an envelope sitting on an accent table. The senders name & address has been torn off; the letter taken. On the top right corner of the envelope is a familiar crest.
My eyes go wide; I freeze. I’m seething. Consumed with rage. All of those emotions rushing back. I can’t move. I can’t breathe. I’m about to lose it. It’s been 15 years since –
(STOP! BREATHE! NOW’S NOT THE TIME! SHAKE IT OFF MARTIN! FOCUS!)
I stop. I breathe. I focus.
I move towards the door & leave the apartment. I get in the car & I light a cancer stick. It helps calm the devil. Medication & therapy could fix it, but with no insurance, it’s nothing but a pipe dream. I’ll let the stick will take me first.
As I leave the scene, I look in the rearview mirror & see a “Joe’s Cleaning Service” van pull up. Everyone in this town knows Joe’s Cleaning Service is a front for the mob. Professional cleaners for a professional price. Only City Hall crooks could afford a service like that.
Everyone in this town is mobbed up. The police, the lawyers, the DA, and the mob boss himself, Mr. Harvey Short, the Mayor. It’s why I have a job doing this. Anytime something big or little is called in, it’s ignored & brushed under the rug & I pick up the slack.
Halfway to the docks.
(It’s time.)
Investigating that young woman’s apartment reminded me of what happened 15 years ago. It still lives in my head. No matter what I do, it never goes away. Every case, it’s as vivid as a theater screen. My poor angel. If only I got home sooner.
This town. It can change you in a heartbeat.
There is no law, no order. Everyone is their own judge, jury, & executioner. It’s why any case I solve, the criminal doesn’t get a second chance. I am the executioner. The completely incompetent, incredibly sloppy executioner.
I guess that’s why I’ve been given the moniker, “The Lethal Man.”
I don’t care much for it, but it seems to have a boogeyman effect on the trash that live in this town. All I care about is taking out the trash & providing closure to those who need it. Getting paid is a bonus.
Finally, I pull up to the docks. I step out of the car & I’m hit with the smell of old faithful, death & despair. There is no life at the docks. No spirit, no hope. The only guarantee at the docks is finding dead bodies & a stench that will take weeks to remove from your clothes.
As I make my way to the boardwalk, I take in the only impressive part of this dump. Makeshift shops built out of old shipping containers. Drug dens, black-market bodegas, brothels, gambling; if you want it, the docks have it. You’ll pay for a good time with your life.
As I walk down the boardwalk, I hear the sound of & see container doors closing. A normal occurrence for me. It’s times like this I enjoy that I have a reputation that no one likes to challenge. Makes it easy to get through hell pits like the docks.
I reach the end of the boardwalk & take a look behind me. I lock eyes with a sole straggler who proceeds to bang on a container door frantically. He’s screaming, “LET ME IN! LET ME IN!”
The look of fear in his eyes as he stared down the boogeyman. It’s like a drug. It fuels me.
I turn the corner to make my way to the port. Most of the investigations I’ve solved have ended with a body being found in the harbor, so when a case leads me to the docks, it’s the first place I check. I stop to light a butt & it begins to rain. An all too familiar setting.
The rain puts out my match & destroys my last cigarette. As I throw it to the ground, I hear the loud metal grind of the container crane moving. I turn around and look up to find a shocking clue to the investigation.
The young woman!
Hanging from the container, strapped at the wrists by metal chains crying out for help. Similar to how I found my angel all those years ago. My heart rate jumps to 200 bpm in an instant!
I yell out to her, “STAY CALM! I’LL GET YOU DOWN! I PROMISE!”
Flashbacks of that night 15 years ago consume me in a flash.
Getting home late from a shift at the Phorrea police department to find my angel strung up by chains in the kitchen. Eviscerated like an animal in a slaughterhouse. As pale as a ghost.
If only I had left on time. Maybe I could hav –
(WAKE UP, MARTIN! FOCUS!)
I snap out of my haze & book it toward a ladder that would take me up to that storage container. I’ve got to help her. Somehow. Someway. I’ve got to get her down. I’m about 50 yards away from the ladder when suddenly – time stops.
A click. A thud. A crash. Silence.
The crane that – the container that she – had fallen – crashed – it happened in a flash.
She was gone. I couldn’t save her. Just like my angel. Incompetent – sloppy – if had been there sooner – it’s happening again.
I fell to my knees, rain falling on my face in the moonlight. I’m glaring at the moon. Eyes wide, breathing deeply; I feel like I’m going to explode. All of my senses are heightened. It feels like I am trapped in a time loop, being forced to relive that moment.
All of a sudden, in the distance, I hear the splashes of someone running. My neck whips my head around to see a man running away from some barrels nearby, gunning it for the warehouse. I jump up & begin sprinting. My eyes are locked on this man; I have tunnel vision. I’m running faster than ever. Rage has taken over my body. It feels like a superpower.
I feel like I’m being controlled by a motor. As I begin to gain on this scumbag, he turns around to see my eyes stabbing needles through him & screams out for help while trying to run away. It’s no use.
30 yards. “HELP!” 20 yards. “PLEASE HELP!” 10 yards. “OH GOD! HELP!” Zero.
I tackle him to the ground. I turn him over & mount him.
“WHY’D YOU DO IT!?”, I screamed.
“I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING!”, he said in a panic.
“LIAR!” I drove down my fist like a hammer over his nose.
“I’M SORRY!”, he cried out.
“WHY DID YOU KILL HER?!”, I screamed.
“SOMEONE WANTED HER GONE!”, he screamed in a haze.
“WHO?! GIVE ME A NAME!”, I yelled as I raised my other fist.
“I D O N ’ T K N—“, is all that he could say before driving my other fist down.
“LAST CHANCE – GIVE. ME. A NAME!”, I screamed while raising both fists above my head.
“I c a n’ t . – T h e y’ l l k i l l m e.”, he slurred, barely conscious.
(MARTIN! STOP! DON’T DO IT! BREATHE! FOCUS!)
“WRONG. ANSWER!”
I scream at the top of my lungs as I bring down both of my fists AND THEN –
Silence. Everything goes black. Complete darkness.
(Oh, Martin. See? See what happens? Do you see what happens when you can’t control yourself?
When you don’t listen to me? You let the devil in your mind win & now you’ve lost your lead to the bigger fish.
Remember: Stop. Breathe. Focus. Listen to your angel.)
I start to come to. First, my hearing. No sound other than the rain hitting the ground. Then, my vision returns. I’m looking straight up at the night sky, rain falling down on my face. Breathing heavily, my heart rate through the roof. Slowly lowering as I come back to reality.
I raise my hands to see them painted crimson, covered in viscera. I slowly stand to my feet, knowing of the carnage that lay below me. This wasn’t the first time this happened & it won’t be the last. I shake it off & focus. I need to call the client.
A jingle plays.
That man – his phone is ringing. I walked back to where he laid & reached into his pocket. I see the caller ID & my eyes widen. “Maria” is calling. That name – my wife, my angel – this isn’t a coincidence. I take a deep breathe. I focus. I answer the phone.
“Hello, Mr. Williams or should I call you ‘The Lethal Man’?”, the voice on the phone mockingly asked.
I answered with silence.
“I presume you dispatched the owner of this phone. Why, thank you! That must have been very satisfying for you.”, he excitingly proclaimed.
“Why?”, I answered tersely.
“Vengeance, of course! The last time I hired this man for a job he walked away unscathed! I ordered him to gut some nosey cop’s wife because he was poking his nose where it didn’t belong!” he said with malice, cackling like a lunatic.
It felt like my soul had left my body. The man that I am standing over – who murdered that young woman – was the bastard who took my angel away from me 15 years ago. He was hired by this pompous asshole on the phone? Who is this prick?
Suddenly, my phone vibrates.
“Enjoy your payment ‘The Lethal Man’. Oh, didn’t I mention? I’m the one who hired you for this investigation! Isn’t that hilarious?” As he cackles over the phone, I check my phone to see a payment has been sent by an unknown account with a note that reads – “15 years and you’re still coming up short.”
That’s when it clicked. I knew who I was talking to. Thinking back, I should’ve known who it was from the very beginning. Some low-level mobster I busted back when I was working for Phorrea PD. I laughed into the phone.
“WHAT’S SO FUNNY?!” He angrily shouted as I laughed into his ear.
“I’ve let you have your fun over the years, but you are becoming a nuisance to me & my business! THE TAX MAN IS COMING TO COLLECT! Enjoy your last few hours because this entire town is going EAT YOU ALIVE!”
As I let this insufferable man finish screaming & ranting, a calm comes over me. I close my eyes, take a deep breathe, exhale, and focus. Before launching the phone into the harbor & heading back to my car to prepare for the ensuing war, I laugh & say to the man –
“Sounds like a fun time. I’ll be seeing you – real soon – Mr. Mayor.”

Govt. Approved courses for fire and safety guidelines cover specifications like the total potential for structures like theatres or restaurants, for instance. Fire rules may stipulate that a building had to have portable fire extinguishers or surgically corrected fire detection and suppression devices, such as fire sprinklers and fire alarms.
Regular inspections for issues such as accessible fire exits and proper exit signage, operational fire extinguishers of the correct variety placed in central places, and the handling and storage of harmful products might well be performed by the local party responsible for fire safety. A security assessment may result in a notice of appropriate measures and the lockdown of a place until it can be converted into an agreement also with the fire code, depending on local requirements.
Additional fire requirements may very well be enforced by building owners and managers. For example, an office space may establish and prepare some certain staff group to act like its fire fighting force. Building managers are accountable for making sure that buildings respect the fire evacuation guidelines and that amenities including spray fireproofing remain solid. That training may be controlled by fire policies.

The fire code in the United States is a model code that was adopted by the state or local government and is administered by fire prevention officers working for municipal fire departments. It is also referred also as the fire prevention code or the fire safety code. It is a collection of laws and establishes the very minimum standards necessary to prevent fire and explosion dangers put on by handling, storage, or use of hazardous materials or from other particularly major accidents.  It's an update to the building code. The primary goals of the fire code are to avoid fires, guarantee that the required training and equipment will be available, and ensure that the original architectural foundation of the building, including the fundamental layout outlined by the architect, is not jeopardized.
In A Fire Code, A List Of Some Typical Fire And Explosion Hazards.
Model rockets, fireworks, dynamite, mortars, and cannons (licenses for manufacture, storage, transportation, sale, and use)

5 Efficient Earwig Control Tips to Eradicate Them Once and For All
Tumblr media
As small as earwigs are, 6 to 25mm long, they are still unpleasant to encounter. They have wings, which makes it easy for them to prey on smaller insects, and they can pinch you with their forceps. Their pinching is not poisonous, but these pincher bugs carry germs and can still irritate your skin.
Earwigs can spread infections to humans if they graze skin or touch an open wound. This is because they live in the ground, where they can easily come in contact with bacteria and other harmful substances. These bugs thrive on ants and termites, so spotting them in your home likely means that you have other pests, too. Follow these effective tips to keep earwigs outside your living space!
Reduce Moisture in Your Property
These little guys thrive in damp environments, so you'll want to make sure and fix water leaks or other plumbing issues in your home to keep earwigs out. Check for them under your sinks and in your basement often. Take out materials in your yard that hold moisture, like firewood stocks, leaf piles, construction materials and boxes. At the very least make sure to keep any such items covered.
They won't feel welcome in a dry environment, so you can try using fans or dehumidifying products to reduce moisture. These measures will go a long way in keeping earwigs away.
Check for Gaps and Cracks
When it comes to your home, you should always be on the lookout for any gaps or cracks in order not only to keep out pesky bugs but also to ensure that moisture doesn't seep through into walls. You can use liquid cement as a sealant, or alternatively, a caulking gun is a good option to patch up cracks and gaps. In addition, don't forget to do the following:
Check for gaps in doors
Ensure windows that don’t close tightly
Evaluate if there are cracks in the foundation
Look for holes in floors as well
Cover vents with no screens
Watch out for chimneys
youtube
Clean Your Place Often
You can prevent an earwig colony from growing by vacuuming your place often because professional exterminators say that these bugs run away from vacuum cleaners. Also make sure to wipe down kitchen counters and floor often, and empty out your trash bin daily.
Trim Foliage Regularly
Keep your earwigs away by regularly trimming shrubs and other plants in the yard. Make sure to mow your lawn often, as this will disrupt their breeding cycle! Professionals suggest to use dry materials such as pebbles or gravel, instead of the constantly wet mulch.
Seek Professional Pest Control Treatments
If you want to get rid of earwigs for good, contact a professional pest control company so they can help set up a preventive plan to keep pests away. With preventive measures in place, you can ensure earwig colonies won't grow so that you don't have to share your home with them.

If you’re still doing the prompts thing, could you do #20 (“This is, without a doubt, the stupidest plan you’ve ever come up with...I’m in.”) with Buddie from 9-1-1 please? And if not, no worries. :)
Hey there, sorry this took so long. Sometimes my brain just doesn't want to cooperate...
Anyway, hope you enjoy (I changed the prompt a lil)

“Here.” The beer appears in Buck’s peripheral vision, and he reaches for it, fingers slipping in the cool condensation that beads down the side of the bottle.
“Thanks man.” He takes a long sip and stares out into the backyard. “Oh, hey. How were parent teacher interviews yesterday?”
Eddie groans and drops heavily onto the porch swing, throwing his legs up on the railing beside Buck’s.
“They were fine,” he says, taking a long drink from his beer.
“Yeah, that doesn’t sound fine,” Buck says, twisting to face Eddie. “Is everything okay with Chris? Is there—"
“Christopher’s fine.” Eddie cuts Buck off before he can get too worked up. “He’s doing well in school, got lots of friends.”
“Oh.” Buck takes a sip of his own drink. “So, what’s the matter then?”
Eddie pulls his feet from the railing and plants them on the porch.
“He’s got this one teacher, and every time I see her, she’s got something to say about me being a single dad.” Eddie leans forward, his elbows braced on his knees. “Like I’m not good enough for him on my own.”
“You know that’s bullshit,” Buck says. “You’re a great dad.”
Eddie just waves him off.
“Anyway, she was going on about my job and how the long hours aren’t fair on Chris and how alone he is... anyway... Chris told her he’s not alone. He said he’s got me and Carla, Pepa and Abuela and... his Buck.”
“Of course, Eds, you know we’re all there for Chris.”
“I know but, I just—I don’t know why I said it.” Eddie leans back against the swing, staring out into the night.
“Said what?”
“I may have told her we were together...”
The half-mouthful of beer goes down the wrong hole and Buck chokes.
“What?” He wipes his sleeve against his mouth to catch the liquid that’s spilled down his chin.
“It just came out. She kept going on about the type of home environment I was providing, and I know I shouldn’t have let it get to me, but—Chris was so excited. I tried to tell him it wasn’t true—"
“Eddie, it’s fine.” Buck fidgets with the label on his bottle. He can’t quite bring himself to look at his best friend, afraid his face will give him away. It makes sense now why Chris was so happy to see him today, and perhaps why it had taken so long for Eddie to get him into bed. “You need to tell him though.”
“I know.” Eddie sighs and drains his beer. “I honestly didn’t think he’d be excited about the prospect of me dating again. We haven’t really talked about it.”
Buck isn’t excited about the idea of Eddie dating again, dating someone else. He keeps his mouth shut though and finishes his beer. The seeds of a very terrible, stupid plan start to take root in his brain.
“Hey, if uh,” the words stick in his throat. “If you need some time, to tell Chris, I don’t mind pretending for a day or two.” Buck’s heart is pounding so loud in his chest, he wonders if Eddie can hear it too. “Just until you do.”
Eddie laughs, tipping his head back against the seat.
“That is, without a doubt, the stupidest idea you’ve ever come up with...” he says, still chuckling.
“Ha, yeah,” Buck plasters a grin on his face. “Pretty stupid.”
“You know what, I’m in,” Eddie says, regaining his composure. “Just for a day or so. I’ve got the rest of the parent teacher interviews tomorrow night and then I’ll sit Chris down and explain it was a misunderstanding.”
“What about the rest of the team?” Buck asks. “We’ve got a ten-hour shift tomorrow. What happens if they find out?”
“They won’t.” Eddie’s tone is warm and reassuring but Buck shakes his head.
“It just takes one,” he points out. “If Maddie finds out, she’ll tell Chim. And if Chim finds out—” he lets his head tip back with a groan, “—he’ll tell everyone.”
“Is it really that big of a deal?” Eddie asks him, planting his feet back on the porch and sitting up.
Yes, because if people find out that they’re ‘dating’ they’ll have questions and Buck can’t handle that kind of scrutiny, not when he’s already harbouring major feelings for his best friend.
“No,” he says instead. “I guess not. It’s just one day. What’s the worst that could happen?”
~
Buck pulls up at the station bright and early the next morning. He parks beside Eddie’s truck, a smile spreading across his face when he realises he has Chris with him.
“Bucky!” Chris's whole face lights up and he throws his arms around Buck.
“Hey bud.” Buck ruffles the kid’s hair and walks with them towards the firehouse. “What are you doing here?”
“Pepa’s running late,” Eddie explains. “She got caught up in traffic, so she’s going to pick Chris up from here. She shouldn’t be long,” he says, addressing Bobby this time.
“It’s not a problem. You hungry Chris?” Bobby asks, matching Chris’ pace as they head for the stairs. “I’ll see what I can rustle up for breakfast and you can tell me all about school.”
Chris nods along enthusiastically, following on behind Bobby.
“Hey Christopher.” Chimney leans over the balcony rail. “You got any fun stories for us kid?”
“Oh yeah!” Chris hands his dad one of his crutches so he can free up a hand to grip the stair rail. “Did you guys know Dad and Buck are dating?”
Every eye in the building turns to them.
The thing about the station is that it’s never truly quiet. There’s always some noise, some movement, no matter the time of day. But in that moment Buck could have heard a pin drop.
Hen is the first to break the silence.
“Alright, pay up.” She waves her fingers in Chim's face. “Better luck next time boys,” she crows, holding out her hands.
“I definitely heard you say November,” Chimney argues.
“I said, before November.” Hen grins. “It’s before November. Now pay up.”
“You couldn’t have waited just a few more weeks?” Chimney asks them. “Really, is that too much to ask?”
“What is happening right now?” Buck stares at his friends in disbelief. “Have you all been taking bets on us?”
Hen and Chimney share a look. “Uh, yes.”
They say it together, Hen bursting into laughter at the indignation on Buck’s face. “Oh please, you think you’re so hard to read? You wear your heart on your sleeve, Buckaroo. I read you.”
She counts the money she’s won, stuffing the notes into her pocket. “You boys just paid for my anniversary dinner. I can’t wait to tell Karen.” She pauses. “I don’t suppose you two also offer babysitting services?”
Buck bites his lip to hold back the panic clawing at his chest. His gaze flicks to Eddie, laughing and reassuring Chris that he’s not in trouble for spilling the beans. He’s acting like it’s nothing—like their whole team hasn’t been plotting behind their backs.
Eddie had promised that no one else would know, but that had gone down the drain in seconds. And now what? Do they keep up the lie or do they come clean? The idea of telling everyone that it’s not real is worse than knowing they’d been betting on him and Eddie getting together. Or do they already know that too? Maybe that’s the next bet and they’re all just waiting.
“I, uh—” Buck takes a half step back. “I’ll just be back in a minute.”
He doesn’t run for the stairs. He keeps his gait even until he’s at the bottom of the staircase and then he makes his escape to the bathrooms.
Buck spends the rest of the day avoiding the team. Well, avoiding them as much as he is able while still doing his job. While they’re at the station, he finds chores to keep himself busy, ignoring the looks he gets from Hen and Chim and ignoring the friendly teasing that he can’t take a joke.
Avoiding Eddie is the worst. Buck can’t bring himself to do it. He constantly finds himself gravitating back towards his best friend, drawn like a moth to a flame.
Buck keeps waiting for Eddie to pull him aside and ask why he’s not keeping his end of the bargain. Eddie keeps looking over at him, face pinched with an expression Buck can’t quite name. He’s probably pissed Buck couldn’t even keep it up for twenty-four hours, and now they’re both going to look like fools in front of the rest of the team.
~
“Thought I’d find you hiding in here.”
Buck glances up from the bunk to catch Bobby leaning in the doorway.
“I’m not hiding.”
“Good, because lunch is ready.” He goes to leave, then stops, rapping his knuckles against the door frame. “For what it’s worth Buck, we’re happy for you. Both of you.”
“Thanks Bobby.” Buck stands slowly, inhaling deeply. He can do this. He can pretend to be dating Eddie in front of his co-workers while also somehow pretending that he’s not wildly in love with his best friend. He’s got this, no problem.
Buck lets the breath go in a rush.
He’s so fucked.
Everyone’s eyes look up as Buck reaches the kitchen. He’s the last to sit and there’s just the one spare seat left beside Eddie.
As he settles into the chair, Eddie bumps their knees together under the table and offers Buck a reassuring smile.
“So,” Chim says reaching for the salad bowl. “I need details. When did this start?” He gestures between the two of them with the salad tongs before loading up his plate.
“Yeah, how long have you been keeping this from us?” Albert pipes up.
Buck swallows against the lump in his throat. They should have come up with something, just in case, but now they have nothing and—
“It was a few weeks after I got home from the hospital.”
Buck glances across at Eddie, brows knit together in confusion.
“I’d broken up with Ana and Buck was over a lot, helping with Chris,” Eddie explains, accepting a plate from Hen. “There was this one day. Buck had just got back after dropping Chris at school and we realised Chris had forgotten to take this book he’d wanted for show and tell.”
Buck can feel his frown deepening. He remembers this.
“Anyway, Buck wanted to go all the way back to Chris’ school to give it to him. Wouldn’t take no for an answer.” Eddie’s looking at him now, holding Buck’s gaze as he recounts the story. The whole team is looking at them, the heat of their scrutiny makes Buck squirm in his seat. “I said it didn’t matter, Chris could just take it another day, but Buck said—"
“It matters to Chris.” Buck feels his face flush. At the time, Eddie had laughed and said something about Buck being too good for them before Buck had run out of the house clutching the book.
“It just kind of hit me, you know?” Eddie finally looks away, reaching for the bread rolls in the middle of the table. “Just how lucky I am to have him and how much he cares about us and… I kissed him.”
There’s a collective gasp from around the table and all eyes turn back on Buck.
“And what did you do, Buckaroo?” Hen asks, leaning forward in her seat.
“I uh—” Buck glances at Eddie, eyes wide. “I kissed him back?”
“Yeah, and it was about damn time,” Chimney shouts around a mouthful of pasta. “You guys are so cute. It’s disgusting.”
~
The rest of the shift is better after that. Everyone seems satisfied by their story and Buck lets himself fall back into his regular comfortable rhythm, hanging with Eddie between call outs. There is still some awkwardness to it, Buck can’t stop his mind from wandering back to that morning, imagining what it would have been like if it had gone more like Eddie’s story. He’s surprised Eddie even remembered it, it had been just another day between the regular doctor and physical therapy appointments that consumed his every waking minute.
He waits until later that night to say anything. Chris is in bed and they’re back on the porch nursing a beer each.
“Can I, uh, ask you a question?” Buck tears at the label on his bottle. “That thing you said at lunch, about how we got together…” He trails off, not quite sure how to verbalise the whirlwind of feelings it had stirred in him.
“Yeah, well I had to say something convincing,” Eddie says, taking a sip of his beer.
“Oh, right. Yeah.” Buck had spent the whole afternoon thinking that maybe, just maybe his feelings for Eddie weren’t as one-sided as he’d initially thought. This though, this is like a bucket of ice water to the face. “I don’t think I can do this, Eds.”
Eddie’s head jerks up.
“I thought I could pretend, but I can’t.”
“Why did you suggest it then?” Eddie doesn’t sound angry. Buck almost wishes he did, it would be easier if the were both yelling at each other. Anything would be better than the soft disappointment in Eddie’s tone.
“I thought—” Buck takes a breath and tries again. “I wasn’t thinking when I suggested it. I think there was just a part of me that thought that getting to pretend with you was better than nothing. It’s not though, it just made it that much more obvious how much I want this— want us.” Putting down his beer, Buck goes to stand. “I’m sorry. I’m gonna go—”
“Wait. Buck.” Eddie catches his arm. “I should have kissed you.”
“What?”
“Chris’ show and tell. I didn’t kiss you that day, but I wanted to. You were just out the door so damn fast.”
“You wanted to kiss me?”
Eddie pulls him back down onto the swing with a fond eyeroll. “We’re you not listening to my story at lunch?” he asks, voice teasing. “I meant what I said about how it just hit me. You’re amazing Buck, and Chris and I are both so lucky to have someone like you, someone who cares with everything you have. I think I’ve loved you for a while, but that morning I knew.”
“I love you too.” Buck knows he’s grinning like an idiot, but right now he doesn’t care. “I know you didn’t kiss me back then but… you can kiss me now.”
And Eddie does.
It starts off soft and slow—a tentative brushing of their lips, but then as neither of them back off it grows more desperate. Buck curls his fingers in the hem of Eddie’s shirt, pulling him closer and deepening the kiss.
When he finally pulls away, they’re both red-faced and breathing hard.
“So, I guess this means we don’t need to break up,” Buck says with a laugh.
“No,” Eddie agrees. “I plan on keeping you around for a long time.”

The first semester had been and gone by this point. You were settling into life at UC Sunnydale, found your friendship group in Buffy and the others. But one thing you still weren’t accustomed to, was living with Spike. He was hard to get along with at the best of times but living with him was a whole different thing.
He appeared to stay up most of the night and sleep well into the afternoon. He played loud punk music almost every waking hour and he smoked like a chimney. He never appeared to listen to a word you said and he pretty much did the opposite from whatever you said or thought anyway.
It was becoming really hard to live with him. Especially when he seemed to do everything he could to make you want to move out. He found it easier to live alone. To hide in the depths of what he knew than
Because of your current living situation you had started to branch out and pursue some of your interests. It beat staying in all the time and you really wanted to find someone that you could relate to.
You were a fan of musicals and the theatre. Poetry and literature. You liked reading and the way a writer could weave such intricate feelings. Scenes and spoken word able to explain your own feelings better than you ever could.
Your new friends didn’t really share your enthusiasm – even Willow was more into science and computers. Although your friend group were kind enough to listen to the way you spoke about your interests. They certainly didn’t make you feel bad about expressing your passions. But they just didn’t share your love and so you began to try to search out people that you could connect with. On some kind of deeper level.
You had been frequenting different bars that held open mic nights. Watching plays and listening to monologues. Letting the intricate wordplay wash over you. It could make you feel so many emotions. So many feelings were conjured.
Your favourite were the open mic nights. You pretty much never got up yourself, you usually would just listen. You were working yourself up to performing something of your own. You wrote things too it was just a matter of working on your performing skills. You were thinking of joining the clubs, maybe to improve your confidence in your writing. In your performing.
You walked back home from a play you had watched (and cried at) to find Spike sat there scribbling something. It was the first time you had ever seen him actually writing or appearing to do any work.
You were about to make a snide comment about it and then he noticed your presence. He almost jumped five feet in the air in surprise. He then hid the notebook behind his back and immediately got up to leave now you had returned. He left muttering something about you being a nosy bitch.
Spike had taken the opportunity, while he finally had time where he felt comfortable since you had actually left the house for once to write. This was something he didn’t like people knowing about. He wiped his eye as he stormed away. Hoping to God you hadn’t seen that. He couldn’t bear you knowing him that way. Laughing.
It was Friday evening and you had some friends over. There was a sudden knock at the front door. Spike had taken a baseball bat from his room and held it up as if he was ready to swing it.
Willow and Buffy’s eyes bulged at the object in his hand as they peaked from your bedroom doorway. Buffy was pleased they had convinced you to come to self-defence class now.
He walked slowly to the door, meeting you in the hallway skipping happily past him. He grabbed you back looking at you as if you were mad. He was expecting debt collectors. Again.
“Spike, it’s the pizza guy” You moved your shoulder from him before carrying on back to the door with the dollars in your hand, “What is wrong with you?” you muttered.
He scowled, jaw tensing as Buffy and Willow giggled at the way he had been so tense and he stormed away smacking the edge of the bat against the wall in his frustration. Leaving a small hole there.
You brought the pizzas back into your room (so you didn’t have to face spike again) and shared them out with your friends.
After you finished your meal and managed to calm yourselves down from whatever had just happened, talk of course turned back to Spike.
“So how is it… y’know…” Willow asked before mouthing “with Spike”. You hadn’t realised how much built up rage you had inside until you launched into your conversation.
“Well, I can tell you that Hell really is a place on Earth”
“That bad?”
“I can’t believe I’m stuck with him – if I even breath in his direction he has a problem with it!”
“Yeah, he’s always been a complete pig. Some people are just born evil” Buffy shrugged.
“Buffy! He’s not evil! He’s just… mean spirited”
“In the most evil way” Buffy added. She had never liked Spike. He was cruel and treated her as if she was dumb just because she was in a sorority and enjoyed cheerleading.
What you and the two girls didn’t realise, was that Spike was eavesdropping. You had all been laughing really loud and he was about to take his chance to kick Buffy and her little loser friend out. Until he found he was interested to hear what you all had to say about him.
You groaned, thinking about the way things had been. You needed to vent. So, you took the chance while you were in the company of your now closest friends.
“He’s inconsiderate and rude and also I’m pretty sure he never washes his clothes... but he always smells good. Weird”
“Totally weird”
“Well, we did like, warn you”
“And oh my God! He walks around naked all the time! There’s always some stranger he’s brought home and they are always so loud! He never studies and the plates are always piled high in the kitchen! It’s disgusting – he’s disgusting!”
“He’s always been so arrogant and gross”
“Hey, don’t wig, next year we can find a place. The four of us – right Buffy?” Willow offered, including her girlfriend. She comforted you as you caught your breath from your outburst. Willow rested her hand on your shoulder to reassure you.
“Really?” You asked with a smile as Buffy nodded. She was going to move out from her sorority so she wasn’t distracted for her last year she had already decided.
“Don’t worry, y/n. We’ll keep you sane” Buffy insisted.
Spike scoffed. The way Buffy acted as if she was saving you from him. As if he was a fate worse than death. You angered him. The way you had determined his character over a few fleeting conversations. The gossip your silly little friends told you.
You became enemy number one. Even more so than you had been before. He hated gossip and the way people would laugh behind his back. You reminded him of this every time he looked at you now, not that you knew this.
The annoyance for the other just kept growing. Yours had originally been fuelled by your friends rumours, but his actions were now getting worse. Spike was seething at your dismissive tone against your character. He didn’t even want a roommate, he only agreed the landlord to put the room up so he didn’t put up the rent again.
So he decided to try and make you leave. Properly this time. He didn’t care anymore, you reminded him of everyone out there. Everyone that he hid himself away from. Distanced himself from.
The tension rose uncomfortably. He was more rude. More gross. And he made sure to do everything he knew that he could to annoy you. It was petty, he knew it, but he knew it would get a rise out of you.
One afternoon, you had been scraping off some congealed red liquid that you had been concerned was blood. He hung out with a weird crowd, you only hoped some poor thing hadn’t been exploded in there. Although, upon further inspection it appeared to be tomato soup. But you would probably embellish the story a little to your friends.
You washed your hands and scowled at him. He had moved to lean against the doorway and just watch you clean.
“God, Spike, you’re so lazy”
“’Scuse me?”
“You don’t clean, you don’t study – what exactly do you do with your life?”
He was affronted by this. By the way you spoke to him. How he felt like you acted like you were better than him. In your frustration you didn’t care what he thought. He just didn’t care. You were trying to live your life.
He could hear Buffy or even Angel’s voice through your own. The way they had always berated him.
“And what? I should be like you? You’re not exactly making a proper go of it are you? Haven’t seen you do much of anything ‘cept follow them brainless bints around the shop. When you’re not doing that you sit in your room as life passes you by, livin’ through your little Musical shows rather than living in the real world - You’re boring. You’ll live your pathetic little life, stuck in your lame little ways until you die”
“Spike-”
“You’re all the same! You and your preppy little band of misfits looking down your noses at everyone and yet you can’t see the obvious, can you? You’re so bored with your pathetic, frigid little lives that you have to make it my bloody problem!”
You decided, seeing as that’s how he viewed you that you would treat him exactly like that. Like he treated you. Things got worse.
He started to invite people over all the time. You would call it a party but there was nothing celebratory about it. You were confined to your room most of the time as they all laughed and screamed along to their music. They were always drinking and playing music no matter what time of the day you saw them.
You usually avoided them, locking your door, but you had needed to slip out of your room for a moment.
“Who’s this?” One of the guests pointed you out as you tried to make it to the bathroom without anybody noticing you. Now everyone’s eyes were on you.
“Oh don’t mind them, they’re just for show hasn’t had an original thought their entire life” Spike shrugged.
“Aw, no, Spike. Another mindless automaton” One of his friends spoke up and he laughed. It was a cold laugh, there was no humour in it.
“Do you, like, want to-”
“Don’t, love. They’re nobody” Spike stopped the blonde girl from speaking to you more kindly than the rest. They all laughed at this and began to tease you.
You left, slamming the door and you heard them laughing, jeering at you for your reaction. It made tears sting the back of your eyes. You collected yourself, shrugging on your jacket. You walked to a place you knew you would be welcome.
You knew that you weren’t going to get on. But this was getting out of hand. You hated him. Hated the way he treated you. The way he judged you, despite him knowing exactly how that feels.
As you thought this, he appeared to be thinking the same thing. Which made Spike scoff and frown. Was he really better than any of the people he hated? He shook that thought away. Downing his beer and looking for another rather than reflect.
You had called Buffy on your way over and she had been quick to contact the entire group to tell them there had been a major incident. Everyone piled around to her dorm room so that they could support you. You had sounded upset on the phone.
You explained everything that had happened and they all comforted you the best that they could. Xander then showed you the stack of films he had brought to try to cheer you up. He had even found some Musicals just for you.
Buffy explained that she had called Angel but he says he’s sorry but he’s busy right now. Buffy appeared disappointed and when you asked her about it she explained. They used to date when they were seniors in college but they had broken up despite still both having feelings for each other.
She explained it had seemed the right thing to do at the time, but now she wished they were back together. You insisted that you would make it your mission to help them get back together which made Buffy grin at you. She really did value your friendship.
As the night wore on your friends began to discuss the idea of you taking your revenge on Spike. It had made you laugh as they suggested ridiculous pranks and ideas that wouldn’t bother him at all. But then they began to take it more seriously. Insisting that you should get even.
You said you weren’t sure. And left it at that. But they thought you had better do something or he wouldn’t stop.
You eventually went back to a trashed house after staying for the weekend with Buffy. You stared at the mess. Maybe you would have to do something.
It had been unusually quiet the few days prior and you should have known better than to hope he had stopped. You had heard a girl, one of Spike’s partners that came around more than most (Harmony but her sex noises were nothing close to harmonious). She explained that if they were to have a threesome it would have to be boy-boy-girl. Apparently, neither of them had been able to swing Charlize Theron.
You had overheard this conversation over breakfast one morning on. A rare occasion they were both awake (they hadn’t gone to sleep yet). You had immediately spat out your food in disgust of their blunt discussion.
It had been perhaps in slight exaggeration but you felt like you were allowed. You were fine with people having sex and having fun but you really didn’t want to have to hear about it over your breakfast. They could have at least let you rub the sleep from your eyes first.
He had scoffed at you at the time and now he had set this up seemingly just to rub you up the wrong way. As opposed to the right ways he was rubbing his partners.
He tried to push the thought down that this had been solely planned because of you. With you in mind. To get a reaction from you. Because that would start him questioning his intentions. His actions. How you made him so angry it was now near obsessive.
So, it appeared they had finally agreed on the logistics of it. And were now giving you a live audio performance. On some random Thursday afternoon just as you had settled down to study.
You swore they were doing it on purpose. Being as loud as possible just to get a rise out of you.
You pounded on the door. You could smell sex from where you were stood out on the landing. He opened the door and stale cigarette smoke appeared to pour out of the room with him. He had opened the door almost immediately. As if he had been waiting.
“Spike!”
“Problem, pet?”
“I don’t care that you’re having sex, the walls are just so thin – I have an exam coming up can you just be quiet? Or go to one of your, uh, friends’ houses…”
“Mm, someone’s jealous”
“I’m not-”
“Just ‘cause you’re not bloody gettin’ any” He prodded before he thought about it a moment, changing tac, “Oh no. I know what this is… You want me, you need me…” He teased, knowing it would make you flustered.
“I just- I just want to-”
“If you wanted a taste all you had to do was ask” He smirked, moving his hips slightly and moving his head smugly along with his words. Drawing your attention to his naked form. The people in his bed were calling him back and you were just staring at each other. All he was wearing was a single silver chain around his neck. He was attractive, you couldn’t deny this and he knew it too.
You were both furious at each other. Silently trying to gain the upper hand.
“You’re a pig, Spike!” You suddenly screamed, stepping towards him angrily. Which made him smile and just close the door in your face. That was what he had wanted. To get such a big emotional response from you.
You were so angry you threw one of your precious book at his now slammed shut door. He winced at the name you had used, one often used against him by people like Buffy. She even managed to get to him in his own home. You angered him. You angered him.
But he turned back and the noises started up again and you knew for sure that they were doing it on purpose now. It was getting louder and louder. He couldn’t be that fucking good, you were sure of it.
You ran into your room and rummaged through the stack of CDs you had brought with you, selecting the perfect accompaniment. The soundtrack from your favourite musical. You turned the volume up fully and let the entire score play out.
You never wanted to see his stupid smug face again.
