So, Otona PreCure and the No Homo Thing
Tumblr media
You know, I watched Kibou no Chikara - Otona PreCure now and I surprisingly liked it, even though Yes PreCure 5 is among the PreCure seasons I liked the least. But I kinda really liked how much this show went into the entire "fighting climate change and also capitalism is bad" thing. I mean, there is an irony to it, if course. Given that this very much exists as a capitalist product.
But there was one thing that irked me to no end: The NO HOMO they did with Saki and Mai.
Look, people. PreCure is inherently sapphic, whether it was intended like that or not. It is inherently sapphic in the same way that most magical girl shows are inherently sapphic. It is a show about girls and focuses on the relationship between those girls. And of course the two Futari Wa series were very strong on this.
Especially with Saki and Mai.
And here comes this new show and... gives the two of them off-screen boyfriends. Especially Saki an unnamed fiancé, who we only ever see from behind. Who has no voiceline. Nothing. Which is just such a fucking big ass "no homo" thing.
Like, fuck this. Let the sapphics have this, god darn it.
I mean, PreCure in the past was already at times pretty clear about the queer stuff. So why do we have to make this big thing out of this? Especially given that this show was for fucking adults.
And mind you, Coco and Nozomi - a pretty much beastialic relationship - get their happy end. So... A romance between a girl and her animal fairy is totally okay, as long as it is straight? But lesbians is asking too much? Are you fucking kidding me?

My Precure season ranking is here again! Series within tiers are in the order I watched them.
Top tier
Tumblr media
Go! Princess Precure - Great characters and a particularly lovable heroine, handles its dream theme well and the princess motifs support it and give the show a memorable and consistent visual look.
Star Twinkle Precure - Mostly great characters, the message is a bit muddy but the space theme holds up well and traveling to other planets gives a nice chance of pace.
Tropical Rouge! Precure - A lot less ambitious than the other two, but has excellent characters and was just a lot of fun for what it was. Has the single best episode in the franchise.
Ok tier
Tumblr media
Kira Kira Precure A La Mode - I like the character designs and the main theme is consistent, plus sweets visuals always earns some points from me. Not particularly interesting characters though.
Fresh Precure! - Alright characters plus Setsuna has a great character arc and the story doesn’t do anything offensively stupid, but also doesn’t particularly stand out, introduces a major theme out of nowhere at the end and the colours are really ugly.
Futari wa Precure Max Heart - Slow as molasses and Nagisa and Honoka don’t have a lot to do, but Hikari’s story was unexpectedly good and also unique for the franchise.
Smile Precure! - Fun characters and surprisingly enjoyable "filler" episodes, but not enough substance for top tier.
Futari wa Precure Splash Star - A memorable theme and a great villain side. Main duo is ok but not particularly well developed.
Hirogaru Sky Precure! - I really want to like this because 4/5 of the cast is so good, the character designs are excellent and the ending is great but the story is just so nothing. And Ellee baby form detracts from every scene she's in.
Mid tier
Tumblr media
Healin’ Good Precure - Nodoka’s story is one of the best in the entire franchise, however I found pretty much everything else about it boring, and find it has the dullest character dynamics and Asumi is to be the blandest Cure overall.
Futari wa Precure - Nice chemistry with the main duo and a main heroine who feels fresh at this point, but is otherwise kind of generic and especially the second half was pretty weak.
Mahou Tsukai Precure! - Ha-chan is great but otherwise felt pretty plodding, really weak villains.
(lower tiers under readmore)
Meh tier
Tumblr media
Delicious Party Precure - Memorable theme but otherwise doesn’t have much that stands out about it. Has disjointed plot elements and I didn’t particularly care for any of the characters.
Yes! Precure 5 - No glaring issues (aside from the fact I don't like Nozomi) but also no particular highlights either, kind of meh all around. Has some nice character dynamics.
Bottom tier
Tumblr media
Happiness Charge Precure! - Hime is lovely and the concept of the International Precure is great, but I also find half of the main Cures awful and in the end the show is a directionless mess that doesn’t do anything with any of its unique ideas.
Doki Doki! Precure - Great Cure designs and props for trying with the lore, but the show is far too busy making everything about how amazing Mana is, which consumes everything else.
Yes! Precure 5 GoGo - Unnecessary sequel with a generic story and doesn't really add anything worthwhile to the Cures' character arcs.
Kibou no Chikara: Otona Precure '23 - The stuff on the Cures' adult lives was good but a letdown on all other fronts. Nostalgia pandering without properly delivering. And no new Cure forms!

Comship Bracket 3 | PREQUEL ROUND | Mod Guaranteed Entry Poll
Mod Satou (She/Her Only) here! So, as it turns out, gaining new mods means a difference of shipping opinion on what myself and Mod Happy want to include as a guaranteed ship of Comship 3racket. We both know we want a Precure ship as part of Comship Bracket 3, but we're torn between two.
We have a ship chosen by myself - NozoCoco (Nozomi Yumehara x Coco), from Yes! Precure 5, Yes! Precure 5 GoGo!, and Kibou no chikara, Otona Precure '23
And a ship chosen by Mod Happy - SakaFuu (Ayumi Sakagami x Fuu/Fusion), from Precure All Stars New Stage: Mirai no tomodachi
Propaganda will be underneath the poll.
Remember, you are voting for the ship you prefer, not the ship you find more problematic
Propaganda for both ships under the cut.
NozoCoco Propaganda (Species Difference, Age Gap, Originally AdultxMinor, Originally AdultxTeen, Originally TeacherxStudent)
While the Nozomi of the current day featured in Otona Precure is an adult, she first met Coco back in Yes! Precure 5, when she was 14 and he was an adult, working as a teacher at her school to keep an eye on her after a fated encounter. She'd end up protecting Coco, and saying what she wanted most in the world was to help Coco's dream of saving his kingdom come true.
Through becoming a Precure, Nozomi would have stereotypical cliché anime couple encounters with Coco, such as him landing on top of her and causing her to blush immensely, or him crawling into her bed in human form to wake her up when her mother walks in - before turning back into his fairy form to hide that he was ever in Nozomi's room.
In a later episode, Nozomi is struggling to study, getting 18% or lower on tests, and failing to retain any attention towards the study group, but seeming excited at a hot air balloon outside, which is when she runs off. Coco is the only person to follow her, taking note that she liked the balloon, he asks if she'd like to run off in that direction to ride it. During their talk, Nozomi opens up, mentioning that she feels like she's useless and can't do anything - Coco gives her an immensely heartwarming talk about how even if she takes longer to retain information she's not interested in, she's smart when it comes to her interests - she's great at making progress with what she likes, and that's not useless.
I haven't seen any GoGo! Yet, but the two reunite and become officially married in Otona, so these two end up a canon couple!
SakaFuu Propaganda (Species Difference, HeroxVillain, Yandere Tropes)
When the villain Fusion was defeated by all the Precure from Futari Wa to Suite Precure, the body split into several pieces and became scattered around Yokohama. On a trip, the Smile Precure join in with the rest in hunting down the pieces of Fusion before he can reform, as that would spell disaster for many of the Precure.
Ayumi Sakagami got to one piece of Fusion first, who she saved from underneath a leaf that was making it hard for him to move and breathe, naming him Fuu. After she saved this piece of Fusion, he decided to protect Ayumi with his life, and morphed into a bracelet on her wrist when needing to hide from the Precure.
Ayumi would take Fuu to shops to look around, and feed him things in her room in secrecy, without her mom knowing. Ayumi asked him to make sure he ate a lot so he could grow big, as that was healthy. Fuu recalled her getting scared at a dog earlier, and... well, he ate. To protect Ayumi, he ate the thing that was scaring her.
As things continued, Fusion got bigger, and they played games together, learning to have a close connection and love each other. That's when an argument broke out between Ayumi and her mom, causing Ayumi to say she hated her mom, she hated her school, and she hated all of Yokohama. Even though the Precure tried to intervene, Fuu's desire to make sure Ayumi was always happy began the destruction of Yokohama, as he attempted to delete every last thing that was hurting this girl he loved so much.
Ayumi realised her mistake, and wanted to get her true feelings across to Fuu - her feelings for Fuu and wanting him to understand her were so strong, it resulted in her transforming into a Precure herself, Cure Echo - She explained her feelings to Fuu, how much she adored him... and Fuu adored her back. Yokohama (and the dog) were all restored, as he realised he was simply making Ayumi sad.
This is a blob of goo who would erase the world for this girl if it was hurting her. I love them so much.

What's Precure /gen?
Tumblr media
According to the wikipedia, Pretty Cure, also known as Precure (pronounced Purikyua), is a "Japanese magical girl anime franchise created by Izumi Todo and Bandai and produced by Asahi Broadcasting Corporation, Asatsu-DK, Toei Animation and Bandai. Each series revolves around a group of magical girls known as Pretty Cures who battle against evil forces." The magical girls of this franchise, like many other magical girls, have a magical (usually animal who can turn into a human) mentor to help guide them.
The franchise first kicked off in February 2004 with Futari Wa Pretty Cure, and got so popular that it spawned a sequel series, Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart in February 2005. Popularity continued to grow for the franchise, and eighteen series later, we are now in the year 2023 with Hirogaru Sky! Precure. There is also going to be an adult Precure spinoff series, Kibou no Chikara ~Otona Pretty Cure '23~, which will consist of the Yes! Precure 5 GoGo! and Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star team members as adults, which will begin releasing on October 7th of this year.
Each series of Precure will usually have a movie about half-way through, though sometimes a series movie will instead be a crossover movies. These crossover movies, called Pretty Cure All Stars, began in March 2009. In fact, on September 15th, Pretty Cure All Stars F will release in Japanese theaters.
You can find some of the Precure series on CrunchyRoll, but you can find a majority of them by looking hard enough (if you catch my drift, wink wink.)
Pretty Cure is a really good franchise (of course, some of the series have their moments), and have had some pretty big stars voice some characters, such as Sailor Moon's VA voicing Hummy on Suite Precure. I recommend it!

Kibou ko Chikara is really resonating with me so far! I love seeing adult Nozomi lighting up with passion and standing up for what she believes in. I see myself in her, and I feel proud that this is the kind of person a precure grows up to be. I think I'm going to come away from this series with a deeper sense of satisfaction with myself and my life 😌💖🌹

First impressions on Kibou no Chikara: Otona Precure '23
Alright this had a pretty strong opening, like it feels like the show has something to say. And when Nozomi fails to help one of her pupils because "a student is moving away because her dad's company is going bankrupt (and her parents are also divorcing)" is beyond what a teacher can solve, for once I felt very much like I was in the target audience. Like usually kid shows have a theme of "you can do anything if you put your heart to it" (and for a good reason I guess) but if you're enough of a cynical adult you're just thinking that not everything can be solved like that. Or since this is a two(?) parter episode they still have the opportunity to water this down and save the business and marriage in the next episode but I'm keeping my hopes up. Also there seems to be an environmental theme going on too so the TMM vibes were immediate.
Tumblr media
Another positive was that Nozomi was likable this time around, the Yes5 version of her is a bottom tier Cure for me but here she was far less annoying and made for a great teacher. Rin is also alright, and the other characters haven't had enough presence to form a proper opinion (though I did like Milk complaining about her job at the restaurant). And the girls are drinking alcohol!
Wondering what they'll do with Saki and Mai though, because usually for these crossovers the audience is just supposed to politely ignore how the shows supposedly fit together. Like do they even exist in the same version of Japan? Do they have discussions on how multiple world-ending catastrophes happened within a few years and they just didn't notice anything that occurred outside their own town? Since normies from Splash Star now have a restaurant in the Yes5 universe, the explanation probably isn't "Precure have special powers that allow them to visit other dimensions". So I'm really interested to see if this will be an actual part of the story and world building, or more in the "don't think too much about it" territory.
The visuals are kind of meh and I don't really like the character designs, the outfits are still boring and I'm not a huge fan of the hues they've chosen. Also no sign of new henshin outfits which is obviously a matter of great importance for this blog. Still holding out for a hope for great new updated designs. The bad ending would be that they revert back to their 14-year-old looks for battles, let's not do that!
