Hey, my name is Finn Savill Kestel (n10880551) and I am a Game Design student at QUT in Brisbane Australia. I have always loved video games and after years of deliberation I finally decided to study the art of creating them. Currently studying the Fundamentals of Game Development or IGB220. This page's purpose is to keep an informative diary/journal of my creative process throughout the semester. I will update this blog as often as possible with ideas, images, mistakes, lessons I learnt, and reflective thoughts.

Le manque de livre, lecture se fait sentir?

En attendant de nous retrouver à la librairie voici quelques sites intéressants qui proposent des ouvrages gratuits, en lecture sur l'ordinateur! La chaîne du livre se mobilise pour permettre aux lecteurs de continuer d’accéder à la lecture et à l'information.

New Yorath House Artist Residency Pair: Adriana A. Davies and Marlena Wyman

Adriana A. Davies and Marlena Wyman. 

Our first artist in residence pair for 2022 at Yorath House is Adriana A. Davies and Marlena Wyman. They bring a wealth of experience and artistic practice to the residency, beginning on January 5th and ending on March 2nd, 2022.  

Davies is an established performance poet, author, curator and historian, and was the Edmonton Heritage Council inaugural Heritage Writers’ Reserve Award (2020) recipient, which supported the publication of her book From Sojourners to Citizens: Alberta’s Italian Heritage. She was Science Editor of The Canadian Encyclopedia and created the Alberta Online Encyclopedia. She has appeared in poetry anthologies and has published Changing My Skin: Dark Elegies and other poems.

Wyman is an established visual artist and curator, and worked as Audio-Visual Archivist at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. She is a co-founder of Urban Sketchers Edmonton, a chapter of the international organization of Urban Sketchers. Wyman was Edmonton’s Historian Laureate for two years and interpreted the position through her art practice. Her major Laureate project was the exhibit Sketching History. The artists worked together on a recent collaborative project for the Edmonton & District Historical Society’s Historic Festival: a virtual talk regarding the University of Alberta’s historic Ring Houses’ connections with art.

Both artists have served as mentors in the art and history fields and believe strongly in giving back to the community at this point in their art careers. Wyman was a mentor for two sessions of the CARFAC/EAC artist mentorship program for Indigenous and newcomer artists, and a mentor for the Edmonton Heritage Council’s heritage mentorship program. Davies, over the years, has mentored students at Ross Sheppard High School and Louise McKinney Junior High School as well as younger poets and historians.

The artists view the residency as a valuable opportunity to grow and refresh their art practices and explore new directions in their creativity. COVID-19 protocols allowing, they envision community connection to expose the greater public to Yorath House and its importance to Edmonton’s history.

Through prose, poetry and visual artworks, Davies and Wyman will interpret the House and the North Saskatchewan River that fronts it through time, interpreting the river as part of the human and natural history of Edmonton and Alberta.

Yorath House resonates for Davies because in 2015 she authored the Dictionary of Canadian Biography entry on Christopher James Yorath (to be published online in 2022). One of Edmonton’s early city managers, he was an exponent of the Garden City movement, and succeeded in getting Edmonton out of its post-World War One debt before moving on to work in the petroleum industry. His son, Dennis Kestell Yorath was part of the leadership at Northwestern Utilities and other energy companies. He commissioned architectural firm Rule, Wynn & Rule to design the “Modern Style” house. Davies obtained a range of archival material from the Yorath family including a copy of a hand-written memoir by William J. Wilkin, the father of Dennis’ wife, Margaret Elizabeth (also known as Bette). Wilkin immigrated to Canada from England in 1892 and set up businesses in Fort Saskatchewan and Edmonton. The memoir is full of rich details that make the early days in these communities come to life.

Wyman’s artworks have always been inspired in part by archival research. Both the Yorath/Wilkin family archives and Davies’ extensive research into those documents form one exciting jumping-off point for Wyman’s visual art interpretation. The sense of place that Yorath House and environs provide is a source of inspiration that will resonate personally for each artist and will also provide the catalyst for collaborative creativity.
