What do you surround yourself with? What sorts of influences do you allow into your life to inspire you? Remember that you have a choice as to what you allow to influence you, but it requires actually making a conscious choice.

Do you watch live television? Try not watching television for 14 days and see how your outlook changes. At the very least, stop watching the commercials; all they do is reinforce a message of lack, which will invade your subconscious and affect how you perceive the world and your life. Advertising is a very subversive block to a path of enlightenment.

I am obsessed with art, fashion,dissecting movies and shows for underlying racism and sexism or just cliche script writing (it annoys me when I can guess what the next line is going to be.) I am passionate about nature and spirituality and studying universal laws outside of my college career.

I am taking this class one because it fulfills the requirement, two because I love art and discussing how it relates to culture and human nature and just observing art for the multiplicities of meanings condensed into one singular piece.

Culture is what we participate in that helps make us who we are in our identity. Popular culture is made up of small things people take from individual cultures and make trendy for profit and mass consumption for all. I observe media through an intersectional lens, meaning I look at the demographics of the newscasters from the news channel my grandparents watch, I interpret the underlying meanings behind the sneaky wordplay or lack thereof included in television shows,movies, magazines, fashion, music, etc. I see where the learning and listening to learn stopped for some of these people and where their knowledge on important topics in our country now sits. I am an active social media user that is starting to use less just because the users around me are not aware that they have the power and control to change what they see on their timelines. There is a lot of negativity just for the sake of negativity, not to educate, learn, or express one’s emotions and move on. Social media is a major proponent of increase in mental health struggles for these younger generations. I do consider myself a producer of media because I willingly unleash my unfiltered opinions, thoughts, and pictures over the internet, and even if they are not international hits, I still have a small community I’ve built for myself of “Internet Friends” that I know are listening, paying attention, and contributing to the conversation I ask to have with the world via twitter. Since I am socy/gsws double major I would like to think I have the tools to critically think and observe the media in front of me, but like a lot of people, the messages are subliminal and you won’t catch them until someone else highlights them for you, then you are able to see things in different perspectives and have a better understanding of meanings presented through images and/or narratives presented in media.
