The player in Missing Link is definitely the same as in Union X. It's not the rusted Starlight that confirmed it for me but the fact that they immediately got into trouble with authority.

not sure if everyone else has already figured it out and i'm just slow on the uptake but... remus is probably referencing brain's situation here, right
"but that wouldn't explain those keyblade skills of yours... hm? or would it?" makes me think he's comparing player's sudden appearance to brain's, since brain also kinda fulfills those two points (being a drifter, technically, and being a skilled wielder)
however: assuming that sigurd is one of the founders (whatever that entails), the line "otherwise the founders would be here" likely means that if player were in a similar situation to brain's i.e being from the past, they'd be here to pick them up like sigurd did, but clearly they're not. the clothes comment could also be talking about how brain showed up looking exactly as he did in his normal clothes, but player showed up in clothing more typical of scala ad caelum residents, thus throwing them even further off the trail of possibly-maybe being from the past like brain (worth noting in jp he uses the word 姿, which more vaguely means "appearance" instead of just clothing)
not to mention that brain does have his memories, while player remembers practically nothing
so it's basically just remus with his head in his hands going "maybe they're from the past like [brain] is? or... maybe not??" which is also exactly what i do when i think about anything in this series

you know how we were talking about how insane kh4 would be if it pulled a kh2 and had you start as a completely different character shrouded in mystery. consider also: you start as player3. the game opens with a simple customization screen and you play through not knowing what’s going on but it ends with you meeting this orange-haired girl and both of you getting kind of emotional for reasons that aren’t made immediately obvious. bonus pain points if you die and mega bonus points if it’s because you went and tried to save her like she once did for you

To the Age of Fairytales kids: How much do you know about *vague gestures* future stuff? Like with Xehanort.
Brain: "The Book Of Prophecies is supposed to be the key to solving the future's mysteries, but as of late I find that it has given me more questions about the future than answers. It does not mention this 'Xehanort' you're speaking of, but maybe I need to study it even more thoroughly. There has to be something..."
Elrena: "I don't know anyone named Xehanort, but it's kind of a lame name if you ask me. Sounds like an old geezer."
Ephemer: "Really? I think it rules! Would name my kid that, honestly."
Player nods.
Lauriam: "I think it has a sort of majestic quality to it. If it's from the future, I guess it might be important to remember it."
Elrena: "Hey, Lauriam? What's up with those two?"
Ventus and Skuld are both standing in the corner, looking incredibly distraught.
Ephemer: "Hey! You two doing alright?"
Ventus: "I don't know...I just got this awful feeling when you guys mentioned that name, but I have no idea why."
Skuld: "Yeah, that's exactly what happened to me, too. I think I might have to stay away from this 'Xehanort'..."
